The Enterprise-c has returned! Again!
According to a Variety report about the future of the Star Trek franchise, the upcoming Section 31 movie will feature Kacey Rohl as a “young” Rachel Garrett, presumably before she became the captain of the Enterprise-c. It’s a surprising but exciting turn of events, to be sure, since Garrett has only appeared in a single episode of Star Trek, leaving much of her history yet to be explored. In fact, digging into more of Garrett’s story would be a way to unlock a piece of Star Trek captain lore that’s long been missing despite the Enterprise-c’s introduction over 30 years ago.
Fans first met an older Garrett (Tricia O’Neil) and the Enterprise-c in the season three Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “Yesterday’s Enterprise.” When that episode aired in February 1990, the arrival of the Enterprise-c addressed a question that had lingered since...

Stephen King is at his best when he's writing about his fears as a father. With "The Shining," he took his alcoholism and made the lead Jack Torrance into a worst-case scenario, someone who destroys his family (and potential writing career) because he lets his addiction consume him.
Then there's "Pet Sematary," which is all about the primal fear any parent has of their child dying. The Creed family moves to rural Maine, in a house right next to a lethal road frequented by trailer trucks. After the family cat Church becomes roadkill, Dr. Louis Creed and neighbor Jud Crandall bury the cat in an ancient Mi'kmaq burial ground. Church returns, alive but worse for wear. When Louis' toddler son Gage is killed by another oncoming truck, he can't resist the temptation to bring his son back. If there's anything that could inspire a normal person to play Dr. Frankenstein,...

Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, it all comes to an end as Rachel Reeves searches for scares in the suburbs.
In the back half of the 1980s, the American suburbs experienced a resurgence in popularity. As global instabilities stabilized and economies began to boom, moving to the suburbs became a sign of financial and professional success. Primarily populated by young families, the suburbs also became associated with traditional family values, safety, and community. However, as any true crime enthusiast knows, some things (and some people) are not always as innocent as they appear.

On the morning of January 23, 2024, actor Gary Graham, star of the "Alien Nation" TV series, the cult classic "Robot Jox," and multiple-time "Star Trek" supporting player, passed away at the age of 74. Graham had a prolific acting career, appearing in single episodes of many of the hottest TV shows of his day, including "Starsky & Hutch," "The Incredible Hulk," Knots Landing," "CHiPs," "T.J. Hooker," "Hunter," "M.A.N.T.I.S.," "Diagnosis Murder," "Ally McBeal," "Jag," and "Nip/Tuck." He had an easy demeanor, allowing him to play comedic affable characters just as well as intense, serious ones.
Trekkies likely know Graham best for playing Soval on "Star Trek: Enterprise." Soval was the snippy Vulcan ambassador who oversaw Earth's very, very slow transition from post-war ruin to a thriving society ready for space exploration. According to IMDb, "All Good Things..." -- the final episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" -- filmed on the Paramount lot and around Southern California from March 11, 1994, to April 5. The episode aired on May 23. The final episode made extensive use of the show's many sets, filming on the bridge, in Ten Forward, and throughout various corridors on the Enterprise-d. The series ended with a complex time-travel story, and the implication that the adventures of the Enterprise-d would continue, but that audiences simply wouldn't be allowed to watch them. Had "Star Trek" ended there, I think many Trekkies would have been perfectly content. Or, more likely, we would have happily shifted focus to "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" which debuted in January of 1993.
Paramount, it seems, wanted "Next Generation" to remain fresh in people's minds, however, and the production of the first "NextGen" feature film, "Star Trek: Generations," overlapped with "All Good Things.

This post contains spoilers for the series finale of "Suits."
Suits" ran for nine whole seasons, and the show's finale was a bittersweet one. A lot of loose ends were tied up, core characters had to make some difficult choices, and Harvey (Gabriel Macht) settled a final score with Faye Richardson (Denise Crosby) in an attempt to loosen her grasp over the firm. There were two weddings — one was expected, while the other was a surprise — and the story ended on a rather positive note for Mike (Patrick J. Adams) and Harvey, who decide to work together as a unit in Seattle. Now, four years after the series finale aired, fans of the show continue to express their love for the prolonged journey shared with the beloved characters and how these stories culminated into something meaningful.
Nothing about the series finale was last-minute, as "Suits" creator Aaron Korsh preplanned respective character routes very early on.

Every team has its growing pains, and that includes the casts of TV shows. While filming "Star Trek: The Next Generation," Patrick Stewart had a difficult time adjusting to the major differences between acting in the Royal Shakespeare Company and acting on a science-fiction TV series, and it ended up putting him in an embarrassing situation with his castmates. In his new memoir, "Making It So," Stewart shared that he felt he was occasionally a "severe bastard" who got frustrated with his castmates for being too jovial when they messed up their lines. While it's understandable that an actor might get a little annoyed when their co-stars are taking up time (and takes), Stewart apparently held a meeting where he discussed everyone's behavior, and he came off as a bit of a scold.

Back in 1986, Patrick Stewart famously balked at playing the role of Jean-Luc Picard on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." The role was contracted for six seasons, and the actor had never made that enormous of a commitment before. Many of Stewart's professional colleagues encouraged him to sign the contract, feeling that it was to be lucrative, and that "Star Trek: The Next Generation" would be swiftly canceled and he could walk away and work on other projects. Only his friend Ian McKellan discouraged Stewart from moving to TV, feeling that they both had more important things to be done on stage.
But Stewart signed the contract, went to Los Angeles, and crashed with a friend for a few weeks at a posh mansion in Bel Air. Strewart's rich friends provided him with good food, access to a swimming pool, and fascinating conversation. In exchange, Stewart only needed to bring...

In many ways, "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry was a very progressive thinker. His hit TV series depicted a future wherein humanity had outgrown concepts like prejudice, war, and greed, and it stood as an open criticism of Cold War politics, corporate malfeasance, and the damage the religious right was doing to the country. Roddenberry pictured a semi-idealized future without want, and posited that humans would eventually come to embrace intellect, diplomacy, open-mindedness, and a benevolent -- not a warlike -- relationship with technology.
When it came to sex and women, however, Roddenberry was perhaps a little less philosophically graceful. He famously had multiple affairs and long-term girlfriends while he was married, and oversaw multiple "Star Trek" episodes that were, more or less, sexual fantasies for him. He was a free love advocate, often speaking crassly about the importance of sex in his life. In the book "The Fifty-Year Mission:...

Tom Hardy's first major film gag was playing one of the many faceless soldiers in Ridley Scott's overwrought war thriller "Black Hawk Down" in 2001. The actor was only about 24 at the time and had just come off of the acclaimed HBO WWII miniseries "Band of Brothers." His second feature was also a war drama called "Deserter," a low-profile project that was released in 2002. Casting directors seemed to like the way Hardy looked in uniform.
Also in 2002, however, Hardy was offered a higher-profile role -- and a very challenging one -- when he was cast as Shinzon in Stuard Baird's "Star Trek: Nemesis." Shinzon was a clone of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) who had been raised in a Reman mining colony, and who would rise up against his Roluman oppressors and attempt to take control of the Romulan Star Empire. Shinzon was essentially a younger, more aggressive version of Picard,...

Patrick Stewart is opening up about losing his temper the set of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” because he felt his co-stars weren’t being as serious as he was.
In an excerpt from his new book, Making It So: A Memoir, Stewart recalled becoming frustrated with the convivial atmosphere on the set.
“I stormed off the set and into my trailer, slamming the door.”
“My castmates doubled over in laughter when they flubbed multiple takes and, in rehearsals, they sometimes ad-libbed things that weren’t in the script to make their lines funnier,” Stewart wrote, via The Hollywood Reporter.

Patrick Stewart is looking back on a heated encounter he had with his cast as a member of Star Trek.
The 83-year-old screen legend has been working in Hollywood for decades now, and one of his most beloved and long-lasting roles has been playing Jean-Luc Picard in the fantasy world.
Despite having a long-lasting connection to the Star Trek universe, Patrick recently admitted that there were some rocky moments at the start when he joined Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987.
In fact, he even recalled storming off set once. He opened up about what happened and explained why he was wrong for his behavior while teasing his forthcoming Making It So: A Memoir.

Though Patrick Stewart is now perhaps best known for his role in “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” there was a point in time when he “stormed off” set due to his castmates being what he deemed as unprofessional.
Stewart narrates the incident in his upcoming autobiography, “Making It So: A Memoir.” The way he tells it, when he first was on the set of “The Next Generation,” he faced a clash of acting styles. While the classically trained actor took his first major paid acting role incredibly seriously, costars like Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner and Denise Crosby didn’t share his approach. Because of this, when they teased him or improvised a line, it would anger Stewart.
In the book, Stewart notes, “I could be a severe bastard.”

Patrick Stewart had a rough start behind the scenes at Star Trek: The Next Generation.
As candidly detailed in an exclusive audio excerpt (hear Stewart narrate the story below) from his new autobiography, Making It So: A Memoir, the veteran British actor clashed with his castmates early on.
But first, Stewart detailed how nervous he was about playing a Star Trek captain, how industry insiders were predicting the syndicated series was doomed to fail, and how he was determined to take the part quite seriously. It was the British Shakespeare stage actor’s first regular TV series — he was being paid more money than he had ever imagined earning — and he wanted to prove naysayers wrong while respecting the legacy of the franchise.

For many years, death in "Star Trek" was a permanent event. To cite a notable example: when Captain Kirk's brother Sam (William Shatner) was killed in the episode "Operation -- Annihilate!", he was dead forever. There wasn't a storyline later in the series wherein Sam was cloned or resurrected somehow.
In 2023, the tune on death has changed, and multiple characters have now died and returned. Naturally, "Star Trek III: The Seach for Spock" surrounded the resurrection of the title character (Leonard Nimoy). Every Trekkie can tell you the saga of the death of Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby) and her subsequent return in the form of her half-Romulan daughter Sela.
Neelix (Ethan Phillips) was killed and brought back via Borg technology in the "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Mortal Coil," and Dr. Culber (Wilson Cruz) was salvaged from a mushroom dimension. More recently, In "Star Trek: Picard," Data (Brent Spiner), who...

The 1991 two-part "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Unification" was a banner event for Trekkies. Although Dr. Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley) appeared in the show's pilot as a 137-year-old man, the events of the series were meant to be far enough removed from the original "Star Trek" series to assure no further crossovers. "Next Generation" was determined to shake off the legacy of its forebear and forge its own path.
After five seasons, however, the new legacy was established. "Next Generation" had lasted longer than the original series, and its characters were now recognizable on their own merits. "Next Generation" became its own thing. It was only then, when the show could stand on its own two legs and didn't require constant references to the original series, that a guest spot from a beloved original series character could take place. In "Unification," Spock (Leonard Nimoy) returned. Trekkies loved it, not just because they loved Spock,...

In the expansive "Star Trek" universe, some of its brightest stars embarked on unforeseen journeys, abruptly departing the franchise to both the dismay and intrigue of fandom.
Why didn't Kirstie Alley return as the beloved Lt. Saavik? What prompted Jeffrey Hunter to relinquish the role of Captain Pike? Who ejected Gates McFadden's Dr. Crusher from the airlock? How come Diana Muldaur, her replacement, endured only a single season? Why did Wil Wheaton part ways with Wesley Crusher? And why was Grace Lee Whitney, as Yeoman Janice Rand, dropped from the cast even before the original series premiered in 1966?
These departures stemmed from a myriad of forces: financial constraints, contract negotiations, miscasting, yearnings for new horizons or strange new opportunities, life-altering events, creative and personal conflicts, or a blend of these influences. Most were unexpected and frequently controversial. Whether these exits bolstered or hindered the franchise, the judgment is yours,...

The world changed a lot in the 20 years that "Star Trek" was off-air. The Cold War was all but over when "The Next Generation" began airing in 1987. So, it made sense to reimagine the Klingons, who during "The Original Series" had been the Ussr stand-ins to the Federation's America. Mark A. Altman and Edward Gross' behind-the-scenes book, "The 50-Year Mission," details how the "Tng" writers did so.
David Gerrold, a writer on "Tos" who returned for "Tng," pitched a Klingon First Officer on the Enterprise-d. The parallels to Spock (Leonard Nimoy) would be obvious; producer Robert H. Justman even suggested the Klingon be half-human.
But wait, Worf wasn't the first officer on the Enterprise-d. That's because this idea was vetoed by "Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry. Roddenberry did not want to use the villains from "The Original Series" — his "Tng" production bible says Klingons and Romulans are verboten. Associate producer D.C. Fontana...

The start of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" was a difficult and tempestuous time. Many Trekkies will be able to tell you the series of events: "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" wasn't the enormous hit that Paramount wanted when the film was released in 1979, and "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry was uninvited from participating in any further sequels. Smarting from the rejection, Roddenberry eventually turned back to TV, developing an all-new "Star Trek" show at the studio's behest. This show was to be the purer version of "Star Trek," complete with Roddenberry's infamous "no infighting between the characters" mandate that so frustrated his writing staff. Roddenberry was also determined to retain as much control as possible over "Next Generation," causing him to butt heads with, well, just about everyone around him.

In the first-season "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Skin of Evil", the shuttlecraft carrying Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) crashes on a seemingly uninhabited alien world called Vagra II. The Enterprise goes to rescue her, but finds that Troi's crashed shuttle is being guarded by a mysterious living puddle of black tar. The tar shapeshifts into a vaguely human form and calls itself Armus, the only inhabitant of this world. Armus is seethingly cruel and takes pleasure in the death and suffering of the people it encounters. It refuses to let Troi go, wanting to torment the Enterprise crew members who have beamed down to gather her.

This Star Trek: Picard article contains spoilers.
What’s behind the red door? No matter how much Star Trek: Picard keeps insisting that we’ll soon learn the truth about Jack Crusher, the son of Beverly Crusher and Jean-Luc Picard, the show keeps moving the goalposts, shoving the explanation off to the next episode. Unsurprisingly, the internet has filled in the gaps with their own theories. One of the latest would bring back one of the most mysterious villains from Deep Space Nine: the Pah-wraiths.
For those who don’t recall, the Pah-wraiths are the evil counterparts to the Prophets, central figures in the Bajoran religion. Where Bajorans worship the Prophets for their benevolent guidance, they fear the Pah-wraiths for their destructive meddling. Through Benjamin Sisko‘s encounters with the Prophets, we learn that they are not gods, but an alien race living in the wormhole outside of Bajor.

Spoilers follow.
How admirable that the showrunners of "Star Trek: Picard" waited until the eighth episode of the series to finally unite Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, Gates McFadden, LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, and Brent Spiner together in the same room. The episode, called "Surrender," ends with Picard, Riker, Troi, Dr. Crusher, Geordi La Forge, Worf, and a new-and-improved version of Data all gathered around a conference table — just like on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" — to reconnoiter and figure out what to do next.
The sight of these characters back on the job was accompanied by some treacly, nostalgic music, natch, which is mildly irritating. Also, I could have gone without a few weepy lines of dialogue about how great it is to be together again; did none of these characters come to resent their old coworkers? But overall the moment felt more natural than one might expect.
Michael Dorn's complicated Klingon, Worf, is one of the most beloved of all "Star Trek" characters, and for good reason. The first Klingon Starfleet officer appears in more episodes of "Star Trek" than any other character, with regular roles in three different "Star Trek" series. He seems somewhat simple on the surface, as his stoic attitude and appreciation for oddly mundane/human things like prune juice and opera make him seem like your basic space curmudgeon, your grumpy Gus with a laser pistol. He's so much more than that, however, in large part because the actor who plays him, Michael Dorn, has invested so much into both the character and the Klingon culture that helped shape him.
Fans have gotten to watch Worf grow over the years, first appearing as a command officer on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" before becoming the Enterprise-d's chief of security after the...

The third season of "Star Trek: Picard" is set to debut on Paramount+ on February 16, and many recognizable characters from "Star Trek: The Next Generation" will be returning. LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Marina Sirtis, Jonathan Frakes, and Gates McFadden will reprise their NextGen roles, while Brent Spiner will be playing Lore, Data's evil android twin. Additionally, Daniel Davis will also come back as Moriarity, the sentient holodeck version of Sherlock Holmes' nemesis. There is no word as to the return of other main cast members Wil Wheaton, Diana Muldaur, or Denise Crosby, but seeing as "Picard" is currently rolling hard with its nostalgia, there's every reason to believe one or all of them will also appear.
The characters, of course, are all older, wiser, and in different places in their lives. Most dramatically, as seen in previews, Dr. Crusher (McFadden) appears to have moved from medicine into vigilantism. She is seen wielding weapons,...

Grief is a common thread in many horror films. It often plays a minor role in the film, or as you'll see from our list, grief lies at the heart of a film's emotional core. It drives the story forward and grounds the character(s) in realism when spooky things start to happen. In dealing with the supernatural, the occult, a masked killer, or any manner of other genre foes, the protagonists learn how to finally process their grief and slay their demons. The external forces are sometimes the least of their worries.
For the sake of our list, we take a look at grief as a direct response to death. Grief, as we know, can result from any sort of loss, from the death of a pet to a lost friendship. Below, we picked through decades of films to compile the 14 best titles depicting grief, each possessing a mood and approach all their own.

This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks."
The newest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," called "Trusted Sources," is about a new Starfleet initiative proposed by Captain Freeman (Dawnn Lewis). Tired of constantly performing Second Contact missions -- the less glamorous expansion of First Contact missions -- Freeman has suggested the U.S.S. Cerritos take part in what she calls the Planetary Follow-Up Initiative that would require ships to drop in on planets Starfleet hasn't looked into for a while. If successful, Project: Swing-By would become standard operating procedure across every California class starship. Yes, Second Contact and Swing-By missions are pretty much the same thing. That's the gag.
Audiences will also recognize that Operation Swing-By also gives the "Lower Decks" writers an organic excuse to write sequels to just about any Trek episode they want. If a viewer is in the habit...

It’s hard to forget one of the first disabled women I ever saw on the big screen. In the 1989 adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, “Pet Sematary,” Zelda (Andrew Hubatsek), the deceased sister of Rachel Creed (Denise Crosby), suffers from spinal meningitis. She is seen predominately in flashbacks, and Zelda becomes a literal and metaphorical ghost who haunts Rachel throughout the film. Zelda is skeletal, her spine deformed.
To see Zelda in the film is to see a monster.
Growing up with a bone disability, Zelda utterly terrified me, because I had no other disabled women, on screens large or small or elsewhere, to compare her to. To me, I wasn’t just scared of Zelda because the movie portrayed her as a villain, I was scared because I worried that this is what disabled women ended up like. That this is what I was going to end up like.

Prior to "Star Trek: Lower Decks," the experiences of lower-ranking Starfleet officers were largely placed in the hands of the notoriously goody-goody character of Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Wesley was exceptionally bright, and despite having lost his father in the service, dreams of joining Starfleet himself. He is supernaturally motivated, and is constantly seen studying, reading, and conducting scientific experiments in his spare time. He is also obnoxiously squeaky clean, once notoriously asking Lt. Yar (Denise Crosby) why anyone would ever want to do drugs. Wesley is, in short, a narc.
Wesley would eventually make some pretty rash mistakes at Starfleet Academy, and end up leaving the service to galavant about the galaxy as a semi-supernatural energy being. But Starfleet was presented as -- as Wesley seemed to feel -- the ultimate goal of a youth well spent. It was the best possible career.

This year's Star Trek Day offered plenty of new teases for what's to come in the beloved franchise created by Gene Roddenberry. Fans were treated to sneak peeks at the future of shows like "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," "Star Trek: Lower Decks," and more. However, those with an affinity towards "Star Trek: The Next Generation" are likely the most excited for the upcoming season of "Star Trek: Picard."
Ahead of the series' third and final chapter, Paramount unveiled a brand new trailer touting the next adventure starring the legendary admiral played by Patrick Stewart. But he'll also be joined by a number of old friends for the first time since 2002's "Star Trek: Nemesis" in what could be the former Enterprise captain's last mission.

There have been a lot of Star Trek documentaries, countless behind-the-scenes DVD extras, and everyone ever involved in the franchise has written a memoir.
“It’s the number-one most covered topic not connected to World War II, apart from maybe the Civil War,” says Brian Volk-Weiss, director of the documentary, The Center Seat: Celebrating 55 Years of Star Trek, which launches this week in the UK on IMDb TV.
But even after all this time there are still surprising new facts to discover, as Volk-Weiss himself found out during the making of the series.
“I’m a lifelong Trekkie. The name of my company [The Nacelle Company] is 100% a Star Trek reference. So, I say this with confidence, I don’t think my Star Trek love could be questioned,” he says. “I learned stuff that nobody knew, and I learned stuff that I thought it was really strange I didn’t know.

This Star Trek article contains minor spoilers for Lower Decks Season 2, Episode 6.
Tasha Yar deserved better. When the oil slick creature known as Armus killed off Tasha in The Next Generation episode “Skin of Evil,” the fandom let out a collective groan. As its first season wrapped up, Tng was already down one fantastic character and the franchise wouldn’t get another female head-of-security on a regular basis until Nhan appeared in Star Trek: Discovery, 31 years later. But, like some kind of self-aware rogue A.I., the canon of Star Trek itself seems to want justice for Tasha Yar. The latest example comes from the coda of the Lower Decks episode, “The Spy Humongous,” further proving that, decades later, Trek canon is still looking to avenge Tasha Yar. Here’s how the hilarious Lower Decks Easter egg went down…

All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 28 to cast their 2021 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for programs. Unlike the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally. In the past, voters were limited in the number of programs that they could put forth. Four years ago that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted.
While the comedy and drama series ballots have each maintained an average of over 100 entrants in recent years, there have nearly always been fewer than 40 choices in the limited series genre. There are 37 shows on the list this year, which is down by four from last year. There were 35 in 2019, 33 in 2018, and 25 in 2017. Five series from the list below will make the cut and be announced as Emmy nominees on July 13.

Lindsey Beer will direct Paramount Player’s follow-up adaptation of 2019’s “Pet Sematary,” based on Stephen King’s bestseller, an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap.
Beer also wrote the most recent script based off a draft by Jeff Buhler. The film will debut exclusively on Paramount+. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian will produce.
Plot details are being kept under wraps.
The film was announced in February as part of the studio’s new push to move original content to the relaunched streamer.
King wrote the book in 1983, which was adapted into a film in 1989 and in 2019. The 1989 film was directed by Mary Lambert and starred Dale Midkiff, Denise Crosby, Blaze Berdahl, Fred Gwynne and Miko Hughes. It grossed $57.5 million on a budget of $11.5 million, and a sequel was released in 1992.

“ died a senseless death in the other timeline. I didn’t like the sound of that, Captain. I’ve always known the risks that come with a Starfleet uniform. If I am to die in one, I’d like my death to count for something.”
Denise Crosby’s Lt. Tasha Yar, Star Trek: The Next Generation’s inaugural chief of security, managed—due to some alternate timeline trickery—to take that legendary meta-minded dig at her own death from two years earlier in the Season 1 episode, “Skin of Evil.” With that episode having originally aired on April 25, 1988, the anniversary is a good occasion to look back on the controversial behind-the-scenes circumstances that resulted in poor Tasha’s unspectacular, abrupt, red-shirt-like fatal encounter with an alien tar monster on a cheap-looking set.
