Best 100 Horror Films: The Objective Unsubjective List
NOTE: This list hasn't been properly updated in years. There is a new and much better version of it. I'd suggest you go to this link instead, for my 1000 Horror Movies Ranked Rated & Reviewed list:
I didn't really feel like putting together this list, but the thousands and thousands of my rabid fans begged me to until I finally gave in to their teary-eyed pleads. They were on their knees, sobbing their guts out. How does one reject such a demand? I am not made out of stone.
Unlike my "Best 100 Films" list, there is a significant gap in quality between the first ten here and the last 30 or so. In other words, the list starts off with excellent films and ends with good ones. I naively thought I could fill 100 places here with more-or-less high quality horror flicks.
I've seen over 600 horror films, and most of them are mediocre or outright stink. It's a mindless but fun genre. You lower your expectations considerably and they still manage to disappoint you nearly every time. And that's where this list comes in: it's a chance for you not to waste your time seeking out the good and great ones by having to filter them through all the crap, but to go straight to the worthiest horror flicks.
I've decided not to include sci-fi films with elements of horror, the "Aliens" quadrilogy or "Event Horizon", for example. Also, the list is dominated by supernatural horror films, because: 1) I can't stand the serial-killer genre, and 2) serial-killer flicks I consider to be thrillers, not horror films.
