Raiders of the Lost Ark: A Timeless Classic That Still Sets the Standard

Spielberg and Lucas didn't just make a movie - they launched a legacy.

Steven Spielberg is truly a master of filmmaking, and watching Indiana Jones's first outing still gives goosebumps - it's easy to see why he holds such a reputation. The film is difficult to break down or criticise, largely because it flirts with perfection. The collaboration between George Lucas and Spielberg left a lasting impression on audiences - a legacy of almost biblical proportion. Parents have introduced their children to Indiana Jones for generations, as if he were a real family friend, and that tradition continues even today.

Whether it's Harrison Ford as Han Solo or Henry Jones Jr., Lucas and Spielberg captured the magic of cinema in a way that allows their stories to live forever - not just through merchandise or marketing, but through their influence on the next generation of filmmakers. Do Woody and Buzz Lightyear ring a bell? Whether it's Indiana fleeing a giant boulder or Woody scrambling from a rolling globe, the inspiration is undeniable.

    A Groundbreaking Opening Scene

Take the film's strong opening, for example - set in 1936, when American archaeologist Indiana Jones recovers a golden idol from a booby-trapped Peruvian temple. I remember watching it as a kid, being frightened by the skeletons and totally immersed in the eerie, mysterious setting. It felt like I was on the adventure with Indy, enduring the dark, cold, wet, and terrifying temple. Then came the iconic boulder scene, the creeping score, and the locals with blow darts - I forgot I was watching a movie.

Now? Well, I've lost count of how many times I've seen this film, but I see it differently now. I notice the lighting, tone, camera angles, score, and, of course, the acting. Everything holds up - often better than most films made today. The orchestral score is outstanding, and the stunts bring a grounded realism that CGI often fails to capture. Yes, I know there's CGI in the final act, but it's used sparingly and only when absolutely necessary.

    Unforgettable Performances

The performances are strong, starting with our main protagonist, Harrison Ford, who portrays a stern and more stubborn Indiana Jones in this first film - a man with flaws, yet firm and assertive, possibly carrying the weight of past regrets, especially with Marion. He's a lone ranger obsessed with discovery, driven now more than ever to stop the Ark from falling into the wrong hands.

Karen Allen has great chemistry with Ford and delivers a strong performance. Her character, grieving and often restricted by the men around her, is introduced in a memorable scene - out-drinking a local in a whiskey duel. She's clever and cunning, capable of holding her own.

Paul Freeman is a standout adversary as Belloq, easily swayed by power and money. Freeman brings depth and charisma to the role, showing glimpses of humanity through his affection for Marion, which adds layers to his character.

Ronald Lacey plays Toht with chilling menace - emotionless, sadistic, and unsettling, he's an unforgettable villain. John Rhys-Davies as Sallah and Denholm Elliott as Marcus Brody provide strong support, helping round out what has become a timeless adventure classic. It's also interesting to spot a very young Alfred Molina in what now seems like a minor role - though it was likely the start of a brilliant career.

    A Legacy Etched in Time

The legacy of Raiders of the Lost Ark would live on through future instalments, as a three-film deal had already been made. However, as a standalone film, it's clear that nothing could truly surpass it. The dark, eerie tone of the original could never be fully replicated, and any attempt would inevitably lean further into humour and spectacle.

This was the film that gave us the first unforgettable notes of that triumphant theme, the silhouette of the fedora and whip - now permanently etched in our collective memory. The Indiana Jones of this film remains a bit of an enigma - less talkative, more mysterious, and somehow more grounded. Like many iconic adventures, the first time is often the best - and for Raiders, that holds true in every sense.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre game is a homage to the 1974 film and includes references in a bundle. This is my first time playing this type of game, as I've never played Dead by Daylight, although now I do feel more intrigued to see what all the fuss is about. This game is so much fun to play with friends online - it even inspired me to go and check out the original film.

It does appear to be an online-only game, which could disappoint those wanting a solo story mode or campaign. The atmosphere really sets the tone, and the graphics are reasonable for the type of game we're investing in. You can either play as a victim or a family member hunting down their prey. The idea is simplistic but works; however, I can imagine that after a dozen or so hours, it may well become repetitive for the more serious gamer.

Everything that audiences loved about the films has been transitioned into the game, making it a very real and authentic horror experience. If you've ever wondered how you might cope with being trapped and isolated, chased down by crazed lunatics, or stuck in the family's basement trying to escape - nothing has come closer to that experience than this.

The first episode might come across as slow; however, it gives a fantastic sense of the '90s, much like Stranger Things did for the mini-series that aired in 2018.

The episode focuses on Peyton Kennedy (played by Kate Messner) and Luke O'Neil (Jahi Di'Allo Winston). What is satisfying so far is how nostalgic the show feels, capturing what it would have been like to be a kid in the '90s. We see three nerdy male characters becoming curious about girls and eager to explore, though lacking confidence.

Peyton Kennedy is approached by Luke, much to the surprise of his friends. They are all part of a film club. Later, Peyton's character reveals a surprising twist towards the end.

Overall, it's a nice start to the mini-series that keeps the audience engaged with lighthearted comedy and some great '90s references.
