Argyle
(2011)

Just sad...
Sam has been in such great movies and deserves far better scripts, Henry Cavil may have brought this silly role on himself, I don't know what happened behind the scenes for him to lose favour with those in power for casting, but if this is the best he can expect going forward I'd start producing or contribute in some other way. Bryce is no Melissa McCarthy and it does take special talent to look elegant when frumpy in an evening gown. It just leaves a huge question, why? Why did they bother to make such a mess of a movie? John Cena? Who cares and so I suppose he's the only one who you don't wonder or care why he has a cameo, but Henry Cavil has fallen hard to be on equal footing with him. It made me sad really. Some of this cast has Oscar worthy talent and I miss seeing them in far better material than this kinda stuff. I only kept watching thinking if I shook my head one more time it would turn into a movie, it never does, bail early, it doesn't improve.

Ripley
(2024)

Curious reviews
I'm wondering why so many reviews mention the liking of the John Malkovich interpretation of Thomas Ripley in the movie of that name, yet not once do they mention his portrayal of a different character in this adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley in the last few scenes of this production. They have great things to say about this version and they enjoyed the Malkovich movie but don't mention he appears in this new one, why? I can only think it's because they didn't actually watch it until the end, because he doesn't appear until very near the end? Seems like a very odd thing to leave out of their reviews!

Ghosted
(2023)

Yikes
Wow, even Evan's Marvel buds (2 minutes) and Ryan Reynolds paying back a 3 min moment couldn't save this mess. I'm surprised to see CE back in a cheesy action rom-com, why? Makes no sense. His performance in The Grey Man was questionable so, has he lost his mojo?

I'm a big Marvel fan and certainly enjoyed all his work on those but he was hesitant to sign up for the long haul. I don't know, have we seen the best of Captain America?

Somebody send this man a script and tell him to leave the comedy out. He honestly played Cap in a slightly serious vein, it worked.

Too bad, all the trailers made me bite, but it just didn't work for me. You could see the entire movie plot in the meet cute early on.

The Patient
(2022)

Can't be happier to see Carrel and D. Gleeson!
People write that they quit after 4-5 episodes because 'nothing happens'.

A psychiatrist is overwhelmed in his home and wakes up chained to the floor of a new patient who declares he's a serial killer who's wanting therapy to be able to stop. The killer had tried traditional therapy in his office but he wasn't able to be forthcoming and Carrel after a few sessions says it won't work if he can't share what may indeed be difficult to talk about. The killer decides he has to kidnap Carrel so that he can be honest with him in a place where he feels safe. He tells him why he's there, that he's a killer, Carrel is understandably frightened and tries to use his therapeutic methods to get free, none of which work. He shuts down, refuses to eat.

Though reluctant at first, Carrel realizes he may find a way out if he cooperates. There's an interesting side story developing about the killer who brings him very specialized gourmet food daily. Eventually we understand that he's a restaurant inspector and has developed a taste for his job. The person he's currently focused on killing worked in one restaurant he inspected and he's angry because he feels he was mistreated by the young man who works there, it's his parents restaurant.

We're surprised that the person Carrel hears upstairs is the killer's mother. She's able to concur with the killer's story that he was badly beaten on a regular basis by the father who left 'so he'd stop' when he was 14, is true. She also says she's not going to turn her son in and it was her idea that her son can gain control of his dark urges through therapy and she found the book written by Carrel. Carrel tries to use the close relationship between the mother and son to create a pact to stop killing.

We're surprised again when later at night the killer drags in the tied up, eyes covered in duct tape young man he wants to kill and puts him in the spare bedroom, doesn't talk to Carrel and disappears upstairs. Now the psychiatrist finds he's got two patients, the kidnapped kid can hear him, and the killer has bought a sound machine for use during their therapy so the other victim can't hear them talk.

Carrel also has time to reflect on his personal life, his estrangement from his son, he's close with his daughter and his wife is a bit of a 'character' in the family, expressing herself through music and becomes an embarrassment to the son before she becomes sick and dies from cancer a few months before these incidents occur. It's interesting to try and find any overlaps between the situation he's in and his personal life. There's much more to that than I'll include here.

You begin to understand more about each of the main characters through the therapy sessions and through Carell's flashbacks of his life while the killer is at work. The killer was once married and when he gets very upset and close to killing his victim, Carrel desperately attempts to distract him by having him go to work, just do what you do every day and control the urges. He also suggests he stop and see his wife, because in doing so it can put his mind in a very different place and hopefully curb the building anxiety.

We find out that they had adopted kids from Bangladesh and that she's adopted another one. He'd left a recliner there and she helps him get it in his truck and it's shown so that we see they seem to have a fairly healthy relationship though being a father probably wasn't great for him.

The victim asks Carrel if he can manipulate the killer into coming down and letting him out, in some way he will try and overtake him and they can try and free themselves. This doesn't go well and now you're at the 3/4 mark of episode 5, 5x25 minutes, and I have no commercials, is 125 minutes where apparently nothing happened.

I of course left more than half out, so to say I quit because 'nothing happened' is the only thing I'd call over the top. If you're on IMDb, don't you look at the cast? There are more prisoners to come, there's a lot more story to be told. I agree short episodes aren't my favourite way to watch and I'll usually wait until I have 2 or more? But that's how you deal with not liking the format? It's not a cause for hating the show or getting yourself completely worked up over it? It's what it is but it shows a lack of maturity to become enraged by it?

This is described as a tv mini series, it says it lasts until 2022 right on the home page these reviews are written on. There's a lot of statements, questions, things that are clearly answered if you'd bothered to read the page about the show you're watching and writing a scathing review of!

I don't mind spoilers, this will be marked as having them, but it's definitely more a critique of the reviews than the show! I encourage you to watch it, however you prefer, it's a fascinating story and I've never seen anything like it. If you think Gleeson isn't fierce and intimidating, his character isn't! He's playing it as he's been directed too. When the worm turns, you'll see that side of him, he's not pretending he's killed several people! Carrel I always find very understated. If you're referring to one movie The Big Short? That's who that guy was in real life! A larger than life, top of his volume and extremely emotional person. He's certainly not always over the top! He's rather mild from 40 year old Virgin to this!

Just ignore these reviews, if you're a fan of Steve Carrel and Domhnall Gleeson you'll not be disappointed! They're a fantastic pairing in this psychological thriller and it's definitely worth your time.

The Dinner
(2017)

I never blinked!
This movie doesn't deserve these crazy reviews. It's incredibly enlightening and the acting is frighteningly good. The unexpected ability of Steve Coogan, who incidentally has claimed to be underrated as a dramatic actor, is astonishing and not to be missed. I can't say much without spoilers, they don't bother me but others don't appreciate them, I can't recommend it highly enough, ignore the ridiculous reviews and see it for yourself. They don't make very many dramas anymore and this is one of the best.

I called my film buff fan immediately after watching and she's a much harder marker than me and was equally astounded by the film. The parent's self absorption juxtaposed by their kids behaviour is an important message. The movie highlights many aspects of mental illness, from actual diagnosed ones to those we encounter everyday and perceive differently like narcissism and more. It's a fascinating discourse between the main characters, I personally don't care about the length of a movie and truly don't understand why people often have as their first negative comment something about not being able to get that 2 hours back, etc. It begs the question what would you have been doing that was so much more important? If you took the time to go to the movies, what is so wrong with the movie taking the time needed to flesh out the characters and enrich the story? You probably went home and watched something worse on TV the minute you walked in the door.

Please find it, watch it and be surprised by a movie based on character, interaction between them, developing real feelings for them and care what their going through in this story.

Thor: Love and Thunder
(2022)

Yikes
With such star power and serious acting ability how on earth didn't somebody yell STOP? This isn't working! Write a script worthy of the actors who clearly did their job in preparation for this mess. All the blame for the much anticipated and highly hyped Thor: Love and Thunder lays at the feet of its director/writer Taika Waititi and I can't believe I had to write that. Often brilliant, all I could think of was why he didn't pass if he didn't want to make another Thor movie! I'm actually worried that someone will get the wrong impression that there isn't a story to tell about Thor when I'd pay to see this one again with a good script and with proper use of the available talent. These movies are made for young teens and enjoyed by adults and this turned me back into an early teen stomping my feet and yelling in my head at the screen for the lame jokes, the pitiful use of Russell Crowe, the tragedy of the lack of use of Christian Bale, (he finally has been given the right role to bother with a Marvel movie and you butcher his story?), the very indifferent story given to Natalie Portman to address the situation she is living in, and on and on. Why were The Guardians even there? Another complete waste! How do you manage to waste Chris Pratt and Brad Cooper too? Not to mention the star!! Hemsworth worked unbelievably hard to prepare for this movie and even he was wasted in this nothing burger, poorly conceived and genuinely indifferent direction with no story, certainly not one worth telling, of what could shoulda woulda been THE blockbuster of the summer! WHO LET THIS HAPPEN!! I'm very worried that the wrong people will get the idea that there isn't a Thor story left to tell when this actor, who has basically dedicated his career to playing him and cares every bit as much as Benedict Cumberbatch does about portraying Dr. Strange, won't get credit where it's due because so much trust was placed in the wrong director because he had a hit with Ragnerok. He keeps saying he didn't want to make it again when that's exactly what he did! This story called for a script that took the material seriously, including humour that hit the target instead of lame 6 year old jokes! And mostly it needed the time, that extra 40 minutes given to Dr. Strange, to fully give Gorr the time he needed to show us his rage and anguish becoming the God Butcher, there's never been an actor better qualified to play a character with the depth of this one (think Oscar Isaac as Moon Knight, where was Christian Bale's chance to bring his incredible performance out of the shadow because he was robbed of story time?). And also time to truly let us feel that Natalie's Jane Foster was the love of Thor's life who this all powerful god could do nothing to save? Where was their moment? Honestly Mr. Waititi, I don't think you wanted to make another Thor movie period and you should have been big enough to pass on it or get help when you knew your script wasn't nearly enough to properly serve the characters in a movie that clearly WASN'T Ragnerok but an epic tale which you admittedly said you filled with every single suggestion received by 6 year olds. How could you? How do you sleep? You're the king of comedy in New Zealand but you're more than that, you can be overly silly but you're extremely intelligent and must have known this was headed off the rails early enough to save it from a near complete disaster! WHAT WERE YOU THINKING???

Elvis
(2022)

Disappointed
I was really looking forward to seeing this and thought with the run time it would tell a great story. I had faith in this young man's acting ability to give us an in-depth, richly developed story of the man behind the fame and hits. He wasn't given that opportunity, but only to give a great stage Elvis impersonation. I left not feeling enriched by the experience or feeling that I knew more about the man and frankly I was baffled by what the intention of this film was. We've seen Elvis impersonator acts, he's probably been the most impersonated celebrity ever, only Robert DiNero saying, 'Are you talking to me?' Runs a distant second. As good as Austin is, he didn't perform all of the music, certainly not live, he is young and his performance was incredibly energized and that energy level never dipped even though Elvis was ageing through the film. I wondered if I hadn't realized going in it was a musical, but soon was aware it wasn't even that. In fact, I can only guess that the hope was that people would be so mesmerized by the stage impression that they wouldn't be left wanting for an actual fact inspired biopic. Not so much.

The one area that was thrown in awkwardly was the relationship between rock and roll and black music of the day. But it's a known part of Elvis Presley's story that he never credited the black community roots that defined him as many other artists did and he's not respected in that community for exactly that. It's conveyed as background and it's deceptive to the audience misleading them into thinking Elvis acknowledged this influence, there's movie trickery here. We're shown that he was influenced largely by his experience in gospel churches etc and that's telling a part of his story that he actually never acknowledged. They never show him as a person off stage, there's no dialogue about this important aspect of his story, so it's not an out and out lie, but it's definitely a misrepresentation that wants to make the audience believe that he was aware of the importance of black musical culture on him and he may have been fully aware in his personal life but was given misguided advice to not acknowledge it given the times. And yet he never did as The Beatles, and too many musicians to name, did speak to in the press and other media.

Anyway, if you want to see a pretty good, if not one of the best, Elvis impersonators for 2 1/2 hours by all means spend your time and money. For me? I kept waiting for an actual movie to start taking me on a journey through the life of Elvis and it ended without ever starting.

Invasion
(2021)

Beautiful, and a different take entirely on the Alien Invasion Predictable Story Line
Don't fall for the reviews from I'd say a younger audience who I suppose expected one more very predictable story of 1) Aliens are spotted 2) Aliens try and make contact 3) Earth overreacts 4) there's a huge battle of special effects that the earth's military approach usually wins 5) Yawn and feel glad it was free at least. This production is not that same old story. It's beautiful to watch, it takes it's time to develop and actually has something to say. It comes from a handful of people across the globe who are scientists, a psychic youth who has visions with his epileptic seizures, a Japanese girl who is a speech specialist from mission control who is watching the woman she loves travel to the space station, a military fighter in Afghanistan who mysteriously loses his platoon and finds himself alone in the desert, etc. They take time developing the stories of these characters so you are interested in them and care about how they are dealing with the initial strange events from their very different perspectives. I gave it a try and was ready to turn it off at the first sign of a repeat of so many invasion movies that follow the same plot, except Arrival a few years ago now, but was pleasantly surprised when aliens weren't immediately on the attack but slowly invading with biological occurrences that you really had to watch closely to wonder about to a much slower arrival of strange partly bio partly mechanical beings that seemed to share the same controlling brain etc. But what makes the journey worthwhile to the very unexpected ending is the people you've come to know who experience the invasion quite differently because they come from very different backgrounds and cultures. This is worth your time while so many are a complete waste of time in this genre. It's not like anything I've ever seen before and the cinematography is beautiful, holding long beautiful shots until you're able to really feel what you're looking at. If you need rapid fire senseless action to maintain interest this may not be for you, if you're looking for a very different take on a fantastic event if it actually were to happen, give this one a chance. Remember the first three episodes of anything worth your time is usually developing the story to come and the people who are going to tell it. If you don't want or need to know or care about people beyond a stereotype than look elsewhere for a show you'll forget seeing within minutes where this story stays with you with an ending that leaves you in a state of wonder.

Intrusion
(2021)

Oh yes do! Do believe the awful reviews!
It's such a train wreck, if you start and can see the end within ten minutes you'll only keep watching for the same reasons you would watch a train wreck! For whatever weird reason you sometimes can't stop yourself or maybe you're a glass half full type and have some faint hope it'll pull itself together, it doesn't. And don't confuse great cinematography with a great house. It's an interesting home, nowhere near where they say it is unless Massachusetts is near a desert. There's no eye candy, there's no reason to believe that this marriage has survived 12 years without her guessing something strange is up with hubby, there's no reason to believe they're a couple at all actually. No questions, well I think there's a total of 3, are answered, mainly because they really aren't questions, certainly not provocative ones, not even enough for the local one good casting choice, the head detective, to pursue investigating .You know that kind of breathless faint shock you have when a bad movie suddenly ends and you get that you actually did watch what you just watched? That's the prize here. You're reward for either ignoring or not believing user reviews. Or thinking that the two ridiculously good ones are actually written by wiser souls who really get the depth we all missed and you buy it, knowing you are one of those kinds of above average movie watchers. I am, and trust me, they couldn't be more wrong. There's far too many good viewing opportunities to be wasting your time on this kind of absolute drivel.

The Little Things
(2021)

Better the second time
I read through these reviews and wonder if people writing them paid attention to their own brain noise than the dialogue. The comment about the dog? Denzel said before he ever left to the dog, don't blame me, 'I'm not the one who wandered off for two weeks' expository information to let you know that the dog does have other haunts and you don't need to worry about him when D. Doesn't return right away. And they've had people being chased on dark lonely stretches of road try to lose the follower by getting off the road and try to get help plenty of times, usually a set up for a murder scene which was expected and didn't happen so her actions are questionable by one reviewer instead of wondering why they planned that scene to be exactly as it was. Again, they needed the one that got away in their back pocket for later in the movie to ID Jared, it's far more interesting that she's no good as a witness because due to a quick trip to the washroom she sees him being brought in for questioning. It was done this way to highlight the rules of police work. They honestly don't have money or time to make useless scenes in movies, or lines that you ignore. They quickly dealt with any concerns for the dog and established an eye witness in an early scene that most movie goers would have thought would end another way. I've said in reviews of movies like Momento, Tenet, Inception, etc. Any with complex plots just pay attention! That's all they're asking, you're questions were answered if you simply paid attention to the dialogue and plot points that ALL matter. Also, I find it amusing that in some comments it would seem the writer thinks the actor's actions are thought up themselves rather than following a script. That scene where the girl pulls into a possibly open public place for help? We don't know we're going to be facing an ambiguous ending at this point, and that action on her part is the audience's first and only chance to see the actual murderer, to pay close attention to the walk, body, build, clothes, etc to actually have for later to compare to the possible murderer they later believe is the killer, and I'll just say, if you took note of those things earlier? It's far less ambiguous in the end.

Remi Malik left us with a very unexpected reaction to Denzel's last pat on the back, that's my boy moment? It was as if a light went off in his mind, I think his mumbling right after was to address that reaction and accept what he'd done and he was going to have to accept how sometimes police work might involve making the evidence or actions fit the crime, not the other way round. Denzel had been left with the girl he accidentally took for the perp and in the end, Remi is seen ruminating about the last girl he desperately wanted to find that night to justify his actions as much as prove beyond a doubt that regardless of how, he got his man. Well acted and a bit choppy disclosing Denzel's past in the editing, but not horrible. If you like a good slightly type of noir movie and these actors in particular it's free with your movie channel subscription now and I've watched it three times, you see more every time, one viewing leads to snap decisions and reviews demanding answers that the movie clearly gave if you'd only been watching and listening more carefully.

Tenet
(2020)

No matter how many times I watch I see it differently
Do watch PREDESTINATION starring Ethan Hawke. He's a 'time travelling temporal agent' who keeps trying to get the one that got away. I have a strong suspicion Nolan saw this movie more than once, one of Hawke's best, the breakout performance of Sarah Snook (Succession) who is a marvel here. If you liked Tenet, you'll love this precursor in theme. It takes more than one watch to fully get it, like Tenet, but if these themes of time could be manipulated each film has much to offer on the subject. Also Heinline's short story that Hawke's movie was based, this famous sci-fi writer must also have been read by Nolan.

Dexter
(2006)

A new season!
The Best television series ever that definitely died the worst death ever will have a chance to redeem itself with at least one season, and with Clyde Phillips at the helm, who originally brought the books to life, it's got a great chance of doing just that. It would be fantastic if it is enticing enough to bring Michael back on board for more of what was absolutely one of the best characters ever brought to life on the smaller screen, talk about a match made in heaven! I am so glad I check this App daily and jumped out of my socks when I saw this news while browsing around. MORE DEXTER? YAY!!!

Big Sky
(2020)

One trope after another..
Maybe RP saw the writing on the wall and got out? The weirdly helpful Deputy isn't quite dumb enough to have left him alive. The overbearing mother with the constant berating creates a serial killer type, uh, every time? And he makes enough $ to move out anyway? Please. Every girl is a ten except the 'pal', who's a ten in disguise to make the rest more believable? Again? The 'we're separated, not broken up' notion from the 50's? I don't think they bought it then! The phoney misplaced anger at his 'new girl', the one case of 2 missing girls triggers a sudden awareness of 500 reported missing? The instant suspicion of the deputy, oh my god, none of this, including updating killing to trafficking, is more than a fill in the blank character description, followed by watching them do exactly as expected. I thought Big Little Lies was overrated not to mention, ouch, the one moment wonder, The Undoing, but this guy, Kelley, looked more surprised than anyone winning that first Emmy, never a good thing. Ha! The trucker actually just said, 'I'm taking you to the national republic of None of your Business?' Even he questioned that line! That did it for me folks! My ears and my intelligence harmed in one blow.

Who Let the Dogs Out
(2019)

Truly a story worth watching
I watched this after it's early release and I don't want to mention a spoiler, but I watched it recently and something significant has been removed at the end. I do like the current ending, describing collective thought as jazz, amazing metaphor, but there was a bit removed after? Why? It really was amazing!

The Loudest Voice
(2019)

You will learn as much as you are entertained
I hadn't heard the press, this series came as a complete surprise to me, and because I'm a CNN gal, a lot of the content was 'news' (sorry) to me. I saw Russell Crowe on Colbert the week before it aired, I don't think they even talked about it much, but I noticed Crowe had a very faint voice, in a week I knew why. The title was something that Ailes himself obviously believed to be true, and what could be harder on an actor with tons of dialogue to be delivered at the top of his voice? He's incredible, the story is truly a must see, the tag title could have been the making of Donald Trump', the acting is so extraordinary that you get that, known by those who've experienced it, horrible feeling that comes over a woman right before someone is going to use her in the fashion he was known for, (it behooves me to fully understand that kind of ability of an actor when they can actually reach through the screen and make you feel so intensely in your living room as you see the goosebumps rise on your arms). I truly didn't know the popularity of Fox News, I feel foolish, I thought it was a joke, and because it's so well watched, the watchers themselves simply didn't want to know how bad this person was, what the network is really all about, the kinds of people who were involved in its start up and its continued popularity regionally, and they certainly don't want their eyes opened because that's what this does. The story could not be more timely or well told, with superb acting, and nothing, absolutely nothing adds up to low viewership, other than the previous statement. It's an astonishing piece and I can't recommend it highly enough, I watch each episode 2-3 times during the week. Whatever your politics, WATCH THIS!

Sharp Objects: Milk
(2018)
Episode 8, Season 1

Can't believe the misinterpreted reviews
Did you watch to the end of the credits? You must! It tells you who killed the girls!! The entire ending is explained and, why on earth is someone asking, why did Camille eat the dinner? SHE WAS TRYING TO POISON HERSELF TO PULL THE ATTENTION FROM HER SISTER!! And if you watch to the end of the credits, you will find out why Amma couldn't tell on her mother! There's nothing missing, nothing unanswered, and now that Camille is wise, did you SEE THE TEETH? Maybe there's more to tell but I doubt it. They even eluded many times to how this could be inherited? THINK ABOUT IT!!! If it wasn't Camille? Who? Jeez, it's not even hard!
