To avoid a nasty and prolonged divorce suit, she agreed to pay her third husband, Anthony B. Richmond, $4 million for sole custody of their son, Gaston Richmond, and daughter, Spencer Margaret Richmond.

In 1976, she became close to Farrah Fawcett when they worked on Los ángeles de Charlie (1976) since they had so much in common. They were both from Texas and both close to their parents. They remained close, even after Farrah left the show after just one year. They became even closer during the last six months of Farrah's life. Farrah had said to her, "I wouldn't have missed this time with you." After Farrah died in 2009, Jaclyn wanted to go to her funeral but couldn't go because her own mother was on her deathbed. She said that "in my heart of hearts, I knew Farrah understood because she was close to her mom.".

Smith's Los ángeles de Charlie (1976) co-star, Kate Jackson, became Smith's daughter (Spencer Margaret Richmond)'s godmother in 1985. In 1995, Jackson adopted a son, Charles Taylor Jackson, to whom Smith became a godmother.

Her favorite memory of Los ángeles de Charlie (1976) was when she and her co-stars Farrah Fawcett and Kate Jackson appeared on the cover of Time magazine on November 22, 1976. She and Farrah had considered it a prestigious honor when Time magazine asked, but Kate balked at it, since the producers wanted them to give up their lunch hour to do it. She had frequently stopped the producers from overworking them and saw this as one more way for them to encroach on their personal time. She locked herself in her trailer with Farrah and Jaclyn and told the producers that the door was stuck and won't open. The three friends had their lunch together for 45 minutes, when the producers struggled to open the door and begged them to pose for Time magazine, which they did in the last 15 minutes of their lunch hour. She is the only member of "Charlie's Angels" who has appeared on the cover of Time magazine twice, since she did a solo Time cover while she was pregnant with her son for the February 22, 1982 issue.

Occupied all three of the eponymous billing slots on Los ángeles de Charlie (1976). In the first season, Smith was billed third, after Kate Jackson and Farrah Fawcett. When Fawcett left the series, Smith was billed second, behind Jackson. When Jackson left after the series' third season, Smith took top billing above Cheryl Ladd and Jackson's replacement, Shelley Hack.

Her husband, Brad Allen is a pediatric heart surgeon in Chicago, Illinois.

1998: The French musical group Air released the single "Kelly Watch the Stars", which is about the Los ángeles de Charlie (1976) character "Kelly Garrett". In the music video, one of the band members is wearing a "Jaclyn Smith" shirt.
