Bloody Hell
(2020)

Bloody entertaining!
How the hell did this movie get no attention? It's probably one of the best action horror works in the last 5 years. Straight, simple and an original plot that keeps you on your toes throughout. Not one second I was bored with it. Extremely entertaining and no agenda pushing like literally every other movie of the genre these days. Just a story of a guy who's trying to get out of a messy situation. That's it. You're simply there for the ride along.

It's sad that movies like this gets no attention anymore. Because 20 years ago, people would've called a movie like this an all time classic. Watch it with no hesitation especially if you're a fan of the genre.

The Sea Beast
(2022)

How to train your Sea Beast?
Probably one of the best visuals in an animation. But that's probably where it stops. There's little to no originality in this one and in classic Netflix fashion, it tries to shove down a load of completely irrelevant topics down the viewer's throat. Which in this case is likely to be a kid who's simply trying to enjoy a fantasy movie. It's also quite slow and long. I don't mind long but when it feels slow it starts to become annoying.

If the message you're trying to deliver becomes so obvious to the point that even the plot of the story gets overshadowed by it, I'd say that's a flop. Especially in a fantasy animation where you have so much freedom and things to work with.

The soundtrack was also noticably dull for a movie of this theme. The sole reason of this rating is the visual aspect of it.

Prey
(2022)

Best Predator movie to date.
There I said it. I will always have respect for the original movie to bringing the concept into life but for me, this one takes the top spot as the better movie. Everything about this movie is perfect. The story, the cast, the acting, the CGI, the soundtrack, the action, and yes even the runtime. Don't listen to reviews saying it's too low. It's just not. It doesn't have to be. I also loved the way they updated the Predator's design. Here I was thinking that it couldn't get any uglier.

The way this movie got practically no promo and no theatrical release is absolutely tragic. It's basically made to view in a theater. Definitely recommend watching this if you like action sci-fi. You don't even have to be a Predator fan to love this one.

What to even expect at this point..
At this point, many of us walk in to a Fast & Furious movie with very low expectations anyway. It's the kind of movie you watch to just ease off. Nice cars, fast paced, action packed, stunt heavy and the classic dumbed down hero/villain story. This has been the Fast and Furious formula for over a decade now. While it definitely seems to be getting old, it still works (kind of) and hey, it's not a bad thing to still have movies like this around. Especially in this day and age where pretty much everything on screen is pushing some form of a political agenda. So, if you're that OG fan who still walks in to a Fast & Furious movie expecting an actual plot with a decent story like in some of the early movies, well good for you. But you're definitely not going to find that here. Even the movie itself acknowledges this fact. So at least it's not the kind of film that try hard to be something that it's not. It just accepts what it is and delivers what the audience expects (At least most of us). Nothing more, nothing less.

If you really want to know, the story, to simply put, is very bland. There's no originality, no interesting arcs, hilariously bad dialogue, numerous plot holes which even a 6-year-old can spot and it simply exists to supplement the action sequences. Not the other way around. Also be warned that if you're a fan of the Tokyo Drift story, this movie might potentially ruin that for you.

It kind of shows that the cast is also getting a bit tired of the repetitiveness and the milking of these stories and I too believe that it's about time they wrap this up after the 10th installment. Yes, there will be a 10th and it's not like I spoiled it anyway because everyone knew that before this movie was even announced.

TLDR: It's just a very dumb movie with lazy writing and lot of CGI/stunt shots. But that's the exact point of it and if you still expect more of this franchise after all these years you're something else. At best, watch it drunk with some friends..

Matangi/Maya/M.I.A.
(2018)

Powerful; In the wrong way.
Why I gave a 4/10.

As far as self-documentaries go, I'd say this is one of the best. You'll immediately notice that she's a talent around the camera and the portrayal of the three faces of her life, "Matangi, Maya and M. I A." is also laid out in a very captivating manner. When it comes to the political side, it does a decent job at portraying what an immigrant, especially a Sri Lankan or an Indian would have to experience when moving to western countries like the UK even in this day and age. Above all it's not boring to watch. Because I've found most documentaries that are based around artists like this to be quite sluggish and boring but definitely not this one.

Why I gave a 4/10?

The politics. The allegations she's trying to highlight regarding the wartime incidents in Sri Lanka are extremely one-sided. If I were a Tamil person who supported the LTTE and their views, I'll accord with almost every statement she makes about the civil war in this documentary. There's really nothing in terms of accounts from the other side. The Sri Lankan civil war was an immensely, tremendously complicated situation which ultimately stands every party that got involved in it at fault. To put it simply, there were no good guys and bad guys. Both sides traded blows and only ones that truly got hurt were the innocent civilians and the heroic young soldiers. It's not right of her to accuse an entire nation with atrocities while only having exposure to a mere fraction of the situation. These facts alone were grim enough for me to give this a 4 out of 10. If she was going to touch the war topic, she could've at least done it right.

As a "self-documentary" Matangi/Maya/M. I. A. Is a solid make. It's a shame that numerous bits got cut out in the final production (as she stated in an interview with Vanity Fair) as I'm sure they could've also been equally engaging. But it's easy to understand as to why they were cut out in the first place. The message she's trying to put out politically is simply deceiving for anyone who don't know about the history and the development of the Sri Lankan civil war.

Kursk
(2018)

It's actually a good movie
If you exclude the controversy that surrounds the actual Kursk incident which people often compare this movie to, it can actually be called a decent movie worth watching. Seriously just try watching it as a pure fiction and you will be rewarded with a great naval thriller which includes a very potent cast of actors, decent cinematography and a very good story which all of us can learn a lesson from. I loved it! Just don't be prepared to learn facts about the real life incident watching this. Do your own research for that.

Thushara
(2009)

Textbook Sri Lankan love story
I can't speak for the original 1973 Thushara by Yasapalitha Nanayakkara that this was based on but it's sad if both are similar in their delivery. Thushara (2008) can be humourous at times (in a bad way) despite the intended effect being the complete opposite of humor. Then again, this applies for a lot of Sri Lankan romance movies from this era. At least the score was good which includes some popular hits from Jothipala.

Searching
(2018)

It's like an episode from Black Mirror except.. this time the ending is a bit different.
Seriously, watch Black Mirror if you haven't already. You're missing out.

Aquaman
(2018)

Aquaman was a mistake. Literally.
It's just, the tone of Aquaman isn't there..

A lot of bad dialogue coupled with bad attempts at comedy. Since Deadpool dropped, everyone's trying to be funny now..

Over the top CGI. It's not bad CGI it's just it isn't utilized properly. Feels off in many places. I've seen low budget video games does it better.

Cliché storyline. I feel like they could've gone with a different story altogether.

Sad to say as both as a DC and an Aquaman fan, cannot recommend watching this one. If you want good DC stories just go watch the animated movies.

Now waiting in disappointment for the next flop to be that is "Shazam!".

The Invitation
(2015)

I invite you to go watch it
Textbook mystery horror movie. Nothing to write home about in this one. The only and the biggest issue being that this movie is extremely predictable. It's almost like the toned down version of the movie Get Out. Except Get Out wasn't predictable at all. There's not a lot to say about this movie except you just go watch it. The Invitation only deserves 6 stars from me but the only reason I gave it a 7 was it's ending. While still being predictable, the ending in my opinion was the perfect ending for a movie like this. A big issue with horror/thriller/mystery movies nowadays is the delivery of the ending. I get that it being a mystery it's meant to be "mysterious". But most movies tend to overdo it. In The Invitation they do it just right. It's an average movie but not bad by any means. Recommended.

Top Gun
(1986)

"Fighter pilots now being hired for the US Air Force. Call us now!"
I can see why some people call this movie bad, inaccurate, a waste of time and just plain dumb altogether while some say that it's hella freaking cool. Well I sure agree with both of them. It is dumb. Really dumb. I mean like, it's hilariously dumb. But that's also what makes this movie "cool" per se.

That said, when reviewing the movie you can pretty much sum it all up calling it a "high budget commercial". Well a good one at that. It's not a good movie. It's just a good looking movie. There aren't many movies in this category out there so there's not much to compare it with. Also part of the reason why so many people like it. It's like the same situation with the Fast and Furious movies. Little to no competition, great timing and most importantly giving the people what they want. This is the perfect recipe for a cult favourite which Top Gun very much is.

This movie will keep you entertained. I only thought of watching this because of the love I have for aviation in general and that's probably the reason you're going to watch it too. See what I mean about having no competition? That's Top Gun. There's nothing to learn from it. Nothing to look up to nor no deep moral lessons to decipher and that's the beauty of it. You just watch it on a Sunday night and ENJOY it.

The Walking Dead
(2010)

I'm not even going to try
6/10 just out of the love I had till season 5.

After that it becomes completely "netflixed" if you know what I mean.

Kongens Nei
(2016)

Norway, the beautiful
Good movie if you like digging into the somewhat little known stories about world war 2. The movie portrays how Norway, which was initially a neutral country in the war got involved in it and how her King undertook the situation. There's really nothing much wrong with it. Only it can feel a bit slow at some parts. That's really it though. It's even pretty accurate on the historical side. A good watch if you haven't watched it.

Life of Pi
(2012)

Therapeutic.
One of those movies that you must experience during your lifetime. There's a reason for all the Oscars this movie racked up. Go see it for yourself. Also try to pick up a Blu-ray instead of a digital release.

Try grabbing a 4K release if possible. The movie is eyecandy.

Should be in league with Apocalypse Now
Classic case of Hollywood overshadowing. Found out about this movie from some YouTube compilation video. I would've never came across it otherwise. This is one of those very few movies out there with a relatively accurate portrayal of war time incidents. Good story, terrific acting, perfect length and run-time, action, drama, inspired by true incidents (I don't think it's a true story though), and it keeps you awake. It checks all the boxes there is and yet I can't figure out why critics go ahead and out right bash it.

They could've taken it a little easy on the camera shake. That's really my only flaw with it. Everything else is on point or better. This movie gave me lots of new insights on world war 2 and I wasn't bored during a single second of it. Go ahead and watch it now if you haven't. You're missing out. This one's genuinely underrated.

Suspiria
(2018)

An okay suspense movie
For a horror movie it works. Instead of the typical jumpers, it dips the movie in the thrill element alongside a good amount of "wtf" moments.

However this "thrill" pretty much leads up to nowhere. Most likely you'll end up being left with a heap of confusion unless you're someone who's in to all that satanism and witchcraft things. I'm not sure if the original 1977 movie connects with this one in some way which'll make thigs less confusing but I don't think it does. I'm planning to watch it next anyway. To my knowledge this is just a remake of it.

Excellent score coupled with the nice portrayal of late 70s Germany are also noteworthy.

6/10. An okay suspense movie for a patient viewer.

The Man in the High Castle
(2015)

Yet another victim of a moronic political agenda..
Promising first season, delivering second season, train wreck of a third season.

First of all I have to start by saying that I never read the book that the series is based on and I don't plan to either. So I'm just stating my opinion solely based on my experience watching it so far. Not comparing it to the book.

When this show first got announced, I loved the idea and the setting it was based on and the first season sure lived up to my hype. The characters were amazing. The story was extremely enticing. Not for a second it kept me bored. Sure it did have the usual misrepresentation of Hitler's Germany but that is to be expected and it's pretty much the norm in Hollywood at this point. All in all though I loved the way they managed to make occupied America such a dark, corrupted, neo-noir feeling place so well. I'm not going to go into depth with the story and the characters but they were all pretty convincing in the first two seasons. Specially the development between Juliana and Joe. Loved the direction that went on.

It's more or less the same thing in the second season. Good development. Smooth progression. Overall okay. A lot changes in the storyline but again I'm not going to go in depth. But then came the third season. I have to say when I was halfway into the second season, I thought they were going to end the series from that season and I think to myself now, that they did a crime by not doing so. The first few episodes in season three were okay. It starts well by adding to where it left off. Then little by little, one by one they start ruining the characters. They ruin them to a point where you almost start to hate the characters even when the story try convincing you otherwise. The story makes even seeing their faces annoy the life out of you. I mean just when I was starting to think how unique the show is, they made it stereotypical as hell. No hate towards the actresses but Juliana's and Mrs. Smith's faces to me became the most punchable faces of the show after this season. At least the soundtrack was good. Loved the score of the show from the start.

Overall though it's sad how a series this promising became a medium for political propaganda. Rather ironic considering what the show itself is about. After finishing off with the second season I gave it a solid 8/10. Third season easily made it a 5/10 if not less. I don't think this can ever be recovered after the third season disaster. But I'll still continue to have at least a glimmer of hope just out of the love I have for the concept. Not looking forward to season 4.

Adolf Hitler: The Greatest Story Never Told
(2013)

Will be worth the half of your day
I started watching this with a grain of salt and I recommend doing the same for anyone who wishes to sit through this. Because I know for a fact that from my experience, ultimately it's not the perfect truth unless you see and hear it with your own eyes and ears. So yeah, be it in a good way or bad way, at the end of the day this documentary is a propaganda piece. A one which certainly made an impression on me. I wouldn't say it is "brilliant" and "masterful" like many other positive reviews state. "Fascinating" and "interesting" would be the words I'd like to use here. Because this indeed got me into researching some things I never thought needed double checking. Also no matter your political stance, guaranteed you won't be looking at history the same way you did before once you watch this. Believe me on that one.

The documentary itself is not perfect but it does raise some serious points for a person to think about. Specifically it would make one question the credibility of the media and information an individual is fed with not just back in the day but also in this day and age (Which like we all already know by now is in a cesspool of it's own). A great eye-opener of a documentary for anyone of interest to watch. It did have its issues from a contextual standpoint specially nearing the final parts. All in all though it's a good watch. You won't regret sitting near 7 hours watching it. You'll know why it's that long once you're midway to it. In fact you'll think to yourself how the hell did the producer manage to finish it in six and a half hours and not 20 hours or so.

Just try watching this with an open mind. Which you will find easier said than done once you start watching but do indeed try. The documentary is a great antidote to years of misinformation and false propaganda we've been fed with. However, like many antidotes this too can tend to be toxic if consumed too much. So I'll emphasize again, watch it with an OPEN MIND.

A Clockwork Orange
(1971)

Must watch
Undoubtedly one of the best movies of all time. Another one of Kubrick's works of modern art. Everything about this movie is almost indefectible. The plot, acting, direction and the cinematography. Just perfect. The movie is well known for it's horrifying violence and sexual depictions but the meaning behind all that is at most times, stone cold and dull.

Even after 47 years of this movie being released, this still very well depicts the situation in the current world. A corrupted and perverted system where the core values which drives its people are nothing but, money, pleasure and power. Where in any case we messed up, we will never really be "forgiven" for whatever it is that we've done. Our path, actions and motives. Everything will always be then controlled by the "people upstairs". Just like the ending of this movie. Alex is alive and well but everything he's doing then are really just orders from the authorities. He is flesh and blood on the outside but merely mechanical on the inside. He is "a clockwork orange".

Ready Player One
(2018)

An 80s retrospective
Want to feel nostalgic? Well Spielberg and Cline will hit you in the face with a plate full of it. Filled with a salad of popular culture references and 80's nostalgia, this movie represents a cinematic sum of the 21st century. Despite the lack of character depth later on in the movie and the somewhat unnecessary narrative parts in the beginning, the story is otherwise nicely presented. Both Tye Sheridan and Olivia Cooke drops the mic on their performance and Mark Rylance unsurprisingly nails his also.

Really fun movie! Highly recommend watching it. Especially if you're a fan of the 80's pop culture. You'll find yourself in A LOT of occasions where you'd say to yourself, "Ah! I understood that reference!"

Captain Fantastic
(2016)

Outstanding? No. Stellar!
If you've watched "Into the Wild", think of this as the reverse plot of it. This movie criticizes the flaws of the modern family system and religious ethics in what one would call somewhat overkill ways. Overkill but very effective.

The movie shows us what humans could and should be. Matt Ross has yet again crafted another masterpiece of our time. 10/10!
