It seems like it has been a hot minute since we have had a good hip-hop feud. As the beef between Kendrick Lamar and Drake takes the mainstream by storm, it is difficult to not remember feuds of days gone by, ones that defined the entire generation of hip hop that they occurred in.

While the feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar picks up steam, we take a look back at three iconic feuds in hip hop through its history, the sort that is still remembered for their stinging bars and witty writing, or even the story of what started them, and how the artists used their talents to flyte their opponents into obscurity (or tried to).

Madonna made headlines 30 years ago when she dropped the F-bomb 14 times (including her description of host David Letterman as a “sick f—k”), made sexual innuendos, and refused to get off the stage during her Late Show appearance on March 31, 1994. Arguably, however, Letterman fired the first shot while introducing Madonna, saying that the pop star had “slept with some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry.” In 2015, Madonna told Howard Stern she was in “a weird mood” that day in 1994. “I was dating Tupac Shakur at the time, and the thing is, he got me all riled up about life in general,” she said. As you’ll see below, though, Madonna’s Late Show appearance is one of many late-night interviews that took a controversial, scandalous, or chaotic turn — and two even went down on the same night. SXSW 2024 is hurtling toward its conclusion, and the music portion of the festival entered the weekend with a bang on Friday. American Fiction’s Jeffrey Wright won best lead performance for his role in the Amazon MGM Studios comedy, presented to him by his fellow Oscar nominee Colman Domingo. “It’s funny, you go to these award shows, and you kind of grow tired of them,” laughed Wright. “And then you get one. On Nov. 2, a brand-new Beatles song called "Now and Then" hit streaming services. It features contributions from all four of the band's members, in spite of the fact that John Lennon and George Harrison died decades ago.
Almost as highly publicized as the song's existence itself is the fact that it was made possible thanks to AI, which was able to split John Lennon's original 1977 demo of the song into individual tracks that could then be mixed and mastered. That work, oddly enough, is one of the more straightforward contributions that AI has made to music so far.

The State won’t seek the death penalty for what authorities are calling Davis’ role as “shot-caller” in a drive-by shooting a block off the Las Vegas Strip that mortally wounded the 25-year-old Shakur and also wounded Death Row Records godfather Marion “Suge” Knight.

In early 1991, 20-year-old Tupac Shakur was torn between ambitions of acting and rapping, and struggling to catch a break on both fronts. He had studied theater at the Baltimore School for the Arts and toured with the west coast hip-hop collective Digital Underground, but acting opportunities were scarce and he had yet to finish the demo tape that would launch him to stardom. His luck would turn when Digital Underground’s road manager, Sleuth, received a call from Cara Lewis, the group’s booking agent at William Morris. A film director named Ernest Dickerson was looking for actors for a movie called Juice and they invited Money-b, a fellow member of the collective, to audition. Dickerson had earned acclaim for his work as Spike Lee’s director of photography on a run of films, including She’s Gotta Have It, School Daze, Do the Right Thing, Mo’ Better Blues, and Jungle Fever.

Following a week of wild, eyebrow-raising revelations during his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s press tour for her new memoir, “Worthy,” Will Smith shared what he called an “official statement” to his Instagram.
The video statement, posted to his Reels, wasn’t what many expected — but the actor appears to be taking it all in stride.
“I’ve got something for you, here’s the thing,” Smith began in the video, which was shared under the caption “Official Statement” on Tuesday. “My opinion of.. of the –”
Then, humorously, before Smith can finish his thought, he fakes a sneeze, which blasts the video back, off into ever-expanding natural locales, as if to indicate that there are bigger things to worry about than the intimate details of his marriage.

Jada Pinkett Smith, apparently, is nowhere near done opening up about the intimate details of her and Will Smith’s relationship, as she said the two have discussed collaborating on a book.
As Pinkett Smith’s memoir “Worthy” hit shelves on Tuesday, the actress shared on SiriusXM’s “Sway in the Morning” with Sway Calloway that there’s a possibility that she would work on a second installment to the book — and it would be cowritten by her actor-husband.
“I know it seems like it’s a lot of life because it is a lot of life in the book, but it’s very streamlined,” Pinkett Smith said. “There’s layers and layers and layers and layers. There’s no way I could have put it all in one book. There’s no way, you know, so there’s definitely other books to come.”

When Will Smith hit Chris Rock after the comedian joked about Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head at the Oscars, she assumed it was part of a skit.
In her new memoir “Worthy,” Pinkett Smith reflects on the night of the infamous incident, including the moment she understood the gravity of the situation when Smith returned to his seat and yelled at Rock, “Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth.”
Several people checked in on Pinkett Smith at every commercial break, she recalls, including Lupita Nyong’o, Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban, Ramsey Naito, Tiffany Haddish and Queen Latifah. When the show cut to the first commercial after the slap, Denzel Washington and Bradley Cooper went to Smith and “huddled up, trying to ground him.”
The Oscars slap, however, is only a 14-page chapter in Pinkett Smith’s tell-all memoir. From Tupac Shakur’s marriage proposal to her views on Scientology,...

From the moment Jada Pinkett Smith began promoting her new memoir, "Worthy," she was making headlines. In the weeks leading up to its Oct. 17 release, Pinkett Smith steadily dropped tidbits of information while promoting the book - though nothing was more shocking than the revelation that she and her husband, Will Smith, have been separated since 2016.
But her and Smith's relationship is far from the only topic that "Worthy" takes an honest, unvarnished look at. Pinkett Smith leaves few stones unturned in the memoir, opening up about everything from her early days dealing drugs in Baltimore to her Ptsd and dissociative disorder diagnoses later in life. She also offers an intimate window into her childhood, exploring the grandmother who helped shape her worldview, as well as her father's inconsistent presence and her parents' struggles with addiction.
Along the way, she dives deeply into the spiritual practices that have helped her survive and process her traumas,...

Jada Pinkett Smith's memoir, "Worthy," has generated tons of headlines from the minute she began promoting it. But under the shocking revelations is a book full of deep insights about learning to face the past and using new insight to alchemize it into something different. A lot of the memoir focuses on key relationships in Pinkett Smith's life, from her close bond with Tupac Shakur to her marriage with Will Smith. But ultimately, the thread that ties the whole story together from beginning to end is Pinkett Smith's grandmother Marion Martin Banfield and the garden that taught her key life lessons.
As a young child, Pinkett Smith and her mother frequently lived with her grandmother, who had a sprawling garden. Pinkett Smith's mother was 17 when she gave birth to her, and her parents' marriage lasted just a year, so they often needed a place to stay. During those years,...

Jada Pinkett Smith has opened up about the arrest of Duane “Keffe D” Davis in connection to the 1996 shooting death of Tupac Shakur. The actress and Shakur were close friends who met one another when they were both students at Baltimore School of the Arts. Smith updated her Instagram Story with a simple message that read, “Now I hope we can get some answers and have some closure. R.I.P. Pac.”
