Overall this is not a great movie, I admit. The love story for example is probably too sentimental. But there is a lot of "camp" value, for which I predict the movie will be loved 10 years or so from now. This movie also has some interesting sci-fi ideas and action scenes.
The French queen and her court live in splendid isolation until reality tragically catches up with them in the form of the French revolution. The decadence at the royal court displayed in this movie is overwhelmingly beautiful. Some people are bothered by the fact that the score of this historical movie consists of modern rather than classical music. Since I never assume that the characters can hear the score, I don't see the problem. :-)
