Downloading Nancy
(2008)

This was hard for me to watch, but I watched it anyways
I think this was pretty accurate to what happens with online dating. In this arena, you have a lot of people that may not be the most adept at in-person relationships, but they are willing to commit to and follow through with promises from online-relationships. This is an example of that case.

The problem with being online is that you can publish your innermost thoughts 24/7; even at times when you probably should not. However, the person who gets your communication doesn't know the difference between those times you really mean it and those times when you don't.

If you are the kind of person who says crazy things when online (and perhaps a little intoxicated), you should bear in mind that someone might really believe what you said. Because of this risk, if you are someone who reads an online statement from someone, you should take it with a proverbial "grain of salt" until you actually meet the person (if that ever happens). However, if it seems genuine, you should probably follow through with it (like in this movie; I would applaud the makers heartily).

I think I have just added an extra layer of complexity to online dating, but so-be-it. You can always buy me off with an offer of Colt 45.

Cheers infomaven

Living Out Loud
(1998)

A keeper
It's funny; I go to see quite a few movies, but rarely buy them. I made an exception for this one because it resonated with me at a number of different levels, and I gain insights into the story and plot each time I see it.

The music is excellent (the soundtrack is a stand-alone work of art), and there are some wickedly funny scenes that actually made me laugh out loud (the other LOL). But then there is a sobering backdrop of reality that makes the lead characters more realistic.

Unlike some other commentators, I think the fantasy scenes are crucial because they force you to slow down and take a closer look at things that would ordinarily go by in a blur.

A Good Day to Be Black & Sexy
(2008)

Sex on the big screen in a new way
With a little fear and trepidation, I saw this film at Sundance in Jan 2008. I ended up enjoying it immensely! Instead of one story with a single set of characters, the movie used several vignettes (each with different actors) to cover different sexual scenarios with realism, sensitivity, humor and intelligence. The camera angles and editing style lent a visceral "reality TV" feel to the movie, but never was it pornographic or in bad taste.

This set of stories have a little something for everyone because these experiences and situations are universal to being human. Two of the stories in particular still make me chuckle when I think of them because I've been there (well, almost!). Lastly, the soundtrack is a perfect match for the film. Filmmaker Dennis Dortch spent some time as a recording engineer before deciding to go into film, and this results in a soundtrack that is tight and very complimentary to the mood; a work of art in its own right.

Sleep Dealer
(2008)

Excellent flick
I saw this at Sundance in Jan 2008 and was captivated. I think of science fiction as a prediction of what life could be like in the future, and the technological scenarios depicted in this film are quite close to becoming reality.

Rivera crafted an absorbing story that raises pertinent questions about relations between the US and Mexico, labor policy, immigration and the often overlooked fact that water is a precious, limited natural resource.

On top of these rather serious macro topics, I like the micro (personal) growth and transformation seen in the protagonist as he goes through this story.

Well done!
