I was thinking of writing that I detest Phoebe Waller-Bridge over and over until I reach 600 words. She really is that dreadful. However, the film is entertaining. It has all the things we like-action, dry wit, history and mysticism, battling the Nazis, and the belief that Indy is always one step ahead of the danger all baddies all around him. Then there's Helena or "Wombat," the crooked, annoying, petulant, insufferable Phoebe Waller-Bridge whom you may know from the equally dreadful Fleabag. Her character steals the show with her immature commentary. I must confess I don't care much for Mads Mikkelsen and his now stereotypical dark characters.
All of the reviews here that complain of the short-shrift given to the intricacies of plot twists, the character development, and the incredible license taken with the original story are just. All of the reviews that speak of a beautiful story with sumptuous feast of art, architecture, and culture also are just. Set aside the incredible story written by Dumas to enjoy this delicious film. All the elements are there-the intrigue of the elite and their selfish, evil interests, the vengefulness of the count (and the doubts of Edmond) as he plots and exacts his revenge, and the discomfort genuinely expressed by Mercédès as she meets a seeming ghost. Though nothing can beat the book, It's really a beautiful story.
