Super Bowl Xlix on NBC, featuring the New England Patriots' history-making comeback from 10 points behind in the fourth quarter to defeat the Seattle Seahawks 28-24, is the most-watched television program in U.S. history and the highest-rated Super Bowl in 30 seasons, according to fast national data released today by The Nielsen Company. The game was seen by a record 114.4 million viewers (6:31-10:10 p.m. Et), topping by 2.2 million viewers last year's Super Bowl Xlviii on Fox and is the biggest audience to watch a television program in U.S. history. Here's what Mark Lazarus, Chairman, NBC Sports Group, had to say in a statement.

Last night's Patriots-Seahawks Super Bowl ranks among the most exciting sporting events in U.S. history. Super Bowl Xlix delivered for all of our partners, proving once again that the Super Bowl is the most dominant and consistent property on television."

Super Bowl XLIV (2010)
Super Bowl Xlvii falls short of viewership record
Super Bowl XLIV (2010)
Updated: Blame the blackout?

Sunday’s Super Bowl showdown between the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers game couldn’t score the ultimate ratings touchdown.

Super Bowl Xlvii delivered 108.4 million viewers. That makes last night’s game the third most-watched program in U.S. history, down 3 percent from last year’s record-holding championship telecast.

The viewership does not include the roughly 34 minutes of airtime where game play was suspended due to the Superdome’s much-mocked power outage. Ratings increased steadily throughout the telecast, then dipped during the partial stadium blackout. After play resumed, viewership climbed to new heights, peaking from 10:30-10:45 Pm,...

Jennifer Hudson to join Sandy Hook students for Super Bowl performance
Jennifer Hudson will join 26 students of Newtown, Conn.'s Sandy Hook Elementary School to sing "America the Beautiful" during the Super Bowl Xlvii pregame show.

The performance will be broadcast on CBS just before Alicia Keys takes the microphone to sing "The Star-Spangled Banner." USA Today reports the NFL is flying the students and their families to New Orleans, in a move that was initiated around one month after the Sandy Hook massacre.

Hudson famously performed the national anthem at Super Bowl Xliii in 2009, marking her first appearance following the shooting deaths of Jennifer's mother, brother, and nephew at the hands of her estranged brother-in-law.

The league has done much to support the victims of the Dec. 14 2012 mass shooting, including fundraisers by some teams and individual players, pre-game moments of silence, and messages written on helmets and cleats.

New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz wore the name of one of the young victims,...

Beyonce reportedly lip-syncs national anthem: Why we shouldn't care
Beyoncé
Here’s a truth bomb that will rock you to your very core: Sometimes, at big, important events, singers don’t actually sing.

An artist may choose to mouth along to a pre-recorded track during a “live” performance for any number of reasons. Maybe the weather is bad; maybe she simply isn’t feeling well. Whatever the excuse, though, lip-synching is about as ubiquitous as the common cold — especially if the singer in question happens to be performing “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Jennifer Hudson did it at Super Bowl Xliii in 2009. Whitney Houston also did it when delivering her definitive version...

The Most Heartwarming Football Game You'll Ever Read About
Mark Williams
In November 2008, a unique high school football game took place between Gainesville State School and Grapevine Faith in Grapevine, Texas.

Even though the event place three years, the story of the game is suddenly going viral on the Internet.

According to Espn magazine, the Gainesville State Tornadoes reached the Grapevine Faith field on a Friday night, and were greeted by an unusual scene. The Grapevine fans were cheering for them -- the rival team -- instead of their home team.

The fans then formed a 40-yard spirit line for the Tornadoes to run through with a banner painted with "Go Tornadoes" waiting for them at the end. Plus, half of Faith's cheerleaders were poised and ready to root for the opposing team.

"I never in my life thought I'd hear people cheering for us to hit their kids," Gainesville's Qb and middle linebacker, Isaiah told Espn. "I wouldn't expect another...

Super Bowl ratings final: Most watched show in history!
Jane Lynch, Lea Michele, Naya Rivera, Mark Salling, Matthew Morrison, Cory Monteith, Dianna Agron, Kevin McHale, Chris Colfer, Jenna Ushkowitz, Amber Riley, and Heather Elizabeth Morris in Glee (2009)
Update: In final Nielsen ratings, NBC’s Super Bowl Xlvi broke records to become the most-watched TV telecast of all time.

Sunday’s game delivered an incredible 111.3 million viewers, just barely edging out last year’s 111.0 million viewers. Among adults 18-49, the game garnered 40.5 rating. It marks the seventh straight year of Super Bowl audience increases.

NBC’s post-game presentation of the second season opener of The Voice (arguably the more important telecast for the network) garnered a likewise stunning 36.7 million viewers, becoming the highest-rated non-sports telecast in six years. The Voice is also up 47 in the demo vs. Fox...

Will Madonna Join Ranks Of Best Super Bowl Halftime Shows?
From the King of Pop to the Boss, the Super Bowl stage has played host to some memorable performances; MTV News looks back on the best.

By James Montgomery

Madonna

Photo: Martin Fraser/ Getty Images

On Sunday night, Madonna will join an exclusive club that includes the likes of Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Diana Ross and, uh, Up With People when she performs at halftime of Super Bowl Xlvi in Indianapolis.

Yes, you'd be hard-pressed to find a bigger stage than the big game — last year's Super Bowl was watched by some 111 million Americans — which is why the producers of the halftime festivities always recruit the biggest stars to perform (except for 1999, when Big Bad Voodoo Daddy inexplicably found their way into the proceedings). And Madonna most certainly fits that bill, which is why, while we're not quite sure what she'll bring to the Super Bowl stage — aside from...

The Best & Worst Super Bowl Halftime Moments
Nelly at an event for Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards '07 (2007)
We are all excited about Madonna's performance this Sunday, but Super Bowl halftime shows weren't always about popular recording artists. As the most-watched event in television history, it's hard to imagine the game without celebrities and pyrotechnics. The show has come a long way since college marching bands, so let's take a look at some of the great and most memorable Super Bowl halftime moments.

Super Bowl III: Florida A&M University:

Towards the end of the Civil rights movement, the 1969 halftime show was lead by the marching band of famed historically black college, Florida A&M University.

Super Bowl XVI: Up With the People:

Do you remember Up With the People? Well the NFL really liked this act! The international education organization featured a cast of about 100 students from 20 different countries. They performed at four different Super Bowls during the late 1970's and through the 80's.

Super Bowl Xxv: New Kids on the Block:

Step by Step, the halftime...

Why is Will Arnett in a Super Bowl Ad for Hulu?
Hulu is part of a not-so-secret Evil Plot to Destory the World. It was first revealed in 2009 in a commercial during Super Bowl Xliii featuring Alec Baldwin. The star of 30 Rock explains how the entertainment industry is populated by aliens and television is simply a tool by which those aliens are turning human brains into “mushymush” so they can “scoop them up with a melon baller and gobble them right on up.” Hulu is a fundamental component of the plot, allowing unassuming earthlings to consume television content anytime, anywhere. In addition to Baldwin, Seth MacFarlane, Eliza Dushku, and Denis Leary have all served as spokespeople for both Hulu and its overlords’ plans for world domination. This year, will Arnett of Arrested Development will take on the role of promoting the latest weapon in Hulu’s arsenal to the Super Bowl-watching public, Hulu Plus. Here’s the teaser: It’s good,...

Hulu.com: The Top 5 Super Bowl Lead-Out Shows Ever
Seth Green, Mila Kunis, Alex Borstein, and Seth MacFarlane in Padre de familia (1999)
Imagine a dreamworld where a magic potion can get 39 million people to unite in front of their televisions and watch Undercover Boss all at the same time. This potion can also get 27 million people to watch two hours of Airwolf in a row.

What if I told you that magic potion actually exists? It's called a Super Bowl lead-out show, and it's used once a year, every year, and it works on everything except The John Larroquette Show.

The show after the Super Bowl pulls in "1984"-esque, drone-like consumer numbers. Fifty-three million people watched a truly weird episode of Friends after the Super Bowl one year because, mostly, it was after the Super Bowl. It was part of the highest grossing advertising block of TV ever.

This year's golden child is The Voice, NBC's singing and Christina Aguilera cleavage showcase. Season one did well. Season two has already had enough...

Super Bowl Predictions From Cobra Starship
Since they're playing a pre-Super Bowl bash, we had the Cobras give us their picks for the big game. For better or worse.

By James Montgomery

MTV News' James Montgomery and Cobra Starship's Gabe Saporta and Ryland Blackinton

On the surface — or, really, any level — Cobra Starship don't appear to be "sports guys" (and girl). Which is why it's sort of strange to hear them discuss this Sunday's Super Bowl Xlvi ... and even stranger to hear them say they're heading to the host city (Indianapolis) to play the big game.

"Yeah, I will be on the New England Patriots. It's super-scary; I lost a bet and now I have to put on the gear and I'm going to get the sh-- kicked out of me, and it's not cool," guitarist Ryland Blackinton deadpanned. "No, we're playing a Super Bowl party the night before with Lmfao, Lupe Fiasco and Gym Class Heroes.

Jennifer Hudson Credits Dead Brother for Super Bowl Comeback Performance

Jennifer Hudson surprised many when, just months after a family tragedy that saw her mother, brother and nephew murdered, she returned to the stage to sing the Star-Spangled Banner at Super Bowl Xliii. NFL Stars Film PSAs To Raise Awareness Of African Drought
NFL superstar wide receivers Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald are teaming up once again on a mission to bring attention to the ongoing drought in East Africa.

Boldin and Fitzgerald call on football fans and others to support efforts to bring critically needed food and water to people in Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya, and have released a public service announcement to raise awareness and funds for the region. The former teammates are both perennial Pro Bowl favorites and played together in Super Bowl Xliii. Both players are also well-known contributors to communities in need. They are exemplary role models on and off the field. This effort represents the first time the two stars have teamed up publicly to support a cause.

“This season the rains failed in many areas, causing the worst drought in 60 years,” said Boldin, who joined the Baltimore Ravens in 2010 after seven seasons with the Arizona Cardinals.

Will the Super Bowl score an Emmy touchdown?
Super Bowl XLIII (2009)
Sunday's Super Bowl was one of highest-rated in the 45-year history of the famed football franchise. Fox Sports execs now have to hope that Sports Emmy voters have long memories as it won't be eligible to contend for these kudos till next year. Rather, it will be Super Bowl Xliv -- last year's contest that saw the New Orleans Saints defeat the Indianapolis Colts 31 to 17 -- which will be in the hunt when nominations for the 32nd annual Sports Emmys are announced in the coming weeks. At last year's Sports Emmys, Super Bowl Xliii -- the 2009 game in which the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Arizona Cardinals 27-13 -- won Best Live Sports Special for NBC. Fox aired the 2008 game in which the New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots 17-14. That Super Bowl lost the top prize to NBC's coverage of the 108th U.S. Open although it did win Best Opening/Tease.

Watch All The Super Bowl Movie Commercials In One Post
There’s a good number of Super Bowl trailers expected during today’s big game between the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburg Steelers. Following Apple’s 1984 commercial introducing the Macintosh computer, directed by Ridley Scott, the broadcast of the Super Bowl became the premier showcase for high concept and expensive commercials. Famous commercial campaigns include the Budweiser “Bud Bowl” campaign and the 1999 and 2000 dot-com ads. Prices have increased every year, with advertisers paying as much as $3 million for a thirty-second spot during Super Bowl Xliii in 2009. Considering the Super Bowl has an annual global audience of around one billion people, I am assuming most people will have already seen most, if not all of these ads. With that said I don’t feel the need to write anymore. You can watch all the ads below. Enjoy!

The Black Eyed Peas Have The Best Super Bowl Halftime Shows In History To Live Up To
This weekend is going to be a massive one for the worlds of music, television and sports. The Super Bowl is finally here, and the fact that the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers will be squaring off against one another to determine who is this year's NFL champion is only about the fifth-most important thing happening over the next few days. In addition to the game, there will be the headline-grabbing advertisements (including a number of movie trailer premieres and appearances by both Justin Bieber and Eminem), the new episode of "Glee" that will follow the big game (which features the much-talked-about "Thriller" sequence), the national anthem care of Christina Aguilera (which bodes well for the Steelers) and the fact that this could be the most-watched American television broadcast in history (besting last year's Super Bowl, which drew 106.5 million viewers).

Crossover Alert: 'The Office' and 'Glee'
Although they are from two different networks but NBC's "The Office" and Fox's "Glee" are on mutual term. The popular TV series will do sort of a crossover later this season when the staff of Dunder Mifflin gather to watch an episode of "Glee".

It looks like it won't be a small bit like when the staff watched a pirated movie starring Jack Black in the episode airing after Super Bowl Xliii. According to Entertainment Weekly, the "entire upcoming episode", which air date is still unknown, is dedicated to "getting together to watch" the musical show. However, no cast from "Glee" would actually be present at the office.

This Thursday, October 7, "The Office" will air an Andy-centric episode called "Andy's Play". Andy invites the entire office to his community theater production of "Sweeney Todd" in hopes that Erin will attend. Michael tries to put his jealousy aside and enjoy the...

Uncommon Indicator: Super Bowl Ad Spending
There has been a bit of hand wringing of late over the fact that 30-second television spots during this year's Super Bowl broadcast on Feb. 7 on CBS are going for only around $2.75 million. Last year, see, during Super Bowl Xliii, those ads cost $3 million. Before you glance up expecting to see a piece of sky shrieking down upon you, let's look a little closer at the numbers.

For one thing, as The New York Times notes today, CBS has said that it has almost sold out all of the available ad time, which would mean it has done so much earlier than NBC did for last year's game. You could argue that this is due to the shaving of $250, 000 off the price tag, or you could see that as a sign of enthusiasm on the part of the ad buyers. Similarly, while many business behemoths--including FedEx, General Motors, and Pepsi--are taking a pass this year,...

TruTV gets into Super Bowl ad mix
Turner Broadcasting System has snapped up one of CBS' final remaining Super Bowl spots, buying a 30-second slice of time on the network's Feb. 7 broadcast.

The cable programmer is positioning the buy as a showcase for truTV, the network formerly known as Court TV. The truTV spot will air late in the second quarter of the game, immediately before the two-minute warning.

Although Turner declined to confirm what it has paid for the high-profile positioning, the average cost of a 30-second avail in Super Bowl Xliv is $2.5 million-$2.8 million.

The network's Super Bowl promo will highlight the new series "NFL Full Contact," which bows the night after the big game at 10 p.m. Est. Produced by NFL Films, the one-hour series gives viewers a seat on the 50-yard line as the league preps for some of the season's marquee events.

2009 TV Year in Review
You know, for all the bitching we do, 2009 was a pretty fantastic TV year. Sure, it threw up the "Jersey Shore" (bringing back severe childhood nightmares for some of us), stuffed more Heidi and Spencer down our throats, and tried to convince us that "Flash Forward" was something other than dumbed-down science fiction at its worst. But every year has its filth and dregs, and if you were willing to take a deep breath and dive into the murky sludge, there were actually quite a few good pearls waiting for you at the bottom.

Take "Lost," for example. While there's some minority dissent, most would agree that 2009 started off with the show delivering a strong penultimate season, perhaps its best season yet. It was an engrossing arc of television, doing service to both the characters and the overarching mythology, all while quietly turning unsuspecting TV viewers into fans of a...

Veteran football broadcaster John Madden, the longtime face and voice of NFL football coverage, is retiring.

"It's time," Madden said in a statement. "I'm 73 years old. My 50th wedding anniversary is this fall. I have two great sons and their families and my five grandchildren are at an age now when they know when I'm home and, more importantly, when I'm not."

During the course of a 30-year career, the former Oakland Raiders coach has served as an analyst on all four the four major broadcast networks, winning 18 Emmy Awards. He most recently called the games for NBC on "Sunday Night Football," where he's worked since 2006.

NBC Sports chairman Dick Ebersol said Cris Collinsworth has been named Madden's successor in the NBC broadcast booth and sought to reassure fans that the decision was entirely up to Madden. Ebersol said Madden turned down an offer to work fewer games next season.

Jennifer Hudson Already Set Wedding Date, Won't Tell Anybody
Jennifer Hudson has set a wedding date, the former "American Idol" finalist herself has revealed. Asked by Ryan Seacrest during a pre-taped performance for a future episode of the singing competition if she has set a wedding date with fiance David Otunga, Jennifer replied, "Yeah, but it's a secret. I can't tell anybody."

Jennifer Hudson, who besides singing also has an acting career, got engaged to actor boyfriend David Otunga during her 27th birthday in September 2008. He reportedly presented her with a Neil Lane diamond ring when proposing. Planning to wed in the same year, Jennifer and David were forced to postpone their big day after Jennifer's mother, brother, and nephew were murdered back in October 2008.

Avoiding the media spotlight following the tragic incident, Jennifer made her first public performance, singing "Star-Spangled Banner", at Super Bowl Xliii pre-game party on February 1. Since that time she has made several other public performances at numerous events.

Bruce Springsteen Shows Taylor Swift Who's Boss
There's a reason they call him the Boss. Bruce Springsteen just accomplished what eight weeks of challengers failed to do, namely knock out Taylor Swift from atop the Billboard 200. The Boss took the No. 1 spot as Working on a Dream worked up 224,000 in sales for the week ended Sunday, per Nielsen SoundScan. With his ninth chart-topper, Springsteen is tied with the Rolling Stones for the fourth most No. 1 albums of all time. The Beatles have the most with 19, followed by Elvis Presley and Jay-z, both with 10. The Boss' album clearly got a boost from Super Bowl Xliii hype. The Jersey rocker played an electrifying half-time set, which will have a further impact on next week's sales...

Will Super Bowl win with Emmy voters?
Super Bowl Xliii was the most watched sporting event in television history with almost 100 million viewers. NBC execs now have to hope that a few of those record numbers have long memories as none of the all-day coverage of the big game is eligible to compete at the Sports Emmys till next year.

When the nominations are announced next month for the 30th anniversary edition of the Sports Emmys, it will be Super Bowl Xlii that contends. Fox carried that 2008 game in which the New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots 17-14.

At last April's Sports Emmys awardfest, it was the Super Bowl from February 2007 which competed for best live sports special. The CBS coverage of that game — the Indianapolis Colts beat the Chicago Bears 29 to 17 — lost to the Fox coverage of the 2007 Fiesta Bowl in which Boise State beat Oklahoma in overtime 43-42. CBS also earned two nods...

Jennifer Hudson Lip-Syncing National Anthem During Super Bowl Xliii
Jennifer Hudson is confirmed to have lip-synced "Star-Spangled Banner" during her performance at Super Bowl Xliii pre-game party on February 1. Breaking the news is the show's producer Ricky Minor, who tells The Associated Press that she sang to the pre-recorded track at his request.

"That's the right way to do it," Minor explains concerning Jennifer's live appearance. "There's too many variables to go live. I would never recommend any artist go live, because the slightest glitch would devastate the performance."

"This was such an important performance, because it's the first time everyone has seen Jennifer," he furthermore states. "She's in such a great place, with such great spirits, and time can heal her wounds. She's on fire right now and totally grounded."

Claiming that Jennifer was very well prepared, Minor says she made her performance personal. "She's from the church. So we wanted to give it a gospel feel, use a little organ,...

Hudson Lip-Synced Super Bowl Performance
Jennifer Hudson at an event for Dreamgirls (2006)
Jennifer Hudson lip-synced the U.S. national anthem at Super Bowl XLIII on Sunday after producers insisted she sing to a prerecorded track to avoid a potentially disastrous performance. Hudson wowed millions of American TV viewers with her comeback, broadcast from Tampa, Florida - her first public appearance since her mother, brother and nephew were shot dead in October.

And the show's producer, Ricky Minor, urged Hudson to sing accompanied by the recording.

He tells Usmagazine.com, "This was such an important performance, because it's the first time everyone has seen Jennifer. But she's in such a great place, with such great spirits, and time can heal her wounds. She's on fire right now and totally grounded.

"That's the right way to do it. There's too many variables to go live. I would never recommend any artist go live, because the slightest glitch would devastate the performance."

When Dreamgirls star Hudson stepped off the stage, Minor was the first to congratulate her success: "I told her, 'Touchdown!' She's just getting so much love."

Hudson's mother Darnell Donerson and brother Jason Hudson, 29, were shot dead in Donerson's Chicago, Illinois home. The body of the Oscar-winner's seven year old nephew, Julian, was found in a car elsewhere in the city three days later.

William Balfour, the estranged husband of Hudson's sister Julia, has pleaded not guilty to charges of first degree murder and home invasion.

Hudson vs. Houston: The Super Bowl Star-Spangled Showdown
At Sunday's Super Bowl Xliii in Tampa, Jennifer Hudson made her big return to the stage with a rousing rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner". Hudson's brave performance following her family tragedy was reminiscent of Whitney Houston's powerful performance during the Persian Gulf War in 1991 for Super Bowl Xxv, also in Tampa. Houston, backed by an orchestra and donning a patriotic sweat suit and matching athletic headband, gave one of the most iconic interpretations of the National Anthem in history. But does Hudson's more subdued (she was backed by a recording) and fashionable (she wore skinny jeans and a nautical...

Jennifer Hudson - National Anthem
After tragically losing her mother and brother in October, Jennifer Hudson stood tall and proud, pouring her heart out into every lyric of the National Anthem at Super Bowl Xliii. Hudson was welcomed on field with an abundance of cheers, screams of "I Love You" and the love and support of all those watching at home. We became fans of Hudson when she was a contestant on American Idol but we became admirers of her work when she portrayed Effie White in Dreamgirls. Jennifer Hudson stars alongside Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles, Eddie Murphy and Danny Glover in Dreamgirls, the story loosely based on the lives of the true soul singers of yesteryear. Portraying the tempered singer landed Hudson the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress beating out Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada), Rinko Kikuchi and Adriana Barraza (Babel), and Cat Blanchett (Notes on a Scandal). Tearfully accepting her award, Hudson said,...

Springsteen Rocks The Super Bowl
Bruce Springsteen and Jennifer Hudson wowed Super Bowl XLIII on Sunday as the Pittsburgh Steelers were crowned American football champions in Tampa, Florida. Hudson made her public comeback after the triple murder of her mother, brother and nephew in October forced her into hiding.

The Oscar winner kicked off the big game with an emotional but flawless rendition of the U.S. National Anthem, and Springsteen and The E Street Band took over at half-time with a 12-minute medley of past and present hits.

Kicking off his first Super Bowl appearance, The Boss urged fans watching the game at home to "step back from the guacamole dip, I want you to put the chicken fingers down."

He then performed hits including Glory Days and Born To Run, and new track Working on A Dream - backed by a 42-piece gospel choir - before ending the show by screaming, "I'm going to Disneyland" - the chant traditionally associated with the Super Bowl-winning quarterback.

Springsteen welcomed Nils Lofgren back to the E Street Band line-up - the guitarist took a hiatus in 2008 after undergoing hip surgery.

Among the celebrities in the crowd at Tampa's Raymond James Stadium were heroic Us Airways Flight 1549 pilot Chesley B. Sullenberger and his crew, and Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr., who ironically played a fictional member of the Arizona Cardinals - the Super Bowl's losing team - in the film Jerry Maguire.

Shooting for the video has reportedly been completed, taking place in Los Angeles earlier this week.

Rumor on Jennifer Hudson filming "If This Isn't Love" has been circulating in the media since December 2008. At that time, she reportedly canceled the video shoot because she was not ready to get back to work after the murders of her family.
