Fellow Travelers
(2023)

Long overdue
I guess Matt Bomer has been waiting for his whole career for a role like this. And tbh, we all have been looking forward to a show like this but never thought it would actually happen. It's still early to decide whether the show is good. It's promising and I believe it marks the beginning of more mainstream series delving into LGBTQ+ storylines.

In the first episode, I can really see the tension between Bomer and Bailey. Even though they might have tried a little too hard, I can still feel their vibe and whole cast seemed decent. The storyline seemed to be a bit orthodox. Let's just take it as a good adaptation of a readable M/M romance with a touch on some serious topics. I'm sure it will do just fine.

Gossip Girl
(2021)

Resembles the original show in a different way
I am not trying to get an education from this show. Obviously. So I have very low expectations which is I just want it to be relevant. I have watched the first 4 seasons of the original show and stopped not because it's not addictive enough but it seems too irrelevant to my life.

This one is surely more relevant and up-to-date but there is something missing. The brutality of sheer drama is nowhere to be found in the new show. Maybe it's a sigh of our time because anyone can get canceled in a minute and no one can walk away from that kind of mess Blair or Serena or Chuck were once in. Still, I kind of want that back.

The show is of course addictive. If you are a gg fan and have nothing to do on weekends, watch it.

There is one aspect I particularly dislike about the show is the teachers. They're depicted so vile and insensible and ruthless and jealous and indignant to an extent that I wonder how can they be teachers in the first place and what they did to their students is disturbingly immoral.

Heartstopper
(2022)

Saccharine
The plot is such trite but it's amusingly simple and easy-to-watch. The drama is not tense yet the growth of each character is obvious and touching. Sometimes we don't need Brokeback mountain like epic love story. A loving high school couple will just do the trick.

Btw, Olivia Colman slays as usual.

Life After Life
(2022)

They tried to deal with a lot of topics but failed.
The series itself is sweet and healing owing to good editing and music. But its discussion on each topic is skin deep. I can see they try to talk about love, growth, family, war, women, fate and so on yet what touched me the most and was expressed the most the love of family. Scenes regarding Ursula and her father, Izzy and teddy are heartbreakingly sweet. Some other scenes regarding certain failed life time is heartbreakingly sad. The only problem is that they made the topic discussed from each lifetime so obvious that it became tedious. And killing Hitler is actually kind of funny.

All in all, it is a beautiful and poetic production.

Something Like Summer
(2017)

CRINGE!!!!!!
I used to only check reviews on each movie but never wrote one. This is my first comment because this movie has really struck me speechless.

It's actually an interesting story. I came across the novel by accident and fell in love with the something like ... gay universe. I recommended the series to my friend and he told me there was actually a movie adaptation. I was so excited at first but after the first 5 minutes, I realized I had seen it before and given it up because back then I thought it was disturbingly cringe. Ok I gave it another shot because I love this series so much and it's nothing but cringe.

From the adaptation perspective, it's a failure. The main reason is that the way Jay Bell wrote the series is plot-dense. The series is like a high-schooler diary (not in a bad way) so it is absolutely not possible to cram it into 2 hours. As a result, the movie left out a great deal of important details. For me, it is more of an illustration of the book than a movie. If I haven't read the series, I am sure I will never understand what's going on in each scene before it moves suddenly to some years later.

From the casting perspective, I disagree with some of the previous reviews. Allison is actually really great with sweat voice and satisfactory acting. Ben, Jace and Tim are total disaster. Especially for Tim, he is supposed to be the most handsome one given the fact that his beauty is constantly mentioned in the book. Their acting.... let's just not talk about it.

From the cringe perspective, the movie is soooo awkward. Everything seems cheap and fake. From their motives, dialogue, emotion to the setting and musical, it's just screaming we are underfunded! All these important scenes in the first book are either cut out or carried out in complete awkwardness. They made every line sound ridiculous and emotionless. So I didn't feel particularly touched but sorry for these actors and actresses because they must have felt embarrassed as well. As for the some years passed by part, they really should have done more.

Anyway, I really appreciate their efforts. The something like series is really good so if you have found the movie somewhat intriguing but haven't read the series yet, please read it. Then you will understand what I mean by this is illustration but not an adaptation.
