Every Tim Burton Movie RANKED
Tim Burton is undeniably one of the most impressive and creative directors of all time, creating many iconic films that people still talk about today. Whether it's his two pivotal Batman films or his whimsical productions of "Beetlejuice," "Mars Attacks!" and "Edward Scissorhands," Burton has solidified himself as a living legend. With the release of "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," I thought it'd be the perfect time to rank all of the films he directed from worst to best. Yes, this means that films like "The Nightmare Before Christmas" will not count, although I may shift to including his producing credits later. I should also mention that I haven't seen every one of his films yet, and like my 2024 Movies RANKED, it's an IMDb list in the process. Granted, I have seen lots of his films before, but to be safe, I'll wait until I rewatch them before adding them to this list to avoid any potential bias from years past. Also, I'm unsure how long it will take to watch Burton's entire filmography, so don't expect this list to be complete for a while.
This list is entirely my opinion, so you don't have to agree. I'm just creating this for fun!

The first Depp/Burton collaboration is one of the most simultaneously heartwarming and heartbreaking films the latter has ever made. Johnny Depp is extraordinary as the titular naive yet kind Edward Scissorhands, a man built from scratch but with scissors for hands who finds family and romance in a town that both loves his skills and rejects him. Tim Burton and Mike Johnson directed a simplistic yet fantastical stop-motion animation with superb voice acting from the entire cast. In particular, Johnny Depp as Victor and Helena Bonham Carter as Emily, the titular Corpse Bride, do incredibly, as the nervous former accidentally marries the tragic latter in a misunderstanding. If there was any Burton film I loved growing up, but now I respect for showcasing the madman the director could be, it is this 80s gem! Paul Reubens always did enjoyable work as Pee-wee Herman, especially on this loony journey to retrieve his bike, which led to wacky shenanigans. I'm impressed by how good this adaptation of the musical turned out, with the standout aspects being the majestic score and Burton's direction. This gothic fantasy-horror film is undoubtedly one of the most underrated films in Tim Burton's entire filmography. Johnny Depp is incredible as Ichabod Crane, a detective in 1799 tasked with stopping the murder spree of the Headless Horseman. Burton's usual style is weirdly absent aside from one scene-ish, but it still manages to be a surprisingly good film based on actual events. The story of Margaret and Walter, a gifted painter and the pathetic man who decided to take credit for her work, was shocking, with great performances from Amy Adams and Christof Waltz - although supporting actor Danny Huston is who I'll remember. I've always enjoyed this Roald Dahl adaptation, and my thoughts upon rewatching have only marginally changed - for the better. The directing may not be peak Tim Burton, but it's over-the-top and wild, with a gonzo performance by Johnny Depp as the titular Willy Wonka. It didn't live up to its potential since it didn't use The Afterlife as much as the first and had an over-complicated plot, but it was satisfying! Michael Keaton, Jenna Ortega, and Willem Dafoe all did amazing as their characters, while the rest of the cast did well, and the practical effects are still gorgeous. "Dark Shadows" is fun, dumb, 5 minutes boring, 5 minutes fantastic, mainly ridiculous, and entirely decent; I enjoyed it! All the actors did well, with Johnny Depp as Barnabas and Eva Green as Angelique being the standouts, as the former tries to reenter family life and resurrect his business two centuries after the latter cursed him and had him buried. Ack. I'm unfortunately sad to report that this cult classic got worse on rewatch, but it's still an enjoyable ode to the B-movies of the 1950s. Jack Nicholson is hands down the standout of the show as both the President and Art Land, and he's more worth mentioning than the long stretches of this movie that were boring, and I laughed fewer times than I thought I would. I'm not too fond of this movie - I never was, and, upon my rewatch after my first viewing seven years later, sadly, maybe never will be. Burton's usual, vivid style is here, the actors do a great job, and I felt the relationship developing between Asa Butterfield's Jake and Ella Purnell's Emma. If you like this film, that's great, but as a person who thinks Burton somewhat lost his touch throughout the 2010s, regardless of my love for the guy, I didn't appreciate my rewatch of this Disney remake. Burton's usual style and color are drab here, and the plot is messy. It left me numb, but there's a campy performance from Crispin Glover and somewhat stunning CGI, so I encourage you to judge for yourself - I don't think a rewatch for me is due for a long time!
