Jimmy Kimmel at an event for The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards (2020)

It was a real virtual victory

The three-hour Emmys telecast deserves its own award for pulling off a groundbreaking production. Event HQ, erected inside the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles, was populated with celebrity cardboard cutouts, a Jason Bateman cameo, and other celebs materializing from backstage areas to present awards. More impressively, the production staff set up over 100 live video feeds for nominees around the world, and dispatched presenters in hazmat suits to honor the newly minted winners.

Eugene Levy and Dan Levy at an event for The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards (2020)

A historic sweep for "Schitt's Creek"

"Schitt's Creek" is over, but its record-breaking Emmys sweep will never be forgotten. Eugene Levy, Dan Levy, Catherine O'Hara, and Annie Murphy all took home prizes for their iconic portrayals of the Rose family, and the show rounded out the comedy category with honors for writing, directing, and outstanding comedy series. Raise a glass of Moira Rosé for one of the greats!

Regina King at an event for The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards (2020)

A comic adaptation clinched some major wins

HBO's "Watchmen" capped a historic Emmys run, becoming the first comic book adaptation to win a top prize (Outstanding Limited Series) and taking home 11 awards in total. Regina King (Best Actress), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Best Supporting Actor), and Cord Jefferson (Best Writing) used their acceptance speeches to channel the show's themes of racial violence into moving dedications and calls to action.

Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen in WandaVision (2020)

Viewers got a look at Marvel's next big vision

Remember TV commercials? The Emmys treated us to a lot of them, the biggest being the "WandaVision" trailer drop. The weird and welcome look at the upcoming Disney Plus series seems to indicate that a "Twilight Zone" experience is in store for our favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe couple. (And Kathryn Hahn might just be our favorite character on the show already?) No release date was announced, but you can check out the trailer here.

5
Mark Ruffalo at an event for The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards (2020)

Celebs made a convivial call to action

Many of the night's acceptance speeches featured impassioned reminders aimed at viewers at home, from persistent pleas to get out and vote in the upcoming U.S. election, to Mark Ruffalo’s declaration that "We have to come together with love for each other." Ruffalo took home his second career Emmy for his dual role in the limited series, "I Know This Much Is True."

6
Zendaya at an event for The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards (2020)

Surprising first-time wins

Zendaya became the youngest woman to win Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her work on HBO's "Euphoria," which clearly describes what she was feeling when she won. Runner up for biggest surprise of the night goes to first-time director Maria Schrader who beat out a category stacked with "Watchmen" directors to win Outstanding Director for Limited Series for Netflix's "Unorthodox."

7
Issa Rae at an event for The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards (2020)

Key creators reinforced representation

Interviews with creators and stars including Issa Rae, Lena Waithe, and America Ferrara peppered throughout the broadcast moved us with insightful commentary on representation in television, with the talented celebs stressing the importance of seeing ourselves reflected onscreen.

8
H.E.R. at an event for The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards (2020)

Nothing compared to H.E.R.

The streams for singer/songwriter H.E.R. should multiply after her moving version of Prince's "Nothing Compares to You" during the Emmys' In Memoriam segment reminded us of just how emotionally challenging 2020 has been.

9
Jesse Armstrong at an event for The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards (2020)

Set decoration took on a whole new meaning

We couldn’t help fixating on the contents of the nominees' living rooms in the background of the broadcast. What fun to get a quick but intimate peek into the personal spaces of the stars, whether they were kicked back on the couch in loungewear or wearing couture alongside their co-stars. Only a teensy bit of judgement on some questionable curtains and other décor choices (though we tend to love a pattern clash).

10
Tyler Perry at an event for The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards (2020)

Tyler Perry got personal

Tyler Perry accepted the much deserved Governors Award for his ongoing philanthropic initiatives and achievements in television with an emotional and personal speech about the importance of telling stories that honor one's history and heritage, and his commitment to diversity in front of and behind the camera.
