First off I have a real problem with Gangster Porn. Glorifying a "business " that preys on peoples weakness, turning city's into jungles of despair. In no universe can should anyone make money and that includes Television production companies. All are equally culpable in the destruction of our society's.
This is no better. Here we are shown ordinary decent people that use violence as a negotiation tool. Who's inherent greed and laziness horrible people in every way imaginable.
For all the fab houses, expensive cars. Trashy women. Booze and music this is something I'll only watch 1 episode of for obvious rasons.
Oh. The TV show. Its the same as all the other are really you jealous of this type of trash AVOID.

A different type of movie with it's own charm. Houston and Bening are excellent. Cussack is an choice that I never acquired. Grifters got 4 Oscar nominations , one each for Bening and Houston. Hard to see Hollywood giving a similar film a second look.
Side point...Bening is really tiny, almost alarmingly so.
Directed by Stephen Frears who always makes quality films this is a tale I enjoyed when released and watching many years later it's strange that its aged so badly. Even the Streaming giants would not bother with a script like this now.
The plot is an American stable. People on the edge of society, America loves these morality stories. They see what happens if the car payments aren't met.
We get a peek into cheating at gambling and a whole lot more. An education of the wrong sort.
This is slow at times and brutal and the last act comes at no surprise.
Watch it to see how America has changed in almost 35 years.

What a lark... what an education. Watching Alastair Sim give a masterclass in, well everything, Terry-Thomas playing himself..swine, those teeth. What a gift. And Ian Carmichael playing the fool. And then we have the "others"
Legends all. Peter Jones and Dennis Price selling cars!, John Le Mesurier being superior, his wife Hattie Jacques (she really is) being even more superior.
And Irene Handl, remember the original "The Italian Job" (not that Billy Bob Thornton travesty) she played Benny Hill's sister, she with the cats and the large maid. One of my all time favs. Unforgettable.
Here we have Janette Scott as (April) The plot is who gets the girls April. But along the way the crew make a British postwar class ridden comedy classic.
The scenes with Dunstan and Dudley as the used car crooks as brilliant.
The tennis match is great.
But why did they have to have Carmichael go all chivalrous at the end.
Better he stayed a cad, be the star graduate of the School for Scoundrels I love it.
