As My So-Called Life nears its 30th anniversary, Executive Producer Ed Zwick took a walk down memory lane Saturday to remind folks about working on the before-its-time drama that starred Claire Danes.
In a long X thread, Zwick shared an “origin story” about how he was first drawn to the work of Winnie Holzman before he would end up co-EPing her script with longtime producing partner Marshall Herskovitz. Zwick chronicles his work on My So-Called Life, as well as thirtysomething, The Last Samurai and Glory in his upcoming book “Hits, Flops and Other Illusions,” out in February.
“Kristy McNichol played ‘Buddy,’ an adolescent girl on ABC-tv’s Family,” Zwick began. “I’d write surly teenage dialogue and get network notes on my scripts with the initials N.O.B. meaning “not our Buddy.” I vowed someday I’d get to portray real adolescence.”

Have you ever wondered why in the 2023 version of "The Haunted Mansion," Owen Wilson is shown eating a big bag of Burger King and telling Lakeith Stanfield that the fast food chain's fried snacks are literal messages from heaven? Or why while Rambo is being told about his off-the-books, super-secret, clandestine mission to rescue POWs from Vietnam in "Rambo: First Blood Part II," the scene gets interrupted by his superior officer purchasing a Coca-Cola from the Coca-Cola vending machine that he inexplicably has in his office?
The answer is a little thing called product placement, in which various companies selling various products frequently exchange money with motion picture and/or television studios to display their products prominently on-screen. That's probably why in "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer," when Reed Richards presents the famous flying FantastiCar from the comic books that he built all by himself in his private lab,...

Steven Spielberg’s Jaws is a tough act to follow. Not only has it come to define the entire shark horror subgenre, but this aquatic adventure movie also revolutionized the concept of the summer blockbuster as we know it today. It’s difficult to understate the film’s legacy. From archetypal characterization, iconic kills, ubiquitous catch phrases, and an incredible score, Jaws is a nearly flawless film that continues to terrify new audiences to this day. The same cannot be said for its sequels, however.
The underrated Jaws 2 feels a bit more like a slasher with its cadre of teens stranded in deadly water. The fourth installment, Jaws: The Revenge, is known for its implausible plot and Michael Caine’s hilarious yet dismissive comments. While the aforementioned sequels have their merits–and fair share of ardent supporters–when it comes time to defend Jaws 3D, few rise to the occasion.

A new episode of our The Black Sheep video series has arrived online, and in this one we’re looking back at a rather unpopular sequel: 1983’s Jaws 3-D (watch it Here)! Many people’s appreciation for the Jaws franchise ends with Jaws 2, but in the video embedded above we’re letting you know why we think Jaws 3-D deserves a bit more love. Check it out!
Directed by Joe Alves from a screenplay by Richard Matheson and Carl Gottlieb (with Guerdon Trueblood receiving story credit), Jaws 3-D has the following synopsis:
After a young great white shark finds its way into a sea-themed park managed by Calvin Bouchard, workers try to capture it. But the facility’s attempt to keep the shark in captivity has dire consequences: A much larger mother shark appears in search of its offspring. Among those who must battle the angry aquatic killing machine are marine biologist Kathryn Morgan,...

When "Gilmore Girls" first made its debut on the now-defunct WB network back in 2000, it would have been easy at first glance to lump the show together with The WB's roster of female-skewed dramas at the time, including the likes of "Dawson's Creek" and "Felicity." Yet those who tuned in discovered something far deeper and richer, a series that deftly blended comedy and drama in telling the story of single mom Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) raising her studious teenage daughter Rory (Alexis Bledel) in Connecticut's quirkiest town. Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, her gift for hilariously authentic dialogue was ever-present in characters who spoke fast, quipped hard, and always had the perfect retort in conversations that played out like verbal tennis matches.
While the Lorelai-Rory relationship remained the show's heart, soul, and spine, as the show evolved "Gilmore Girls" also introduced an entertainingly eccentric cast of supporting characters who lived in Stars Hollow.

The Jaws movie series is one of the greatest suspense thrillers. Produced and distributed by Universal Pictures, the series had a troubled production, owing to its over budget and behind schedule.
However, the series grabbed three Academy Awards, including best film editing, original dramatic score, and sound.
Viewers of Jaws movie can be stunned at the quality and realism of the film made in 1975. Directed by Steven Spielberg, cast of Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, and Richard Dreyfuss, the movie captures pure terror in scenes.
Many viewers believe that the original Jaws movie produced in 1975 is a classic film among all the Jaws series. “Jaws” was so successful that it led to three sequels.
The four films have earned nearly 800 million worldwide at the box office. Despite the success of these films, critics and audiences were largely dissatisfied with the sequels.

Wilford Brimley, best known for his roles in “The Natural,” the 1982 remake of “The Thing,” “The Firm” and “Cocoon,” died on Saturday. He was 85.
His agent, Lynda Bensky, told The New York Times that he had been sick with a kidney problem for two months.
Brimley was also famous for the series of commercials for Quaker Oats in which he appeared.
Pauline Kael ably summed up his appeal in a few words. Reviewing “Cocoon” for the New Yorker in 1985, she said, “Wilford Brimley, with his walrus mustache and friendly belly, brings an ornery impudence to his role.”
Brimley, who seemed to enter old age several decades ago, appeared perfectly at home in the Ron Howard-directed movie about senior citizens unintentionally rejuvenated by an alien life force in the pool where they do water aerobics even though he was only 51 at the time. Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the best one-and-done show, a.k.a. a One-Season Wonder? (This refers to shows that only got one season and tragically did not get renewed, as opposed to limited series that never intended to continue.)
Allison Keene (@KeeneTV), Collider
There are so many! But for me the best will always be “Freaks and Geeks.” It’s a show that I watched at an age before I really understood the whole TV renewal/cancellation process, but even then I knew it was unjustly short. The show was such a great blend of smarts, snark, and genuine emotions, in a way that could actually be painful to watch.

Hayes Morrison is no one's role model or puppet. Welcome Hayes, you're a breath of fall TV air.
We were all aware of the premise going into Conviction Season 1 Episode 1, but the surprise is the excellent cast and how in-depth the show actually is.
Hayes is a brilliant, glamorous and lost woman in the spotlight. She's the kind of character you root for, but who will undoubtedly break your heart. The recklessness she craves in her personal life has met her match. Karma is a bitch.

Today was a big day for Claire Danes! The "Homeland" actress received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and she celebrated the honor with her "My So-Called Life" family. Bess Armstrong, who played Danes' mother on the show, posed for pictures at the event with the guest of honor, the show's creator, Winnie Holzman, and "Homeland" producer Alex Gansa. Watch the ceremony below: Claire, who looked stunning in a ruffled red tea-length dress, stood next to her TV mom as she spoke at the ceremony. "There's a small group of us here today that had the privilege and pleasure of knowing Claire at the very beginning of her career when we all worked together on 'My So-Called Life,'" Armstrong told the crowd. Had Freaks And Geeks, Caprica and more not been cancelled, here’s what their showrunners had planned for their futures. Spoilers…
Warning: major spoilers for all shows listed below.
Closure. It’s an important psychological concept. Without closure, it’s difficult to grieve, move on, make peace and nurture your inner Ewok or whatever it is the self-help books tell us. When a TV show is cancelled before its story has been fully told, the result is an unscratchable itch.
That itch can have positive side effects. The creativity for instance, of fanfic and fan art, and the tenacity and camaraderie of doggedly pursued fan campaigns. The less positive side though is, well, not so pretty. Sleepless nights, anxiety at work, a tendency to grasp total strangers by the shoulders with both hands, hot stress-tears streaming down your cheeks, and cry “So did Lois and Clark raise that baby or what?...

In 1994, a show about a teenage girl came into our lives and changed them forever. While it was just as swiftly taken from us, My So-Called Life left an impact on television and on its viewers. As we near the show’s 21st birthday (Rayanne, you still should not be drinking) we thought we’d check in and see how the Chase family and friends have fared over the years. Spoiler: one of them is now a royal!
Claire Danes (Angela Chase)
We all know how Angela Chase herself turned out. Danes has enjoyed a successful career, including Emmy wins for Temple Grandin and Homeland. And our favorite angsty teen is now a mom! She and husband Hugh Dancy welcomed a son in 2012.
Bess Armstrong (Patty Chase)

Why TLC quickly ditched “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” Quick and decisive action was the only choice TLC had to make, says Josef Adalian, because it’s better to be safe than sorry. Plus, if the facts of the situation change, TLC could easily un-cancel the show. Still, “Honey Boo Boo’s” ratings have declined recently, and its loss won’t really hurt TLC. Twenty years after it first aired in the Us, we celebrate My So-Called Life’s brilliantly written, strongly cast pilot…
From its opening shot, My So-Called Life announces itself as distinct from its glossy Us teen TV peers. Filmed on location using natural lighting and a hand-held camera, the pre-credits sequence is a world away from candy-coloured sets and Malibu beaches. We see two teenage girls messing around on a street, hanging off one another and periodically breaking into fits of laughter. The girls speak directly to camera, addressing an unseen passer-by with a string of goofy tall stories.
One of the actresses - Claire Danes - breaks the chief rule of playing a teenager on American TV by actually being one. The other - A.J Langer - isn’t long out of her teens. With a face free of make-up and as-yet undyed mousy blonde hair, Danes is and looks fifteen,...

The best movie culture writing from around the internet-o-sphere. There will be a quiz later. Just leave a tab open for us, will ya? “Guardians of the Galaxy was so much fun. So why did it feel so empty?” — Todd VanDerWerff at Vox rebounds from the “post-plot” conversation to explore where emotional resonance doesn’t match the MacGuffin-focused goal. He makes some interesting points about franchise needs overshadowing, but I’m not sure why the story of a hand-rejecting loner learning to work with — and then care for — others as they complete an important mission isn’t an example of pathos marching alongside high concept. “20 Years After My So-Called Life, Bess Armstrong Reveals What Creators Planned for Season Two” — Katey Rich at Vanity Fair gets and explores the scoop on a show that focused equally on parents while finding a rabid audience in young teens. “My So-Called Life at 20” — Speaking of which, Sylvia...

A "My So-Called Life" reunion is finally happening ... but there's a catch.
Wilson Cruz (Rickie Vasquez), Devon Odessa (Sharon Cherski), Bess Armstrong (Patty Chase), Devon Gummersall (Brian Krakow) and creator Winnie Holzman will gather together at the second annual Atx Television Festival in Austin, Texas this June.

This week, Ology.com’s New TV Preview Week is celebrating our favorite (and least favorite) spring premieres by doing what we do best: watching them in advance and letting you know if they’re worth your time. Start here: spoiling is good for you.
House of Lies isn't a mindblowing show, nor did you ever get the feeling it was trying to be one. It simply exists in Showtime's thrilling roster of perverted dramas and whacked out comedies as the cool show, the one where every witty line's delivered with effortless ease, where every lead is smirking at you from a carefully planned-and-Photoshopped poster as if to say, "You have no idea about the wacky things we get into!"
But of course, when you're trying to be cool, you're apt to make the mistakes that House of Lies did, and there was a general sense of working way too...

Exclusive: Tony Sirico has been tapped for a recurring role on the Fox animated series Family Guy. He will voice Vinnie the Dog, a pooch with attitude and possible criminal ties that the Griffins buy from a pet shop. I hear Sirico also sings the theme song for next season with Family Guy creator/lead actor Seth MacFarlane and the rest of the series’ voice cast. Additionally, Sirico is set to voice Tony “Peanuts” Sirico in the Adult Swim animated pilot Colonel Wallace, about an eccentric Southern fried-chicken magnate. Sirico, repped by Bob McGowan, recently wrapped the feature Zarra’s Law and Nickelodeon movie Nicky Deuce. My So-Called Life alumna Bess Armstrong has landed a recurring role on the second season of Showtime’s dark comedy series House Of Lies, about a group of ruthless management consultants. In a 6- to 7-episode arc, Armstrong will play Julianne Hotschragar, a Meg Whitman-type character.
