Ryan Gosling and Ana de Armas in Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

10. Blade Runner 2049

A sequel to one of the greatest science-fiction films ever made was met with understandable trepidation. But director Denis Villeneuve delivered a worthy successor, which included solid performances from Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford. It may have disappointed at the box office but, at time of writing, Blade Runner 2049 had the highest IMDb rating of this list, scoring 8.4 out of 10.

2
Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Hemsworth, and Tessa Thompson in Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

9. Thor: Ragnarok

The first two Thor movies are some of the least acclaimed of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so it was a pleasant surprise when this proved not only to be the funniest installment of the MCU to date but also, at time of writing, IMDb’s highest-rated movie of the franchise with 8.2 out of 10. It will also likely have offered some of the last moments of levity before things take a darker turn in Avengers: Infinity War.

3
Goran D. Kleut in Alien: Covenant (2017)

8. Alien: Covenant

Ridley Scott’s second prequel to Alien was back in the monster business, after taking a more subtle approach in Prometheus. The classic xenomorph returned to pick off an unwitting crew one-by-one, in a way that drew parallels with the 1979 original. Despite a disappointing box-office performance, a third in this trilogy of prequels is planned for 2019.

4
James McAvoy in Split (2016)

7. Split

Filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan was back in top form with this story of three girls who are kidnapped by a man (James McAvoy) with 23 distinct personalities and must escape before the emergence of frightful 24th. The trademark twist from the director behind The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable helped propel the movie into our Top 10.

5
Ben Affleck, Jason Momoa, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, and Ray Fisher in Justice League (2017)

6. Justice League

DC Comics fans have long-awaited a big screen team-up of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg, making this one of the most highly anticipated movies of 2017. Despite mixed reactions and a box-office result that has yet to surpass any other titles in the DC Extended Universe, further standalone films for all the heroes are moving ahead.

6
Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, and Karen Gillan in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)

5. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Marvel scored a surprise hit with Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014, ranking third at the worldwide box office that year with takings of more than $733 million. The return of Star Lord, Drax, Gamora, Rocket, and Baby Groot managed to surpass its predecessor by hitting $863.6 million. We're already looking forward to seeing more of these intergalactic misfits in Avengers: Infinity War.

4. Logan

After eight movies and 17 years as Wolverine, Hugh Jackman finally hung up his claws … and what an exit! Instead of turning in another glossy superhero movie, this was an R-rated drama of a broken man in his twilight days, with one final shot at redemption. It proved a critical success and a box-office smash, proof – as if any were needed – that doing something different with a beloved character can pay off.

8
Emma Watson and Dan Stevens in Beauty and the Beast (2017)

3. Beauty and the Beast

Fans of Disney’s 1991 animated musical classic helped this live-action remake become one of IMDb’s most popular movies of 2017. The casting of Harry Potter star Emma Watson as Belle also helped propel the movie to the top of this year’s box office, taking a massive $1.26 billion around the world.

9
Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman (2017)

2. Wonder Woman

The debut of Gal Gadot as Princess Diana of Themyscira, aka Wonder Woman, was the best thing to come out of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. So it should have perhaps come as no surprise that her standalone movie proved the most critically acclaimed and recorded the biggest U.S. box-office takings of the DC Extended Universe to date. The film also helped position Gadot as IMDb’s top star of 2017. Let’s hope DC bring some of the humor and heart that made Wonder Woman such a hit to their future features.

10
Bill Skarsgård in It (2017)

1. It

The first indication that a new adaptation of Stephen King’s It could be a hit came back in March, when a teaser became the most viewed online trailer in 24 hours to date – a record only recently topped by Avengers: Infinity War. The movie about a group of young friends plagued by visions of a creepy clown has since smashed all box-office records for horror movies and is the most successful King adaptation to date, taking $694 million at the worldwide box office. It also made Bill Skarsgård, who turned in a terrifying performance as Pennywise, IMDb’s top breakout star of 2017. It: Chapter Two is set for release in 2019.
