Why choose this book to translate onto the small screen? I've read all of Mo Hayder's books and this is the 7th Jack Caffery installment. It seems weird to me to jump in towards the end and try to fit all the background context into an already complex story. There's no build up of the character for the audience to care enough.
And it's like Tom Cruise being Jack Reacher all over again! The casting doesn't fit the character. A world-weary, middle-aged, white English bloke with all his eccentricities and foibles shouldn't become a younger black man with limited life/ professional experience. Disappointing.

I have all of the books by Mo Hayder which are excellent. It would have been better for the series to have started with the first book so that you get to meet Jack Caffrey from the beginning. His description in the books is different to that portrayed in the series. Please BBC and other companies if you are going to produce a series from books look for actors who are as close to the main character's description as possible.
Will continue watching the series to the end even though it is disjointed in places and some of the acting is over the top, it may get better.
Hoping BBC will commission the other books in the series.

It started weird but then it got weirder. Then as the story progressed it got bizarre. So many silly and pointless story lines and twists. No one especially the police actually rationally or responsibly. As believable as a mermaid riding a unicorn. The scene with the 'river people' is gob-smackingly ridiculous. You'll be surprised to know our household watched it right to the end to see just how ridiculous it could get. We weren't disappointed. Was the writer/director trying to be Wes Anderson and Quentin Tarantino at the same time? Failed. Not even they could be this weird and be successful. Some well know actors in the cast, probably in hiding now.
