In my opinion - the most important, most under-rated and most watchable sitcom ever made. Only 6 episodes, this brilliant program tears apart the 'middle of the road' state of comedy in the UK and sticks a massive finger up its arse! Ben Elton's finest hour!
This probably would have been my life if I hadn't emigrated! For those of us now slipping through middle age, this sitcom conjures up the best of the '90s.
Britain's favorite unfiltered character is comedic genius.
More Ben Elton and yet more underrated British comedy. Heartwarming tales of a dedicated and officious Inspector versus all the other coppers he works with! David Haig steals this show as D.I. Derek Grim.
The third series is the best of the four Blackadder outings, I think.
The second series of Blackadder is the second best of the four!
Brilliant (if predictable and formulaic) show featuring Alan at his unfiltered best. It's a shame the same actors played on every show. Oh well.
THE groundbreaking 'mockumentary' which gave hope to all downtrodden white, privileged, middle-aged, white men!
If you like my list of favorite British comedy programs then THIS program should be on your list, too. Early Doors slipped under the radar, but it's a beautiful slice of life.PLEASE find a way to watch this forgotten masterpiece.
The lunatic and surreal adventures of students in Thatcher's Britain. It changed British comedy and was replayed out every day in sixth form rooms across Britain!
Probably the best round up of characters and actors in any British sit-com. No wonder it's still played on the BBC and no wonder it still crushes the competition every Christmas!
As true and as relevant today as it was decades ago. Brilliant writing and first-rate actors bring laughs to the corridors of power.
As true and as relevant today as it was decades ago. Brilliant writing and first-rate actors bring laughs to the corridors of power. Even better than it's predecessor?
A gentle look back in time at a shopkeeper's battle with an errant errand boy, a state registered nurse and a violent cash register!
Lowlife scheming landlord battles loneliness by upsetting his tenants. Yes, Miss Jones! Wonderfully racist!
The only reason this isn't higher on the list is because the horrible laughter track makes it almost unwatchable. But if you can get past that, it's brilliant, Darling!
Gervais and Merchant successfully jump from humble office surroundings to the glamorous world of showbiz. For me, the friendship between Andy and Maggie is the show's greatest strength.
The brilliant Leonard Rossiter takes on the world at Sunshine Desserts.
Oh, Richard Beckinsale, what we missed out on because of your rubbish ticker. Great cast of characters doing time in the echoey chambers of an old Victorian prison.
Probably the best of 'young comedy' made in recent times, at least for me. These kids are on a tear as they invent their own language to get around not being able to swear on the telly! Brilliant adventures.
Innocent and flirty TV fare as a man shares a flat with two girls. Excellent writing kept this series afloat longer than most of the other fluff that came out around this time. The Ropers, living downstairs, made sure they didn't enjoy themselves too much! A heartwarming treasure.
Influential TV series from the '60s, because of brilliant writing and the real sense of how England was changing at this time, especially in the depressed, post-industrial north.
Good fun with the silly, middle-class characters who embodied everything it was to be (and not be) living in the home counties in the 70s. The excellent cast brings this to life as the stories sometimes seem a bit forced and unrealistic.
Richard Curtis doing what he does best... creating a romantic and insane world of little England! Marmite cake, anyone? No, no, no, no... yes!
This reboot picks up from when the self-absorbed Terry comes back from the army to find out his mate, Bob, is getting married and taking life a lot more seriously. As with the '60s episodes, the comedy is played through the understated drama of a changing country.
Doesn't hold up very well today, but I still love it because of Sid James.
Another British comedy that is a lot more than the sum of its parts! Deliciously sexist adventures of a couple of men who were a lot older than they should have been!
This sci-fi comedy ran for too long but at least the first few series were brilliantly written and great fun to watch.
Insane adventures of an unbearable health center manager who drives everyone bonkers!
