Badrinath Ki Dulhania is not a sequel to Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania but does belong to the same franchise. Badrinath Ki Dulhania is a love story between Vaidehi and Badrinath whereas Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania is a love story between Kavya and Rakesh a.k.a. Humpty. Both films are directed by Shashank Khaitan and star Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan.

One of Varun Dhawan's nicknames in college was Badri. Reportedly, when he read the script for Badrinath Ki Dulhania and noticed that the character's nickname was also Badri, Varun Dhawan felt a personal connection to the character and the movie.

Since then, Varun Dhawan has been spotted with "Badrinath" tattooed in devanagri script on his right hand.

Badrinath Ki Dulhania pays tribute to Hindi Cinema's music and themes. For example, the movie features a remix, based on the 1990's hit song "Tamma Tamma Loge" from Thanedaar, called "Tamma Tamma Again". The original song starred Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt and was sung by Bappi Lahiri and Anuradha Paudwal.

During the promotion of the movie, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan met Madhuri Dixit who walked the actors through the iconic "Tamma Tamma Loge" dance move in a behind-the-scenes video promo.

To perfect their characters' accents and mannerisms, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan took acting and speech workshops with Director Shashank Khaitan to prepare for their roles.

Director Shashank Khaitan characterized Badrinath Bansal as a fan of Virat Kohli, captain of the Indian cricket team. To make sure the character looked the part, Khaitan told actor Varun Dhawan to get a Kohli-esque haircut for the movie.
