Goodfellas
(1990)

One of the best gangster films
Great movie, really well paced, very fast, great acting, plenty of great lines and characters. I rated this film higher than I did Godfather 2, but that's because this film hits something purely subjective in me which elevates it to that higher level. I just enjoy it more, despite both films probably being among similar levels with Godfather 2 probably being better in a few different ways.

12 Angry Men
(1957)

Classic flick
Great acting, all of it happens in one room.

Inside Llewyn Davis
(2013)

really really really really good
Great story about an artist who has lost his passion in the thing he loves and is still struggling to accomplish what he's had been trying to do with his partner; become a successful folk musician. What we see is the antithesis of what you'd expect from the Greenwich folk crowd which is a community of people who love this music and support each other because of it. What we see is a man's dead dreams and his struggle to even remember anything that was good about them. Brilliant music performances.

Spring Breakers
(2012)

Looks Great but Feels Slow
I was surprised by what this film turned out to be which is like a weird story about a group of college girls who get into crime sprees. It's a good movie with a lot of interesting visuals but it does feel really slow at some times. Worth a watch though.

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens
(2015)

Good but super tame
It's absolutely hack unimaginative re-telling of the original films but it's pretty fun and has some great looking scenes. Rey is boring and Finn's comedy is bad but I think Kylo Ren is an unorthodox villain which is pretty cool.

Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi
(2017)

It's a mess
I think this film has a lot of good stuff in it and in terms of character development it's good, especially for the main character Rey who I found very dull in the last movie, they really flesh her out here and especially her relationship with Kylo Ren. However overall the movie is really messy. The plots all over the place, Rose and Finn's storyline is just trash, Poe and Hillary Clinton's also took me out of the film a lot with just some really poor writing (Poe should have been court martialed and executed), and the last 30 minutes of this film are terrible. One of the most annoying parts of this film however is how many times it subverts your expectation's and promises to go in an interesting direction but does absolutely nothing interesting with it and the result is a film where it really feels like nothing much has happened and the rebellion ends at pretty much the same point it started. And this film in not a leftist film or a piece of mainstream anti-capitalism stop saying that you sound like an idiot.

La battaglia di Algeri
(1966)

Great and Conflicting Movie
A really well made and fascinating film about the beginning of the big anti-imperialist war that took place Algeria against France. A conflict which would be incredibly contentious war in France, especially in regard to torture of enemy militants. This film is really well done about what is essentially a terrorist group in Algiers fighting for their freedom against their French oppressors. While I think this group is largely sympathetic they also commit some fairly grotesque acts towards French people living in Algiers. In terms of filmmaking this makes the dynamic between the French forces and insurgent group very interesting.

HyperNormalisation
(2016)

Long But Worth It
Hypernormalisation is an interesting film. I think when watching it you have to keep in mind that more than anything Adam Curtis is an idealist and he is telling you a story more so than he's telling you a history. Some of the historical details aren't really up to snuff but the overarching point is what's really important I think. I don't agree with a lot of Curtis' conclusions but his ultimate point about politics becoming this hypernormalised spectacle is one that is very worthwhile.

They Live
(1988)

Interesting Film
It's very schlocky, acting's a bit all over the place but this is still a movie I really enjoy. The action is fun, the one-liners are enjoyable but the best things about this film are the interesting concept which is best explained I think in Slavoj Zizek's film "The Pervert's Guide To Ideology" and the great costume, set design and Carpenter's consistently good soundtrack.

The Thing
(1982)

Carpenter's Best
Really tense horror movie with some great body horror and really good performances. Reminds me a lot of Alien.

Kurenai no buta
(1992)

An Absolutely Beautiful Adventure Film
This is the first film of Studio Ghibli's that I've seen and I think it is still my favourite. It is just a stunning and beautiful film about a pilot pig vigilante and his escapades in an Italy turning into despotic fascist state. It is just really beautiful.

Seven Psychopaths
(2012)

First Half is really promising, lets it down in the Second Half
Martin McDonagh's second feature film is one which starts with a huge amount of promise, with a great cast and some fast paced and fun dialogue for the first 30 minutes or so and a pretty classic premise. However I think the film really starts to decline from there as the movie tries to something different by subverting what you'd expect in a movie like this but in the end is let down by basically everything in the film from the acting to the writing and even just the plot really. 6 might be a bit harsh and is probably marking my disappointment for a movie from a director who made one of my favourite films but a 6/10 isn't really that bad, it's still a decent flick. I'd recommend it.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day
(1991)

One of the best action films of the 80s
Just a great action film with an interesting plot, great characters and really satisfying practical effects. Main plot does have sort of a repetitive streak throughout the movie but it does not affect the rose-tinted glasses I view this film through.

Meeting People Is Easy
(1998)

Great film and interesting music documentary
To someone who's not a big radiohead fan this film may be boring and uninteresting due to the fact that it doesn't really introduce who the band is and what was their journey. One of the most interesting things about this film is the fact that it has absolutely no narration over it. Akk the dialogue comes from filmed interviews, news clips, or stuff that was filmed of the band by the doc crew. What comes out of it is a phenomenal film which documents what was probably one of the most difficult periods for the band as they nearly split up during the world tour of their incredibly successful OK Computer. Some of my favourite scenes from any film come from this documentary and it remains as one of the most interesting films I've seen.

In Bruges
(2008)

A Perfect Film
Absolutely wonderful film in every sense of the word. Nothing was missed here, the dialogue, the actors, the characters, and the plot are perfect with a wonderful setting and soundtrack to back it up. What appears to be a standard dialogue focused crime movie turns out to be much more than that and the end product results in what is in my opinion one of the best films ever made.

The Silence of the Lambs
(1991)

One of the greats
Great film, Hannibal Lector is probably one of the creepiest and scariest villains in a film that I've ever seen, a real monster in human skin. The film is incredibly tense and has some great body horror, really gross stuff. The best parts of the movie for me are the scenes between Starling and Lector, both of whom are great and interesting characters backed up with wonderful acting from Foster and Hopkins.
