After Azaad, a rich man, rescues Shobha from a few bandits, she decides to marry him. Things take a turn when Shobha's family discovers that Azaad himself is a bandit.

In order to save her grandfather's mansion, Rama agrees to marry a much older male, Madanlal, who decides to sell some artifacts to prospective wealthy buyers, including Mr. and Mrs. Rai. The sale is hampered by heavy rains and the entry of a traveling painter-singer, Awara, as well as four bandits, including Baldev Singh, who is wanted by the police for the brutal murder of his wife.

Dr. Dharmesh (Rajendra Kumar) and Sita (Meena Kumari) are in love, and hope to marry on Dharmesh's return from abroad. When Dharmesh returns, he is devastated to find that Sita has married someone else. He then decides to devote the rest of his life at a cancer clinic. One of his patients is Ram (Raaj Kumar), who is critically ill, and has to be operated upon. Things progress well, until Dharmesh meets Ram's wife - none other than Sita. Dharmesh now has to battle with his conscience, and his medical ethics to save Ram or to let him pass away, so that he can marry Sita.

But Ramaiya is determined to address the workers' grievances, and he gets himself framed for theft; has the police on the lookout for him, and so Ramaiya goes into hiding. When Ramaiya does not show up for a workers' meeting, some believe that he has been bought by the mill management, and they decide to take the matters into their own hands - by burning the mill down, killing Kapoor and his family, and getting into direct confrontation with the local police, who have been issued orders to shoot-at-sight.

An army officer loses his memory, falls for a married woman, then regains part of his memory but forgets her.

Roshan lives a poor lifestyle in Bombay with his widowed mother, who thinks he is gainfully employed, but Roshan has made crime his career and picks pockets and gambles for a living. A gangster named Shankar wants to hire him, but he refuses. Then one day Roshan steals 3000 Rupees from a man named Mohan, who was about to remit this amount to his Madhopur-based widowed mother and unmarried sister Shukal, so that they can pay off the mortgage on their residence. When the money gets stolen, Mohan kills himself. A guilt-ridden Roshan travels to Madhopur, pays off their debt, and returns home without telling anyone about Mohan's demise. Madhopur Police subsequently find out that the money was stolen from Universal Bank and start an investigation. Roshan is faced with another challenge when Shukal and Manglu Mama come to the city to meet Mohan, and Roshan and Shukal fall in love with each other. To complicate their romance, a cabaret dancer, Rita, pretends to fall in love with Roshan and moves in with him and his mother while the Police close in on Roshan, threatening to expose him as a thief in his mother's and everyone's eyes.

She too is impressed by Devutt's poems and invites him over to her house for a party, and again both are attracted to each other. Knowing fully well that he cannot marry three women in his country, a tortured and uncertain Devdutt must now make up his mind as who he wants as his life-partner.
