Lately, Dakota Johnson has been battling a sea of negative criticism. Ever since the trailer for her critically blasted superhero movie, Madame Web, first debuted, the actress has suffered trolling. The negativity only intensified once the Sony flick was released, and the aftermath of it can still be felt.
Dakota Johnson in Madame Web
Yet, the actress does not seem to be deterred by all that is negative but instead is gearing up for another theatrical release. Starring alongside the controversial star Sean Penn in the upcoming film Daddio, Johnson is playing a cab passenger named Girlie.

A selection at Telluride and TIFF last year, Christy Hall’s directorial debut Daddio follows Dakota Johnson’s character who picks up a cab at the JFK airport on her way home. Driving the cab is Sean Penn’s character and what unfurls is a feature-length conversation on pain, romance, and secrets. Originally conceived as a stage play, the film never quite escapes those trappings to deliver something truly cinematic, but it does provide a decent enough showcase for both actors. Ahead of June 28 release from Sony Classics, the trailer has now arrived.
Here’s the synopsis: “Daddio celebrates the power found in those rare moments of pure human connection, even with an unlikely person. This highly contained, yet kinetic character-study — encapsulated in one single cab ride — explores the complexities inherent to the secrets we keep, particularly the ones locked away on our phones. It’s about truth and illusion,...

Dakota Johnson is a passenger in both life and a yellow taxi cab, seeking connection with whomever is most near. For her, that turns out to be crass driver Clark, played by Sean Penn in the two-hander drama “Daddio.”
Their shared journey is from New York City’s John F. Kennedy Airport to Hell’s Kitchen, with Johnson’s character Girlie determined to get to Clark’s innermost being. He’s not into it. The indie feature written and directed by Christy Hall debuted at TIFF 2023 and will next play at Tribeca 2024.
Johnson produces alongside TeaTime Pictures partner Ro Donnelly, who told IndieWire that Girlie is emotionally “reflective” of the below-the-line team behind the feature itself.

“When Jane Fonda calls, you show up,” explained John Legend, tickling the ivories in front of a large crowd of glittery art lovers, environmentalists and celebs. “Wouldn’t you?”
The large artist, art collector and celeb crowd mingling in the white chandelier-strewn tent behind Gagosian Gallery made it pretty clear they not only would, but did. Fonda, along with gallerist Larry Gagosian and Christie’s, organized the evening, titled “Art For a Safe and Healthy California” — an art sale to support California’s grassroots fight against Big Oil, in an attempt to protect neighborhoods from toxic oil drilling. With so many years of activism and fundraising dedicated to feminist, pacifist and environmental issues — organizing, fundraising, holding benefits, walkouts, protests, not to mention getting arrested four times — Jane Fonda is now going up against Big Oil.
Nothing the lifelong rights fighter can’t handle, of course.
“What’s more important than the destruction of our planet?...

A landscape gardener and his estranged daughter go on a therapeutic road trip to battle substance abuse in this unbearably cute nepo vanity project
Ewan McGregor co-stars with his daughter Clara McGregor in this avowedly personal story of a guy going on a road trip with his estranged 20-year-old daughter from his first marriage, dealing with trust and intimacy issues, and their own previous battles with substance abuse. In theory, it should be possible to do a film like this without it being a complete toe-curling nepo vanity project. I, for example, very much enjoyed Flag Day, the film Sean Penn made with his daughter Dylan. But this unbearably cute joint selfie of a movie is gruesomely indulgent and entitled from the first; it allows Ewan McGregor little or no opportunity to show his natural wit and flair and there is oddly no real chemistry between him and his co-star.

You may recall that this January, Sir Elton John became the 19th person ever to win the coveted Egot by claiming his first Emmy. But what you may be less familiar with is the fact that Emma Stone can become just the 20th actress (and the 25th entertainer overall) to claim an Eggocc if she triumphs in the race for the Best Drama Actress prize at this year’s Emmy Awards for her performance in the Paramount+/Showtime series “The Curse.” Too, Robert Downey Jr. is poised to be only the sixth actor to claim an Eggocc should he take home the Emmy prize in September for Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor for his work in the HBO limited series “The Sympathizer.”
What is an Eggocc, you ask? Why, it’s Emmy, Golden Globe, Oscar and Critics Choice statuettes, of course. And as just alluded to, winning all four...

If one thinks of pop music and its influence in the world, it is difficult to look past an artist like Madonna. In many ways, the iconic singer was a pioneer in the genre and is associated with some of the most evergreen songs that have become cult classics over the years. In addition to her charismatic personality, Madonna has also had a colorful personal life when it comes to her various romances.
Madonna in her hit single Vogue
The Vogue crooner has been married to A-list Hollywood celebrities like Sean Penn and Guy Ritchie, and has also been involved in a short relationship with Warren Beatty with whom she co-starred with in Dick Tracy. While the pop star was pretty open and candid when talking about Beatty in The Howard Stern Show, she refrained from getting too personal when pushed to comment on her s*x life with the actor.

After the March 28 friends, family, and industry screening for Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” at Universal’s CityWalk AMC in IMAX, reactions were wild. Some said it was his most ambitious film since “Apocalypse Now;” another described it to Puck as “batshit crazy.” Made for $120 million and bankrolled entirely by Coppola through the sale of one of his vineyards, it incorporates new VFX techniques — ones, the filmmakers hope, will be seen on the biggest screens possible.
For that to happen, it will need a major theatrical deal and the filmmakers are now in talks with distributors and major studios. However, those entities have been particularly risk averse these days — and while Coppola is a legend, he hasn’t made a commercial success in three decades.
The film’s stars include Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, and Giancarlo Esposito; maybe, say, Paramount or Universal want to be back in the Coppola business.

Actor Tye Sheridan spoke about his experience on the set of the drama Asphalt City in his new uInterview.
Asphalt City centers around a young paramedic (Sheridan), who is assigned the night shift with a seasoned New York City veteran (Sean Penn).
When asked how he was able to adapt his mindset to that of a medical worker, Sheridan told uInterview founder Erik Meers, “Paramedics are very unique. Really understanding from a technical standpoint how they operate, but also, what they experience on a day-to-day basis, on a more emotional, mental level as well, what are the things that they struggle with. I think was super crucial to us in understanding how to convey them in a really authentic light, and I think that was always the intention of the movie, to do something more authentic and something hyper-real.”

IFC Films’ Late Night With The Devil topped the specialty market in its second week, as a Tollywood and a Bollywood film both made the top ten in a rare occurrence. Strong horror and Indian fare have helped buoy the box office since Covid. They continue to fill in the top ten, including this week, which boasts a monstrous hit in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire — but is a neighborhood with fewer overall wide release due to Hollywood strikes.
Scary first: Late Night With The Devil by Australian duo Colin and Cameron Cairnes stars David Dastmalchian, perfection as a late 1970s talk show host whose quest for ratings on a Halloween night broadcast goes nowhere good, unleashing evil into the nation’s living rooms. It grossed $2.2 million on 1,442 screens in week two, for a cume of $6.2 million. The film is in the top ten again, at no. 7.

Plot: Asphalt City follows Ollie Cross, a young paramedic assigned to the NYC night shift with an uncompromising and seasoned partner Gene Rutkovsky. Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s Asphalt City was originally titled Black Flies, after the Shannon Burke novel from which it’s adapted, when it premiered last year at Cannes. For a film about the difficult situations that E.M.T. workers have to deal with on New York City’s streets, Asphalt City has an appropriate directness. But it’s Black Flies that more accurately reflects the film’s lurid register. It’s a reference to an encounter that rookie E.M.T. worker Ollie Cross (Tye Sheridan) has on the job that echoes a childhood trauma, but the way the filmmakers shoot the moment, it’s as if they’re touting their belief in New York as a rotted corpse.
Regardless of what it goes by, the film reveals its agenda from the moment that Ollie walks to a crime scene in the projects and the herky-jerky camera approximates his addled consciousness. Gene...

Regarded as one of the most versatile actors in the industry, Nicolas Cage has been part of various genres of movies, which has over the years earned him a cult following. After starring in 1987’s Moonstruck, the actor received critical success, and for his work in Leaving Las Vegas, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor. The actor witnessed a career slump from 1989 to 1994 where none of his movies worked at the box office.
In addition to facing a slump in his professional life, the actor got embroiled in a few legal problems, blew up his $150 million fortune on bizarre spending, owed the IRS $6.3 million, faced tax problems, and was close to announcing bankruptcy. The actor took up every possible role that was offered to him to get out of debt, and at the same time, he was blacklisted from purchasing a car from a very renowned brand.

Bruce Timm’s iconic Superman series, Superman: The Animated Series, is one of the rare few projects to have done the character justice. The 1996 series was one of the first to make the character seem realistic, rather than boring or too self-righteous. So much so that many would call him the most accurate version of the character.
Bruce Timm’s Superman: The Animated Series
There is absolutely no doubt that Timm’s contributions helped considerably in making the show what it is today. Being excellent as both an animator and producer, the projects that he has been involved with have become some of the best in DC’s animated universe. This is why it is interesting to find out that he created the Superman series out of spite towards one of the most respected filmmakers of all time.

Looking back at Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 crime thriller Pulp Fiction we can all agree that the casting of John Travolta, Uma Thurman, and Bruce Willis was top-notch, alongside the impeccable storyline. But what if we say, Willis was never on Tarantino’s long list of potential actors for the role of Butch Coolidge.
Nicolas Cage in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022)
According to reports, Quentin Tarantino suggested Sean Penn, Nicolas Cage, and Johnny Depp, for the iconic role. Suggesting a lengthy list of names ahead of casting, Tarantino wanted to star the above-mentioned A-listers in his crime thriller over Bruce Willis. But things worked in favor of the Die Hard star, as he eventually appeared alongside Uma Thurman’s Mia.

When the National Press Club hosted a post-screening panel on the upcoming movie Anna, about Russian journalist and Vladimir Putin critic Anna Politkovskaya, the conversation — to not much of a surprise — led to Donald Trump and what his potential return to the White House would mean for democracy.

Sony Pictures Classics announced on Tuesday that it will release its indie drama Daddio, starring Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn, in theaters nationwide on June 28.
Marking the feature directorial debut of Christy Hall, who also penned the script, Daddio world premiered at last year’s Telluride Film Festival before going on to screen in Toronto. The film is described as character-study, encapsulated in one single cab ride, that explores the complexities inherent to the secrets we keep, particularly the ones locked away on our phones. It’s about truth and illusion, how we so effortlessly substitute one for the other out of survival — about the hurtful memories of childhood, past trauma manifesting in profound ways, and the dance between the pain and poetry that is the human experience.

I received Madonna’s fourth studio album, Like a Prayer, on cassette for my 10th birthday. The liner notes were scented with patchouli oil to evoke the sensory experience of walking into a Catholic church, and you could smell it even through the shrink wrap. After devouring some cake, I rushed to my room to listen to the album.
It wasn’t like anything I’d grown up hearing on Top 40 radio, including Madonna’s own past hits, which I was only peripherally aware of. “Oh Father” sounded familiar, a cousin to “Live to Tell,” but it was darker and weirder. “Till Death Do Us Part” was more my speed, but the song’s lyrics were confusing and unsettling to my unrefined ears. Rolling Stone called it “as close to art as pop music gets.”

At the inaugural Academy Awards in 1929, native Pennsylvanian Janet Gaynor made history as the first American-born performer to win an Oscar by taking the Best Actress prize for her body of work in “7th Heaven,” “Street Angel,” and “Sunrise.” Over the subsequent 95 years, 215 more thespians originating from the United States won the academy’s favor, meaning the country has now produced 68.1% of all individual acting Oscar recipients. Considering the last decade alone, the rate of such winners is even higher, at 70.3%.
At this point, 96.8% of American-born acting Oscar victors have hailed from one of 34 actual states. Of those constituting the remainder, three originated from the federal District of Columbia, while four were born in the territory of Puerto Rico. New York (home to 49 winners) is the most common birth state among the entire group, followed by California (34), Illinois (13), Massachusetts (11), and Pennsylvania (11).

2023 was a miraculous year for German actress Sandra Huller. Not only did she receive critical acclaim for her riveting portrayal of a woman on trial for murdering her husband in France’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” she was also praised for her role as the wife of a Nazi commander in the United Kingdom’s German-language “The Zone of Interest.” Indeed, there was much interest in Huller and her two films. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for “Anatomy.” And both “Anatomy” and “Zone” landed slots for Best Picture, as well as Best Director bids for Justine Triet and Jonathan Glazer, respectively.
As I was speaking to academy members ahead of last Sunday’s ceremony, I detected a surprisingly robust amount of support for Huller. And many of those who had voted for her mentioned her work in “The Zone of Interest.” It really did seem...

Across his nine features thus far, Paul Thomas Anderson has never had a prime summer release, but that is about to change when it comes to his currently untitled, maybe Vineland tenth feature. With production still underway across California with the cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, Wood Harris, Alana Haim, and Chase Infiniti, Warner Bros. has now set an August 8, 2025 wide release, including an IMAX run, for what they describe as an “event film.”
It’s not the first time the director’s work has been seen on an IMAX screen as his Thom Yorke collaboration Anima received a limited run in the format. The director also used VistaVision for Anima in 2019, which likely doubled as a test for this new feature,...
