Leave the World Behind
(2023)

Was this whole film just a promotion for Friends?
Some pretty interesting horror scenes, its a shame it never goes anywhere or is ever developed. Why did such big stars agree to be in such a terrible film? Did they forget to film the ending because of the strike? Why do the animals act like that? Why on earth dod that kids teeth start falling out? It seems like the director had a load of idea for creepy scenes but no logical clue how to connect them all together. Instead of answering any questions, the film ends with a girl obsessed with 90s sitcom friends finally getting to see how it ends. Truly awful. Why didn't Jukia Roberts just tell her how it ended?

Pam & Tommy
(2022)

Too much time dedicated to Seth Rogan
For a show named Pam and Tommy, FAR too much time is spent on Seth Rogan's character, Rand. In the first episode we only get two scenes with Pam in, and Rand's story is just not as interesting as the whirlwind romance of Pam and Tommy. I understand the first episode, setting up the backstory of how he got the sex tape, but then the third episode goes onto this man's romantic history. I don't care, this is not what we came to the show for.

I'm far more interested in how the release of the sex tape personally affected Pam, the first episode opens with her looking extremely uncomfortable during an interview with Jay Leno, but you have to suffer through pointless Seth Rogan storylines before you get to that. They're also trying to make you like Rand, you feel sorry for him, when in actuality by releasing that tape without any thought to how it would affect Pam, he's just as much of an arse hole as Tommy.

Both Lily James and Sebastian Stan are excellent in their respective roles, just wish more of the storyline was actually focused on the titular characters.

Last Night in Soho
(2021)

Truly unexpected and excellent
It's very hard to give a review without spoilers but this film is a must see, it's hilarious, terrifying and cathartic. I was excited going into it but I truly did not predict it would go the way it did, the soundtrack is brilliant! Thomasin McKenzie gives a stellar performance and WHAT a role for Diana Rigg to end her career with, truly going out in a blaze of glory.

Sound of Metal
(2019)

See this with surround sound!
The sound mixing on this film is INCREDIBLE, I'm so glad I saw it in the cinema, really gives you the perspective of what he's going through. Try see it in the cinema if you can, or if you're watching at home use good headphones, the sound is so important to this film and I don't feel it'll have the same impact just watching it on TV.

I also love that they don't translate the sign language when Ruben first starts to learn it, so that the audience feels as confused as he does, but as he picks it up they add subtitles for us.

Ava
(2020)

Would have worked better as a series
It starts off really, really well, but then lags from there. The choreography of the actions scenes is great, and the characters of Ava, Duke, Simon and Simon's daughter all play for an interesting dynamic, except the depth ends there. I think this could've been a really good story if there was more time to flesh it out, we're told that Ava's dad was a terrible person and she sees John Malcovit h as a father figure, but we never really see them have a father/daughter relationship, all their interactions seem very get down to business rather than affectionate, especially from Ava's side. There's a whole side plot that's not really fleshed out about how she used to date Mike, who is now engaged to her sister, but again there never seems to be any genuine feelings there that could make me care about the characters relationships. The strength comes in the action scenes, which are brilliant but the story and the characters needed to be more fleshed out. Why was Ava talking to subjects such a problem in the first place? Why is Simon in charge and Duke has lost his power? What's the back story with Simon and his daughter? Mike is mentioned to have a gambling problem but it's just thrown in there to give Ava a scene of beating people up rather than because it affects the story in any way. You could cut all the scenes about Ava's family out and it wouldn't make a difference, there's no emotional weight behind any of them, althogh not without the director trying.

The Sister
(2020)

Brilliant first three episodes, subpar ending
First three episodes are stellar, great at unravelling the story and building tension. There's also great performances from both Russel Tovey and Bertie Cavell. However the ending is just meh, it's not terrible but it's not particularly satisfactory either, it's just meh. Well worth a watch but far from the best thing I've seen recently.

Tenet
(2020)

Couldn't hear anything
I have been so excited for this film all year, I love Christopher Nolan, and I was so disappointed that you cannot hear a word anyone says. I understand the intense sound with films like Dunkirk, where it's all about immersion, but this film is closer to inception but virtually all the dialogue was blocked out by giant subwoofer noises. I don't even know what John David Washington's characters name is because I couldn't hear it, no idea who Aaran Taylor-Johnson or those soldiers were, couldn't hear! It felt like such a colossal waste of money, I almost walked out.

It seemed like a very clever film, I'm sure it has a very interesting plot, and I will certainly watch it on a tv with subtitles when I can. It is NOT worth wasting your money to see in the cinema, you'll have a much better time if you wait for the DVD.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power
(2018)

Lacklustre start, brilliant final few seasons
When I first started watching it seemed like a little kids show about magic and princesses, but I held out because it had been recommended to me by fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender as a similar kind of show. It REALLY picks up after the first season, I ended up binge watching S2-5 over a couple of days, and was surprised by how emotional it made me - so many heartfelt episodes brought me to tears. Catra's character arc is truly brilliant, possibly on par with Zuko's. Entrapta is one of my favourite tv characters of all time, she makes every scene she's in better. Even characters that at first I thought were boring or annoying I grew to love by the end.

Cursed
(2020)

Interesting concept, awful execution
I'm hesitant to blame the actors for the complete mess of this series, because bad acting this universal is usually the fault of the directors, and the directors make so many questionable choices. The way it's shot feels very haphazard and confusing, the choreography is laughable and the writing is utter tripe. These characters feel shallow, and any attempt at depth feels utterly ridiculous. Looking at the writers it seems before this they mainly worked on comic books/graphic novels which makes sense why all the dialogue feels so stilted. Such a shame, I'm a huge fan of the King Arthur and the concept of the story told from the perspective of the Lady of the Lake was very promising, it's just let down by the awful execution. The pacing is so slow and the acting so bad that it becomes unwatchable after a few episodes.

Space Force
(2020)

Really enjoyable!
I thought this was a highly amusing satire of modern-day American military politics, with hilarious imitations of Nancy Pelosi and AOC. The show has a great balance of serious and silly, with some great performances. I really hope it gets renewed for a second season, I think it's got off to a great start but like The Office will only get better!

Noughts + Crosses
(2020)

Beautifully Executed Series
Everything about this adaptation is so incredibly well done. The cast is amazing, The production design is phenomenal, they've really thought about what a country ruled by Africans would look like, from the colourful fashion to the black plasters. I think it was a wonderful adaptation of the book, I liked how they aged the characters and showed us more of kamal's politics, and dealt with issues like police brutality. It feels very poignant watching it the other way round. I watched the whole thing over the weekend and as much as I'd really like a season two, I love the hope that this season ended with, rather than following the gut-wrenching ending of the book. This series has been my favourite show of 2020 so far.

Lady Macbeth
(2016)

Florence Pugh is excellent
Florence Pugh really shines in this film, her performance is utterly brilliant, cold and harrowing but also full of emotion. The directing is also fantastic, so many artistically framed shots that emphasises her loneliness and boredom.

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency
(2016)

Netflix please bring it back!
I just binge watched the first two seasons in a few days and absolutely loved this quirky way of storytelling, the completely unpredictable world and storylines, and it was clearly set up for a season 3. All the reviews on her seem to suggest that it's loved by almost everyone who watched it, so I cannot understand why it was cancelled. I think perhaps it wasn't advertised very well on Netflix? I only just discovered it and definitely would have watched it years ago if I knew about it. Please please stop wasting money on terrible Noah Centineo rom-coms and crap like more seasons of 13 reasons why and bring this back!

The Man
(2019)

Brilliant Series
The first two episodes are incredibly gripping, really highlighting the subtleties of bullying and how it isn't a problem that is left behind with school. The acting is brilliant, you really, really hate the antagonists and feel so frustrated when Thomas keeps succumbing to their taunts. It actually makes me anxious to watch because you're so worried about what they're gonna do to him next, can't wait for the finale. Really hope Thomas comes out on top.

Merlin
(2008)

Loved it
This show started when I was 11 and I LOVED it. Just started rewatching on Netflix and it definitely lives up to the memory. It's perfect for kids, fantastical, goofy, heartwarming - it's only flaw is that it only had 4 seasons!

Last Christmas
(2019)

Heartwarming
Yes it's predictable, but c'mon it's a Christmas movie they're always predictable. It's got such a sweet, heartfelt message, and is incredibly funny at times. Definitely worth a watch.

The Morning Show: Lonely at the Top
(2019)
Episode 8, Season 1

Incredibly Thought Provoking
This episode takes place in the form of a flashback, and shows an incident of Mitch Kessler's inappropriate sexual conduct. Throughout the show so far it's been obvious that Mitch sleeps around, but there's always been a question as to how far it went. This episode deals with the issue incredibly well, it shows Mitch in his element presenting the morning show, shows off his cheeky yet often uncomfortable behaviour, sowing the seeds for what's to come. It shows his abuse of power, the mistreatment of the women he's had sexual encounters with, and highlights the culture in which he was allowed to get away with it. The last ten minutes are so incredibly poignant, and so excellently acted, you can truly feel the girl's pain and yet inability to stop it. Really commend the whole cast and crew on this episode.

The Alienist
(2018)

Gripping Show
I binge watched the whole thing in a day. The acting is stellar, the cinematography, set and costume design are all brilliant, and the plot is incredibly gripping. I really do not understand the negative reviews. Yes it wasn't a happy, everything is explained ending, but I think it was a perfect one to the series.

His Dark Materials: The Lost Boy
(2019)
Episode 5, Season 1

Utterly Ridiculous
In the books, daemons are physical manifestations of your soul, they're not supposed to be more than a couple of metres away from humans, and yet there is scene after scene after scene with humans and no daemons next to them. Which makes it downright STUPID that when they find Billy everyone goes crazy 'where's his Daemon where's his daemon' when none of them have daemons near them. In the books (it's not Billy it's a different boy) the kid is found in a shed clutching a dead fish in place of Ratter, and mumbling Ratter's band over and over again. Here Billy just looks unconscious, it takes all the emotion out of that scene. WHAT is Jack Thorne thinking????

His Dark Materials
(2019)

So disappointing
I'm honestly so disappointed with this show. I love these books so dearly, I've studied them in depth and written essays on them, and this show doesn't do it justice.

The casting is awful, the Golden Compass Movie may have completely abandoned the true plot, but that Lyra was absolutely perfect. Dafne Keen just isn't right, her only emotion seems to be raising her voice in anger. Lyra is supposed to be incredibly vibrant, imaginative, clever and Dafne portrays none of those things, she just comes across as a moody teenager constantly yelling at everyone. I find her acting so terribly annoying that I can barely watch this series. I love Ruth Wilson, but her portrayal doesn't express that indescribable charm and poise that is so essential to Mrs Coulter's demeanour, something Nicole Kidman embodies perfectly.

Secondly, where are all the deamons? They're so essential to this story, they're a part of every character that represents their true personality. They should be with the characters at every moment, so much so that the idea of someone who doesn't have one is repulsive, and yet most scenes don't include them, just implying that they're somewhere unseen off to the side. I understand that they're expensive to animate, but you shouldn't commit to making a series like this if you can't afford to depict such an important aspect of the story.

I'm also confused about how much plot information is being revealed so early on. In Episode 2, Lyra breaks into Mrs Coulter's Office and finds blueprints for what they're building at Bolvangar, which does not happen in the books and has completely spoiled the dramatic revelation for what will happen later. In Episide 1, Lord Asriel thoroughly explains exactly what his plans are in the North, even explaining what Dust is, Lyra is supposed to spend the whole book desperately searching for what this curious word Dust means, and Lord Asriel keeps his experiments shrouded in mich more mystery from the scholars. I understand this may seem to be nitpicking but the plot of Northern Lights, and the reason Lyra is so desperate to go North is a desire to learn more about Dust and they've seemingly taken that away.

The producers have tried to go for a more Game of Thrones approach and depict multiple storylines and characters at once, rather than following the story through Lyra's eyes and finding out information as she does, but I feel this falls flat and will backfire on them later. We are already being introduced to characters and plot points that don't come into effect until much later in the books, and now those moments won't have the same gravitas when they come around, or will there just be lots of scenes of Lyra being explained things we already know?

I'm honestly just very confused by this series, and I'm so utterly disappointed in it, I've been looking forward to it since I first heard it was commissioned. Maybe I just have too high expectations or the books are just too close to my heart for me to ever be happy with a series, but I actually enjoyed the Golden Compass Film until they did away with the ending. I'm honestly surprised that Phillip signed off on all this, it doesn't feel like whoever had translated it to the screen understood the appeal of the books in the first place.

Although it's very highly rated so I guess it's enjoyable as a stand alone series, for those who haven't read them or just don't know them as well as I do.

The Man in the High Castle: Fire from the Gods
(2019)
Episode 10, Season 4

The ending makes no sense??
What the hell was that ending? They built up all this flickering, and then at the last second it reminds us that we saw Joe shoot Juliana in an alt-world film, perhaps suggesting that the Nazis won in other worlds and might also be planning to invade this one, which would have been a GREAT ending, but instead a load of smiling random people come through? With no explanation? So are they supposed to be people from the world where Joe was a Nazi escaping? How do they know that they're dead in this world and can get through? Are they here because they think their loved ones are alive in this world? How would we know?

The first 90% of this episode was so so good, it's just the unexplained people coming through at the end that ruined it. Not satisfying at all.

Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas
(2003)

Brilliant film kids will LOVE
The was my absolute favourite film as a child, we had it on DVD and I must have seen it over a hundred times. The world they created is captivating, the jokes are hilarious and the plot has a strong message about friendship and the importance of keeping your word. Eris is an iconic villain, she's funny, sassy and extremely quotable, I even dressed up as her for Halloween once. Your kids will love this movie!

Doctor Sleep
(2019)

Too long
Far too long and far too convoluted, I often found myself checking the time to see when it would end. The plot is solid, and the last twenty minutes are a great callback for shining fans, but it wastes too much time on unnecessary scenes. A portion of the film focuses on the recruitment of Andi, who then plays no major part in the plot later on and dies unceremoniously, and frankly the movie would have lost nothing if it was cut.

Every single transition shot dissolved into the next one, sometimes it was done beautifully, such as when it played on the architecture of the Overlook towards the end, but mostly it did nothing and just added minutes to an already exhausting run time.

I feel like the plot could have been two separate movies, one with all the detail about Rose the hat and her friends travelling America eating people with powers, and one movie about an adult Dan Torrance who has to overcome his past trauma and even return to the place that caused it. Trying to cram it all into one film just didn't work.

What We Do in the Shadows
(2014)

Hilarious!
This is such a funny concept, I spent the entire film laughing hysterically. Taika Waititi has such a unique hilarious style and this movie takes deadpan humour to a whole new level. Highly recommend!
