In John Hughes' 1985 teen dramedy "The Breakfast Club," five teenagers are locked in their school library on a Saturday as punishment for a variety of on-campus transgressions. The teens are lucky that their cruel headmaster, Mr. Vernon (Paul Gleason), isn't entirely attentive, as his periodic absences allow them to talk, bond, and come to understand their prejudices about each other. By the end of the day, the five teens -- Andrew, Claire, Brian, Allison, and John -- may have become friends. More than anything, they understand a lot more about who they are.
John Bender (Judd Nelson) is the troublemaker of the group, and he will reveal his uncaring attitude comes quite directly from having an abusive father. He also deflects a lot of negativity through humor, and it will be he who suggests the other four learn how liberating it is to deliberately break rules. Oliver Stone is more than just a filmmaker. The man enlisted in the United States Army during the time of the Vietnam War and when he returned, he decided to tell the harrowing stories of war through the art of filmmaking. His 1986 film Platoon starring was one such film, but it could’ve ended up looking a bit different if actors like Keanu Reeves and Kevin Costner had agreed to be a part of it.
A still from Platoon (1986)
So why did they turn down a film that would go on to become critically acclaimed, do great at the box office, and receive not one, but four Academy Awards? Well, given the fact that the film was based on the Vietnam War and Oliver Stone’s firsthand experience with it, the topic might have been a bit too much for the actors.
Why Did Keanu Reeves and Kevin Costner Turn Down Platoon?...

Molly Ringwald, star of 1980s hit The Breakfast Club, has revealed she only rewatched the movie recently, and was jarred by some of the themes that were glossed over at the time.
Ringwald played Claire Standish, nicknamed “Princess,” one of five disparate school students grouped together during a weekend detention period, in the movie, written and directed by John Hughes, which debuted in 1985. Her co-stars included Judd Nelson, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy and Anthony Michael Hall, with Paul Gleason as the school’s authoritarian vice-principal.
Ringwald told The Times of London she sat down to watch the movie with her 21-year-old daughter, actress Mathilda Gianopoulos:
“I only rewatched The Breakfast Club, which came out in 1985, because Mathilda wanted to see it with me. There is a lot that I really love about the movie but there are elements that haven’t aged well — like Judd Nelson’s character, John Bender,...

The 1990s were full of top-notch science fiction films that won over critics and set the box office on fire -- after all, we're talking about a decade that produced "Independence Day" (which beat "Mars Attacks!" to theaters), "The Matrix" (albeit with some complex behind-the-scenes activity), "The Fifth Element" (ripping off Plato to great effect) and the list goes on and on. But not every sci-fi release can be a winner, and the decade also had its fair share of stinkers. Whether they were derivative of other (better) films, hacked to pieces as a result of studio interference, or let down by the limitations of 1990s technology, there are endless reasons why an ambitious science-fiction project might crash and burn.
However, many of these ambitious but panned sci-fi movies are often not without their redeeming factors, and despite their negative reception -- especially on Rotten Tomatoes -- you can often...

Francis Ford Coppola is celebrating his memorable film The Outsiders with footage of the auditions that brought together the film’s young stars, almost all of whom went on to even greater glory.
Patrick Swayze, Tom Cruise, Emilio Estevez, Diane Lane, Ralph Macchio, Matt Dillon, and Rob Lowe were part of the magic cast.
“42 years ago, we cast The Outsiders in a unique way,” Coppola wrote in an Instagram post Wednesday. “We had all the actors together on a soundstage and would alternate different actors reading for different roles.”
He continued: “It was interesting because each of them was watching their competition, so while it could’ve been a volatile situation, it turned into a very positive one. There emerged the natural respect and sense of colleagueship among them. The result worked beautifully and reminded me of my days as a camp counselor.”

Four decades after its release, director Francis Ford Coppola took to Instagram on Thursday to share audition tapes from his 1983 film, The Outsiders.
The film, based on the 1963 novel by S.E. Hinton, is known for, among other things, launching the careers of many of its young stars, including Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio, Diane Lane, C. Thomas Howell, Matt Dillon and Emilio Estevez.
In his post on Thursday, Coppola recounted his unique casting process for the endeavor. “We had all the actors together on a soundstage and would alternate different actors reading for different roles,” he said. The process is reflected in the accompanying footage of Coppola’s post, where various actors read lines from characters they did not play. At one point, the clips include several different performances of the line, “Hop the 3:15 freight to Windrixvill.”

Get ready to dive back into the punk rock sci-fi wasteland of 1984’s Repo Man — a sequel, titled Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer, has been announced, with the original writer and director, Alex Cox, set to return.
The story was first reported by Variety, who confirmed that Cox would be in the director’s chair, with Kiowa Gordon (Twilight) starring as the punk-turned-repo-man, Otto, portrayed by Emilio Estevez in the original. Plot-wise, the new film will pick up right where the original left off, following Otto after a brief trip “across the infinities of time and space,” which has only aged him “exactly 90 minutes.”
According to filmmakers, Repo Man 2 will “deliver an enthralling mix of punk energy, existential comedy, and unconventional storytelling, navigating the absurd and chaotic world of repo men into a new age of nuclear brinkmanship and driverless cars.”

“It’s a mystery… it’s a comedy… it’s a chase… it’s the forces of law against the representatives of discontented youth… against the finest minds in government… and they’re all in pursuit of a ’64 Chevy Malibu from… who knows where,” the original theatrical trailer for 1984’s Repo Man previewed. A fitting description for an oddball cult classic that’s… getting a sequel?!
40 years later, director Alex Cox is returning to the world of Repo Man with sequel Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer, and Indiewire broke the news of the project this week.
According to the site, the upcoming sequel Repo Man 2 will “take place in a world of self-driving cars and an even more pressing threat of global destruction.”
“The advent of incredible technology means, for the repo man, that everything has changed — and nothing has changed,” Cox explained to Indiewire in an email this week.

Alex Cox on Why He’s Directing a ‘Repo Man’ Sequel: ‘Everything Has Changed and Nothing Has Changed’
Alex Cox’s 1984 “Repo Man” was a Reagan-era satire about consumerism and the Atomic Age. Its punk rock soundtrack transformed it into a cult hit, but its funny and strange combination of sci-fi, workplace comedy, and the fear of nuclear annihilation made it an enduring classic.
Forty years later, Cox will revisit the repo man and the world of bland, generic grocery store clerks stocking and selling “Food” and “Beer” day in and day out. He has written and will direct a sequel, “Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer,” and he told IndieWire why this film will embody “the repo world of 2024.”
Cox said “The Wages of Beer” will take place in a world of self-driving cars and an even more pressing threat of global destruction. “The advent of incredible technology means, for the repo man, that everything has changed — and nothing has changed,” he said via email.

Alex Cox is finally getting Repo Man 2 off the ground, and it’s set to be called Repo Man 2: The Wages Of Beer – more here.
It’s been seven years since British director Alex Cox’s last feature – Tombstone Rashomon – was released. But in a surprise piece of news, he’s heading back behind the camera again, for a project he previously tried to get going in the 1990s.
It’s a sequel to his 1984 cult favourite Repo Man, a film that starred Harry Dean Stanton and Emilio Estevez. It’s a satirical science fiction thriller, set in 1960s America, that never set the box office alight, but has earned its audience over time.
Now comes the news that Alex Cox has written the script for Repo Man 2: The Wages Of Beer, that he’s raising funds for at the European Film Market over the next week or so.

Marking an incredible escape from director jail, Alex Cox is ramping up his first feature in seven years (and perhaps the first well-financed project in 20-plus). At this year’s Berlinale and European Film Market he’ll shop Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer, which continues directly from his 1984 cult classic as Otto, having aged a total of 90 minutes, boards “his trusty 1967 Chevy Malibu to journey across the infinities of time and space.” [Variety]
Cox has mostly laid low in recent years, directing the odd microbudget project here and there––among them a spiritual sequel, Repo Chick, that looks more like a Tim and Eric sketch than studio production––making this return to feature filmmaking quite notable. Though primarily known for Repo Man or Sid and Nancy, his filmography’s studded with treasures: Walker, Straight to Hell, and (personal favorite) Three Businessmen boast a punk-with-classicism sensibility that is simply non pareil.

Per Variety, Alex Cox is ready to return to the bizarre world of car repossession and extraterrestrials. The outlet reports that the director is set to helm Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer, a long-belated sequel to the 1984 cult classic.
The original movie starred Emilio Estevez as Otto, a young punk who is recruited by a car repossession agency and finds himself in pursuit of a Chevrolet Malibu that is wanted for a $20,000 bounty – and has something otherworldly stashed in its trunk. The sequel will pick up “after Otto has boarded his trusty 1967 Chevy Malibu to journey across the infinities of time and space. In that time, he has aged exactly 90 minutes.” As Estevez is naturally a little too old to reprise the role, Kiowa Gordon has stepped in to play Otto in the sequel.

The “Repo Man” director is revisiting the off-kilter world of extraterrestrials and car repossession that he mined so memorably in the 1984 cult classic in a new sequel that is being introduced to buyers at the Berlin Film Festival and European Film Market. Entitled “Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer,” the film is being backed by Buffalo 8 Productions, a film and media company best known for the critically acclaimed work on Netflix series “The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes.” Cox wrote the script along with directing the film.

According to Andrew McCarthy, he could tell there was a difference in how he was treated once he was labelled as part of the iconic Brat Pack group of actors in the 1980s. The “St. Elmo’s Fire” and “Pretty in Pink” star broke down the change during a panel at the Television Critics Association’s 2024 winter tour.
McCarthy is currently behind “Brats,” ABC News Studios’ upcoming documentary about the group. The film follows McCarthy as he reunites with former members of the group and reflects on how David Blum’s 1985 New York magazine feature, which popularized the nickname, forever changed their careers.

A 1985 New York Magazine article that first termed the phrase Brat Pack rocked the world of Andrew McCarthy and his co-stars of St. Elmo’s Fire — so much that each of the actors went years, even decades, without talking to each other. As McCarthy says, “actors want to be free of that baggage.”
Not anymore. McCarthy is now behind an ABC News documentary called Brats that addresses how that one phrase captured the zeitgeist and forever altered the careers of then 20-something actors like Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Mare Winningham and Molly Ringwald. Even then, it was not entirely clear who was a member of the Brat Pack.

Andrew McCarthy has written and directed Brats, and his documentary about The Brat Pack arrives later this year. More details within.
Tearing up the 1980s, both on and off cinema screens, was a bunch of young performers who earned themselves the collective name of The Brat Pack.
The group was made up of the likes of Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, Bob Cryer and Andrew McCarthy, and they sprung to prominence particularly in 1985 and 1986. That’s when that group made up the cast for two hit movies, namely St Elmo’s Fire (pictured) and Pretty In Pink.
Other films followed, and the tabloid interest was intense, leading writer David Blum to give them the Brat Pack name. Andrew McCarthy reflected on all of this in a memoir he penned called Brats, released in 2021. Now, Deadline reports that the story is being turned by McCarthy into a documentary.

Lovers of 80s movies know the Brat Pack. The group of stars who graced the silver screen in films like Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and St. Elmos Fire were teen sensations and helped a generation grapple with coming-of-age issues in high school. Most have gone on to blossom into illustrious film careers, but they will always be remembered for their run in the 1980s film scene. While most also eventually bowed gracefully out of show business down the line, Andrew McCarthy was one member who had been out of the spotlight since the 90s.
Deadline is reporting that McCarthy will be rejoining his cohorts for the Hulu documentary titled Brats. McCarthy had written a memoir called Brat: An 80s story and has now written and directed the documentary that is currently in post-production. Exclusive: I sit down for breakfast with Charlie Sheen not exactly knowing what to expect. His bookend episodes of Bookie that reunited him with Two And a Half Men‘s Chuck Lorre remind of what was lost after the actor’s inexplicable, substance-fueled “Tiger Blood” meltdown led to an abrupt parting of the ways and separating him from one of sitcom TV’s highest-ever salaries at a reported $1.8 million an episode. It has been a dozen years since then, and I come in harboring my own feelings. Basically, Two And a Half Men (the Charlie Harper Years) have been my reliable go-to at the end of most long days in the trenches. I can practically recite the dialogue along with Sheen, Jon Cryer, Angus T. Jones, as well as Holland Taylor (their mom), Melanie Lynskey (Charlie’s stalker), Marin Hinkle (Alan Harper’s ex), and the late Conchata Ferrell, who played the housekeeper Berta.

In 1985, a princess, a brain, a jock, a basket case, and a criminal got together for weekend detention and came out of it changed people. The culture of Gen X was often defined by the stereotypes they fit in as teenagers, whether it was the truth of who they were or not. Nowhere was that more apparent than in the films of writer/director John Hughes. "The Breakfast Club" is a pivotal movie for that generation.
In the film, we spend the day with a group of kids in weekend detention. Claire (Molly Ringwald) was the popular rich girl whose parents didn't care about her. Brian (Anthony Michael Hall) was the brain who attempted suicide after getting a failing grade that didn't meet his parents' expectations (Hughes played his dad in an uncredited cameo). Andrew (Emilio Estevez) was the jock who got in trouble for physically abusing one of Brian's friends.

Last week, we ran a special Wtf episode about the 1979 Disney movie, The Black Hole, an uncommonly adult film for the family-friendly studio. It kicked off an experiment for the studio to move into adult fare, eventually spawning no less than three subsidiaries that produced some of the most influential movies of the 80s, 90s and 2000s. These off-shoots paved the way for Disney’s place as the most powerful motion picture studio in the world, with them owning Lucasfilm, Pixar and the MCU. With the studio celebrating its 100th anniversary, we figured now would be an opportune time to look back at the studio Disney launched to distribute their more grown-up fare, the now shuttered Touchstone Pictures.

Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story star David Harbour considers his new film to be a real-life The Last Starfighter.
In Nick Castle’s 1984 film that Steven Spielberg and Seth Rogen have both tried to remake, Alex Rogan (Lance Guest) is an aimless teenager who perfects an arcade game called Starfighter and ends up being recruited by the game’s alien inventor to help fight in an interstellar war. Well, Neil Blomkamp’s Gran Turismo tells the true story of how Jann Mardenborough (Archie Madekwe) mastered the Gran Turismo video game en route to being recruited by Nissan and becoming a professional racing driver.
Harbour’s character, Jack Salter, who’s a former driver turned mechanic, is the one tasked with actually turning Jann into a proper race car driver, and the role has shades of Robert Duvall in Days of Thunder (1990), John Candy in Cool Runnings (1993) and Emilio Estevez...

Cars, it’s often been observed, offer a sort of contradiction of motion: They allow us to move around while sitting still. It only makes sense, then, that the movies have for so long been attracted to the allure of the automobile, for surely the appeal of the cinema lies in its capacity to take us from the comfort of the theater or living room to adventures around the world. The greatest car movies—movies about cars, largely set in cars, or otherwise significantly concerned with them—understand that our affection for our vehicles has as much to do with the possible freedoms they promise as the routines they let us uphold. Cars drive us to and from work every day, keeping our lives precisely ordered. But they also suggest escape: We’re always aware, faintly, that we could drive away from it all at any moment, out and off...

Howdy pardners! Today, we’re galloping back to 1988, when Christopher Cain and a band of rootin’ tootin’ outlaws shot up the silver screen for the American Western action film Young Guns. Presented as a retelling of the adventures of Billy the Kid during the Lincoln Couty War, Young Gun features a murderers’ row of talent, including Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, Charlie Sheen, Dermot Mulroney, Casey Siemaszko, Terence Stamp, Jack Palance, and Terry O’Quinn.
Cain directs from a script by John Fusco. Young Guns revolves around a group of young gunmen, led by Billy the Kid, who become deputies to avenge the murder of the rancher who became their benefactor. However, when Billy takes their authority too far, they become the hunted.
Historian Paul Hutton once called Young Guns the most historically accurate of all films focusing on the dirty deeds of Billy the Kid as of its year of release.

One of independent film’s key players, Ray Price, died July 16 at the age of 75 from heart failure after a long battle with cancer, his long-term partner Meg Madison confirmed.
Talking to Price about movies, past and present, was an exhilarating sport that could take a while. He knew his stuff — no one loved movies more — but more than anyone during the great indie decades of the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, he was a respected innovator who thought outside the box. He began as an exhibitor in San Francisco and moved on to marketing, releasing, and distributing movies, leaning toward the outrageous in how he lured audiences to sample challenging fare.

In the 1980s, Andrew McCarthy attained stardom by virtue of being part of the Brat Pack, starring in films like Pretty in Pink and St. Elmo’s Fire with other Brat Packers like Molly Ringwald, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, and Demi Moore. In the 1990s, McCarthy went on the record as denying he was ever part of the Brat Pack. But, in recent years, he’s had a change of heart. Two years ago, he published a memoir called Brat: An ’80s Story, and he’s currently working on a documentary based on the book. Speaking at a Steel City Con panel, McCarthy talked about why he eventually decided to embrace his Brat Pack membership. Chicago – Sharing his travels was the aim of actor Andrew McCarthy, and he was able to do with this son, as chronicled in his new book “Walking with Sam: A Father, a Son, and Five Hundred Miles Across Spain.” Photographer Joe Arce crossed his path and took Exclusive Portraits for HollywoodChicago.com.
When Andrew McCarthy’s eldest son began to take his first steps into adulthood, the father found himself wishing time would slow down. Looking to create a more meaningful connection with Sam before he fled the nest, as well as recreate his own life-altering journey decades before, McCarthy decided the two of them should set out on a trek like few others … the 500 miles across Spain’s Camino de Santiago. “Walking with Sam” captures this intimate, candid and hopeful expedition as the father and son duo travel across the country and towards one another.

The world has changed, but Ethan Hunt has not. This is a refrain said time and again about Tom Cruise’s superspy in the Mission: Impossible movies—to the point where it’s become almost something like a prayer or affirmation about Ethan’s preternatural need to gamble with everyone’s lives… and win.
Yet the familiar spiel lands with a lot more gravitas in the latest Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One trailer when it’s delivered by Eugene Kittridge (Henry Czerny). “Our lives are the sum of our choices,” Kittridge intones with an oily touch of fatalism. “We cannot escape the past. In the era of "everything old is new again" that Hollywood has been going through for some time, why not "Young Guns 3"? That's what Emilio Estevez believes anyhow, as the actor is very much ready to reprise his role as Billy the Kid in a new film in the franchise more than 30 years after the release of "Young Guns 2." What's more, Estevez actually believes there's a lot of gas in the tank for this franchise — four or five movies worth.
Estevez recently spoke with Uproxx about the prospect of "Young Guns 3," which first surfaced as a real possibility a couple of years back. Not only did Estevez say he's "ready to go" but he said, seemingly in earnest, "I think, not only just one more film in the franchise, but I think you could do three, four, and five." What's holding these grand plans up? Legal red tape.

Speaking with Uproxx, Emilio Estevez said his spurs are all shined up should everything align. “It all comes down to the legal minds that work out IP. Listen, I’m ready to go. We have a terrific draft and if we can figure out the copyrights on all of this, and if Morgan Creek can sort of untangle from some of the issues that they’ve got in terms of continuing the franchise, we’re ready to go. So it’s just a question of when.” He added, “Of course, I’m not getting any younger, so I think we’ll drop the ‘young’ from the title,...

The very first Mission: Impossible movie opened with Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and the Imf team on a mission to prevent the theft of the CIA Noc list. The mission fails when the members of Hunt’s team are killed one by one, which was a surprising twist when the movie was released nearly thirty years ago. One member of the ill-fated Mission: Impossible team was played by Emilio Estevez, and the actor told Uproxx that Tom Cruise expressed regret at killing off his character so soon.
“The way Tom had explained it, he said, ‘Look, I’d love for you to come and join the cast. The whole opening number where everybody gets wiped out, it’s going to be a lot of well-known people and all of them are going to go uncredited and it’s really going to set up the level of peril for Ethan,’” Emilio Estevez explained.

Tom Cruise gave himself an impossible task: Smoothing things over with longtime pal Emilio Estevez.
According to Estevez in an Uproxx interview, Cruise regretted killing off his character in 1996 film “Mission: Impossible,” which kicked off an almost three-decade-long franchise. Cruise plays rogue CIA agent Ethan Hunt, with the original Brian de Palma film infamously having a bloody cold open killing off most of the A-lister cast.

You don’t have to ask me twice, I’m in.’ And then afterwards,...
