Netflix and BBC Studios‘ BBC Studios Audio unit have unveiled the commission of comedy podcast The Big Pitch With Jimmy Carr. It will be co-produced by Netflix Podcasts and BBC Studios Audio and be available for audiences globally from today, Wednesday, May 28.

“There are over 27,000 different Netflix sub-categories. And they can get pretty niche. From ‘Steamy Crime Movies from the 1970s’ to ‘Australian Dysfunctional Family Comedies Starring A Strong Female Lead,’ the genres get really, really niche,” the partners quipped in a Wednesday announcement. “The Big Pitch With Jimmy Carr sees a parade of much-loved comedians pitch movie ideas to Jimmy, our sceptical host, which fit Netflix’s most obscure sub-genres. B.C.’s film, which we first highlighted as part of the National Film and Television School’s Graduate Showcase, is an excellent exercise in economical craftsmanship and comedy timing. Led by comedian and co-writer Abi Tedder, it skilfully mixes an unsettling claustrophobic feel with moments of pure hilarity. As you can tell, it’s a short we’re big fans of, both because it’s a clever story and also because it was created with minimal means. Right in the middle of his latest Netflix special, comedian Phil Wang starts talking about his memory. He says that he doesn’t have a good memory. He goes on to elaborate on that point, but he fails to remember what he was going to say. That’s a great joke right there. So subtle, that you marvel at it. Wang extends it further by giving an example of a good memory of someone he knows. He compares it to a folder, while he describes his own as mist. It’s still so very funny, although I wish he had cut it a little bit short.

I have no such complaints against Wang’s set. Rarely in a one-hour comedy special, every single joke lands right. Wang doesn’t tell one bad joke. He does play a simple trick, though. He doesn’t let the good ones end and keeps carrying them around.

Exclusive: Check out this exclusive clip of British comedian Phil Wang’s second Netflix special, which launches September 3.

Wang In There, Baby! comes three years after the comedian’s debut for the streamer, Philly Philly Wang Wang, which put him on the map in the States. He has since appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers and chatted with David Letterman for his Netflix show.

Wang In There, Baby! is about “being British, being Asian, octopuses, America and the trappings of minor fame,” its creator has said. It was taped at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare’s Globe in London, having been toured around the globe for the past couple of years including in the U.S. and a twice-extended 64-date tour in Wang’s home country.

In the clip, which you can watch above, Wang delivers a laugh-out-loud gag on “those people who don’t like doing ‘touristy’ things when abroad.

Dial F For Football is a new podcast starring Lolly Adefope, Fergus Craig, Jessica Fostekew and Helen Cripps. Exclusive: Lolly Adefope (Saltburn) has signed on alongside Fergus Craig, Jessica Fostekew, and Helen Cripps to lead the scripted podcast Dial F For Football written by comedian Rhys James and Mark G Smith for Keep It Light Media (Parenting Hell with Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe and Wolf & Owl with Romesh Ranganathan and Tom Davis).

BBC Radio 4 has today launched Jokes, a new comedy podcast feed that brings together top picks from the station’s original comedy in one place. Available to subscribe on BBC Sounds and RSS, Jokes will combine brand new series with highlights from the archive, providing comedy fans with an easy way to find the latest content from their favourite comedians.

First up in the feed will be Nora Meadows’ Week of Wellness, a new sitcom starring Katy Wix as a therapist trying to help her clients (and herself) find wellness. This series is a joint commission between BBC Comedy and Radio 4 following a non-broadcast pilot last year.

Comedian Harry Deansway is suing Steve Coogan’s production company Baby Cow over a comedy series called “Live at the Moth Club,” which he claims rips off his YouTube show “Shambles.”

In his filing, Deansway, whose real name is Joshua Rinkoff, describes “Shambles” as a sitcom “centered around a live comedy night” at a run-down club struggling to make ends meet. The show blends fact and fiction by combining a sitcom set behind the scenes of the club with real comedy performances in front of a live audience.

“Shambles,” which featured appearances from well-known comedians including Aisling Bea and Dan Schreiber, was released on YouTube in 2013 as a six-part series, followed by a second season in 2015.

Taskmaster seems to be one of those magically perfect TV shows, but of course the root of its genius isn’t magic at all: it’s a whip-smart combination of Alex Horne’s original format, the comedic force of nature that is Greg Davies in the role of the Taskmaster, and relentlessly good casting.

At the beginning of every Taskmaster series, the contestants know that they can only wear one outfit for all the task filming, for continuity purposes. So what would you pick? Stepping into the unknown, with all manner of physical and mental trials and tribulations ahead, the sensible bet would be… well, something sensible.

And yet, series after series, we see contestants don the most ridiculous getup to take them through their Taskmaster journeys, including a dressing gown, a safari suit, and an Evil Knievel helmet. And series 14 is no different: three of the contestants – Munya Chawawa, Fern Brady and Dara O’Briain – are sporting particularly impressive themed jumpsuits.

Amy Schumer, James Acaster, Jimmy O. Yang and many other comedians have joined the lineup of Just for Laughs Montreal’s 40th anniversary festival. The news comes ahead of the launch for tickets of the event, which goes live Wednesday.

Schumer, Acaster, Yang, Jimmy Carr, Dara Ó Briain, Debra Digiovanni, Jacqueline Novak, Katherine Ryan, Maria Bamford, Fortune Feimster will all perform concert shows over the course of the almost three-week long Canadian comedy festival. In addition, Rick Mercer will host a special concert spotlighting Canadian comics. They join previously announced performers, who include John Mulaney and Hasan Minhaj.

Just for Laughs also announced a special gala celebrating the festival’s 40th anniversary, as well as several club shows, a podcast reading for Hesseltine and Rayna Greenberg’s comedy show “Girls Gotta Eat” and programming for the Off-jfl spin-off festival.

Sean Lock, the UK TV personality known for his deadpan style and appearances on panel shows such as 8 Out of 10 Cats, has died at the age of 58.

Lock had been battling cancer for some time and died at home surrounded by his family, his agent confirmed to the Guardian.

Breaking into TV in the early 1990s with a role on Rob Newman and David Baddiel’s Newman And Baddiel In Pieces, Lock had various behind and in front of the camera roles on the small screen. He also had his own BBC Radio 4 show 15 Minutes of Misery, which later became the TV series 15 Storeys High, which he wrote and acted in.

BritBox’s reboot of British satirical puppet show Spitting Image has been renewed for a second season just days after it premiered the first episode of Season 1 online.

The Avalon-produced caricature comedy will be back in fall 2021 after BritBox said its first series premiere helped boost new subscribers ten-fold compared to its average daily sign-up rate.

Reemah Sakaan, group director of ITV SVOD and chief creative and brand officer of BritBox, said: “The fantastic response to Spitting Image just goes to show how much the world needs public service satire. Not only can subscribers look forward to another 9 weeks of anarchy but also now another series in 2021.”

The renewal comes just hours after executive producer Jon Thoday revealed that NBC backed out as Spitting Image’s U.S. broadcast partner just weeks before the premiere. The Avalon founder said there was “too much nervousness” about its satirical content among NBC executives.
