The Magnolia Network series “Restored” just returned for a seventh season with host Brett Waterman, who isn’t doing just another cable-tv house-flipping show; this series is a serious look at the historic preservation of houses from a wide range of architectural styles.
With his keen eye, Waterman is able to coax homes back into shape, reinventing previously poorly remodeled areas or reimagining original spaces, all the while giving the viewers the historical background to support the accuracy of the updates.
Listen to the podcast here:
“A place that’s been there for at least 30 or 40 years has an overall impact on the greater community, and it’s architecturally supported by other structures and memories for many people that are already there,” said Waterman on the latest episode of the Variety podcast “Strictly Business.”

Waterman, who grew up in Orange County, discovered at a young age that he had a passion for preserving old buildings.
“I’ve loved architecture since I was a kid,” the Restored host told Showbiz Cheat Sheet in an interview. While spending time on his family’s farm in Oklahoma, he became “enthralled” with a nearby old dairy.

It returns to TV on March 28, having made the jump from DIY Network to Magnolia Network. Waterman recently chatted with Showbiz Cheat Sheet about how the new season came about, his love for historic architecture, and what makes his show different from other home renovation series.

Restored aired for five seasons on DIY Network. When that channel became Magnolia Network in early 2022, Fixer Upper’s Chip and Joanna Gaines were keen to make Waterman’s show part of the lineup. But getting the ball rolling on fresh episodes took some time due to the “madness” of the pandemic and the demands of launching a new network.

The new 4K restoration of Dennis Hopper’s mad-wheeling 1980 feature Out of the Blue opens with text detailing the fascinating behind-the-scenes turmoil that led to its creation. Hopper was only to star in the film, intended as a family-friendly drama about a rebellious young girl named Cebe (Linda Manz) and her reform by a kind therapist. Unhappy with the footage they were seeing, producers fired writer-director Leonard Yakir and planned to shut production down. But Hopper, still in director jail after the notoriously chaotic production and dismal reception of his previous feature The Last Movie, convinced them to not only continue, but restart it from scratch with him as director for an entirely new, far more provocative tale.
In the opening scene we see Cebe’s father, Don (Hopper), drunkenly barrel his big-wheeler truck directly into a school bus full of children, with Cebe right up front in the seat next to him.

Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia app is set to launch on July 15, 2021, it was announced Thursday. On cable, Discovery’s DIY Network will rebrand as the Magnolia Network in January 2022.
The Magnolia app will be a free add-on for Discovery+ subscribers. That wasn’t always the plan — or at least, it was not always the extent of the plan. Originally, the partnership between Discovery, Inc. and the Gaineses was going to result in the linear cable channel (DIY), a TV Everywhere app and a standalone Magnolia SVOD service. However, the creation and recent launch of the all-encompassing Discovery+ streaming service changed the plans for that final piece.
In addition to episodic entertainment content, the Magnolia app will also include workshops, recipes and have a retail shopping platform, among other functionalities. So there will still be plenty of opportunities for monetization.

Greg Quail and Jesse Fawcett.
Greg Quail and Jesse Fawcett have re-branded their trans-national production company Essential Media and Entertainment as the Eq Media Group and are boosting their slate of unscripted and scripted content.
With development and production hubs in Los Angeles, Sydney, Dallas, Vancouver and Auckland, Eq Media Group has a core staff of 40, with a current run-of-show employee count of 70.
Quail and Fawcett bought the Essential companies in March from the collapsed Kew Media Group.
President and executive producer Fawcett said: “We have focused on staff retention and are proud to say we haven’t lost any employees. Our team’s focus on content development has now tripled our production slate with further North American show announcements in the pipeline.”
CEO and executive producer Quail said the name Eq was chosen to signify Emotional Quotient or Emotional Intelligence, the elements which they say drive the best storytelling.

Greg Quail.
Essential Media Group (Emg) CEO Greg Quail and North American president Jesse Fawcett have purchased the Essential companies from the collapsed Kew Media Group.
The deal gives Quail and Fawcett full control of the group’s Us, Australian and New Zealand operations while Dave Cole, managing director of post house Two Dogs.TV, regains a minority stake.
“It’s been a very distracting time. We’re looking forward to getting back to business and making TV shows,” Quail told If today.
Emg was formed by the merger of Australia’s Essential Media and Entertainment, Fawcett’s La- based 11 Television, Quail Entertainment Us and the North American joint venture Essential Quail Television (Eqtv).
Jesse Fawcett.
Canada’s Kew Media bought Emg in 2018 for $32.8 million, $20 million in cash and the balance in shares.
The Toronto-based media conglomerate collapsed in February and Fti Consulting Canada was appointed to sell its assets to repay creditors.

Exclusive: After nearly three months navigating perilously choppy waters, with some of its best talent abandoning ship and a steady drip of damaging press, Canada’s Kew Media Group (Kmg) finally sunk last Friday. The global producer-distributor’s eight directors resigned, scores of others lost their jobs, and the company will now be stripped of its assets. For insiders caught up in the wreckage, the post-mortem has begun on how this still-young company unraveled, taking down with it a profitable UK distribution arm that had a library boasting some of the biggest TV shows of 2019.
Founded by media financiers Peter Sussman and Steven Silver, Kmg announced itself to the world with a $50M Ipo on the Toronto Stock Exchange in 2016. It embarked on a spending spree, acquiring or taking stakes in around 15 companies over two years, including Dance Moms producer Collins Avenue, Alex Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions, which made HBO...

In 1980, Dolly Parton’s big-screen debut in 9 to 5 went on to become the highest-grossing comedy film of the year, also earning Parton an Oscar nomination and a pair of Grammy awards for the now-classic theme song. Co-starring Parton, Lily Tomlin, and Jane Fonda as co-workers who decide to hold their “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot” of a boss (Dabney Coleman) hostage and transform their oppressive workplace into one of equality, the hilarious, over-the-top hijinks couldn’t disguise the film’s more resonant message, which has only strengthened in the current...
