9 Movie and TV Picks for June1 of 9
American Animals | Premieres in U.S. theaters Friday, June 1
If heist movies are your jam (or even if they aren't), you should watch Bart Layton's incredibly stylish and clever take on the genre. The movie stars Evan Peters as the ringleader of a group of privileged and ultimately hapless teenagers who dream big but are undone by their own personal and character failings. While Peters, known for his wide-ranging and ambitious body of TV work, is the easy standout here among some solid performers, it's Layton's innovative mode of storytelling that's both fresh and unnerving. Interspersing direct-to-camera footage of the real-life robbers throughout the reenacted heist, Layton destabilizes the viewer, forcing us to question the veracity of a set of events and to grapple with our temporary empathy toward seemingly nice individuals who make really dumb and harmful decisions. — Bret
