When the 2025 Oscars nominations are announced on Jan. 23 at 5:30 a.m. Pt, expect Emilia Pérez to be on top.
According to Gold Derby predictions, the Netflix musical dramedy is poised to receive 11 bids — more than any other contender — including Best Director (Jacques Audiard), Best Actress (Karla Sofía Gascón), and Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña). That would be two fewer than last year’s nominations leader Oppenheimer at 13, but on par with 2022’s Everything Everywhere All at Once at 11 — both of which won Best Picture.
Close behind with 10 forecasted noms is A24’s The Brutalist, starring Best Actor frontrunner Adrien Brody as a Holocaust survivor who tries to live out the American Dream in the 1940s and 1950s. Expect nominations for Best Director (Brady Corbet), Best Supporting Actress (Felicity Jones), and Best Supporting Actor (Guy Pearce), per Gold Derby odds.

Conclave Leads Nominations (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Hollywood’s award season has already warmed up the new year; the Golden Globes successfully separated favorites from potential surprises, and nominations for SAG and Critics Choice Awards have already been unveiled. Now, the British Academy Film Awards have followed suit.
While Hollywood is fighting the cataclysmic California wildfires, postponing forthcoming ceremonies and extending Academy Awards submission dates, fortunately, all the way across the Atlantic Ocean, the British Isles face no such threat. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced nominees across 26 categories, recognizing outstanding contributions to cinema.
Doctor Who actor David Tennant, last year’s host, will return to lead the ceremony. This year marks one of the most competitive lineups, with no clear frontrunners and several close races. Conclave leads with 12 nominations, followed closely by Emilia Pérez with 11. Anora director Sean Baker achieved a historic six individual nods,...

Angelina Jolie returned to acting after her MCU stint in Eternals, in Pablo Larraín’s Maria. Her performance as the opera singer Maria Callas has received rave reviews and it even garnered her a Golden Globe nomination. Jolie joined other actresses at The Hollywood Reporter’s Round Table this year.
Jolie revealed that she does not tend to watch her performances after filming them as she does not want to get conscious about her looks and the way she sounds. This habit seems to be common among other actors too, including Jolie’s The Tourist co-star Johnny Depp.

The hit horror movie The Substance took audiences by storm and recently earned lead actress Demi Moore her first Golden Globe at the 2025 Awards. A dark satirical critique of Hollywood’s misogyny toward aging, the film follows a 50-year-old TV star who gets fired for being ‘too old‘. Desperate, she turns to a black-market drug, The Substance, which temporarily transforms her into a younger version of herself – until the cure becomes a nightmare.
An arsenal of cameras and lenses was used to craft the movie’s eerie visuals and distinct vibe, complemented by heavy use of VFX. In this interview, Dit Baptiste Marnière takes us behind the scenes and shares exclusive insights into his workflow.

Blumhouse Pictures, the kings of horror at the box office for the past decade, didn’t make a big splash at the box office in 2024. This year looks to be much different, starting this weekend with Leigh Whannell’s “Wolf Man.”
According to exhibitors and rival distributors, “Wolf Man” is projected for a 3-day opening in the high teens. With MLK Day included, the Universal release is expected to earn a 4-day opening above $20 million.
This would be a higher opening than any of Blumhouse’s launches in 2024, as their last January release, “Night Swim,” and their September remake of “Speak No Evil” both opened to around $11 million. “Speak No Evil” was Blumhouse’s top film last year with $36.9 million domestic and $75.7 million worldwide.
To be clear, none of Blumhouse’s 2024 films were flops, easily clearing their production budgets which never exceeded $15 million. But 2024 was also only the second year...

Warning: Spoilers ahead from the Landman season finale!
Landman, the latest hit series from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan, came to an end with its shocking first season finale on Jan. 12. Fans are still reeling from the evens of the finale, which saw the death of a major character and some big changes that could be in store should Paramount+ renew the breakout drama for a second season.
In the season finale, Jon Hamm's character Monty Miller died due to heart complications from having a heart attack and too many bypass surgeries. Monty's death was confirmed by Landman co-creator Christian Wallace as well as by Hamm in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, in which he explains that additional acting commitments didn't allow more than a one-season deal.
But Hamm's absence and the shuffle of power at M-Tex with Tommy taking over will make room for another character to receive...

Spoiler Alert !!!Warning: Spoilers ahead for Landman Season 1. Read at your own risk—once it’s spoiled, there’s no un-digging it!
“Drama is life with the dull bits cut out” – Alfred Hitchcock nailed it. And if there’s one thing Taylor Sheridan’s Landman delivers, it’s a big, fat serving of drama with every twist and turn. You know that feeling when you bite into a piece of Texas BBQ, and it’s so perfectly tender and smoky that you almost forget to chew? That’s what Landman feels like—a satisfying, slow-burn of a show that you can’t help but savor.

Seven years went from the time when director Coralie Fargeat made her feature directorial debut with a very cool revenge movie that was appropriately titled Revenge – you can read our 8/10 review of the film at This Link – and when she came back with an “explosive feminist take on body horror” called The Substance, which stars Demi Moore (Ghost) and Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood). Fargeat’s second movie was worth the wait (you can read our 9/10 review Here), and has been streaming on the Mubi service since Halloween. Qualley wore some major prosthetic makeup for some sequences in the film – and during a new interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, she revealed that it took a year for her skin to recover from the irritation caused by those prosthetics.

The 2025 BAFTA nominations had its share of snubs and surprises, some less so than others (Denzel Washington missing again is just par for the course now). The final televised precursor — and an industry one to boot — made the acting categories even messier while ostensibly taking other contenders out of the running. Here’s where we’re at with all four races post-bafta nominations.
Best Actor
Golden Globe, Critics Choice, SAG and BAFTA nominations: Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave)
Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and SAG nominations: Daniel Craig (Queer)
Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and BAFTA nominations: Hugh Grant (Heretic)
Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations: Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice)
Assuming the top four are in — as many have all season, and the quartet has not missed a beat — that leaves one spot up for grabs. Craig has occupied that spot in the odds all season long,...

Roll up, awards buffs: shiny trophy season is hotting up, with BAFTA having announced its nominees for this year’s ceremony. And fittingly, it seems BAFTA members might have gathered in robes to submit their votes on little white slips of paper: papal thriller Conclave is the most-nominated film this year, receiving 12 nods including Best Film, Director for Edward Berger, Leading Actor for Ralph Fiennes, Supporting Actress for Isabella Rossellini, Adapted Screenplay and more. Send up the white smoke, people.
Hot on Conclave’s heels is Emilia Pérez, Jacques Audiard’s genre-defying crime-thriller-musical-character-drama, in which a cartel boss undergoes gender-reassignment surgery to begin her new life. The film is nominated in 11 categories. Audiard is nominated for Director, while the film itself is up for Best Film, Adapted Screenplay, Film Not In The English Language. Emilia herself, Karla Sofía Gascón, is up for Leading Actress, with Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña...

Wicked, Kneecap, Gladiator II star Denzel Washington, Sing Sing breakout Clarence Maclin, Queer lead Daniel Craig, and The Substance star Margaret Qualley were among the biggest snubs and surprises after the 78th annual BAFTA Awards nominations were announced on Wednesday.
Conclave and Emilia Pérez led all films with 12 and 11 nominations, respectively. Most of the expected Oscar contenders also landed predicted bids with British Academy of Film and Television Arts voters (the complete list of nominees is here). However, the BAFTA Awards snubs and surprises were slightly scooped by the BAFTA Awards themselves. Earlier this month, the BAFTA Awards revealed this year’s longlists in each category, with Netflix’s Emilia Pérez and Focus Features’ Conclave pacing the field with, respectively, 15 and 14 longlist mentions. Other contenders that performed well on the longlists included The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, and The Substance. The 2025 BAFTA Film Awards nominations are in – here’s a look at the snubs and the snub-ies.
With A Real Pain star Will Sharpe and last year’s Rising Star Award winner Mia McKenna Bruce taking on hosting duties, the results are in for the films BAFTA’s 8,100 film awards voters consider the best of 2024.
It’s a lovely afternoon for Conclave and Emilia Pérez, leading the awards with 12 and 11 nominations respectively, and a slightly less lovely afternoon for Daniel Craig (who missed out on a Best Actor nod for Queer) and Denzel Washington, who holds onto his title as a no-time BAFTA-nominee after Gladiator II failed to register with voters.
Among the biggest surprises is the addition of Hugh Grant in the Best Actor category for his creepy-man role in Heretic – together with the three nominations for Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, 2025 is already showing the horror genre much more love than previous years.

“Conclave” and “Emilia Pérez” lead this year’s BAFTA Film Awards nominations, heading up a diverse mix of talent and titles in a competition where, for the first time in years, there’s no clear favorite in any of the major categories.
“The Brutalist,” “Anora,” “Dune: Part Two” “Wicked” and “A Complete Unknown” are also very much in contention, while the likes of Demi Moore (“The Substance”), Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”), Jeremy Strong (“The Apprentice”), Ariana Grande (“Wicked”), Selena Gomez (“Emilia Pérez”), Mikey Madison (“Anora”), Kieran Culkin (“A Real Pain”), Yura Borisov (“Anora”), Isabella Rossellini (“Conclave”), Zoe Saldaña (“Emilia Pérez”) and Guy Pearce (“The Brutalist”) are among the 12 of 24 nominated performers — both established and rising — getting their very first BAFTA nod.

Let’s face it: we’ve all sat through those awkward, cringe-worthy moments in TV shows or movies, the ones that make you want to bury your head in a pillow and pretend you didn’t see it. Taylor Sheridan’s Landman serves up plenty of them, particularly when it comes to the portrayal of female characters like Ainsley Norris (played by Michelle Randolph), who finds herself in some pretty uncomfortable situations, especially with her father, Tommy (Billy Bob Thornton).

From awkward conversations about her s*x life to moments that feel just a little too intrusive, Landman seems determined to make us squirm. But what if these moments, rather than being just plain creepy, are part of something much bigger? A deeper exploration of the way we view sexuality?

Actress Margaret Qualley has shared that the prosthetic makeup she wore while shooting “The Substance” caused serious skin damage that took a year to heal.
In a recent “Happy Sad Confused” podcast episode, Qualley told host Josh Horowitz that her skin irritation became so severe that it changed the movie’s shooting schedule and how the cameras were used.
“They had to shoot up my skirt in the beginning credits, with palm trees all around and long lenses from the bottom, because my face was so damaged they couldn’t shoot it anymore,” Qualley said. Director Coralie Fargeat had to use clever camera settings to solve the problem.
Qualley still had skin issues during her next project, “Kinds of Kindness,” directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. The damage helped her play one of the four roles in the movie better than she expected.

In a recent interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Margaret Qualley said it took “a year” for her skin to recover from the irritation caused by the face prosthetics used in “The Substance.” The damage was so bad that director Coralie Fargeat had to frame out her face in certain shots.
“At the end, when they’re shooting up my skirt in the beginning credits, and it’s like the palm trees all around and they have all these long lenses from the bottom, that’s just because my face was so fucked up,” Qualley said. “They couldn’t shoot my face anymore.”
The acne from the prosthetics lasted long after “The Substance” wrapped and persisted as she began shooting her next film, “Kinds of Kindness,” in which she played four characters: Vivian, Martha, Rebecca and Ruth. Luckily, the acne played to her benefit in the Yorgos Lanthimos drama.
