Avengers: Doomsday Set Photo Reveals A Birds-Eye View Of A Downed Sentinel - Possible Spoilers
Image
Earlier this week, we got a first look at what appeared to be a downed Sentinel on the set of Avengers: Doomsday. Now, we have a birds-eye view offering a clearer shot at the mutant-hunting robot's legs (in what's believed to be the X-Mansion's grounds).

We also have reason to believe that we'll see the remains of more than one Sentinel, as you can see below.

Unfortunately, the legs are still covered up, but the photographer who took these shots has confirmed that the footprints they've seen elsewhere on set match the Sentinel design from the comics.

Sentinels attacking the X-Men's home is par for the course in the comics, so this could be part of a major battle we'll see in the movie or the fallout from a previous battle. We also wouldn't discount the possibility of this being a Danger Room training exercise meant to show us what...

Colombia Is Thriving, But Locals Worry About Tariffs
Image
For Juan Pablo Solano and his production company Jaguar Bite, making movies like the Paul Walter Hauser starrer The Luckiest Man in America, directed by Bogotá native Samir Oliveros, or TV series like the Don Cheadle-directed The Big Cigar in Colombia is a way of life. However, proposed U.S. tariffs on audiovisual content could drastically affect the industry that helped cultivate his career.

“Jaguar Bite lives through the international productions that come into the country. Eighty to 90 percent of them are from the U.S.,” he says of his company, founded in 2018. “When I heard about the tariffs, I thought about those movies that probably won’t be made anymore. We make certain films that in the U.S. would be impossible to make because the cost doesn’t allow them to exist — independent films that need to find alternatives on where to shoot.”

One such film is...

Michael Keaton Committed a Mark Ruffalo Level Mistake Before the Release of His Batman Movie
Image
If you are a Marvel fan, it is common knowledge that Mark Ruffalo is not to be trusted when it comes to promotional stuff. Only slightly better than the ‘mega spoiler’ Tom Holland, Ruffalo has had a history of spoiling MCU films during press tours and more.

If the DC faction has somebody equivalent to Ruffalo, it is the legend Michael Keaton, who starred in the 1989 film Batman. The actor infamously committed a Ruffalo-level mistake when he spoiled the plot of the film a night before the film’s premiere.

Upcoming Comic Convention Appearance Leads To Speculation About Brie Larson's Avengers: Doomsday Role
Image
As exciting as it was to see Marvel Studios reveal the cast of Avengers: Doomsday at the end of March, even more intriguing for fans was who didn't get a mention.

There was no Hugh Jackman, Tom Holland, Ryan Reynolds, or Elizabeth Olsen (to name just a handful of absentees), prompting speculation about whether they're being kept under wraps or perhaps saved for Avengers: Secret Wars.

Comic Con Liverpool has announced that Captain Marvel star Brie Larson is the headline guest at its November show, leaving many to wonder whether the Oscar-winner will be in the UK at the time to shoot Avengers: Doomsday.

Adding further fuel to the fire is the fact that pretty much the entire Ahsoka cast attended last weekend's Comic Con Liverpool event, and they're all currently in the UK working on season 2.

While it may be a coincidence, it does seem likely that Larson will...

Captain Planet No. 1 is the beginning of something outstanding
Image
When you think of Captain Planet and The Planeteers, what comes to mind? Sadly, instead of the cartoon, the hilarious Don Cheadle sketch is probably the first thing you think of. It’s not your fault; it's been decades since the animated series debuted. Thankfully, David Pepose (Cable: Love and Chrome) will change that. He’s bringing his love of older cartoons like Space Ghost and giving comic book fans Captain Planet. This writer has read the first issue, and it’s fantastic.

You’ll fall in love with Captain Planet right from the beginning. Not because he saves Gaia with his extraordinary powers or that he makes jokes (though that doesn’t hurt). It's because he doesn’t like bullies. And, despite his aforementioned superpowers, he has the same weaknesses as he did in the cartoon. He can be taken down with pollutants. In this case, he's shot with bullets made from depleted uranium.

Daredevil Star Charlie Cox Breaks His Silence On Not Being Included In Avengers: Doomsday Cast Reveal
Image
Marvel Studios delivered plenty of exciting surprises during the Avengers: Doomsday cast reveal, including the return of some familiar faces from 20th Century Fox's X-Men franchise. There were some huge omissions, though, and even with production underway, it feels like this ensemble is far from complete.

While Kevin Feige has confirmed it wasn't the full cast, one of the most disappointing omissions was Daredevil: Born Again star Charlie Cox.

Talking to Collider, the actor was asked about not getting a chair and replied, "It’s not there, is it? [Laughs] Listen, the way that information gets to us is the same way that it gets to everyone else normally. At least historically, that's been the case. Someone sent me the link. I looked for my name. It's not there. So, maybe one day [Laughs]."

It's a real shame that Cox won't be given the chance to assemble alongside the rest of Earth's Mightiest Heroes,...

Avengers: Doomsday BTS Cast Photo May Reveal Robert Downey Jr.'s Look As McU's Victor Von Doom
Image
Avengers: Doomsday started shooting in the UK earlier this week, and the cast just assembled for a screening of Thunderbolts*.

Shang-Chi actor Simu Liu was the first to share a photo on social media, and fans were quick to point out that he's likely revealed Robert Downey Jr.'s look for his role as the McU's Victor Von Doom.

The actor—thankfully—isn't rocking Tony Stark's trademark goatee and instead has short grey hair and no beard whatsoever. Of course, if the Russo Brothers are doing it right, we either won't see Doctor Doom's face or, if we do, it will be hideously scarred.

However, if Doom wins the day, then he may heal his face and unmask in Avengers: Secret Wars. That would differ from the comics where, even as "God" on Battleworld, he was unable to fix his scars, with Mister Fantastic doing so when he put the Multiverse back together.

Avengers: Doomsday (2026)
Rumor: Are these the remaining Avengers: Doomsday cast members?
Avengers: Doomsday (2026)
Last month, the Marvel Studios social media accounts started live-streaming a video they labeled as an all-caps Announcement. The video showed a soundstage where, one by one, chairs reserved for actors were revealed, with a new chair coming into view every 10 minutes or so. As it turns out, this was a very long and slow way of revealing (a large chunk of) the cast of Avengers: Doomsday, which is now in production and aiming for a May 1, 2026 theatrical release. The names of twenty-seven cast members were shown that day, with Marvel teasing, “There’s always room for more…” With cameras now rolling, we’ve been waiting to see if they’ll announce the rest of the cast list with more chair backs, or they’ll find a different way to do it. And while we wait, industry journalist Jeff Sneider of The InSneider has been sent a list that his...

The Best New Streaming Comedy Of 2025 Hates AI As Much As You Do
Image
This article contains spoilers for "The Studio" episode 7, "Casting."

I try to avoid hyperbolic hot takes, but the more time goes on, the more I'm starting to think that Seth Rogen truly is one of the most brilliant comedians to ever do it. He broke into the mainstream in the 2000s thanks to projects like "Superbad" and "Knocked Up", but as the "Freaks and Geeks" alum has grown, his comedy has evolved to an incomparable level. He currently executive produces and stars on Francesca Delbanco & Nicholas Stoller's Apple TV+ series "Platonic," which very well might be the smartest show about disaster millennials failing to accept the realities of their societal roles as adults. But his true masterpiece is the cringe-comedy Hollywood satire "The Studio" (also on Apple TV+), co-created with frequent collaborator Evan Goldberg along with Alex Gregory, Peter Huyck, and Frida Perez.

We at /Film have been loving "The Studio,...

How to watch the Captain America movies in order (including the Avengers)
Image
The Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise is the most successful in Hollywood history. It has grossed over $31 billion at the box office and its legacy will continue in the years ahead, with plenty of exciting titles on the horizon. From the Infinity Saga to the Multiverse Saga and beyond, fans are loving what the MCU is producing.

There are countless beloved heroes in the franchise, but Captain America might just be the most important of all. The Star-Spangled Man With A Plan is, after all, the first Avenger, so it makes sense that he be at the center of the franchise - and he was, for the longest time. As one of the leaders of the Avengers and a pop-culture legend even within the fictitious world of the franchise, Chris Evans' Steve Rogers was a fixture of the MCU until 2019's Avengers: Endgame when he handed the shield over to longtime friend,...

Chris Evans’ Captain America Tried to Kill Teenager Spider-Man of Tom Holland in Civil War: Here Is Why This Allegation Doesn’t Make Sense
Image
Captain America: Civil War remains one of the most beloved entries in the MCU, having one of the best fight sequences featuring multiple heroes. In the film’s climactic airport battle sequence, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man faces Chris Evans’ Captain America, leading to a short fight which the latter easily wins.

Even years after the film’s release, many fans continue to argue that Captain America might have killed a teenage Spider-Man when he dropped a container on top of the younger hero. However, the allegations make no sense upon watching the movie closely, and here is why Captain America was well aware of Spider-Man’s strength.

5 Massive Threats Marvel’s Thunderbolts* Is Facing That Could Derail Its Box Office
Image
Alright, let’s talk about Thunderbolts*, Marvel’s big team-up movie that’s kinda like The Suicide Squad but dressed in MCU seriousness. Fans are hyped because hey, it’s Marvel, and even with a few recent duds, the faithful are still holding onto hope. And yeah, post-Deadpool & Wolverine, the excitement meter’s rising again.

Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, and Florence Pugh in Thunderbolts* (Credits- Marvel)

But here’s the thing: Thunderbolts* is walking on a pretty wobbly tightrope. It’s got a stacked cast of morally grey misfits like Bucky and Yelena, a dark, edgy vibe, and big crossover energy, yet there’s this lingering feeling that Marvel might’ve tossed in a few too many wild cards. Someone really thought it was a great idea to throw Sentry, a dude with the power of a million exploding suns, into a squad full of glorified super spies.

Iron Man 2 Was Not the Biggest Fumble of War Machine Terrence Howard After Rdj Beef, It Was Beyoncé

Terrence Howard, the original War Machine, made a solid splash in the first Iron Man movie and seemed set for a major MCU journey until things took a sudden detour. Since then, he’s become known less for superhero roles and more for stirring the pot with his wild science theories and bold takes on reality.

But, funny enough, missing out on Iron Man 2 might not be his biggest regret. What really must sting is not shooting his shot with Beyoncé. Here’s how that went down!

Terrence Howard in Iron Man / Credits: Marvel Studios Terrence Howard’s biggest regret is missing his chance with Beyoncé!

Terrence Howard Divorced the Same Woman Twice Before Turning His Life Around With Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man
Image
You know what they say, “life’s a series of bumps, bruises, and breakthroughs.” And when it comes to Hollywood, few stories prove this more than the journeys of Terrence Howard and Robert Downey Jr. These two actors’ paths intersected at a pivotal point in Iron Man (2008), but their personal and professional lives have been anything but easy sailing.

Howard’s early life was marred by relationship turbulence, with two divorces from Lori McCommas before 2007. Yet, amid that chaos, he snagged the role of James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes in Iron Man. But a contract dispute led to him being replaced by Don Cheadle.

Michelle Williams at an event for The Oscars (2017)
Michelle Williams appeared on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen this week, revisiting her experience filming Brokeback Mountain and reflecting on the response the movie received during its 2005 release. While promoting her upcoming FX series Dying for Sex, Williams responded to Cohen’s comments about the film’s lasting effect.

Cohen opened the conversation by expressing how much the film meant to him personally. “May I gush to you about what an important movie Brokeback Mountain was to me, and it is still I think in my top two movies of all time,” he said. He asked Williams whether she sensed its cultural weight while working on it. Williams responded, “Yes, because people were so open about it.”

She spoke about her experience during the press tour, saying, “I just remember doing the junket and you don’t get an opportunity to see a lot of grown men cry.

Michelle Williams Shades ‘Crash’ for Taking ‘Brokeback Mountain’ Best Picture Win: ‘I Mean, What Was Crash?’ | Video
Image
Michelle Williams swung by “Watch What Happens Live” on Thursday and learning that “Brokeback Mountain” — the 2005 cowboy romance that earned her her first Oscar nomination — is one of host Andy Cohen’s favorite movies, took part in some light ribbing of the often-maligned race drama that beat it at the Oscars for Best Picture, “Crash.”

“I was very upset about the Best Picture loss,” Cohen said. “I mean, ‘Crash’? Is that what won?”

“I mean, what was ‘Crash’?” Williams questioned slyly.

Cohen, energized by the light shade, responded: “Right, thank you! By the way, who’s talking about ‘Crash’ right now? I hear a pin drop. Yes, very upset.”

The conversation began with Williams, visiting the Bravo talk show studio in promotion of her new FX sex dramedy “Dying for Sex,” reflecting on the significance “Brokeback Mountain” had at the time of its release for telling a gay love story...

Michelle Williams on ‘Brokeback Mountain’ Losing Best Picture at the Oscars: ‘What Was ‘Crash’?’
Image
Michelle Williams is still puzzled 20 years later by “Crash” beating out “Brokeback Mountain” for Best Picture. Williams said during “Watch What Happens Live!” (in the below video) while promoting series “Dying for Sex” that she is baffled by even the plot of “Crash.”

Paul Haggis wrote and directed the ensemble race drama that starred Sandra Bullock, Don Cheadle, Matt Dillon, Jennifer Esposito, William Fichtner, and Brendan Fraser. (Haggis was later found liable on three counts of rape and sexual abuse in 2022.) “Crash” won Best Picture at the 2006 Oscars, despite Ang Lee’s queer Western romance “Brokeback Mountain” having already won Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Original Score.

“Brokeback Mountain” starred Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger as two closeted cowboys who leave their wives, played by Anne Hathaway and Williams, for a few days every few years. The film was adapted from Annie Proulx’s novella by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana.

I’m Hopeful These 10 Marvel Characters Won’t Be Part of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Image
Marvel just dropped the cast list for Avengers: Doomsday, and, well, it was a lot to take in. In a five-hour live stream on YouTube that felt like a Yoko Ono performance piece and a test for even the most patient fans (as interesting as watching paint dry), an endless row of empty chairs slowly gained name tags – Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, and on and on it went. One by one, names appeared, some expected, some not as much, until Robert Downey Jr. showed up, shut it down, and left me with more questions than answers.

The 27 confirmed names did not have all of the usual suspects but focused on a few returning Avengers, the Thunderbolts, the new Fantastic Four, and, most surprisingly, the classic X-Men from the Fox era. Channing Tatum’s Gambit, a character that has spent more time in development hell than on-screen, is somehow in the mix,...

Did Marvel Studios Quietly Cancel This Phase 6 Iron Man Spinoff Movie?
Image
Armor Wars has long been announced to arrive in the McU's Phase 6 as an Iron Man spin-off, but after years of production not starting, many fans are wondering if Marvel Studios have canceled the project altogether.

Don Cheadle's James Rhodes (War Machine) has been a staple of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2008's Iron Man. His character last appeared in 2023's Secret Invasion, when he was revealed to be trapped in a Skrull prison while a Skrull named Raava pretended to be Rhodey.

How Mickey Rourke Really Felt About Working With Marvel On Iron Man 2
Image
Jon Favreau's "Iron Man 2" is the third film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but really it was the first. Favreau's "Iron Man" from two years before was a Paramount production, but wasn't yet part of any grand plan to interconnect the characters from Marvel's "Avengers" comics. Its post-credits stinger featuring Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury was, Favreau has said, just meant to be a cute wink to fans rather than a statement of intent. Likewise, Louis Leterrier's "The Incredible Hulk" from the same year, while boasting a fun cameo from "Iron Man" actor Robert Downey Jr., wasn't yet tied to any broad corporate plans. (It's since gotten a sequel of sorts in the form of "Captain America: Brave New World.") By 2009, however, Disney had purchased Marvel and put the MCU into production in earnest, starting with "Iron Man 2."

Ask any MCU fan, however, and they...

"Avengers: Doomsday' Cast Has MCU Fans Wondering Where Spider-Man Is
Image
Fans of the MCU had plenty to celebrate when Marvel Studios officially announced who would be joining Robert Downey Jr. in the cast of Avengers: Doomsday. Most notably, Chris Hemsworth will return as Thor along with several actors who starred in either Avengers: Infinity War and/or Avengers: Endgame, including Paul Rudd, Sebastian Stan, and Tom Hiddleston. However, many people’s Spider-Senses undoubtedly tingled over the absence of several prominent Marvel Cinematic Universe contributors who were not included in the casting news. For instance, one YouTuber was quick to point out in the announcement video’s comments that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man didn’t make the cut. @0Sniix wrote:

"Where is Tom Holland' we all say in unison."

Obviously, Holland’s absence in Doomsday is easily explainable, and he will likely join up with the others in 2027’s follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars. MCU fans know that Peter Parker (Holland) had...

Every Major Marvel Character Left Out Of The Avengers: Doomsday Cast Announcement
Image
It was a very big day for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and also potentially a bit of a boring one for those who decided to watch all five-plus hours of a livestream that boiled down to slowly revealing names of actors on chairs. Be that as it may, the livestream in question revealed the massive cast of next year's "Avengers: Doomsday." Directed by Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, of "Infinity War" and "Endgame" fame, this movie promises to be a big, multiversal affair.

The cast includes actors from just about every era of Marvel on the big screen, even before the MCU was even a thing. That includes many of the "X-Men" stars of old. With a cast this huge, it makes it all the more intriguing to examine the actors who weren't part of the announcement. Despite the fact that Marvel revealed a list of nearly 30 names,...

Every Steven Soderbergh Movie, Ranked
Image
Steven Soderbergh has done everything, from heist flicks to artsy experiments and everything in between. With a decades-spanning career, this Oscar-winning director has made films that are as wildly diverse as they are memorable. Whether it’s the sleek charm of Ocean’s Eleven or the gritty realness of Traffic, Soderbergh has a knack for keeping us guessing. One minute, he’s giving us big-budget blockbusters; the next, he’s diving headfirst into indie territory with handheld cameras and tiny crews. Who does that? Steven Soderbergh, that’s who.

Ranking the movies of the Swiss Army knife of filmmakers feels almost unfair because each one carries its own unique vibe. From star-studded casts to experimental narratives, there’s always something surprising in his work. Love action-packed thrillers? He’s got you covered. Prefer something slow, cerebral, and artsy? He’s got those, too. And let’s not forget his playful, offbeat...

Jamie Foxx Recalls "Eerie" Conversation Before His Near-Death Experience
Image
Jamie Foxx talked a lot about his recent near-death experience in his Netflix specialWhat Had Happened Was, but the one thing he didn’t mention was an "eerie" conversation he had with his people right before he nearly died back in 2023. Fox suffered a brain bleed that led to a stroke whilst in the midst of shooting Back in Action alongside Cameron Diaz, and at the time, no one was sure that the celebrated actor and comedian would pull through.

Speaking with People while promoting the Apple TV+ documentary Number One on the Call Sheet, Foxx revealed the conversation he had with those in his inner circle before he experienced the medical emergency back in April 2023, which left him hospitalized for 20 days. He subsequently faced months of rehab, which saw him having to learn to walk all over again.

"You know what's crazy? Before it happened, I was talking to...

National Geographic’s Next Move: A Changemakers Power List (Exclusive)
Image
When the National Geographic Society published the first issue of its namesake magazine in September of 1888, it was, in the words of the publication, “a very staid affair.” There were no photos (those didn’t arrive until 1905), and the articles were more akin to what you might find in a scientific journal than a popular magazine.

Suffice it to say National Geographic evolved over the years, eventually leaning into photography and exploration, bringing the natural and human world to its readers every week during the heyday of magazines, and then every day amid the digital revolution.

Now, National Geographic is embarking on what it is calling one of its most ambitious efforts yet: A new multi-platform list to highlight and celebrate 33 individuals (in honor of the 33 founders of the Society) “whose imaginative ideas and unstoppable drive are making the world a better place.” The inaugural National Geographic 33 will be featured...

Jenna Ortega Says One of Her ‘First Jobs’ Was on ‘Iron Man 3’ But Marvel ‘Took All My Lines Out’: ‘They Even Took My Name Away’
Image
If you blinked, you may have missed Jenna Ortega’s MCU debut in 2013’s “Iron Man 3.”

In a sit down with Entertainment Tonight, Ortega briefly discussed her small role in the film after the interviewer told her, “I’m hoping that we can get Jenna Ortega into the Marvel Universe.”

“I did it once,” Ortega replied. “It was one of the first jobs I ever did. They took all my lines out. I’m in ‘Iron Man 3’ for a quick second. I take up the frame, I have one leg and I’m the vice president’s daughter.”

Paul Rudd, who was interviewed alongside Ortega, then interjected, hopeful that the “Scream” star could one day return to the MCU.

“Marvel is very good at like, kind of laying those bread crumbs,” Rudd, an MCU veteran, said. “And so it might very well be that you come back. That...

‘Black Bag’ Director Steven Soderbergh Wants Hollywood to Put More ‘Movies for Grown-Ups’ in Theaters
Image
Steven Soderbergh almost didn’t make “Black Bag.”

When he and “Jurassic Park” writer David Koepp first began collaborating, Koepp brought Soderbergh a handful of ideas. One of those was “Black Bag.” Soderbergh didn’t spark to the concept, instead choosing to focus on “Presence,” a ghost story that premiered at Sundance in 2024 and was released by Neon earlier this year.

Soderbergh said that he still encouraged Koepp to write it. “It was more of a case of, Dude, just write it. My immediate interest was more in seeing him get it done than it being something that I could then direct,” Soderbergh told TheWrap during a wide-ranging interview that touched on everything from the making of “Black Bag” to the difficulty of getting adult dramas in theaters to why he’s not directing the next “Ocean’s” movie.

When the screenwriter finally did write “Black Bag” and sent it to Soderbergh,...

This 27-Year-Old Halle Berry Thriller Features 1 of the Most Divisive Performances of All Time
Image
Quick LinksWhat is Bulworth About?Warren Beatty's Performance as Jay Bulworth is DivisiveBulworth's Strange, But Positive Critical Reception

When the phrase "divisive performance" is heard, most movie fans will immediately think of someone like Nicolas Cage. However, as a contracted actor with no role in the film's production, talent is often forced to simply follow the director's vision whether or not it lends to a terrible performance. This same logic can be applied to a plethora of controversial performances over the years. Whether it's Tom Hanks in Elvis or Eddie Redmayne in Jupiter Ascending, the real blame should be applied to their directors.

Due to this monkey wrench, a more interesting case of a divisive performance comes when the actor in question has creative control over the product. Whether they're the writer, director, or producer, it is endlessly fascinating to know for certain that this eccentric performance was 100% intentional.

After years of being overlooked, Kristen Bell is on the verge of first Primetime Emmy nomination
Image
Some actors win Primetime Emmys like rolling out of bed (like Allison Janney or Julia Louis-Dreyfus). Others are frequently nominated but have shockingly never won (like Steve Carell or Hugh Laurie). Then there are those who devote much of their careers to TV without ever sniffing a nod. Courteney Cox, for instance, was the only member of the core sextet on Friends never to be nominated for the show. Lauren Graham went from Gilmore Girls to Parenthood, but the TV Academy never took notice. And Kristen Bell has been a TV star for more than 20 years on multiple shows that have garnered awards buzz — even major nominations. But the attention has never gone her way. For Bell, her fortunes should finally change with Nobody Wants This.

Bell had a breakthrough year in 2004, with a two-episode arc during the first season of Deadwood and then debuted as the title character on Veronica Mars.

Johnny Depp Had to Battle the Likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Clint Eastwood and George Clooney in His 3 Failed Oscar Attempts
Image
When looking at Johnny Depp’s filmography, one can easily recognize that he looks like an actor who the Academy would snub multiple times. Talented, versatile, and with no desire to win the coveted trophy, Depp’s incredible performances are a testament to the fact that being the people’s champion is much more valuable than any other award.

Still, the legendary actor has been nominated thrice for the award. His most popular role, Captain Jack Sparrow, got a nod in his first appearance. However, all three nominations were with incredibly talented artists as his fellow nominees, and winning was tough. Sean Penn, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Clint Eastwood were just some of his competitors.

Every Oscar Best Picture Winner, Ranked

It’s a rare type of cinephile who wasn’t introduced to the idea of film as more than just idle entertainment by the ritual of the Academy Awards. And it’s an even rarer type of cinephile who didn’t soon thereafter vehemently reject the Oscars as the ultimate barometer of a film’s artistic worth. Those of us who started off with The Godfather, Schindler’s List, All About Eve, or Casablanca all eventually got around to Out of Africa, Around the World in 80 Days, The Greatest Show on Earth, Cimarron, and Cavalcade.

First loves being first loves, we still find ourselves regressing if for only one night a year, succumbing to the allure of instant canonization even as it comes in the form of repeated slap-in-the-face reminders of Oscar’s bracing wrongness: Gladiator, Braveheart, Chicago, Crash. In that sense, consider this project part cathartic exorcism and part...
