When Ilana Wolpert was studying English literature at the prestigious Duke University, she never imagined that one of her first loves – Shakespeare – would lead directly to writing R-rated movies.
But the writer found her life changed when she took a screenwriting class in her senior year, and her love for the classics led her to adapt Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing into a contemporary rom-com. The enemies-to-lovers romance became Anyone But You, and it's coming to streamers this Tuesday.
What's It About?
Ben and Bea meet in a coffee shop and form an instant connection. They spend a perfect day together – but the next morning their wires get crossed, their defenses go up, and they both blame each other for the relationship failing.
Six months later, Bea's sister is getting married. Ben's connection to the family means that they end up on the same flight, and start pushing each other's buttons right away.

Romantic comedies are alive and well, it seems, and we have a couple of emerging, A-list movie stars to thank for it. "Anyone But You" has officially crossed the $200 million mark at the box office in one of the most unlikely turnarounds for a movie in years, financially speaking. But the star power of Glen Powell ("Top Gun: Maverick") and Sydney Sweeney ("Euphoria") got the attention of the moviegoing masses and they turned this lower-mid-budget rom-com into the biggest hit the genre has seen in nearly a decade.
The Sony Pictures release has amassed $87 million domestically to go with a stellar $113 million internationally, per Variety. That puts it past the total of other recent hits in the genre, including "Ticket to Paradise" ($168 million), which starred both Julia Roberts and George Clooney, as well as "The Lost City" ($192 million), which was led by Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum. Anyone But You is getting a lot of attention from fans and especially industry specialists who are now just finding out that rom-coms can still make money at the box office. While the raunchy romantic comedy by the director Will Gluck (Friends with Benefits) isn’t exactly a masterpiece or an instant classic, it gives the viewers some much-deserved escape and a fun story, that they don’t have to wear 3D glasses for.
Starring Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria) and Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick), Anyone But You revolves around Ben and Bea, who meet each other by chance and have an amazing first date unfortunately that doesn’t last long, and both of them part ways but the kicker comes when after some time both of them unexpectedly find themselves at a destination wedding in Australia, and because of unexpected circumstances they decide to pretend to be a couple.

I'm about to propose a somewhat radical idea, but hear me out: What if enemies ... became lovers? Once upon a time, the studio system used to deliver multiple movies a year riffing on this classic rom-com premise, but recent decades have seen these exact sorts of vehicles for movie stars falling by the wayside more and more. After all, we just have to make room for more superhero movies like "Madame Web," don't we? But in a highly ironic twist, one disaster of a Sydney Sweeney-starring production has given way to another much more successful one -- and the same studio is responsible for both. Sensing a lesson here, folks? In short, long live rom-coms!
"Anyone But You" maybe didn't reinvent the wheel or anything, as laid out in Marshall Shaffer's review for /Film, but co-leads Sweeney and Glen Powell certainly managed to charm their ways into the hearts of audiences worldwide.

Michael ‘Duffy’ Duffield was a soldier, now he’s a drifter, dealing with Ptsd and living on the move. Max is just out of jail and looking for a way to make some money, and he sees Duffy’s skill with his fists as the way to do it. He just has to convince him to take part in some illegal underground fight clubs like the one run by Fosco. And, since Duffy could use some cash himself,...

Frank Grillo knows what he wants.
The erstwhile Crossbones of the MCU has crafted a niche for himself as a contemporary Charles Bronson over the last decade, parlaying mainstream buzz from projects like “The Purge 2” and Mma drama series “Warrior” into a string of superior indie action movies — even if he himself shies away from Bronson comparisons when speaking about his career.
“Not that I’m comparing myself to Charles Bronson, because I couldn’t,” Grillo told IndieWire during a recent interview over Zoom, adding with a laugh, “Charles Bronson never took his shirt off on a soap opera.”
With respect to Grillo, Bronson simply didn’t have the same range. Grillo emerged from a three-year run on “Guiding Light” in the late ’90s to a decade as a working actor before landing a juicy supporting role in the Liam Neeson-starring “The Grey.” Then came 2014 and his role...

How does one repay a team of producers for launching its highest grossing film of all time? Give them the key to the studio — literally.

In 1994, the film Bad Girls debuted. Drew Barrymore, Mary Stuart Masterson, Andie MacDowell, and Madeleine Stowe starred as four prostitutes out for vengeance in the Wild West.
But a cast reunion on Barrymore’s show brought out the tears, as Barrymore reunited Masterson and MacDowell with Dermot Mulroney, who played their ally Josh McCoy.
“You were so good to me, I really was like a lost seventeen-year-old,” Barrymore told Mulroney. “I was having so much fun, but I didn’t know how to take care of myself and you took such good care of me. You were so kind to me.”
Barrymore continued to thank Mulroney for protecting her and watching out for her.
“I’m so happy to see you,” Mulroney says. “Sorry guys, I cry now. I knew I was gonna and I came anyway. I decided I’m gonna go ahead and cry in public.”

Drew Barrymore and Dermot Mulroney had a tear-filled reunion when the actor surprised the talk show host on Thursday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show.
The Anyone But You star was one of three people who made an appearance and caught Barrymore off-guard, as the episode was only intended to be a sit-down with Andie MacDowell. The two co-starred in Bad Girls.
In honor of the 1994 film celebrating 30 years, MacDowell surprised Barrymore with Mulroney, their fellow co-star Mary Stuart Masterson and executive producer Lynda Obst, who made an appearance via video.
“I am freaking out right now,” Barrymore said, sitting alongside Mulroney, as they both got visibly emotional. “You were so good to me. I really was like a lost 17 year old. I know I was having so much fun, but I didn’t know how to take care of myself, and you took such good care of me.

Drew Barrymore is getting choked up after reuniting with a costar from three decades ago!
During a new episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the 48-year-old actress and talk show host chatted with her Bad Girls costars, Andie MacDowell and Mary Stuart Masterson.
Little did she know, they had another surprise for her: Dermot Mulroney, who also starred in the Western film.
Keep reading to find out more…
“Oh, another? Wait, what?” Drew said, confused when someone else seemed to be arriving. When it was Dermot who walked out (in Western attire for good measure), they both began to shed tears.
“I’m so happy to see you, I might cry,” Dermot said – and he definitely did.
“Oh my God, Dermot, I just was watching you in Anyone but You — which I love, by the way, it’s such a good movie,” Drew said between sobs.
She added, “You were so good to me.

Things aren't looking great at the box office right now, as there are very few big releases in theaters that are getting moviegoers out in meaningful numbers. But there is something good to focus on today as Sony's rom-com "Anyone But You" has continued to quietly defy expectations for over a full month now. The film crossed the $100 million milestone over the weekend and is arguably one of the most unlikely movies to ever hit that mark based on how things started.
"Anyone But You" added another $5.4 million to its ever-growing total over the weekend, per The Numbers. That was good enough for a fourth place finish in its fifth frame, which is impressive. More importantly, director Will Gluck's romantic comedy has now earned $64.2 million domestically to go with $35.9 million internationally for a grand total of $100.1 million worldwide. Given its $25 million budget, this is going to be a huge win for Sony Pictures.

Brett Wagner, who donned the Leatherface in the 2003 version of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre before suffering from heat stroke during the production, will also be among the celebrity guests. Dubbed “The Lost Leatherface,” he dawned the iconic flesh mask as he claimed the remake’s first victim, played by Eric Balfour.
“We were filming the summer months in Austin,” Wagner explains. “It was so hot. I felt it coming. I hit the ground.” He returned to finish the scene after rehydrating, but he describes the effects of the injury as “the most pain I’ve ever been in in my life.” Unable to wait for his full recovery,...

"We need to end this." Quiver has revealed an official trailer for an action movie called Lights Out, the latest from filmmaker Christian Sesma reteaming with Dermot Mulroney & Scott Adkins after making Section 8 in 2022. This will be opening in both theaters and digital starting in February next month. A drifting ex-soldier turns underground fighter with the help of a just released ex-con, which ends up pitting them both against corrupt cops and hired killers gunning for them and all those they care about. Pretty much everyone is out to get them! The cast features Frank Grillo, Mekhi Phifer, Jaime King, with Dermot Mulroney and Scott Adkins, as well as Amaury Nolasco, Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone, Erica Peeples, Juju Chan Szeto, and Paul Sloan. This "action-packed thrill ride" actually looks solid, better than expected if I'm honest. A seriously intense throwback to the all-out, non-stop action the entire time, 90s heydays.

The first trailer for Lights Out starring Frank Grillo, Mekhi Phifer, Jaime King, with Dermot Mulroney and Scott Adkins has been released.
In the film, a homeless veteran, Michael “Duffy” Duffield (Grillo), meets a talkative Ex-Con, Max Bomer (Phifer) who notices Duffy’s skills after he gets into a bar fight and offers him a well-paying “job” competing in underground fight clubs. The pair form an unlikely partnership after their first fight and decide to travel to LA so Duffy can atone for his past and Max can pay back a crime boss, Sage Parker (Mulroney). Duffy enters Sage’s fight club and eventually wins, but it also gets him tied up in the crime world and offered jobs he can’t refuse, including one with Sage’s partner and Police officer, Ellen Ridgway (King). The deeper Duffy goes in this world, the more deadly it gets.

The first couple of weekends of 2024 have been relatively quiet so far as the box office is concerned.
