Melissa Barrera’s new horror movie Abigail is out now in theaters, but the favorable critic reviews do not seem to encourage fans at all as the movie struggles to make a profit. The horror genre has been suffering from a decline in people’s interest over the past few years, and this is already becoming an alarming trend.
Abigail (2024)
The lukewarm audience reception to horror films can be attributed to several factors. As it is not yet the season for spooky vibes, viewers are not really looking into scaring themselves. The movie’s weak marketing can also contribute to its downfall.

Radio Silence Talk ‘Abigail,’ Their ‘Scream’ Exit and Trying to Make ‘The Shining’ Elevators Jealous
Abigail has been a long time coming for Radio Silence, the filmmaking collective consisting of co-directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin/Tyler Gillett and producer Chad Villella.
Coming off of their successful relaunch of the Scream franchise in 2022, the team strived to make another film before they returned to Ghostface. One idea was a feature now known as Abigail, but they ultimately ended up shooting Scream VI instead, as Scream rights holder Spyglass Media was eager to keep the momentum going. And together, they did just that, as Scream VI went on to set domestic box office records for the franchise.
Still, Abigail never left Radio Silence’s minds. As they were making Scream VI, the team was also preparing to do the ballerina vampire pic immediately after they finished promoting Scream VI’s March 2023 release. After all, they’d just put out two Scream movies within a 14-month period, so it’s...

Christopher Landon is to make Drop, a new thriller whose cast is coming together. More on the movie right here.
It’s been several months now since Christopher Landon – he of Happy Death Day and Freaky – departed Scream 7 as cast members Melissa Barrera (currently on the big screen in the terrific Abigail) and Jenna Ortega left the films for different reasons (Ortega’s commitments to shooting the new series of Wednesday were said to have taken her out of the film). Landon was reported to have moved on at the end of last year, but even then, it was weeks before that he apparently quit the project.
While Kevin Williamson picks up Scream 7 – with a returning Neve Campbell – Christopher Landon has effectively gone home, to Jason Blum’s Blumhouse company. Well, that and Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes. The two production companies are coming together for the film Drop,...

Melissa Barrera may have been fired from the “Scream” series, but she’s still very much a part of the franchise’s “family.”
Several “Scream” actors, including Mason Gooding, David Arquette, Matthew Lillard and Skeet Ulrich, attended the Los Angeles premiere of Barrera’s new horror movie, “Abigail” Wednesday night. “Abigail” is helmed by “Scream” (2022) and “Scream 6” co-directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known collectively as Radio Silence.
“Even after the project is over, we still have our chat,” Barrera told me. “They were all invited here and a lot of them from ‘Scream’ came and I think it says a lot. It says a lot about how true the love is. No one can ever take that away from us.”

Major controversy hit the “Scream” franchise last year when lead actress Melissa Barrera was fired from the franchise following Pro-Palestinian/anti-genocide remarks that the actress made on social media, comments that Spyglass Entertainment viewed as antisemitic. Fans were confused, upset, and backlashed against the move, many angered by the way the series dumped her and then went back to re-casting original franchise stars Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox instead.

Melissa Barrera feels like her 'Scream' character arc gave her "closure".The 33-year-old actress played Sam Carpenter - the daughter of 1996 'Scream' movie killer Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) - in 2022's 'Scream' and its sequel 'Scream VI, but she was fired from upcoming flick 'Scream 7' due to her publicly pro-Palestinian stance. Her character's story dealt with the idea of whether the connection to her father meant Sam was always meant to be a murderer, but she was seen throwing her father's mask onto the concrete below.Speaking to Collider's Perri Nemiroff for 'Ladies Night', she said: "I feel like I've gotten closure. My head is clear."She added: “I feel like the ending of [Scream VI ] was a very good ending, and so I don’t feel like 'Ugh, I got left in the middle.'"No,...

A lot of Scream franchise fans were hoping Melissa Barrera would reprise the role of Samantha Carpenter from Scream (2022) and Scream VI in a third Scream movie, and it has been said that the directors of those films, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, wanted to return for a Scream 7 that would wrap up the Sam Carpenter story as a trilogy. But that’s not how it worked out. The directors went off to make Abigail, and Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media weren’t willing to wait for them to circle back to Scream 7. So Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett were, as they put it, “exited” from the project and it started moving forward without them… only to hit a series of speed bumps. Including the day when Barrera was fired after comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass. So there...

Scream, starring Drew Barrymore, is one of the best horror films of this generation. Helmed by Wes Craven, this slasher film marked the beginning of a franchise that has become a sort of guilty pleasure for movie lovers.
The film stood out in a lot of ways, but most importantly, it successfully revived the horror genre, which had become a little stale. The director and the creative heads deftly made use of scare tactics for maximum effect. This was not just limited to the audience, though. Even the cast was unaware of the identity of the actor who played Ghostface, which only added to the atmosphere the film aimed to create.

It might have seemed at one point that, like the Tower of London's raven tradition, the Scream franchise could not stand without stalwarts Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox. But last year's Scream VI did well enough without Campbell (who opted to pass due to an insultingly low salary offer). Now, though, following a wave of issues and director changes, the seventh entry is most certainly headed in a nostalgic direction, with Campbell back and now Cox in talks to similarly return.

The Scream franchise was fairly popular for releasing some of the most enjoyable horror movies in pop culture. Starting with the first Scream movie in 1996, this slasher franchise has 5 more movies and a TV show under its belt. But after Scream 6 (2023), things took a turn when actress Melissa Barrera was fired from the franchise. Her social media post about the Israel-Hamas was deemed antisemitic by the production house behind the franchise, and they decided to let go of the actress in November last year.

Courteney Cox may be answering the Scream call one again, with sources saying the actor is in talks for the upcoming Scream VII.
Cox originated the role of reporter Gale Weathers in 1996’s Scream, and has appeared in its five sequels. Melissa Barrera was one of the first and most prominent actors to lose work for speaking out about the Israel-Hamas War when Spyglass Media dropped her from the “Scream” franchise over social media posts that were critical of the Israeli government and American media and expressed support for Palestinian people. Some, including Spyglass Media brass, believed the posts to be antisemitic. And so, after starring in two hit, franchise-reigniting “Scream” movies, Barrera was out, and would not be returning for “Scream 7.”
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Barrera reflects on the fallout from her removal from the “Scream” franchise. While she’s open to someday playing survivor Sam Carpenter again, she’s not holding her breath. “I’ve learned to never say never, but also a lot of things would have to happen for Sam to come back,” Barrera said. “For now, next page, next chapter, and...

Wes Craven, director of the first four films in the Scream franchise, passed away in 2015. So when Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media teamed up to revive the franchise with the new sequel that was released in 2022, the directing duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett took the helm. They then returned to direct Scream VI the following year, with both of their contributions to the franchise centering on sisters Samantha and Tara Carpenter, played by Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. During a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett confirmed that they had been planning to return to direct Scream 7 and complete a Carpenter sisters trilogy… but they mistakenly thought they could fit the production of their Universal Monsters movie Abigail (formerly known as Dracula’s Daughter) in between the making of Scream VI and Scream 7. Turns out, Spyglass wanted to get moving on Scream 7 sooner than their schedules allowed,...

In 2022, Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media revived the Scream franchise with a new entry (the fifth) that was a box office hit, earning almost $139 million at the global box office. Fourteen months later, Scream VI came along – and became an even bigger hit, pulling in almost $169 million at the global box office, a number that was up there with the series’ heyday, when the first Scream and Scream 2 made just over $170 million. (Scream 3 also made over $160 million – only Scream 4 failed to crack $100 million.) So, of course, the companies are moving full steam ahead with Scream 7. While the movie seemed, initially, to be on the fast-track to success, the track it’s on has turned out to be a shockingly bumpy ride.

Not long ago, we reported that the future is looking a lot brighter for the upcoming Scream 7 movie, with Neve Campbell confirming her return as Sydney Prescott despite pay-related issues with the production, as well as Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original movies, coming to direct the movie. Sure, the previous movie’s stars, including Jenna Ortega, left the project, but it seems that the production is heating up for a bombastic, nostalgia-filled sequel based on the rumors we have.
Namely, industry insider Daniel Richtman (@DanielRPK) recently reported rumors that two major stars might be returning for the upcoming sequel, which is more than great if you ask us. The first name is that of Courtney Cox, who is supposedly returning as Gale Weathers for Scream 7. And while this is certainly great news, the return of Cox’s character was more or less expected, so this doesn’t...

On March 12, 2024, Neve Campbell took to her Instagram and shared a picture of the Scream 7 script, announcing that she will be returning as Sidney Prescott in the upcoming Scream installment. This news came as a welcome surprise after Campbell’s highly publicized absence from Scream 6 due to a pay dispute. Sidney had been the main target of the Ghostface killers in the first four Scream movies and had become the iconic final girl of the series. Scream 5, however, took a different approach. This prequel focused on an entirely new set of characters — sisters Tara (Jenna

The "Scream" franchise is still alive and stabbing. The horror series began back in 1996 with Wes Craven's surprise hit, and it's continued on over the decades. Recently, "Scream 7" fell apart after star Melissa Barrera was fired from the franchise, and the film's director, Christopher Landon, subsequently walked away from the project. Now, however, it looks like the seventh film in the series is back on track, with franchise creator Kevin Williamson on board to direct and original star Neve Campbell returning.
With "Scream" back in the news, you might be suddenly inspired to revisit the franchise from the beginning. However, you might also be wondering where to start, since the numbering system of the series is a little out of whack.
Don't worry, we're here to help.

After several delays, Scream 7 is moving forward with the return of star Neve Campbell and original writer Kevin Williamson at the helm.
It’s no secret that the next Scream film has been fraught with difficulties, from the firing of Melissa Bererra to Jenna Ortega leaving, followed by director Christopher Landon.
One of the biggest points of contention was the absence of Neve Campbell, who elected not to return for the sixth film due to a pay dispute.
However, whatever problems there were appear to have been resolved, as Campbell posted a lengthy statement on her Instagram account confirming that she is officially back for Scream 7.
Not only that, but Deadline reports that Kevin Williamson – who created the franchise and wrote the screenplays for Scream, Scream 2 and Scream 4 – will direct. He has directed just one feature previously, the dark comedy Teaching Mrs Tingle, which was released...

Scream is responsible for bringing about a whole new wave of horror in pop culture, ever since the original movie premiered in 1996, nearly 30 years ago.
The Wes Craven-directed film, featuring a ghost face-masked killer on the loose hunting down Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette, won acclaim for its meta presentation of horror movie tropes, while breaking the rules of the typical horror film.
Scream also brought about several sequels, and even a TV series.
Now that we know at least one big star returning for Scream 7, we’re ranking the Scream movies and TV show seasons from worst to best, based on their Audience Score at RottenTomatoes.

After what feels like months of bad news about the Scream franchise, there is finally something positive to report. Neve Campbell – who turned down the chance to reprise her iconic central role of Sidney Prescott in the most recent (sixth) entry because of an insultingly low pay offer, has hit social media to reveal that she'll be back for the seventh film — and that longtime franchise producer (and original writer) Kevin Williamson is stepping up to direct for the first time.
The otherwise yet to be officially titled Scream VII has been beset by issues. Following 2022's Scream and last year's Scream VI, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett opting to move onto other projects (vampire pic Abigail is due in cinemas next month), the film series also saw star Melissa Barrera fired after outspoken comments on the Israel-Gaza conflict and fellow actor Jenna Ortega bow out for suspiciously convenient scheduling reasons.

Scream, a saga that has sliced its way through the fabric of pop culture since its debut, is gearing up for its seventh installment with a twist that has the horror community buzzing. Neve Campbell, the original survivor Sidney Prescott, had previously stepped away from the franchise due to a pay dispute during Scream 6. Consider this the latest twist -- or, more accurately, a pair of twists -- in the "Scream" franchise's shock-filled history. After the 2022 film brought back the franchise in style with the fifth well-received entry (both among critics and especially at the box office), reuniting the original trio while introducing a new cast of younger characters led by Melissa Barrera, the series seemed to be right on track. That trajectory hit a bit of a snag when reports came out about Spyglass lowballing icon Neve Campbell for "Scream 6," followed swiftly by the controversial decision to fire new franchise lead Barrera from the seventh "Scream" film after her vocal support for Palestine in a series of social media posts, not to mention co-star Jenna Ortega's decision to drop out altogether.

Well, Spyglass paid up to keep in the Sidney Prescott business.
Neve Campbell shared on Instagram Tuesday that she will be back for “Scream VII” after publicly shunning the project following a low pay offer — and that the movie is back on track after seemingly falling apart last fall.
The actress, who has played final girl Sidney in the franchise dating back to the 1996 original directed by Wes Craven, also shared that the next film will be directed by Kevin Williamson. He was the screenwriter of the original “Scream,” plus “Scream 2,” and has served in roles as a producer or executive producer on the films since.
