Editors' Picks: Our Favorite Things From the Week of June 102 of 9
Documentary of the Week, Part 1
It takes until probably the 17th appearance of someone in small wire-rimmed glasses, or maybe the first super-questionable haircut, to realize that Netflix's newly released true-crime series "The Staircase" is actually 14 years old. The whodunnit from Oscar-winning director Jean-Xavier de Lestrade, who appended 2013 follow-ups plus three recently shot episodes to his 2004 miniseries for this release, a la Boyhood or "The Life of Pablo," excels in the kind of incredible documentarian access, instant characterization, and moral ambiguity that have become Netflix docs' calling card, to the point of self-parody. All to say: It is, and was, groundbreaking. And strong enough to make us at least consider the "owl theory."
