Nishijima broke out internationally with his lead role of theater director Yusuke Kafuku in Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Cannes-premiering Japanese drama Drive My Car, which was nominated for four Academy Awards, walking away with the Oscar for Best International Feature. Most recently, Nishijima signed on to star alongside Austin Butler, Jeremy Allen White and Anna Sawai in A24’s crime thriller Enemies, from writer-director Henry Dunham, which shoots in Chicago this summer. Keanu Reeves’ The Matrix Almost Went Full Diva But Queen of Pop Flaked On It
Image
The Matrix could have looked very different if any of the initial actors who were approached for various roles had taken up the offer to join the film. Among the actors that were expected to be a part of the franchise were big names like Will Smith, who was offered the role of Neo. Other actors that were expected to be part of the project included Johnny Depp, Val Kilmer, and Brad Pitt.

While the former was the first choice for The Wachowskis, the latter two were who Warner Bros. wanted to be a part of the film. Another celebrity was expected to be in the film before she actually decided to opt out. Actors like Gary Oldman and Samuel L. Jackson were considered for the part of Morpheus. In another world, Madonna would have joined the cast of The Matrix too.

Madonna regrets turning down The Matrix Keanu Reeves...

15 Most Underrated TV Shows On Disney+
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Disney has been making entertainment magic for more than 100 years, but in recent years, Disney+ has become the go-to streaming service for fans who want to rewatch the movies and shows that they love the most. Some people head to the famed Disney princesses (which /Film has ranked), while others revisit live-action adventures like "Tron." It's easy to immediately go for the comfort food, but Disney+ offers more than the popular stuff that people make a beeline for.

Amid popular TV shows like "Boy Meets World" and "Lizzie McGuire" (which was cancelled twice), Disney+ has plenty of shows that didn't get the recognition they deserved when they premiered. This gave them an underdog status that could have been brought on by over-saturation of content or a storyline that was ahead of its time. These forgotten shows hold a special place within the Disney catalog,...

Nicole Kidman Pushes Back on Industry Ageism at Kering Women in Motion Gala in Cannes: ‘Invest in Us and Believe in Us Because Our Voices Are So Important’
Image
One would expect Nicole Kidman to be quite used to being honored, considering she has an Academy Award, five Golden Globes, a BAFTA, two Emmys, the Cannes Film Festival’s 70th anniversary prize and the Venice Film Festival’s best actress award among those lining her trophy case. But the legendary actor was still moved by the gesture of being named the Kering Women in Motion awardee on Sunday night at the luxury fashion house’s 10th annual gala during the Cannes Film Festival.

“I’m so happy to be here supporting women’s voices in cinema,” Kidman said as she floated down the press line outside of the glamorous dinner held at the Place de la Castre, overlooking the Croisette. “I’m an advocate and want to continue moving forward with my pledge. It ain’t over.”

Following a clip reel of her greatest performances, including “Moulin Rouge,” “Far and Away...

Ang Lee ‘struggling’ to get a greenlight for his Bruce Lee biopic
Image
In discussion for at least three years, Ang Lee’s biopic about martial arts legend Bruce Lee appears to be struggling to get the go-ahead from Sony Pictures.

A director who’s repeatedly switched genres over his career, Ang Lee hopes to return to the martial arts realm of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon with a biopic about Bruce Lee. In a recent interview with Deadline, however, it sounds as though the untitled film is stuck in pre-production.

In his feature about Lee, journalist Mike Fleming Jr says that, at the time of meeting the director, “he is struggling to hit a budget number and a green light from Sony Pictures.”

The Bruce Lee film first became public knowledge in December 2022, when it emerged that Mason Lee – Ang Lee’s son – was to play the legendary martial arts star, who died in 1973 aged 32. It was said at the time that Mason...

Why Michelle Yeoh Rejected A Wai Lin Cameo In The James Bond Movie Die Another Day
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

There are few franchises in the history of cinema that can rival that of "James Bond." Created by author Ian Fleming, the spy known as 007 made himself known to the world thanks to Sean Connery's portrayal in 1962's smash hit "Dr. No." Ever since, even after Connery's tenure ended, Bond has been a staple of the silver screen.

Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh made her mark on the series with her role as Wai Lin in 1997's "Tomorrow Never Dies." Yeoh was the main Bond girl in Pierce Brosnan's second entry as Bond, following in the footsteps of "GoldenEye," which successfully revived the series after a long absence. Yeoh, it turns out, could have returned once more in Brosnan's final "Bond" movie as well, namely 2002's "Die Another Day." So, what happened? Why didn't Yeoh return?

"I was asked...

Ang Lee Reveals Why ‘Brokeback Mountain’ Restored His Faith In Filmmaking: “I’m Still Standing, Still Making Movies, Thanks To That Movie”
Image
Two of Ang Lee’s most disruptive films celebrate anniversaries this year; they may be five years apart, but the connective tissue between them is undeniable. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) was such an intense high-wire act, the grueling shoot in China left Lee barely able to stand and fully intending to give it all up. It was Lee’s father who made his son promise to try one more time, because retirement, he thought, would set a bad example for the filmmaker’s son. Lee’s father died in 2004, weeks after making his son promise to give it one more go, and Lee kept that promise with 2005’s Brokeback Mountain, an experience that made the filmmaker fall back in love with storytelling, fueling everything he has done since including Life of Pi, which brought him his second Oscar for directing.

When I meet Lee in his Manhattan offices, he is...

Netflix's Long-Gestating Gears of War Movie Finally Moves Forward With High-Octane Director
Image
Gears of War is one of the most iconic third-person shooters of all time, balancing action, storytelling, and visuals. Recently it was announced that the video game would get a movie adaptation. Director David Leitch will helm the project to bring Gears of War to life on the big screen.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Leitch is in negotiations to lead the Gears of War franchise into live-action adaptations. Netflix's plan, which was first hatched in 2022 when they acquired the media rights for the franchise, starts with a Leitch-directed feature film, followed up by an adult animated series. The streamer managed to nab the rights to Gears of War right on the game's 16th anniversary, with the game being released in November 2006.

Leitch seems a perfectly suited director to see this project through, as he has an impressive and varied resume in the action genre. His most notorious project is...

‘Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ Adds ‘Karate Kid: Legends’ Star to Prequel
Image
Lionsgate’s return to Panem just got even more exciting. Ben Wang, the breakout star of American Born Chinese and the upcoming Karate Kid: Legends, has officially been cast as Wyatt Callow — the male District 12 tribute in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The upcoming prequel will serve as the next film in Suzanne Collins’ blockbuster dystopian saga. Wang joins an already stacked cast that includes Joseph Zada as a young Haymitch Abernathy, Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird, Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Maya Hawke as Wiress, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee, and Lili Taylor as Mags.

Set 24 years before the original Hunger Games trilogy, Sunrise on the Reaping opens on the day of the 50th Hunger Games — the notoriously bloody Second Quarter Quell. Fans of the franchise will remember that Haymitch’s brutal victory in that Quell became a defining chapter in his character’s tragic backstory.

Wicked: For Good - Glinda And Elphaba Stand Opposed On First Official Poster For Jon M. Chu's Sequel
Image
Universal and director Jon M. Chu's Wicked sequel, which was recently re-titled Wicked: For Good, is set to take flight this November, and the first poster has now been officially released online after it was originally spotted in the wild at CinemaCon back in March.

The one-sheet features friends turned adversaries Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande) facing-off on opposing cliffsides as Madame Morrible's (Michelle Yeoh) flying monkeys approach in the background.

Part 1 took in an impressive $744.07 million worldwide, which may not sound like too much when you consider that some blockbusters are still clearing a billion, but it was enough to make the movie the highest-grossing film adaptation of a Broadway musical.

In a recent interview, Chu described his sequel as a “doozy,” adding: “I did not know the context of where we’d be in society right now. It becomes eight times more relevant than...

A Former James Bond Star Casts Doubt On A Once-Planned Spin-Off Movie
Image
/Film has previously reported on MGM's efforts to make a female-led James Bond spin-off, an ambition the studio had since as early as 1997. It seems that Michelle Yeoh's appearance in that year's Bond flick, "Tomorrow Never Dies," impressed the studio heads, and many of them felt that it was high time to invent a female counterpart to the notoriously male-centric series. For a while, MGM appeared to be courting Yeoh for additional movies -- they also wanted her to play Pierce Brosnan's co-lead in 2002's "Die Another Day" -- but she was uninterested. Their interest was inflamed anew, however, when Halle Berry took Yeoh's place for "Die Another Day," playing an all-new character named Jinx.

Jinx proved to be so popular that MGM immediately made concrete plans to give the character her own starring role. The Broccolis approved of the idea, and Neal Purvis and Robert Wade...

Six of Cinema’s Super-Producers Offer Their Best Advice
Image
What is a producer’s job? On a fundamental level, it’s to put all the pieces together that allow for film and television to be made. Maybe it’s pairing the right material with the right director. Maybe it’s location scouting. Maybe it’s having 10 dinners with that one actor who won’t commit. The role of the producer is every-changing, but there are certain constants the best in the business have learned to adhere to.

Whether it’s Christine Vachon using Celine Song’s script for “Past Lives” as a selling point for the project or Ram Bergman advising Rian Johnson to make “Brick” on a smaller budget than he intended, the greatest producers in cinema today know that setting a project up for success means pinpointing its value. This isn’t just on a financial level, but in terms of popular culture as well. Keep reading...

Michelle Yeoh to Lead Stylized Action Film ‘The Surgeon’ From ‘The Resident’ Co-Creator Roshan Sethi and ‘John Wick’ Collaborators, 193 Launching in Cannes
Image
Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh is set to do some ass kicking in scrubs as the lead in newly-announced stylized action film “The Surgeon.”

The feature — hoped to be the first in a franchise — is being introduced to buyers in Cannes by Patrick Wachsberger’s 193.

“The Surgeon” comes from writer/director Rohsan Sethi, who also happens to be a physician, and extends a history of successful action collaborations for Wachsberger and producer Basil Iwankyk, who previously combined on “John Wick,” which Iwankyk produced and Wachsberger distributed as chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.

In the film, Yeoh will play a retired surgeon who is abducted and forced to operate on a mystery patient. Though greatly outnumbered, her captors have overlooked her greatest weapon: 35 years of surgical experience, leading to what the synopsis describes as an “explosive and brutal confrontation” during which she outwits and cuts down her enemies “in a...

Image
Patrick Wachsberger and Legendary’s Jv 193 will launch sales at the Cannes market on action film The Surgeon, which will star Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh and be produced by John Wick outfit Thunder Road.

Pic is written and directed by Roshan Sethi, a physician, Indie Spirit winner, and co-creator of hit Fox series The Resident. WME independent is representing domestic rights.

The film will follow a retired surgeon (Yeoh) who is abducted and forced to operate on a mystery patient. Though greatly outnumbered, her captors have overlooked her greatest weapon: 35-years of surgical experience, leading to an explosive and brutal confrontation during which she outwits and cuts down her enemies in a visual style that defies anything you have seen before. There are hopes it can become a franchise.

Iwanyk and Erica Lee are producing for Thunder Road alongside John Schoenfelder and Russell Ackerman for Neotext, Adam Kolbrenner for Lit Entertainment,...

Image
“Wicked” director Jon M. Chu was honored with the Legend award at the fourth annual Gold House Gold Gala on Saturday in Los Angeles.

Chu, a Gold House co-founder and progenitor of the history-making #GoldOpen movement, received the A1 in Entertainment and Media for his historic directorial accomplishments in “Wicked” and to celebrate its forthcoming sequel, “Wicked: For Good.”

The filmmaker talked about how far Asian representation had come in the last ten years. Speaking to the audience, which included H.E.R., “Moana 2” director Dana LeDoux Miller, Ang Lee, Sandra Oh and Megan Thee Stallion, Chu said, “We’re not just guests at the table anymore. We built the damn house, and guess what? It’s made of gold, and we’ve got more work to do.” Chu added, “I’m ready, if you all are.”

Chu recalled being on the set of his 2013 film “G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” and how he felt “nervous as hell.

“Being Asian isn’t a trend to me”: It’s Such a Crying Shame We Forget MCU’s First Asian Superhero Was Never Shang-Chi
Image
Yeah, she was in the MCU before Simu Liu even picked up Shang-Chi’s costume for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Fans may not know her ethnicity, but iconic actress Chloe Bennet is of Asian descent.

People forgot about her after Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. concluded with a finale in 2020, and it’s a shame that no one really remembers that Bennet was the first Asian superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe long before Liu’s Shang-Chi! However, when asked about it, Bennet revealed that she doesn’t really care for it.

Being Asian isn’t a “trend” for Chloe Bennet

There was a time when Asian actors and actresses faced discrimination in Hollywood. Although legends like Jackie Chan made a name for themselves, others like Michelle Yeoh had to fight for their awards and fame.

Italy’s Minerva Pictures and Tvco will be launching international pre-sales on “Fish” at the upcoming Cannes Marché du Film. The English-language film is expected to go into production in Venice in early 2026.

Roth, who recently wrapped production on Netflix’s hotly anticipated “Peaky Blinders” film opposite Cillian Murphy and Barry Keoghan, will be playing a character called Professor Fish Osborne. He is “a brilliant but reclusive art historian who is undergoing a mysterious transformation: he is slowly becoming a fish,” as the provided synopsis puts it. As the professor’s secret unravels, Billie (Schafer) and other students of his begin to perceive their own identities through new lenses. “Mutation becomes not a curse, but a radical act of liberation,” the synopsis says.

“There’s a Lot of Work To Do”: ‘Wicked: For Good’ Composer Feels the “Pressure” in New Sequel Update
Image
Just a few months after Wicked left theaters with a rich box office haul of more than $750 million, its sequel got an intriguing update. Wicked: For Good has been set for release later this year on November 21, almost one year after the original film. This came as a shock to some upon its announcement, but it lined up with the news that the original and sequel were filmed back to back, which proved to be a smart decision after Wicked’s box office success. Wicked: For Good composer Stephen Schwartz, who also composed the Broadway musical and the first film, recently sat down for an interview with Variety, and he provided a status update on the sequel, admitting that he’s feeling the “pressure”:

“We are trying to keep our heads down and focus because there’s a lot of work to do, but it is exciting, and it...

Avatar: Fire And Ash First Still Features Guardians Of The Galaxy Star Zoe Saldaña As Neytiri
Image
Avatar: The Way of Water concluded with the death of Jake Sully and Neytiri's firstborn son, Neteyam. Unsurprisingly, that's put them both back on the warpath against the Rda, and the "absolute devastation" will fuel the matriarch's actions heading into Avatar: Fire and Ash.

"That pain is seamlessly followed up on," Zoe Saldaña tells Empire Online (via SFFGazette.com). "And because it doesn’t really have anywhere to go, and doesn’t go away, rage can also come from it. [The Sullys] are going to be tested as a family."

"Not only would everything that’s happening compel her to question the bond she has with her husband," the actress adds, "but also her bond with herself, her people, her land, and the way the Na’vi are. She’s going to question everything."

However, Neytiri will supposedly "meet her match" in Oona Chaplin's Varang, the leader of the Mangkwan Ash Clan.

Crazy Rich Asians actor teases return in Max series: 'Everybody's excited'
Image
I love everything about the Crazy Rich Asians movie, and we've all been eagerly waiting for the promised Crazy Rich Asians 2. There's still not many updates about the second film, but it has been confirmed that a series at Max is coming. While initially thinking this would be with a whole new cast, it sounds like there's several original cast members coming back to reprise their roles.

In an interview with Today, Henry Golding, who played the co-lead Nick Young, suggests that he's returning to the world with co-stars Gemma Chan (Astrid Leong) and Awkwafina (Peik Lin Goh). Showrunner Adele Lim, who co-wrote the movie script, has been in touch with the three actors. Here's what Golding said:

"Everybody’s excited. I was with Nora, Awkwafina, who is a fellow New Yorker, the other night, and we were discussing it. We had Adele Lim come over and visit me and...

Tom Cruise Reveals the 'Massive Breakfast' He'd Eat to Have Energy for Mission: Impossible 8 Filming
Image
Tom Cruise is going all-out in what could be his final Mission: Impossible film; the trailers offered a glimpse of his latest stunt scene. Other actors might throw up while wing-walking on a plane, but for Cruise, it's just another day of filming.

Tom Cruise one-ups himself with every Mission: Impossible sequel, but he reached new heights (literally) in The Final Reckoning. The trailer teased the film's key stunt: Cruise dead-hanging from the wing of a biplane. Others might shirk at the prospect of doing that stunt for real, but the actor confirmed it was a childhood dream fulfilled. "I remember seeing old footage of wing-walking," he told People. "Those aircraft were only traveling at, I don't know, 40, 50 miles an hour. This aircraft is up to over 120 miles an hour. Going out there, I was realizing that it takes your breath away."

Cruise has a knack for death-defying stunt scenes.

Jeff Goldblum Is Looking Forward to His Next ‘Wicked’ Song

Hardcore Wicked fans have a lot of unshakable opinions, including the widespread belief that the Wizard’s big moment in the first act, the talky “A Sentimental Man,” is the Broadway show’s single worst song. But when Jeff Goldblum stepped in as the Wizard for director Jon M. Chu’s blockbuster film version, he managed to salvage the song in fans’ eyes, playing up the character’s toxic blend of smarm and charisma. “I’ve had a lot of positive anecdotal response like that,” Goldblum says in the new...

Wilson Cruz, Robinne Fanfair, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Blu del Barrio, Sonequa Martin-Green, David Ajala, and Mary Wiseman in Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Spotlight - Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s Holly Hunter will shine in the lead role
Wilson Cruz, Robinne Fanfair, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Blu del Barrio, Sonequa Martin-Green, David Ajala, and Mary Wiseman in Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Set in the 32nd century as a spin-off from Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will be a series departure from the usual Star Trek canon that follows the adventures of a Federation starship and its captain and crew rather than the faculty and young cadets of Earth’s Starfleet Academy. With Helen Hunt cast as the Academy's captain and chancellor, it will be the third time a Star Trek series is led by a female captain, following Kate Mulgrew's Captain Kathyrn Janeway of Star Trek: Voyager and Sonequa Martin-Green’s Captain Michael Burnham of Star Trek: Discovery.

Holly Hunter is the only Academy Award winner (The Piano) in an acting category to be cast as the lead in a prime-time Star Trek series. Of course, there have been several Oscar winners to be cast in supportive Star Trek series roles, who have won the golden statue, such...
