Netflix, BBC Studios Team on Comedy Podcast ‘The Big Pitch With Jimmy Carr’
Image
Netflix and BBC Studios‘ BBC Studios Audio unit have unveiled the commission of comedy podcast The Big Pitch With Jimmy Carr. It will be co-produced by Netflix Podcasts and BBC Studios Audio and be available for audiences globally from today, Wednesday, May 28.

“There are over 27,000 different Netflix sub-categories. And they can get pretty niche. From ‘Steamy Crime Movies from the 1970s’ to ‘Australian Dysfunctional Family Comedies Starring A Strong Female Lead,’ the genres get really, really niche,” the partners quipped in a Wednesday announcement. “The Big Pitch With Jimmy Carr sees a parade of much-loved comedians pitch movie ideas to Jimmy, our sceptical host, which fit Netflix’s most obscure sub-genres. Guests are challenged to figure out the plot and cast under the pressure of Jimmy’s withering gaze. At the end of the pitch, Jimmy decides whether to move to greenlight or condemn our guests and their dubious ideas to development hell.

A Darkly Obsessed Woman Contemplates the End of Everything in Matthew B.C.’s Comedy Short ‘Death!’
Image
Death is coming for us all. The bleak yet truthful sentiment of that sentence is the propulsive force that drives the mysterious monologuing protagonist of Matthew B.C.’s darkly comic short Death!. B.C.’s film, which we first highlighted as part of the National Film and Television School’s Graduate Showcase, is an excellent exercise in economical craftsmanship and comedy timing. Led by comedian and co-writer Abi Tedder, it skilfully mixes an unsettling claustrophobic feel with moments of pure hilarity. As you can tell, it’s a short we’re big fans of, both because it’s a clever story and also because it was created with minimal means. Dn caught up with B.C. to learn more about the process of making Death!, collaborating with Tedder on the script and her performance, and the difficult challenge of manifesting their grand ideas on a shoestring budget.

What sparked the concept for Death!

Netflix Comedy Incoming & Dark Docuseries Worst Ex Ever Take the #1 Spots
Image
A new comedy movie and a dark docuseries have taken over the top spots on Netflix's viewership leaderboard. The comedy Incoming and the documentary series Worst Ex Ever have found huge success on the streaming platform, topping the Netflix titles for this week. Netflix's latest comedy, Incoming, stars Ramon Reed, Raphael Alejandro, Mason Thames, Bobby Cannavale, Kaitlin Olson, Scott MacArthur and Isabella Ferreira, and follows four boys as they navigate their first week of freshman year in high school. Specifically, getting ready for their first high school party, which they are terrified of attending. After its first full week on the platform, Incoming has reached the tippy top with 16.9 million views, up 71% from its debut weekend.

Looking beyond Incoming, Halle Berry and Mark Wahlbergs spy action thriller The Union stuck around on the English-language film list for another week, falling to second place after its big debut week. It garnered 16.8 million views,...

‘Phil Wang: Wang In There, Baby!’ Netflix Review: British-Asian Comedian’s Stand-up Is Fantastically Funny
Image
Right in the middle of his latest Netflix special, comedian Phil Wang starts talking about his memory. He says that he doesn’t have a good memory. He goes on to elaborate on that point, but he fails to remember what he was going to say. That’s a great joke right there. So subtle, that you marvel at it. Wang extends it further by giving an example of a good memory of someone he knows. He compares it to a folder, while he describes his own as mist. It’s still so very funny, although I wish he had cut it a little bit short.

I have no such complaints against Wang’s set. Rarely in a one-hour comedy special, every single joke lands right. Wang doesn’t tell one bad joke. He does play a simple trick, though. He doesn’t let the good ones end and keeps carrying them around.

A big-screen adaptation of Scott Westerfeld’s dystopian sci-fi novel Uglies; Emily in Paris becoming Emily in Rome; Jeremy Saulnier’s latest genre piece; the latest installment of Ryan Murphy’s grisly crime anthology series; Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen and Natasha Lyonne playing sisters in a critically acclaimed family drama; and rom-com series toplined by the charming coupling of Kristen Bell and Adam Brody are some of the highlights among the new films and series hitting Netflix in September.

Buzzy filmmaker Jeremy Saulnier releases his latest feature, Rebel Ridge, on Netflix on Sept. 6. The action film stars up-and-coming Brit actor Aaron Pierre as a man who comes to a small town to bail out his cousin, but has his money seized by a corrupt local police force led by Chief Sandy Burnne (Don Johnson). He is then forced to use his skills to retrieve the money and exact revenge. Saulnier...

Pointless: Meet 2024’s New Guest Hosts
Image
In 2021, Pointless fans had to come to terms with the fact that change is the only constant in this crazy, crazy world when the show’s co-creator and co-host Richard Osman left to pursue other career opportunities such as being an incredibly successful crime novelist, and taking the main seat on his own game show Richard Osman’s House of Games.

Good for Richard Osman, it all seems to be very going well for him. But for Pointless?

Taking its cue from satirical current affairs show Have I Got News For You?, which settled on a revolving carousel of guest hosts when its regular host Angus Deayton was forced to step down instead of plumping for a permanent chair, Pointless has welcomed a series of co-hosts in the past couple of years.

First up were Sally Lindsay, Stephen Mangan, Lauren Laverne, Alex Brooker, Konnie Huq and Ed Gamble. Next came Andi Oliver,...

‘Wonka’ Review

Stars: Timothée Chalamet, Hugh Grant, Tom Davis, Olivia Colman, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Freya Parker, Keegan-Michael Key, Colin O’Brien, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Charlotte Ritchie, Phil Wang | Written by Paul King, Simon Farnaby | Directed by Paul King

Paul King has worked some of his Paddington heart and magic to create a world of pure imagination. With a story that feels closer to the hearts and souls of a newer generation, than to the ones that grew up watching Gene Wilder, Wonka is for a new age to enjoy some sweet treats.

When it was announced Paul King would be at the helm of the Wonka origin story, I breathed a sigh of relief. If there is anyone working in Hollywood today who understands how to tell a wonderfully heartwarming tale while showing brilliant cinematic language, it’s Paul King. Through his previous two films (Paddington and Paddington 2...

Taskmaster’s Best Tasks Ranked from Merely Very Funny to Totally Life-Changing
Image
What’s your favourite Taskmaster task? Did it result in a delicious failure or a triumphant win? Was it a crafty solution from a cunning mind, or a bonkers, impractical response that could only have come from the brain of John Kearns?

We asked our writers to nominate their favourites, in order (and not including Prize Tasks because that’s already been covered here), and collated the results into the Top 50 below. With 15 series proper, two Champion of Champions specials, and multiple New Year’s Treat episodes, there were approximately 89,000 tasks to choose from, hence a nice, neat 50.

If you’re at all concerned about the scientific robustness of our approach, rest assured that Google Sheets formulas were used in the creation of this list, resulting in an entirely accurate ranking order that cannot be questioned. Well alright, you can question it.

So, what are the best Taskmaster tasks of all time?...

Comedian Files Copyright Lawsuit Over Stand-Up Series ‘Live at the Moth Club’
Image
Comedian Harry Deansway is suing Steve Coogan’s production company Baby Cow over a comedy series called “Live at the Moth Club,” which he claims rips off his YouTube show “Shambles.”

In his filing, Deansway, whose real name is Joshua Rinkoff, describes “Shambles” as a sitcom “centered around a live comedy night” at a run-down club struggling to make ends meet. The show blends fact and fiction by combining a sitcom set behind the scenes of the club with real comedy performances in front of a live audience.

“Shambles,” which featured appearances from well-known comedians including Aisling Bea and Dan Schreiber, was released on YouTube in 2013 as a six-part series, followed by a second season in 2015.

Deansway has accused Baby Cow of copying the series with a show called “Live at the Moth Club,” which aired on UKTV last December. According to the comedian, “Live at the Moth Club,” which stars Jamie Demetriou,...

The Best TV Shows For Taskmaster Fans
Image
Taskmaster seems to be one of those magically perfect TV shows, but of course the root of its genius isn’t magic at all: it’s a whip-smart combination of Alex Horne’s original format, the comedic force of nature that is Greg Davies in the role of the Taskmaster, and relentlessly good casting.

As we’ve said before, there’s no such thing as a bad series of Taskmaster, and we’re sure Series 15 will be no different, but until it arrives, what should fans fill their time watching?

Take a look at these similarly delightful TV shows, including plenty featuring previous Taskmaster series alumni:

Man Down (Channel 4)

Starring the Taskmaster himself Greg Davies, this Channel 4 sitcom centres on his character Dan, a frankly terrible schoolteacher who is having an infinitely amusing midlife crisis. As you can see from the clip above, it’ll please fans of Davies’ scathing takedowns,...

Taskmaster: Does Wearing a Special Outfit Help Contestants Win?
Greg Davies and Alex Horne in Taskmaster (2015)
At the beginning of every Taskmaster series, the contestants know that they can only wear one outfit for all the task filming, for continuity purposes. So what would you pick? Stepping into the unknown, with all manner of physical and mental trials and tribulations ahead, the sensible bet would be… well, something sensible.

And yet, series after series, we see contestants don the most ridiculous getup to take them through their Taskmaster journeys, including a dressing gown, a safari suit, and an Evil Knievel helmet. And series 14 is no different: three of the contestants – Munya Chawawa, Fern Brady and Dara O’Briain – are sporting particularly impressive themed jumpsuits.

The question is: does a special outfit give contestants special powers? The edge over the competition, even? Let’s crunch the numbers.

Tim Key: 1980s-style tracksuit and headband over a shirt and tie (Series 1) Series rank: fourth

Okay, so we’re off to a bad start.

We’re deep into the dog days of summer, but Netflix’s list of new releases for August 2021 feels like fall.

That is to say that Netflix has some really good library TV titles this month that harken back to the glory days of the fall TV network calendar. August 1 sees the arrival of two of the best NBC shows of all time: Tina Fey comedy 30 Rock, and life-affirming (American) football drama Friday Night Lights. If you’ve not seen either, catch up with them both. That’s an order.

‘Spitting Image’ Renewed For A Second Season By BritBox
Image
BritBox’s reboot of British satirical puppet show Spitting Image has been renewed for a second season just days after it premiered the first episode of Season 1 online.

The Avalon-produced caricature comedy will be back in fall 2021 after BritBox said its first series premiere helped boost new subscribers ten-fold compared to its average daily sign-up rate.

Reemah Sakaan, group director of ITV SVOD and chief creative and brand officer of BritBox, said: “The fantastic response to Spitting Image just goes to show how much the world needs public service satire. Not only can subscribers look forward to another 9 weeks of anarchy but also now another series in 2021.”

The renewal comes just hours after executive producer Jon Thoday revealed that NBC backed out as Spitting Image’s U.S. broadcast partner just weeks before the premiere. The Avalon founder said there was “too much nervousness” about its satirical content among NBC executives.
