Whitney | Premieres in U.S. theaters Friday, July 6
Nearly six years after her death, Whitney Houston's life continues to fascinate, not only because her music persists as the soundtrack of a generation but also because so much intrigue remains about the discrepancy between the pop star's public and private lives. This documentary, which premiered this spring at Cannes, traces Houston's upbringing in New Jersey and her path to stardom, attempting to make sense of the frequently uncontrollable forces that pushed and pulled her. Director Kevin Macdonald secured the participation of the singer's family and Clive Davis, who provide, as seen from the poignant trailer, particular points of view about how things ended up as they did and who bears responsibility for some of the more anguished chapters of her life. I have no doubt this movie will raise more questions than resolve them. — Bret
