True horror. One of the best war movies ever made put you inside the war. A sensorial nightmare. The effects of Second War inside and outside a boy that thought fighting was an adventure.

Slighlty cheesy, but still a good film.
It is much more about the generation change, with a youth looking for a new lifestyle and without a cause and facing adulthood as a boring routine, contrasting with a previous generarion that faced much harsher difficulties in war but also motivated by the struggle against fascism, than properly about a story. Indeed, there are many small stories in characters' lives which do not form a strong connection and in my opinion many of them should have been cut off in order to have a lighter, shorter and more lapidated film (perhaps half of its length would be the necessary). In the end of first half (the movie is divided in a juvenile half and an adult one) and in almost all the second half, screenplay seems less solid, lost in a difusion of events unnecessary to show the environment (what is done beautifully in the first hour, with a magnificent cinematography and camera moves) or to pass a message. What begins brilliantly, seeming a lighter version of great classics from Mikhail Kalatozov's moviemaking and cinematography, ends somewhat boring and unfocused. Another cut would make the film much better, a masterpiece.
Impressive footage but somewhat confusing storytelling.
"Five evenings" is interesting mainly for showing the costumes in Soviet Union, but the story premises are confusing and sometimes misleading.
If Glauber Rocha were an Ukranian Hutsul, he would have made this movie. For its allegorical approach and visual style it does remind Cinema Novo, and is from the same age. Visually interesting piece, but also harsh to follow and confusing sometimes. I also think it seems to be two different films.
Very interesting and original animation work, but a sometwhat confusing outcome.
Special mention: it is not a film (but a TV mini-series) and it's Belgian. Though, an important part of it features Eastern European actors and characters and it is so good!
Special mention: one more amazing TV series and not a film. Although the story is held during Renaissance in italy, this is a Hungarian/Irish/Canadian production.
