Blown Away: The Best 90s Action Movie You Never Saw!
Image
The Story: A mad Ira bomber (Tommy Lee Jones) escapes prison and travels to Boston, where he stalks his former protégé (Jeff Bridges) who now has a new identity and is a member of the police bomb squad.

The Players: Director: Stephen Hopkins. Writers: John Rice, Joe Batteer, and Jay Roach. Starring: Jeff Bridges, Tommy Lee Jones, Lloyd Bridges, Forest Whitaker, and Suzy Amis (Titanic). Score by Alan Silverstri (The Avengers).

The History: Blown Away was supposed to be the sleeper hit of 1994. It had all the ingredients. Tommy Lee Jones had just won the Oscar for playing U.S Marshal Samuel Gerard in The Fugitive, and this would be his first full-on bad guy part since Under Siege, which was an unlikely megahit towards the end of 1992. It also had Jeff Bridges in full-on action hero mode for the first time in his career. While Bridges is now regarded as a beloved character actor,...

Legendary Bluesman Buddy Guy on His Buzzy Movie Role in ‘Sinners’: ‘It’s a Dream Come True, to Be Honest… I Did It to Help the Blues’ (Exclusive)
Image
Damn right, he’s got the blues… and the scars to show for it. A surprise extended cameo at the end of “Sinners” [spoiler alert!] reveals that Sammie, who is played as a youth in the 1930s by Miles Caton, survived the film’s long night of terror, thanks in part to how a resonator guitar can be used as a weapon. And he has lived on in the form of someone who looks and plays very much like Buddy Guy. It is Buddy Guy, of course, still around and still arguably — no, inarguably — the most legendary blues guitarist walking the planet.

Variety caught up with Guy, 88, on the phone from his native Chicago, where he still plays at his club, much like the aged Sammie in “Sinners” still plays at his. Guy says, “If I could get quite a few more people speaking like you, I might consider myself as a movie actor.

Halt! Who goes there? A new Small Soldiers 4K Blu-ray will be hitting shelves this summer
Image
Commandos! Get ready for a new crisp 4K Blu-ray release of the under-appreciated Joe Dante film Small Soldiers. The 1998 movie can be seen as a spiritual successor of sorts to Dante’s Gremlins series — as little sentient beings run amok on an unsuspecting group of people in a small town and it takes a plucky young hero, with his own little ally, to try to contain and destroy them. Blu-ray.com has reported that Paramount Home Media Distribution is set to release this new 4K remaster alongside a limited edition Steelbook Blu-ray on July 22.

The movie includes an all-star cast with Kirsten Dunst, Gregory Smith, Jay Mohr, Phil Hartman, Kevin Dunn, David Cross and Denis Leary. Meanwhile, the voice cast includes Tommy Lee Jones, Jim Brown, George Kennedy, Frank Langella, Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, Ernest Borgnine, Harry Shearer, Bruce Dern, Clint Walker, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Christina Ricci.

The description reads,...

Are The Accents In Peaky Blinders Accurate? It's Complicated
Image
As a Brit, I've always been fascinated by the huge array of regional dialects packed into a relatively small space on our islands. Every country has different accents, of course, but it's remarkable how an accent can change so dramatically in the U.K. over such short distances. Just listen to the difference between Scouse and Manc with only 35 miles separating Liverpool and Manchester. All our radically different accents provide fuel for endless banter, and everyone has their favorites and least favorites. Personally, I can listen to people from Newcastle, Yorkshire, and Wales talk all day, but I'm not a big fan of Essex (partly due to local rivalry as a Tractor Boy from Suffolk) and the Birmingham accent, or Brummie.

Which brings us to "Peaky Blinders," the hugely popular BBC crime drama set in Birmingham in the early 20th century. That location makes the show something of an anomaly for British TV,...

How to watch the Captain America movies in order (including the Avengers)
Image
The Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise is the most successful in Hollywood history. It has grossed over $31 billion at the box office and its legacy will continue in the years ahead, with plenty of exciting titles on the horizon. From the Infinity Saga to the Multiverse Saga and beyond, fans are loving what the MCU is producing.

There are countless beloved heroes in the franchise, but Captain America might just be the most important of all. The Star-Spangled Man With A Plan is, after all, the first Avenger, so it makes sense that he be at the center of the franchise - and he was, for the longest time. As one of the leaders of the Avengers and a pop-culture legend even within the fictitious world of the franchise, Chris Evans' Steve Rogers was a fixture of the MCU until 2019's Avengers: Endgame when he handed the shield over to longtime friend,...

Angelina Jolie's Forgotten Rom-Com Flop Is Finding Fans On Netflix Two Decades Later
Image
Somewhere amid the mounds of "content" on Netflix's servers are some pretty good romantic comedies. The streamer isn't too bad when it comes to this particular genre, offering everything from beloved '90s classics such as "Notting Hill" to more modern hits such as Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney's frisky and fun "Anyone But You." Sadly, "Life or Something Like It" probably won't be making any lists of the best Netflix rom-coms anytime soon — though there might be hope yet.

What on earth is "Life or Something Like It?" Well, that sort of gets to the issue with this movie, which is that nobody saw it when it debuted in theaters back in 2002. Starring Angelina Jolie and Edward Burns, the film follows a reporter who interviews a supposed prophet, only to be told that her demise is imminent and that she's wasting her life. Yes, this is a rom-com,...

When Will Smith Began Filming This Blockbuster Sequel With An Unfinished Script: “The Decision Sony Made Was…”
Image
Which Movie Did Will Smith Begin Filming Without A Finished Script?(Photo Credit –Instagram)

Back in 2012, Men in Black 3 kicked off production without a finished script, and somehow, it still turned out to be one of Will Smith’s biggest hits. Risky move? Absolutely. However, Smith and director Barry Sonnenfeld believed the studio’s bold play had merit.

In fact, Sonnenfeld stood by the chaos, saying (via Newsweek), “Starting the movie without an absolutely finished script is not normally the right way to do movies. But I feel the decision Sony made was the right decision. On this one, we might still be waiting for the script. Sometimes, if you just dip your toe in, you’ll never dive in because it’s too stupidly cold.”

That icy plunge didn’t stop Men in Black 3 from pulling in a cool $624 million worldwide. Sure, it didn’t match the pop-culture explosion of the 1997 original,...

Robert Downey Jr. & Tommy Lee Jones' Slick Crime Thriller Takes Over Tubi's Charts
Image
If you're not yet a Tubi convert, you likely soon will be. Subscription streamers continue to raise their fees only to present you with ad-riddled media anyway, and that's if the media you're looking for even happens to be on these services. It's sort of ridiculous how many subscriptions I have, and yet it seems as though every time I search for a movie from years ago, I'm confronted with a choice between renting or buying. So, if we're always going to be told to shell out more money for the stuff we want to watch regardless of how many services we already pay for, the most logical response would be to subscribe to one or two streamers that you reliably use and accept that the dreaded "buy or rent" screen will be an inevitable part of your future.

But paid streamers aren't the only option. Enter: Tubi. The free streaming platform,...

G20 Review: Viola Davis has her guns out in Prime Video’s formulaic action movie
Image
Plot: U.S. President Danielle Sutton must defend her family, fellow leaders and the world when the G20 summit in Cape Town, South Africa is taken over by terrorists

Review: I grew up in the era of Arnold, Stallone, Jcvd, Bruce Willis, and, yes, Steven Seagal. Action movies of the 1980s and 1990s had a different flavor than today, but seeing an actor play the President of the United States and kicking terrorists or alien asses was always a fun and exploitative experience. It is impossible to avoid that surge of patriotism as Harrison Ford said, “Get off my plane,” or Bill Pullman declared, “Today we celebrate our Independence Day.” In recent years, Gerard Butler and Channing Tatum have played agents protecting the President and garnering their own action-hero status. Still, it will never replace Potus wielding a gun or beating the hell out of a bad guy. The Prime...

Drew Barrymore Praises Val Kilmer for Being "Kind" During 'Batman Forever'
Image
It has been a week since Val Kilmer passed away at the age of 65, and his fans, along with Hollywood, are still mourning his death but also looking back at his body of work. Drew Barrymore took the time on her talk show to look back at a special time in her life when she shared the screen with the actor in 1995's Batman Forever, and it's a memory that the actress is very fond of because of how much of a gentleman Kilmer was on the set.

During an episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, via Entertainment Weekly, the actress welcomed guest Kevin Bacon, and they both looked back on working with Kilmer and the late Joel Schumacher. While Bacon never did a film with the actor, they did a Broadway production called The Slab Boys in 1983 and the actor appeared in Schumacher's 1990 film Flatliners. For Barrymore's part,...

Drew Barrymore Fondly Remembers Val Kilmer: “So Nurturing And Kind And Safe”
Image
While chatting with guest Kevin Bacon on her eponymous daytime program, Drew Barrymore fondly reminisced about working with Val Kilmer, who along with director Joel Schumacher, convinced her to star in Batman Forever.

The tender moment came up as The Bondsman star reflected on various old projects of his, including 1990’s Flatliners, which the late Schumacher also helmed. Jumping in to bond with her colleague, Barrymore recalled her own fond experience.

“I was friends with Joel Schumacher, the director, who I thought of this morning because it was he and Val Kilmer that pulled me into Batman Forever,” she said. “And Val Kilmer was so nice to me. He was so nurturing and kind and safe, which was a very important thing for me.”

Bacon chimed in that that was “probably not that common in those days.”

Barrymore agreed,...

Kiefer Sutherland Agreed to Oscar Winning 32 Years Old Harrison Ford Movie Remake to Do Something He Never Could in ‘24’

Kiefer Sutherland fought his way through Hollywood to reach the stage of being called one of the finest stars that the entertainment industry has ever seen, with iconic projects like 24 and Designated Survivor.

Although these projects were the ones that gave fame to Sutherland’s name, there were some things that the actor was unable to do in each one. That is why Kiefer Sutherland agreed to take part in a remake of a 1993 Oscar-winning Harrison Ford film.

'Great Admiration for Him': Jim Carrey Remembers Batman Forever Co-Star Val Kilmer
Image
Jim Carrey remembers his Batman Forever co-star Val Kilmer as a "generational talent". Kilmer died of pneumonia at the age of 65 earlier this week after a lengthy battle with throat cancer.

"I'm remembering Val Kilmer today with great admiration for him as a man and as a generational talent who left us an enviable legacy of indelible acting performances," Carrey said in a statement published by The New York Post. "His greatest artistic achievements were rivaled only by the grace and courage with which he endured his life’s most challenging moments. Wishing his family so much love."

Carrey starred as The Riddler opposite Kilmer's Bruce Wayne in 1995's Batman Forever. The film was Kilmer's first and only time portraying The Dark Knight. It was a huge box office success, pulling in $336 million worldwide, making it the sixth-highest-grossing film of the year. Kilmer took over the role of Batman from Michael Keaton,...

Steven Spielberg Sending Helicopter to Will Smith Helped but There Was Another Big Reason Why He Said Yes to Men in Black
Image
You know that old saying, “You can’t deny the call of the wild”? Well, sometimes it’s not just the wild calling, but a helicopter from Steven Spielberg himself, swooping in from the skies. And when that happens, how can you possibly say no?

That’s exactly what happened to Will Smith when he was offered a ride to Spielberg’s house to discuss Men in Black. But, despite the dramatic flair of a helicopter ride, there’s more to Smith’s decision than just a big-name director and a flashy gesture. His decision to join the Men in Black sequel was also about finding balance.

Val Kilmer’s Sacrifice to Help Robert Downey Jr. Battle His Addiction During His Hollywood Comeback
Image
Val Kilmer was often underrated as an actor, despite his prolific career spanning films like Real Genius, Top Gun, True Romance, and more. As Robert Ebert famously described him, he was the most unsung leading man of his generation, a legend whom we now mourn.

While the world recalls his legacy of being ‘hard to work with,’ here is an instance from behind the scenes of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang that showcases what a man he was behind the scenes. Apparently, as an act of solidarity for his co-star Robert Downey Jr., Kilmer did not drink during the film’s production, a profound act of friendship and a testament to Kilmer’s character that one should not forget.

Val Kilmer, 'Top Gun' and 'Batman Forever' Actor, Dead at 65
Image
Actor Val Kilmer, best known for his roles in Top Gun, Batman Forever, Willow, Tombstone, and more, died Tuesday April 1 in Los Angeles. That's according to The New York Times. The Nyt reports that his daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, says the cause was pneumonia. Kilmer had previously been diagnosed with throat cancer, but recovered in 2014. Kilmer's last appearance on-screen was reprising his role as Admiral Tom 'Iceman' Kazansky in Top Gun: Maverick for a bittersweet scene opposite his character's formal rival, Tom Cruise' Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. Kilmer's death marks a career that has spanned decades.

Kilmer was born Val Edward Kilmer on New Year's Eve (December 31) 1959 in Los Angeles. His acting career began in the early 1980s. He would star in one of the 80s biggest blockbusters that didn't have the word Star or Wars in it, Top Gun in 1986. The film would gross $357 million when it only took a reported $15 million to make.

“I would go to the set and watch Val work”: Val Kilmer Not Winning the Oscar for Doc Holliday Was a Crime After Yellowstone Star’s Revelation
Image
You’re at a party, and someone brings up the topic of actors who were criminally overlooked by the Academy. You chime in, “Well, let me tell you about Val Kilmer’s portrayal of Doc Holliday in ‘Tombstone.'” The room goes silent, all ears on you. You have their attention because, let’s face it, Kilmer’s Doc Holliday was so cool he made ice cubes shiver.

Yet, when Oscar season rolled around, the Academy treated him like an outlaw in a one-horse town. Hollywood has a long history of recognizing some performances while inexplicably ignoring others. Some actors receive multiple nominations for roles that seem forgettable, while others deliver career-defining performances only to be left off the ballot.

Val Kilmer: 5 films that should have earned him an award
Image
Val Kilmer was, to put in the parlance of his fellow 1980s icon Demi Moore, a popcorn actor. He was Iceman. He was Batman. He was Madmartigan. He was Jim Morrison. He was a Real Genius. He was our huckleberry.

Kilmer, the versatile, volatile teen idol-turned-brooding leading man, has died at 65 after a heroic battle with throat cancer, according to The New York Times. He leaves behind a screen legacy that, per IMDb, tallied 105 acting credits. Those included zeitgeist comedies, blockbuster action epics, fantasy, horror, sci-fi, and animated features — many of them indisputable classics helmed by a who's-who of filmmakers and starring some of Hollywood's greatest legends. Despite his enviable C.V., Kilmer never merited an Oscar nomination or an Emmy bid. The closest he got to a major award was a 2012 Grammy nomination for Best Spoken Word Album for The Mask of Zorro. But that's not to say Kilmer didn't deserve accolades.

Quentin Tarantino at an event for The Oscars (2013)
David Fincher to direct Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood spin-off
Quentin Tarantino at an event for The Oscars (2013)
Quentin Tarantino writes, David Fincher directs, Brad Pitt stars – it’s a Once Upon A Time In Hollywood spin-off movie. Reportedly.

When news of this story first emerged, we’d imagine that plenty of film fans simply dismissed it as an April Fool’s joke. But unless most of Hollywood’s most credible reporting sources are all in on it together, this is actually real: David Fincher is set to direct Quentin Tarantino’s script for a Once Upon A Time In Hollywood spin-off. It’s a screenplay that is said to have emerged from the latter filmmaker’s abandoned The Movie Critic project, once billed as his tenth and final film.

Outlets such as Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter and The Playlist (who broke the story) are all reporting it as true, and it certainly does fit with the speculation that was flying around a few weeks ago regarding Fincher’s next project for Netflix.

Locked Review: The Bill Skarsgard Trapped In A Car Movie Is Weirdly Relatable Right Now
Image
Before my screening of "Locked," director David Yarovesky made a surprise appearance to thank the press and the special guests in attendance, as this would be his first time watching the movie with a crowd outside of friends and colleagues. "When I started making this movie, I cannot tell you how many people said 'Oh cool, that's totally a streaming movie,' [...] so it's surreal because when you walk into an AMC and see it up on the screen like this, you don't know that it's a tiny indie movie." And he's right. "Locked" is the type of indie thriller that used to be a movie theater's bread and butter — low-budget/high-return seat-fillers like Kurt Russell's "Breakdown" or the Jeff Bridges and Tommy Lee Jones vehicle, "Blown Away" — that are now immediately dumped onto a streamer and lost to the void of algorithms. It's said often in the wake...

10 Best Navy Seal War Movies, Ranked
Image
The US military has been the focus of some of Hollywood's best movies, from naval aviators in Top Gun to special forces in projects like Delta Force and Executive Decision. One of the US' most prestigious units, the Navy SEALs, has been the focus of a variety of films and TV shows, exploring everything from life in the forces to combat missions. While the former can be interesting, it's the thick of battle that audiences love to see.

Navy SEALs remain one of Hollywood's favorite military units, and for good reason. From the rescue of Captain Phillips to the assassination of Osama bin Laden, they're effectively the face of America's elite heroes. While the movie business takes different angles with its exploration of them, the best ones go hard on the action. Whether it's a true story or a hard-hitting action movie, focusing on these elite soldiers rarely fails to impress.

Andrew Davis on His New Novel Disturbing the Bones, Remembering Gene Hackman, and the Difficulties of Trying to Get Movies Made Today
Image
We love speaking with filmmaker Andrew Davis. In late 2023 The Fugitive director came on our podcast The B-Side to discuss a slew of hidden gems as well as the 4K release of his Harrison Ford blockbuster.

Davis is back to talk about his novel Disturbing the Bones, a political thriller that reads like an entertaining, extrapolated version of some of his best films. The plot concerns an archaeological dig in Illinois wherein a body is discovered. It leads to a murder investigation amidst a global crisis spurned by a catastrophic, nuclear mistake.

The Film Stage spoke with Davis about the book, his Arnold Schwarzenegger action film Collateral Damage, his upcoming projects, and the state of both the film industry and the country.

You will earnestly learn about a lot of little things if you read/listen to this interview. Enjoy!

The Film Stage: Andrew Davis, welcome back! Today we’re...

Johnny Depp Had to Battle the Likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Clint Eastwood and George Clooney in His 3 Failed Oscar Attempts
Image
When looking at Johnny Depp’s filmography, one can easily recognize that he looks like an actor who the Academy would snub multiple times. Talented, versatile, and with no desire to win the coveted trophy, Depp’s incredible performances are a testament to the fact that being the people’s champion is much more valuable than any other award.

Still, the legendary actor has been nominated thrice for the award. His most popular role, Captain Jack Sparrow, got a nod in his first appearance. However, all three nominations were with incredibly talented artists as his fellow nominees, and winning was tough. Sean Penn, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Clint Eastwood were just some of his competitors.

Johnny Depp’s Oscar competitors included Daniel Day-Lewis, Leonardo DiCaprio, and more Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl | Credits: Walt Disney Pictures

Roger Ebert Gave Harrison Ford's "Bold" 'The Fugitive' a Perfect Score
Image
Silver-screen titans Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones further demonstrated why they are two of Hollywood's most exceptional performers when they headlined the 1993 action thriller The Fugitive, an adaptation of the popular '60s TV series that focuses on Dr. Richard Kimble as he finds himself on the run after he is horrifically framed and convicted for the grisly murder of his wife, for which he is sentenced to death. Determined to clear his name and catch the real culprit, Kimble attempts to evade the authorities and uncover the truth, with the dogged Deputy U.S. Marshal Sam Gerard determined to capture Kimble.

Both a lauded critical and commercial success, The Fugitive grossed over $368 million during its theatrical run while receiving seven Academy Award nominations, with Jones taking home the accolade for Best Supporting Actor and Ford being nominated for a Golden Globe for his commanding portrayal. Gene Hackman’s 'The Package' Is an Overlooked Gem
Image
While Gene Hackman stayed busy throughout his acting career, he seemingly worked nonstop in the late 1980s, especially in 1988, when he had five films in theatrical release. Whether Hackman appeared in good films during this period, like the great 1987 thriller No Way Out, or bad films, like Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, didn’t seem to matter to the actor, who later admitted that his incessant work schedule was grounded in his loneliness.

One of Hackman’s most underrated performances is featured in the 1989 political action thriller film The Package, in which he plays Johnny Gallagher, a Green Beret sergeant who is given the seemingly menial task of escorting a disgraced sergeant, played by Tommy Lee Jones, from West Berlin to the United States for a court-martial trial. However, after the prisoner escapes his custody, Gallagher becomes immersed in a conspiracy that threatens to trigger World War III.

‘Doctor Odyssey’ Stars Tease 2-Part Shark Attack Event: ‘It Only Gets Worse’
Image
The “Doctor Odyssey” crew will be rattled by a shark attack beginning with Thursday’s midseason premiere, entitled, appropriately enough, “Shark Attack!”

The shark storyline begins when First Officer Munroe (Marcus Emanuel Mitchell) is bitten after he goes surfing with Tristan (Sean Teale) and, as Teale told TheWrap about the two-parter storyline, “Shark attacks are brutal and it only gets worse as the episodes go on.”

Teale told TheWrap, “It’s pretty rough. I’m amazed at what we filmed, actually. I’m surprised that national television is going to receive what we filmed. It’s a big event.”

Teale, Joshua Jackson and Don Johnson (who costars as Captain Robert Massey) also talked about the upcoming “Ocean’s 11”-esque crossover that brings Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) from another Ryan Murphy series, “9-1-1,” to the Odyssey.

And, of course, one of the biggest cliffhangers we were left with in the midseason...

Every Movie Coming to Max in March 2025
Image
Max, as one of the most reliable streaming services, has access to one of the world's largest libraries of films — Warner Bros. Naturally, we should expect the platform to offer its users a plethora of options, and it does so by releasing movies from various genres on a regular basis.

In February 2025, for example, Max added some of the most popular films to its repertoire, such as Bad Boys and Final Destination, as well as original films like How I Let the Opus Dei. With March 2025 looking even more promising in terms of movie releases, here's what Max users can anticipate from the popular streaming service.

The Comeback Trail Review: Where Dark Humor Meets Tinseltown Dreams
Image
In 1974, the screen comes alive with a distinctly charged atmosphere, one where the fading echoes of the old studio system mix with the bold experiments of an emerging cinematic era.

The film unfurls against a backdrop steeped in the aesthetic and ambitions of that time—a period marked by a seismic shift in filmmaking techniques and narrative approaches. The industry, in a state of quiet revolution, offers a stage where the rules of traditional production are questioned and redefined.

At the heart of the narrative lies a desperate producer who devises a plan to secure an insurance payout by engineering a fatal mishap on set. This risky plot centers on the production of a Western, interweaving peril with the delicate art of staging an “accident.” The story’s momentum is driven by a carefully orchestrated gamble, where each attempt to tip fate into the producer’s favor adds layers of tension and dark humor.

‘The Comeback Trail’ Review: Robert De Niro, Tommy Lee Jones and Morgan Freeman Have the Time of Their Lives in a Showbiz Sabotage Comedy
Image
Not unlike an attentive bird who spots a smidgen of sustenance in a pile of cattle dung, director George Gallo and co-scripter Josh Posner’s new comedy retrieves a viable comic premise in the deservedly obscure and irredeemably wretched 1982 comedy “The Comeback Trail.” Unfortunately, their hugely enjoyable remake, in name only, was stuck in distribution limbo for the better part of five years, despite a stellar cast that includes Oscar winners Robert De Niro, Tommy Lee Jones and Morgan Freeman. At long last, the movie recently received an extremely limited U.S. theatrical run and is now available on digital platforms.

Speaking as someone who viewed a screener of the new and improved “Comeback Trail” back in 2020, and has puzzled over why it remained more or less shelved ever since, I am happy to report after a second viewing that the indie production is every bit as funny as I...

'Conclave' Hits Streaming #1 on Peacock After Oscars Snubs
Image
Ralph Fienneswas disappointed at this year’s Oscars, when his highly acclaimed movie Conclavelost out in several big categories to Emilia Pérez, The Brutalist, and Anora. However, the biggest night of the Hollywood awards season has had a huge effect on the movie’s resurgence on Peacock. After being on the platform for over two months, Conclave has jumped straight back into the number one spot on the streamer’s chart.

While there is little doubt that Fiennes, and other Conclave nominees – including the movie itself in the Best Picture category – would have been happier walking away with a statuette or two, the film’s resurrection on streaming as people flock to check out what the movie is all about is a very welcome consolation prize.

Oscars 2025: The Good, The Bad & The Fugly
Image
Whether it was Zoe Saldaña calling out her husband’s beautiful hair during her acceptance speech or June Squibb claiming that she’s really Bill Skarsgård in drag, the 97th Oscars on Sunday were chock-full of good, bag and fugly moments.

Here are all the moments that made us go hmmm.

So Good: Oscar gave a collective hug to fire victims by opening the show with a chill-inducing ode to our beloved L.A. with iconic moments from Rocky III, La La Land, Grand Canyon, La Bamba and The Big Lebowski, followed with gorgeous performances by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.

So bad it was good: It felt a little strange to transition out of such a sentimental opener to the image of “four-time Oscar viewer” Conan O’Brien crawling out of Demi Moore’s corpse.

Despite Its Historical Inaccuracy, This Star-Studded Political Thriller Was One of the Most 1990s’ Popular Films
Image
Released in 1991, Oliver Stone’s political thrillerJFK turned the assassination of President John F. Kennedy into a fast-paced mystery that combined historical events with heavy speculation. With a star-studded cast, JFK asked bold questions about the official story surrounding Jkf’s death, sparking widespread debate. However, while JFK was undeniably popular, it also faced major criticism for its historical inaccuracies.

Despite these flaws, JFK remains one of the most influential films of the 1990s. It reignited interest in the assassination and gave rise to new theories about who was really behind the killing of Kennedy. Its box office success and cultural impact cannot be denied, but the question remains: was JFK a bold cinematic statement or a dangerously misleading piece of historical fiction?

What Is JFK About?

As the name suggests, JFK follows New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison (Kevin Costner) as he reopens an investigation into President John F. Kennedy’s assassination.

The 5 Best Gene Hackman Movies You Never Saw
Image
Given the sad news that Gene Hackman, the most legendary of all actors, has passed away, tributes will (appropriately) be coming in non-stop. After all, he was the greatest of the greats, and the fact that he retired relatively early (back in 2004) adds to his mystique, as he went out at the top of his game. Given his rich legacy of work, everyone will no doubt be offering tributes to his best movies, like Unforgiven, The French Connection, The Royal Tenenbaums, and many more. Here at JoBlo, we’re gonna do something a little different and pay tribute to the star by singling out some of his lesser-seen films, hoping that maybe fans of his find something on this list they haven’t seen before and can enjoy for the first time!

Ralph Fiennes' Chances Of Winning an Academy Award for 'Conclave' Take a Dive
Image
Ralph Fiennes has carved a reputation as one of the greatest actors of a generation, and has been part of both some of the world’s biggest franchises – as M during the last movies of Daniel Craig’s James Bond tenure, and Voldemort in the Harry Potter movies – and quieter independent and intimate movies, such as his newest Oscar contender, Conclave. However, he has never managed to secure an Oscar for his work, and a bizarre bit of misinformation among Academy voters could prevent him from finally receiving his dues at this year’s ceremony.

According to Variety, at least two separate members have admitted to not voting for Fiennes, who is nominated this year in the Best Actor category for his role in Conclave, and has already landed several wins for the part during awards season. While this is not unusual in itself, the reason they did not put...

The Oscars Stopped Being Relevant Long Ago, but if Ralph Fiennes Loses Best Actor We Know How Incompetent the Voters Really Are
Image
The Academy Awards were once the gold standard of cinematic excellence. Since then, they have spiraled into a glittery, self-important popularity contest. Now, merit takes a backseat to politics, nostalgia, and the inexplicable desire to award the most Oscar-bait performance of the year.

It’s a chaotic mix of questionable snubs, undeserving wins, and choices so baffling they make you wonder if the voters are watching the same movies as the rest of us.

Ralph Fiennes, a man who has spent his entire career delivering performances so layered, so mesmerizing, that he should have at least three Oscars on his shelf by now. And yet, despite decades of brilliance, the Academy continues to treat him like a second-tier actor instead of the acting powerhouse he is. But this year? This year should be different.
