The Shamrock Spitfire
(2024)

Meh...
The best part of the movie is the story and acting., and that's all that's good. They skipped getting a script writer, because the scenes are piecemeal. There isn't a singular view. I would've expected a movie about a very successful pilot to have focused on him mostly, though the story focuses on everything. The sound design had the sounds, though the sounds didn't usually match up to the screen. The lighting was washing out the scene in a lot of frames. The fight scenes did a good show of a "furball" but it's hard to track who is doing what. And the special effects are OK, though it's easy to tell. The biggest issue is the director and producer not having a point to focus on. Great idea for a story, mediocre execution, and not worth renting, wait until it's free and you're in a couch hole.

Poor Things
(2023)

The "highest" of art
This would be an interesting movie while using hallucinogens. Odd camera angles, starts off black and white, a duck combined with a dog, and scars that look fake. As many great actors as there are, the director is the only one to blame for an anti masterpiece. Who even let this get created and financed? This is a modern and more twisted Alice in Wonderland meets Frankenstein while the cameras are on drugs.

Yes, we want movies that aren't formulaic, though make movies that are relatable enough that it doesn't take a Havard class on abstract movies to understand. It's movies like this that make me glad I don't have to waste much time. Someone needs to have a psychiatrist visit the director. Props to the crew and actors, boo to the director.

In with the Old
(2021)

Great show when non-professionals restore homes
The first two seasons were a breath of fresh air because it was every day people who were passionate about history and wanted to update the home to look like the home it was originally and stay true to the history, with a few upgrades in functionality for modern convenience. The third season is almost an advertisement for professionals, where they want an old home and make it modern, which seems to go against the title of the series, with the exception of Jeff Devlin, as he does respect the history and does it professionally and has a show that highlights it. Making old homes modern is a delicate balance, which most people get. Hopefully season 4 will go back to that.

While this show doesn't show the slow, arduous process and pitfalls, they do acknowledge the drudgery of it multiple times. Old homes are hand built and there wasn't standards like today, but that's what gives them character. This show does a decent job highlighting that.

The show is nicely paced, the hosts are the homeowners, and it's divided into 3 distinct sections. It's a calm show to watch on weekends, though hearing more about the history would be nice.

The Matrix Resurrections
(2021)

A flat tasting soda with quality ingredients.
Much like Matrix 3, so many missed opportunities. The acting, choreography of fight scenes, and sound design were spot on. The story just lacked anything innovative. Had they worked with IT people to incorporate computers into the Matrix, something new might have happened. This screams that enough money was thrown at people to create a safe cash cow, rather than being innovative story tellers like the 1st 2 movies. Nothing new or original, glad I didn't pay theater prices and spend any extra time traveling. Everything but the story worked, music was same ole with a fresh coat of paint. The role reversal was just so wrong. New tricks for Neo fell flat. Where's the hunger of fresh story tellers that take a chance?

Arukimedesu no taisen
(2019)

The voice overs are worse than the worst Manga
I love history and love to hear about the other points of view. The Yamato would not use an 18" shell for anti aircraft. The actors who made the English translation either didn't try and made the voices cartoonish, or the director forced them to not even try to be "in the scene " . The special effects were spectacular.but the voice overs just made this a waste of money.

Cry Macho
(2021)

Very thoughtful movie!
This was similar to El Camino in depth of story telling, with more heart and minimal action. The rooster is an action hero!

Away
(2020)

Good acting, interesting premise, horrible execution.
So many technical issues it's crazy. It's apparent the year behind making this other than the special effects folks is nobody did any research. Military and Astronauts are team centric, and a team like this would've never happened. Tools are strapped to Astronauts, cables won't snag because engineers are much better and competent than what this show does. If there's drama in space, something really went wrong, like catastrophic wrong. Not worth the watch.

Bastille Day
(2016)

Inventive story, good action, better know French and English
Acting was sound, action was uniquely good, cinematography was spot on, sets were perfect, script flowed well and characters developed well.

My only complaint was there wasn't any subtitles for the French bad guys, though there was for the French good guys. This would've been better if the team added that part. I like subtitles to add to the international mix, though half done subtitles and not knowing what is going on is frustrating.

Overall a good movie, and almost worthy of being recommended.

The Shape of Water
(2017)

Made zero sense
While the acting was great, the story was a wash. Its a love story at best, because it's not sci-fi or drama. At jo point did I not want to pick up my tablet. Maybe there some type of artistry to this, and other than the sets crew that followed the "vision", this isn't art worthy to me.

Speed & Angels
(2008)

As a former Tomcat support crew, it was interesting and true
I worked in VF21 and 154 in Japan, which was my 2nd and 3rd squadron. I think this movie is as true as they come from a Naval aviation standpoint. The amount it takes to even get the opportunity to fly, and the amount of responsibility they have is incredible. We would make fun of J.O.'s as much as the new enlisted, like they kind of show, as what they do can put us all in danger on the deck, which you got to see in the film. The fact that an entire carrier is there to help support 120 pilots, aircrew, and the nation's interest, and the sacrifices that both the people in the service, and the families that support them is well represented. It wss fun to relive a lot of memories and explain things to others. I highly recommend this movie, and hope that Jay and Meagan are still flying, as it's people with their drive and attitude that help the guys on the ground, and people all over the world.

The Chosen One
(2010)

Surprising change for Rob
Like most everyone said, this is a large takeoff from Rob's previous films, and I was surprised, and impressed that he was able to play it off. He showed that he could act, and I think that if he could get a few more roles where he was not just a clown, then people might look at him differently. Case in point, remember Tom Hanks in Big, Splash, and Bosum Buddies? He is now only doing serious roles. I think Rob shows in this movie that he can act, and I would like to see him act in other movies. At least he took a gamble and tried something new. I think that the story was a bit far fetched in regards to one man saving a bird to make snow appear on a mountain, but I think that they did swing it around to make it work. This movie shows how a man can push down life to a dark hole, but can find redemption by facing fears and growing from them. I think that most people will not get the story unless they are open to something that will enlighten them. I think the only flaws to the movie is that it is billed as a comedy, when it is really a drama with some funny moments, and the camera flickering during the dream sequence. If you are open to some great acting, a touching story, and learning something, then I would recommend this movie.
