Malignant
(2021)

Would be a -1 if it was allowed. Disgusting without any redeeming qualities.
Did not realize who the director was until I finished watching this mess. Then after the 3rd act disgust-o-fest I see it is the same guy who did Saw and The Nun which were 2 of the worst and most depraved movies I've ever tried to watch. I am really tolerant but this guys garbage is beyond awful. Aquaman was watchable but his horror flicks are un-redeemably gross and depraved. Just awful!

Elizabeth Harvest
(2018)

Surprisingly good, though some holes!
Did not have great expectations for this unknown sleeper of a horror movie. Starts off slow as this old man and his "way too hot/young for him" wife arrive at his secluded modern and rich estate. She seems half drugged and it is weird that a bride wouldn't have seen her new husband's estate before. Looked like some "same old" garbage but the plot twists soon enough and it grabbed me from then out. The bride's "goofiness" is explained slowly but surely. There are several holes in the plot that bugged me a bit but it was still a cut above most schlock horror junk! Weird and bizarre like good horror should be!

Spoiler alert(don't read on): So, in the diary flashback, when Elizabeth #2 escapes and the cop Logan comes to the house for an explanantion, Claire and Henry say that she is Claire's cousin ( or some relative ) and she's mentally unstable and prone to make up things etc. They cut away and we are to "expect" that Henry paid Logan off to cover-up the matter. But later in the timeline, Logan treats Elizabeth as Henry's young bride and asks where she is etc. So what happened that Logan went from being told she was Claire's unstable cousin to "accepting her" as Henry's wife? Kind of a big leap to not explain!

Also, the son/clone Oliver was way way too adept for a blind guy. Not just shooting and killing Logan with Elizabeth #5 in close proximity - how did he know he wouldn't hit her? But he floated around without any hint that he couldn't see anything. Just a gauze. Too handi-capable for my tastes.

Tully
(2018)

NOT A COMEDY!
Why anyone would refer to this as a COMEDY I have no idea. Like with most movies there are a few funny moments or light moments but the overall theme is no where near Comedic.

More like mental tragedy!

I actually liked the "The Sixth Sense" twist/reveal as it explained a lot of weird incongruities to that point. My girlfriend actually picked up on a tell when her brother doesn't seem to "know she has engaged the night nanny" when he would have been getting billed for her by that point. I told her maybe it was a pre-pay thing or the bill was just delayed/lagged but it ended up she was right to think that was a tell.

In retospect, if she was up cleaning and cooking cupcakes and doing all that the "nanny" was supposed to have done, her husband would have noticed she was almost never in bed. I know the guy was supposed to be selfish and un-knowing but come on, if she had been up most of the night every night he would KNOW! He can't be that un-aware! Plus she did really seem to be physically and mentally better - to everyone. I know that is part of the deception but her breakdown would have been gradual and not "looks better" then "hits a wall/off-bridge".

I would think her doctors and family would monitor her more closely since she had evidently had problems after her son was born. They really should have tried the night nanny thing. Most new moms have some help from the grandmothers or someone. Since she knew her hubby wasn't much of a help she could have reached out much more sooner.

Kind of a movie that pointed toward family planning and the need for birth control for some people! Go batty after your son with some form of Autism is born, and then have a 3rd kid when you are struggling with 2 already? Screams for responsible parenting decisions and "choice"!

Lean on Pete
(2017)

What a downer movie!
Not my idea of entertainment to have soooo much thrown at a 15 year old kid. I guess it was intended as a reality drama but it was depressing to watch. I kept waiting for something decent to happen to him and it was slow coming and not that much of a payoff when it did - that justified such misery.

More like "Don't Lean on Pete". I mean seriously, when you are relieved that at least the horse didn't suffer too much - whereas the 15 year old DOES. That just isn't fun in the least.

I know it was intentional, but when he was temporarily taken in by the two veterans on their farm he should have just STAYED THERE until he got a hold of the guy from the bar where his Aunt used to work. He knew the guy's name and number he could have kept calling until he hooked up. Those guys seemed okay with him hanging out there for a while and they weren't a threat really. When he did talk to him he should have gotten the new husband's last name from the guy. It just couldn't have been that hard to track her down - even for a 15 y.o.!

Now my girlfriend disagreed but what would have been so bad about him being taken in by Child Services? They would have fed him and clothed him and probably been helpful in tracking down his Aunt for him. It isn't like they want to keep kids in the system if they have a relative who wants them. He had a good idea she did, so why not let them take care of you for a while? Better than being on the street at 15. Staying in a trailer with a loony who robs you in the middle of the night!

I understand that when Pete was alive he couldn't turn himself in and have any chance of saving him - not that he ever did anyway as his Aunt was unlikely to be able to keep a horse fed/cared-for. I get it he wasn't thinking just desperate to save Pete somehow. But once he got killed how could it be better to wander the desert with NOTHING? I guess he feared arrest for stealing the Horse but he was street-savvy enough to know that was unlikely being he was so young.

He also would likely have called the bar and started trying to contact his Aunt a lot earlier than he did.

Just too depressing and downer for my tastes. Well acted but the subject matter was joyless. I had hoped Buschemi's character might step up and help the kid, but no he stayed a curmudgeon-type burnout. Caring more about table manners than people. Realistic maybe, but nothing redemptive.
