When the 2025 Oscars nominations are announced on Jan. 23 at 5:30 a.m. Pt, expect Emilia Pérez to be on top.

According to Gold Derby predictions, the Netflix musical dramedy is poised to receive 11 bids — more than any other contender — including Best Director (Jacques Audiard), Best Actress (Karla Sofía Gascón), and Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña). That would be two fewer than last year’s nominations leader Oppenheimer at 13, but on par with 2022’s Everything Everywhere All at Once at 11 — both of which won Best Picture.

Close behind with 10 forecasted noms is A24’s The Brutalist, starring Best Actor frontrunner Adrien Brody as a Holocaust survivor who tries to live out the American Dream in the 1940s and 1950s. Expect nominations for Best Director (Brady Corbet), Best Supporting Actress (Felicity Jones), and Best Supporting Actor (Guy Pearce), per Gold Derby odds.

Hollywood’s award season has already warmed up the new year; the Golden Globes successfully separated favorites from potential surprises, and nominations for SAG and Critics Choice Awards have already been unveiled. Now, the British Academy Film Awards have followed suit.

While Hollywood is fighting the cataclysmic California wildfires, postponing forthcoming ceremonies and extending Academy Awards submission dates, fortunately, all the way across the Atlantic Ocean, the British Isles face no such threat. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced nominees across 26 categories, recognizing outstanding contributions to cinema.

Conclave emerged the favorite among the 2025 Ee BAFTA Film Awards voters, scoring 12 nominations including Best Film, Director, Leading Actor, and Supporting Actress. Emilia Pérez was close behind with 11 nominations, followed by The Brutalist with nine and Anora, Dune: Part Two, and Wicked with seven.

Overall, 42 films earned BAFTA Film Awards nominations, and 14 of the 24 performance nominees are BAFTA Awards first-timers.

Winners will be announced on February 16th.

Blumhouse Pictures, the kings of horror at the box office for the past decade, didn’t make a big splash at the box office in 2024. This year looks to be much different, starting this weekend with Leigh Whannell’s “Wolf Man.”

According to exhibitors and rival distributors, “Wolf Man” is projected for a 3-day opening in the high teens. With MLK Day included, the Universal release is expected to earn a 4-day opening above $20 million.

This would be a higher opening than any of Blumhouse’s launches in 2024, as their last January release, “Night Swim,” and their September remake of “Speak No Evil” both opened to around $11 million. “Speak No Evil” was Blumhouse’s top film last year with $36.9 million domestic and $75.7 million worldwide.

To be clear, none of Blumhouse’s 2024 films were flops, easily clearing their production budgets which never exceeded $15 million. But 2024 was also only the second year...

Landman, the latest hit series from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan, came to an end with its shocking first season finale on Jan. 12. Bafta has announced the nominations for the Ee British Academy Film Awards in 2025, celebrating the very best in film of the past year. Bafta winner Will Sharpe and former Ee Rising Star winner Mia McKenna-Bruce hosted the announcement via global livestream from the arts charity’s headquarters at 195 Piccadilly, London. The Ee Bafta Film Awards, hosted by David Tennant, will be broadcast on BBC One and iPlayer from London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 16 February. In addition, the Ee Bafta Film Awards will be available across BritBox in North America, the Nordics and Australia, as well as a host of further international broadcasters to be announced. Viewers at home will also have front row seats to the red-carpet arrivals, which will be streamed live on Bafta’s YouTube, featuring interviews with nominees and other special guests. Voting for the Ee Rising Star Award is now open at ee.co.

Conclave and Emilia Pérez led all films with 12 and 11 nominations, respectively. The 2025 BAFTA Film nominees were announced this morning but there was no recognition for high profile movies such as Queer, Challengers, Babygirl, and Paddington In Peru. Meanwhile, musical Wicked was shut out of the Best Film category.

Luca Guadagnino’s duo Queer and Challengers were both Golden Globe nominated, including for leads Daniel Craig and Zendaya, but neither made the cut this morning. Both had made the BAFTA longlist.

With A Real Pain star Will Sharpe and last year’s Rising Star Award winner Mia McKenna Bruce taking on hosting duties, the results are in for the films BAFTA’s 8,100 film awards voters consider the best of 2024.

It’s a lovely afternoon for Conclave and Emilia Pérez, leading the awards with 12 and 11 nominations respectively, and a slightly less lovely afternoon for Daniel Craig (who missed out on a Best Actor nod for Queer) and Denzel Washington, who holds onto his title as a no-time BAFTA-nominee after Gladiator II failed to register with voters.

Among the biggest surprises is the addition of Hugh Grant in the Best Actor category for his creepy-man role in Heretic – together with the three nominations for Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, 2025 is already showing the horror genre much more love than previous years.

Fresh from making Golden Globes history, Karla Sofía Gascón has now become the first openly transgender actress to be nominated for a BAFTA Film Award.

The Spanish performer has been recognized in the Leading Actress category for her role in Emilia Pérez, in which she stars as a Mexican drug kingpin who transitions into a woman.

Leading arthouse sales agency the Match Factory, which is part of Mubi, has appointed Agathe Valentin as sales director, a newly created role. The company’s slate includes Coralie Fargeat’s “The Substance,” starring Demi Moore, which won best screenplay in Cannes and best actress at the Golden Globes.

The appointment comes ahead of the Match Factory’s preparations for Sundance, where the company will premiere “Magic Farm” by Amalia Ulman and Cherien Dabis’ “All That’s Left of You,” as well as for Berlinale, where it will showcase several films.

Actress Margaret Qualley has shared that the prosthetic makeup she wore while shooting “The Substance” caused serious skin damage that took a year to heal.

In a recent “Happy Sad Confused” podcast episode, Qualley told host Josh Horowitz that her skin irritation became so severe that it changed the movie’s shooting schedule and how the cameras were used.

“They had to shoot up my skirt in the beginning credits, with palm trees all around and long lenses from the bottom, because my face was so damaged they couldn’t shoot it anymore,” Qualley said. Director Coralie Fargeat had to use clever camera settings to solve the problem.

Qualley still had skin issues during her next project, “Kinds of Kindness,” directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. The damage helped her play one of the four roles in the movie better than she expected.

The actress, who plays Sue in the body horror film, recently shared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that her skin was damaged for nearly a year after filming wrapped.

“Like, at the end, when they’re shooting up my skirt in the beginning credits, when it’s like the palm trees all around and they have all these long lenses from the bottom, that’s just because my face was so fucked up by that time that they couldn’t, like, shoot my face anymore,” Qualley explained to host Josh Horowitz.

“At the end, when they’re shooting up my skirt in the beginning credits, and it’s like the palm trees all around and they have all these long lenses from the bottom, that’s just because my face was so fucked up,” Qualley said. “They couldn’t shoot my face anymore.”

The acne from the prosthetics lasted long after “The Substance” wrapped and persisted as she began shooting her next film, “Kinds of Kindness,” in which she played four characters: Vivian, Martha, Rebecca and Ruth. Luckily, the acne played to her benefit in the Yorgos Lanthimos drama.
