"Shrek" was a very important movie in animation history. It provided DreamWorks with its first true breakthrough hit, taking in $492 million in 2001. It ensured that Disney would have meaningful competition in the animation space for years to come, which has only been furthered in recent years with the dominance of Illumination in the marketplace. For DreamWorks though, it birthed what would become the studio's flagship franchise, one that has generated more than $3 billion since its inception. That franchise's biggest moment came in 2004 when "Shrek 2" hit theaters.
The animation house founded by former Disney executive Jeffrey Katzenberg hit a home run by pairing Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy as Shrek and Donkey in the first film, in no small part thanks to the stellar supporting cast.

You may recall that this January, Sir Elton John became the 19th person ever to win the coveted Egot by claiming his first Emmy. But what you may be less familiar with is the fact that Emma Stone can become just the 20th actress (and the 25th entertainer overall) to claim an Eggocc if she triumphs in the race for the Best Drama Actress prize at this year’s Emmy Awards for her performance in the Paramount+/Showtime series “The Curse.” Too, Robert Downey Jr. is poised to be only the sixth actor to claim an Eggocc should he take home the Emmy prize in September for Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor for his work in the HBO limited series “The Sympathizer.”

It is absolutely wild to think that Robin Williams got passed over for the part of Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter series because he wasn’t British! Now, while David Thewlis undoubtedly did justice to the character, one can’t help but wonder what kind of magic Williams could have brought to the role. Because one can never accept Williams to be a wrong choice for anything! The Harry Potter crew really missed out on something special with that one silly rule.

Robin Williams, known for his extensive Hollywood career and a string of iconic roles, is often regarded as one of the few actors universally loved in the industry. Many would assume that Williams could land any role he desires.
However, that wasn’t the case when he wanted to enter the Harry Potter series.

There are plenty of films dealing with dark themes in the illustrious filmography of Steven Spielberg. Prior to his success with Saving Private Ryan, Amistad, or Bridge of Spies, the Ohio-born filmmaker, 77, addressed a subject that was more personal to him.
Spielberg helmed the epic historical drama Schindler’s List in the same year (1993), when he broke box office records with Jurassic Park. Adapted from the 1982 novel Schindler’s Ark by Thomas Keneally, the former relates the terrifying true story of German industrialist Oskar Schindler, who employed thousands of Jews during World War II to keep them safe from the Nazi party’s persecution.

Starring Liam Neeson and Ben Kingsley, the film was a box office hit that won Best Picture at the Academy Awards and gave Spielberg his first Best Director Oscar. However, it is also acknowledged for having introduced the Holocaust to a larger public.

Steven Spielberg has been behind the lens of one too many great works in the history of Hollywood, be it from the science fiction genre or the action-adventure one. Of all those masterpieces, his 1993 war documentary Schindler’s List holds a position no other project could steal from it. If anything, it is the master of masterpieces themselves, and the film’s terrific reviews only further prove this.

One of Hollywood’s most controversial figures, Harvey Weinstein, reportedly manipulated Good Will Hunting’s theatrical run. He did the most Harvey Weinstein thing possible, to allegedly undercut Robin Williams’ contractual terms. This was driven by what appeared to be pure greed, or that is what Kevin Smith would like to believe.

Netflix’s true crime series Homicide: New York’s first installment, “Carnegie Deli Massacre,” opens with the brutal murders of Jennifer Stahl, Charles “Trey” Helliwell, and Stephen King. It's a testament to Disney's branding that mainstream audiences don't necessarily know who directed or starred in some of their better-known movies. Although many have seen the studio's 1950 animated feature "Cinderella," most audiences wouldn't be able to tell you that Ilene Woods played the title character, or that Wilfred Jackson, Hamilton Luske, and Clyde Geronimi directed the film. Disney's "Aladdin" changed that with the casting of Robin Williams as the Genie. And the trend of hiring known screen celebrities, often not voice actors, to sell an animated feature to a broad audience went to a whole other level in the wake of DreamWorks' "Shrek." The advent of the internet also helped certain actresses become known among Disney fans. Nowadays, many adults know the names of the actresses who played characters like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, or Ariel the Mermaid.
By Disney's own selection, there are thirteen "official" Disney Princesses: Snow White,...

Denis Villeneuve and Timothée Chalamet have had quite the ride together in the wild world of filmmaking. They were all over the headlines for teaming up in the Dune series, but did you know that the 56-year-old once said no to the actor?
Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides in Dune: Part Two
He thought Chalamet didn’t fit the bill for a role in Prisoners because of his physique. Yet, destiny worked in mysterious ways, and they ended up collaborating anyway. It was a classic Hollywood tale of ups and downs, where even big names like them faced rejection and tough competition for the spotlight.

The Ghostbusters franchise has never seen complete success in its tenure. While the original Ghostbusters starring Bill Murray has been a cult classic that has been paid tribute to and has been parodied multiple times over the years, the subsequent films have been a hit or miss. It hit a new low with the all-female reboot starring prominent SNL alumni.
However, the franchise seems to have gone further down the hole as its latest entry Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire gets the franchise’s worst Rotten Tomatoes score. The film came on the heels of the well-received Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which starred Paul Rudd and a new cast. Despite the presence of the beloved characters and the return of the Og Ghostbusters, the new film seems to be unimpressive. However, fans still seem to be excited.

The spinach-guzzling, Brutus-bashing sailor Popeye is set to return in a live action feature-length film, according to reports.
For those of us of a certain generation, Popeye is an unforgettable figure. He was a mainstay of Saturday morning cartoons, taught us that pipe smoking and violence were acceptable choices (ahem) and perhaps most impactful of all, he ruined spinach for the rest of our lives.
Anybody growing up with Popeye on their screens must get mildly disappointed every time they munch on some spinach and their muscles don’t immediately pop out to incredible proportions.
As well as featuring in regular cartoon appearances, the character also got the movie treatment all the way back in 1980. The pipe-chewing sailor was bought into live action by none other than director Robert Altman and played by the wonderful Robin Williams. The live-action movies based on comic book storylines or animated characters are either hugely successful or a massive disappointment as we have witnessed in the recent adaptations. It seems like we’re all set to witness another adaptation of a very popular cartoon character, as it was recently announced that Michael Caleo is allegedly working on a live-action adaptation of Popeye the Sailor Man.

Popeye is one of the most popular cartoon characters the world has ever seen and many generations grew up watching the animated series based on the popular sailor man who gained superhuman strength by eating Spinach. The character even celebrated its 95th anniversary earlier this year as it was first released in the 1929 comic Thimble Theater.

Peter Weir is easily regarded as one of the most legendary filmmakers in Hollywood, with masterpieces that have garnered several nods of major accolades. Also the mastermind behind Robin Williams’ critically acclaimed 1989 comedy thriller Dead Poets Society, he has led an unparalleled career in the entertainment industry.

The 1980 Robert Altman film Popeye, which gave Robin Williams his first starring role, is kind of a divisive film. It made an admirably grand attempt at adapting the cartoon into a live-action hyper-reality. Not unlike Warren Beatty’s Dick Tracy. However, many find the Popeye film hard to swallow and the film was panned by critics. The 1920s cartoon tough guy who likes his spinach would remain somewhat relevant as a mascot here and there. In the 90s, the now-defunct regional theater chain, Dickinson Theaters, had featured the Sailor Man, his girlfriend Olive Oyl and even Bluto in some ads and some promotional merchandise. However, for the most part, Popeye is mostly known to the masses through reputation.
The character would celebrate his 95th anniversary this year and Variety now reports that there will now be a new live-action adaptation of the Popeye character set for release. According to Variety,...

It has been 14 years since his last movie, The Way Back, was released. That was his 14th movie and from how things stand now, it will be his last. Namely, legendary Australian filmmaker and director, Peter Weir, has confirmed that he has definitely retired from filmmaking as he has no more energy to make movies. This shouldn’t come as a major shock, as the director is turning 80 in August this year, and with what he has done so far, he has earned the right to rest.
This was confirmed during a discussion with the audience in Paris, as part of the Festival de la Cinémathèque, where he said:
“Why did I stop directing? Because, quite simply, I have no more energy. I’ve stopped filmmaking in 2020. It was time for me. I felt I want to leave the gambling table, so I no longer direct. But before that, occasionally...

Legendary comic book and cartoon character Popeye the Sailor is once again coming to the big screen, as Chernin Entertainment and King Features officially confirm that a big-budged live-action adaptation is in the works. This will be the first time that the character has been revisited in a live-action format since the late Robin Williams played Popeye in the 1980 movie. This has been confirmed exclusively by Variety, as the magazine reported on the movie being in the works.
As stated, Chernin Entertainment and King Features are working on the movie and will probably be in charge of its production and distribution, securing a worldwide theatrical distribution. So far, there aren’t many details available, but the movie is supposedly going to be a big-budget feature with Michael Caleo attached as the screenwriter as of the time of writing. At the inaugural Academy Awards in 1929, native Pennsylvanian Janet Gaynor made history as the first American-born performer to win an Oscar by taking the Best Actress prize for her body of work in “7th Heaven,” “Street Angel,” and “Sunrise.” Over the subsequent 95 years, 215 more thespians originating from the United States won the academy’s favor, meaning the country has now produced 68.1% of all individual acting Oscar recipients. Considering the last decade alone, the rate of such winners is even higher, at 70.3%.
At this point, 96.8% of American-born acting Oscar victors have hailed from one of 34 actual states. Of those constituting the remainder, three originated from the federal District of Columbia, while four were born in the territory of Puerto Rico. Ghostbusters is one of the most iconic film series of all time. Dominating cinema in the 80s, the series integrated itself into the very bones of popular culture at the time and has stuck around ever since. Stiller was just two feature films into his directorial career when the Oscar-winning script of Good Will Hunting was sent to him. Gerald M. “Jerry” Levin, the former CEO of Time Warner who helped oversee its calamitous merger with AOL, died Wednesday in Long Beach, CA. He was 84.
His death was confirmed to The New York Times by his grandchild, Jake Maia Arlow. Levin had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease but no details about his death were shared.
Once described as one of the most powerful media executives in the world, Levin with Steve Case orchestrated the ruinous merger of AOL and Time Warner in 2000. At the time, Time Warner was the world’s largest media company while AOL was a behemoth in its own right. But the deal would go down among the worst in history, and Levin resigned from the company in 2002.
“He saw the merger with AOL as making Time Warner digital by injection,” Richard Parsons, who succeeded Levin at Time Warner, told the Nyt. “What AOL brought...

Jumanji is a film that had its fair share of jumpscares but was overall a beloved film that several grown-ups today remember watching fondly. However, a theory has been making the rounds on Reddit, which paints the entire film in a much darker and sinister light.
Robin Williams in Jumanji (1995)
According to the theory, Jumanji as a game has a lot more dire consequences than we realize. This stems from the fact that when the game ends in the present, Alan and Sarah find themselves back in the past, back to when they started the game. Not only that, but they also remember everything that transpired in the timeline, even though it has never occurred.
Alan and Sarah remember everything
Robin Williams, Bradley Pierce, and Kirsten Dunst in Jumanji
The protagonist of Jumanji, Alan Parish, played by Robin Williams, started the game in 1969 with his love interest Sarah. The game...

Billy Crystal is famed as an actor, stand-up comic, writer, producer, director, television host and avid New York Yankees fan. He is also known for his nine stints as host of the Academy Awards, a number that is second only to Bob Hope‘s 18. Although Crystal will always be associated with Oscar, the irony is that he has never been nominated for an Oscar himself.
Still, that doesn’t mean he’s any stranger to awards. Crystal has been nominated for two Grammy Awards and hosted the show three times. He won a special Tony Award in 2005 for his one-man show “700 Sundays” and earned two Emmy nominations for the television adaptation of that production. In fact, Crystal, who first broke TV taboos playing a gay character on ABC’s “Soap” in the 1970s, has along the way received 24 Emmy nominations, winning six, including two for hosting the Oscar ceremony.
