  • The association passed a resolution against the altering of films, encompassing the color-tinting of classic black-and-white films, editing for television and the process of panning and scanning.

  • For the first time in the 25-year history of the association the best picture category went to a foreign-language film.

  • The awards are dedicated to the memory of the late Robert Altman, Michelangelo Antonioni, Ingmar Bergman, Ousmane Sembene and Edward Yang.
