Censorship in anime and just about every form of art is a tricky subject. On the one hand, banning or censoring something on the basis of current social norms could lead to a slippery slope where nothing is safe. But, conversely, giving anime creators total freedom but with no discipline can and will lead to offensive material being made mainstream. In the case of these anime, it was a good thing some key censors and cuts were made.

These anime were based on manga that went too far when it came to pushing boundaries or challenging good taste, which is why it was understandable and even necessary for them to make some changes.
