  • ASC was founded in 1919 for the main purposes of advancing the art and craft of cinematography and to provide a forum where cinematographers could share their experiences and ideas. Membership is international and by invitation based on the individual's body of narrative filmwork. There are currently 275 active members who trace their roots to some 20 countries. There are also 140 associate members in ancillary sectors of the motion picture industry that support the art and craft of filmmaking. (as of early 2005)
  • The awards were inaugurated in 1987.

ASC Heritage Award
  • The ASC Heritage award was inaugurated in 1999 and is dedicated annually to the memory of a different cinematographer. The purpose of the award is to inspire and encourage talented young filmmakers to believe in themselves and to pursue their dreams.
