Bruce Willis in Die Hard (1988)
Quentin Tarantino Says This Classic Prime Video Thriller is “Clever” and “expertly made”
Bruce Willis in Die Hard (1988)
Die Hard is an iconic feature that forever changed the action movie landscape. Countless films have imitated it, but none have done it better. You don’t have to take my word for it, though. Quentin Tarantino and his Video Archives Podcast cohost Roger Avary spent a few moments discussing the epic picture on last week’s episode. After listening, it’s clear to me that the Reservoir Dogs filmmaker holds the feature in high regard.

“If you live in a world where Die Hard already existed, it means nothing to you or you already know it’s a terrific movie,” explained Tarantino. “What was so great about Die Hard is you didn’t know that walking in. It’s just so clever, and it’s so expertly made.”

I concur with Tarantino. Die Hard made me fall in love with action cinema. I saw it for the first time several decades ago.

Drop's Incredible Screenplay Learned Every Lesson Die Hard Taught Us Decades Ago
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

In their invaluable book "Writing Movies for Fun and Profit," authors Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant (former members of "The State" and writers of hit films like "Night at the Museum" and "Herbie: Fully Loaded") had a few pieces of immutable advice for aspiring screenwriters hoping to make a living in Hollywood. Importantly, they advised that writers should never hang all your dreams on a single screenplay, and they should be able to toss aside a script if it gets turned down. They also advised that writers say, "Yes, I can do that," to every single studio note, no matter how ridiculous. They wanted to ensure that an ambitious should churn out as much work as possible, and worry more about "entertainment" than "art."

Perhaps most crucially, an aspiring screenwriter should watch "Die Hard" over and over and over again.

Bruce Willis Gave 'Die Hard' Costar Samuel L Jackson the Best Advice of His Career
Image
It's safe to say that Hollywood star Samuel L. Jackson has more than a handful of memorable roles. From playing a very unlucky member of Hammond's crew in Jurassic Park to giving life to the Bible verse-spewing villain Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction. His career speaks for itself, but that doesn't mean he hasn't had a fair share of less successful roles. Nevertheless, the MCU star revealed that a long time ago, he got a key piece of advice from his colleagueBruce Willis that prepared him for whenever his movies were bad, and he lacked money to pay the bills.

Willis turned 70 a few days ago, and his friends and colleagues celebrated his birthday. Jackson, his co-star in movies like Unbreakable, and Bonnie Bedelia, his romantic counterpart in the first two Die Hard movies, took to Vanity Fair to honor the action star. Jackson and Willis appeared together in four...

Bruce Willis Reveals Whether 'Die Hard' Is a Christmas Movie (He's Wrong)
Image
It's the question that has divided moviegoers for 36 years: Is Die Hard a Christmas film? Fans of the acclaimed Bruce Willis action flick return to Nakatomi Plaza every year, as John McClane (Willis) fights his way through Hans Gruber's (Alan Rickman) terrorist group to save his wife on Christmas Day. To some, the film's Christmas setting is enough for Die Hard to qualify. But, naysayers and all-round humbugs cry that the guns, explosions, and Bruce Willis looking badass in a vest aren't what Christmas is actually about — they've never been to Christmas with my family. Thankfully, the debate has been settled once and for all, as Bruce Willis himself has finally weighed in on the matter.

During the Roast of Bruce Willis (via @RealEmirHan on X) back in 2018, Bruce Willis closed the roast with a public service announcement about Die Hard. "Now please, listen very carefully," Willis began. The other guests,...

Diane Delano, ‘Northern Exposure’ and ‘Popular’ Actress, Dies at 67

Delano died Friday of cancer in her home in Sherman Oaks, her friend Stepfanie Kramer announced.

“She was big and bold and brought her sharp wit and perfect comic timing to every role,” Kramer said. “Her earthy and raucous presence enabled her to always own the room. She was one of a kind.”

As Rhonda Vasek, Delano had a romantic liaison with Douglas Brackman Jr. (Alan Rachins) in 1987 on the second season of NBC’s L.A. Law, and she guest-starred on such other shows as Falcon Crest, Cop Rock, Step by Step, Third Rock From the Sun, ER, Monk, Six Feet Under, Cold Case, The Bridge, 2 Broke Girls and PEN15.

Bruce Willis made some unforgettable movie magic and completely changed the face of the action genre when he headlined the beloved 1988 blockbuster hit Die Hard, which famously followed NYPD detective extraordinaire John Mclane as he finds himself facing off against a nefarious group of terrorists on Christmas Eve. Great War Stories From Charles Roven, Oscar-Winning ‘Oppenheimer’ Producer & American Cinematheque Honoree – The Deadline Q&a
Image
Exclusive: On Friday night, producer Charles Roven receives the 2024 Power of Cinema Award from the American Cinematheque for 40 years worth of films that have moved the cultural needle. That includes Oppenheimer, for which Roven accepted the Best Picture Oscar along with Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas. His list is long with films that have grossed billions of dollars and encompass Hollywood’s biggest stars and filmmakers spread across titles like 12 Monkeys, American Hustle, Three Kings, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Man of Steel and other DC blockbusters.

My very first exchanges with Roven years ago were bitter; I’d learned that his wife, Dawn Steel, was dying from brain cancer. I had a fine relationship with her, but she was the first woman to run a major studio and I felt I was doing my job by divulging the sad news to Daily Variety readers. Roven was steadfast that their struggle remain private.

Jessica Chastain and ‘Oppenheimer’ Producer Charles Roven Celebrated at 2024 American Cinematheque Awards
Image
As befitting its name, the American Cinematheque keeps the art form of film running in theaters. The non-profit, founded in 1984, showcases 1,500 films a year, programming year-round at three Los Angeles theaters, and its annual awards show helps raise money to keep those films in front of an audience. This year’s honorees (who will be feted at the Beverly Hilton on Dec. 6) have had extraordinary careers and share a passion for cinema.

Jessica Chastain, the 38th recipient of the American Cinematheque Award, follows in the footsteps of Eddie Murphy, who was its first honoree, and other Hollywood royalty like Steven Spielberg, Martin Scor-sese, Denzel Washington and Al Pacino.

The star of films like “Zero Dark Thirty,” “Interstellar” and “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” Chastain is no stranger to accolades, having earned an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a Drama Desk and three SAG Awards. She is also an Emmy and two-time Tony Award nominee.

A Bruce Willis Action Classic Is Taking Over Prime Video's Top Charts

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, apparently. Not just because Thanksgiving is behind us and we're well into December, with wall-to-wall Christmas stuff lining every aisle at big-box chain stores and sale after sale encouraging people to spend big this holiday season. No, it's because people are watching "Die Hard" en masse, which is truly the best way to get into the spirit of the season, in my humble opinion. I'm apparently not alone in that.

"Die Hard" is currently sitting at number six on Amazon Prime Video's top-streamed movie charts, per FlixPatrol. It's been occupying that spot for the past couple of days, as of this writing. So, why are people streaming the 1988 Bruce Willis action classic now? Because, for a great many people, this is a Christmas movie. Case in point, Prime Video's top 10 chart also...

Bruce Willis' Favorite Scene From Die Hard Is Unexpected
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Die Hard."

Having to choose a favorite scene from "Die Hard" is like sticking to one dish in an all-you-can-eat buffet. The bounties that 1988's "Die Hard" — which is now considered one of the greatest action films of all time — offers are plentiful, but the thing it does best is establish a male protagonist who isn't invincible or immune to emotions; instead, they're as flawed and vulnerable as the average person. At the same time, however, John McClane (Bruce Willis) is anything but average, given his ability to circumvent every attempt to kill him due to sheer luck and emerge as a reluctant hero who must give into vigilantism against all odds.

The opening of "Die Hard" can be considered a solid scene unto itself. As McClane is taken to Nakatomi Plaza by his driver Argyle (De'voreaux White), their exchange allows us to learn a...

Does Apple TV's Presumed Innocent Connect to the Original Harrison Ford Movie?
Image
The following contains spoilers for Apple TV's Presumed Innocent, including revealing who committed the murder at the heart of the series.

In 1987, two years before John Grisham published his first novel, author Scott Turow became the reigning master of the legal thriller, thanks to the gigantic success of his book Presumed Innocent. Three years later, the bestseller spawned a feature film adaptation starring Harrison Ford, directed by one of Hollywood's most acclaimed filmmakers, Alan J. Pakula. More than a modest success, Presumed Innocent earned over $200 million at the worldwide box office and became Warner Bros.'s highest-grossing film of the year. Then, the IP sat dormant for over 30 years.

Like Scott Turow was once the master of the legal thriller on the page, television producer David E. Kelley has earned his reputation as the reigning king of legal dramas and thrillers on TV after an impressive body of nearly four decades of work.

Quentin Tarantino Defends Bruce Willis' Late-Career Action Movies
Image
Bruce Willis might be known for such action hits as Die Hard, Armageddon, The Fifth Element, and The Expendables, but sadly, as his health declined, he appeared in a number of low-budget movies that some say tarnished his legacy. Not Quentin Tarantino, however, who recently defended Willis decision to nab a few quick paychecks shortly before word broke that hed been diagnosed with aphasia, going so far as to say he was "really impressed" by the films.

Speaking on his Video Archives Podcast, Tarantrino admitted to watching at least six of the direct-to-video flicks, including Vice (2015), Trauma Center (2019), and Deadlock (2021), calling them "very easy to watch" and "entertaining." The Pulp Fiction director also said he doesnt see what critics see, and praised Willis performances.

Die Hard 6 Gets an Official Update From 20th Century Boss

The boss of 20th Century Studios has revealed what is going on with the iconic action movie franchise, Die Hard. Speaking with THR about all manner of upcoming projects, Asbell offered a brief, but no less teasing, update on Die Hard 6. Sadly, Die Hard lead Bruce Willis is now out of action after being diagnosed with aphasia and later with frontotemporal dementia. Salem’s Lot (1979) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
Salem’s Lot has a legendary status not unlike the vampire creatures that are the chief antagonists therein. While we are finally getting the newest movie adaptation this month after what seemed like an eternity in development and then an unceremonious shelving, the original continues to have a cult classic aura around it. There was a second TV miniseries that came out on TNT in 2004 but the quality of that one varies depending on who you talk to. Even with all the cache that the original miniseries brings to the table, it had been years since I had watched it. It deserved a revisit and make no mistake, this addition to the King cinematic universe needed a remake more than nearly anything else he has put out.

Originally Salem’s Lot was going to be a theatrical experience but Warner Brothers, who had purchased the rights, had a hard time settling on the story and the personnel.

Children of the Vampire: Horror’s Many Returns to ‘Salem’s Lot’ Over the Years
Image
Warning: The following contains minor spoilers for various adaptations of Salem’s Lot.

In addition to character-driven novels and disturbing horror, Stephen King is known for writing folksy stories set in the rural Northeast. His bestselling It takes place in Derry, a close approximation to Bangor, Maine, and he’s been returning to Castle Rock, a town first introduced in his 1979 novel The Dead Zone, through forty years of bestselling horror.

But before both of these locations became literary institutions, there was Jerusalem’s Lot, a quaint Maine village with many dark secrets. For every kind and generous resident, there’s another sleeping with the phone repairman, peddling gossip over the register, or making lucrative real estate deals under the table. In his second novel, Salem’s Lot, King delights in uncovering the scandalous sins of this tiny burg before a powerful vampire enters the scene. Kurt Barlow and his familiar Richard Straker...

10 Scariest Stephen King Movie & TV Adaptations, Ranked
Image
Stephen King has earned his moniker as the master of horror over five decades, penning some of the most frightening horror stories anyone anywhere has ever read. When you're capable of churning out some of the most terrifying story premises on the planet, it's only a matter of time until Hollywood comes calling, and at this point in his illustrious career, so many of his ideas have hit the big and small screen that Stephen King is more or less a genre onto himself.

Stephen King addressed this major Stranger Things issue two years ago, and it's still yet to be addressed.

Of course, there's a catch-22 when it comes to this level of success like that. Although dozens of adaptations of Stephen King's stories have been produced over the years, not all of them in fact,...

Larry Cohen's Panned Salem's Lot Sequel Finds a New Streaming Home on Max
Image
As one of the worst horror movie sequels ever made, youre forgiven if youve managed to wipe the memory of A Return to Salems Lot from your brain. Directed by Larry Cohen, the film is an unremarkable follow-up to Tobe Hoopers 1979 TV miniseries, and features an anthropologist and his son making their way to Salems Lot only to discover that its been taken over by vampires. This jumbled continuation received a limited theatrical release in 1987 before hitting VHS a year later, and now its yours to rediscover this Halloween when it makes its way to its new streaming home.

Per Max, A Return to Salems Lot will begin streaming on October 1, just two days before the premiere of Gary Daubermans long-awaited remake of the original. Starring Michael Moriarty, Ricky Addison, Samuel Fuller, and Tara Reid in her feature film debut, the sequel was a critical failure on every level, not even reaching camp status.

How Frank Sinatra Almost Starred in Die Hard Instead of Bruce Willis
Image
Yippe ki-kay! From marvelous quotes to a hero who literally runs circles around terrorists without any shoes, Die Hard is one top-floor outing youll remember for a long time. In an era populated by muscle-bound, frowning, bullet-dodging protagonists, the film felt refreshing thanks to its reliance on a witty, motor-mouthed central character. Every Way That Stephen King Fans Can Visit 'Salem's Lot
Image
The 2024 feature film adaptation of Stephen King's second novel 'Salem's Lot will hit Max on October 3, but until then there are plenty of ways for fans to explore the vampire-infested village. It was the setting for the novel and two short stories; two TV miniseries; an oddball '80s movie sequel; and even a radio play co-starring Hellraiser's biggest icon. The author has even hinted that the legacy of the town extends through more books than most people know.

The 1975 novel was adapted for television in 1979 and 2004, and the short story was adapted in 2021. In 1987, cult movie king Larry Cohen directed legendary filmmaker Sam Fuller in a black comedy sequel, and in 1994 the BBC staged a seven-part radio play starring Doug Bradley Hellraiser's original Pinhead as the terrifying Barlow. And King has responded to questions about a 'Salem's Lot sequel with hints about his Dark Tower novels.

The Vampires Are Hungry in the New Trailer For ‘Salem’s Lot’
Image
The 1975 Stephen King horror classic Salem’s Lot is coming back to life, with a new feature-length adaptation heading to Max on October 3.

A new trailer, set against the backdrop of Gordon Light’s 1974 song “Sundown,” gives a peak of what happens when killer vampires descend on the sleepy Maine town of Jerusalem’s Lot.

This new adaptation of King’s novel – starring Lewis Pullman, Makenzie Leigh, Bill Camp, Pilou Asbæk, Alfre Woodard, and William Sadler – was written and directed Gary Dauberman, the co-writer on the 2017 adaptation of It and the 2018 sequel It Chapter Two.

Salem’s Lot Trailer: There’s Something Wrong with Jerusalem’s Lot
Image
Yesterday, horrormeister Stephen King tweeted: “Salem’S Lot trailer is coming. It’s a good one.” And now that the trailer has arrived, it’s confirmed King was telling the truth. There’s a lot packed into the two-minute trailer, and it effectively captures the creepy, suspenseful, and terrifying vibe.

The film stars Lewis Pullman as Ben Mears, Alfre Woodard as Dr. Cody, Makenzie Leigh as Susan Norton, and Bill Camp as Matthew Burke. Spencer Treat Clark plays Mike Ryerson, Pilou Asbæk is Straker, and John Benjamin Hickey is Father Callahan.

“Author Ben Mears returns to his childhood home of Jerusalem’s Lot in search of inspiration for his next book only to discover his hometown is being preyed upon by a bloodthirsty vampire,” reads Max’s synopsis. Gary Dauberman (Annabelle Comes Home) adapted Stephen King’s bestselling 1975 novel and directs. Dauberman’s also an executive producer along with Mark Wolper,...

Die Hard Movies Are Streaming on Hulu in October
Image
Every single movie in the beloved Die Hard franchise has found a new streaming home on Hulu. First released in 1988, Die Hard is one of the most influential action movies of the 80s (and one of the best Christmas movies of all-time - discuss!). Starring Bruce Willis as Officer John McClane, Die Hard sees Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) and his crew raid the Nagasaki Tower, taking everyone, except a sneaky McClane, hostage. When the police cannot enter the building under threat of losing hostages, McClane is forced to single-handedly take them out, all while trying to revive his dead relationship with his ex-wife Holly Gennero (Bonnie Bedelia).

Die Hard helped to cement Bruce Willis as a bona-fide action star, leading him to major roles in Pulp Fiction, The Fifth Element, Twelve Monkeys, and, most importantly, the rest of the Die Hard series. Despite some duds, Die Hard is among the greatest action franchises of all-time.

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From The 1979 Salem's Lot Miniseries
Image
Before "Salem's Lot" returned to the zeitgeist with a highly-anticipated reboot movie, the Stephen King classic was a miniseries that shook the world. Directed by "Texas Chain Saw Massacre" mastermind Tobe Hooper, the two-part 1979 series was event TV at its spookiest.

The original "Salem's Lot" limited series has never been among the best King adaptations out there, but it holds a unique place in pop culture history thanks to its status as one of the earliest on-screen takes on a King book — plus some truly frightening moments. Several members of the show's sprawling ensemble cast, including David Soul, James Mason, Lance Kerwin, and vamp actor Reggie Nalder, have passed away in the decades since "Salem's Lot" first beamed its way into our collective consciousness. Of the actors who are still with us, several have gone on to award-winning careers in film and television, while others retired or found fulfillment in other careers.

This 1990s Stephen King Adaptation Remains One of the Most Underrated
Image
Quick Links Needful Things Plot and Cast Needful Things Performed Badly at The Box Office Needful Things Found a Second Life with a Cult Following

When it comes to horror, you would be hard-pressed to think of a name more influential than Stephen King, particularly in movie adaptations. With over 350 movies drawing influence from his original works, many projects are loved, and almost equal numbers are despised; for every Shining and Misery, you get a Dreamcatcher and The Lawnmower Man. Still, out of so many films, there are bound to be a few that fall through the cracks, deserving of greater attention but largely forgotten with time.

1993's Needful Things falls into the latter category. The movie was a box office flop and critically panned on release, pushing it to be a side note in the ever-growing list of Stephen King adaptations. However, with time, the movie has found a cult following,...

‘Presumed Innocent’ Finale Updates the Film’s Ending While Dumbing It Down — Spoilers
Image
Editor’s note: This post discusses the ending of Apple TV+’s “Presumed Innocent.”

No ending that includes Elizabeth Marvel and Bill Camp gardening together in blissful harmony — with Mr. Marvel wearing a Chicago Bears shirt — can be all bad. And, to be fair, the “Presumed Innocent” finale accomplished exactly what the series has been striving for throughout its lengthy, often hysterical (in every meaning of the word) eight-episode run: It ended with a twist as gasp-inducing in the moment as it was groan-worthy a few minutes later.

After all, the title and history behind “Presumed Innocent” point viewers toward an ending where the guilty party is hiding in plain sight. Someone who’s conveniently, almost instinctively written off not just because they couldn’t commit murder, but also because they wouldn’t commit murder. That rules out Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal), a loud and violent fella who had an affair with the victim,...

‘Presumed Innocent’ Got a Feminist Update — But Don’t Worry, It Still Hates Women

We are a country obsessed with reboots. Refashioning tired narratives into something that ideally becomes new in its retelling. Or, perhaps, just makes studio executives more money. We after all must endure an endless return of Marvel and DC characters, adaptations of adaptations, until everything feels like a shitty copy of a copy, rasterized, and remade until the sign and signifier barely have any resemblance.

But which stories do we reboot and why? Which narratives deserve a second look? And of all of them, and in this economy, why was it Presumed Innocent,...

Apple renews Presumed Innocent for Season 2 after the Jake Gyllenhaal-led thriller climbs the charts
Image
Apple TV+ is so thrilled with the performance of its new legal drama Presumed Innocent that it is renewing the Jake Gyllenhaal-led thriller for another season. Abrams, and Gyllenhaal, return as executive producers for Presumed Innocent Season 2, with author Scott Turow co-executive producing. Wait. Isn’t Presumed Innocent a one-and-done story? Not when money is waiting in the wings, my friends!

‘Presumed Innocent’ is latest in long line of Scott Turow mysteries on TV
Image
Attorney-turned-selling novelist Scott Turow made the cover of Time magazine the summer of 1990 describing him as the “Bard of the Litigious Age.” And 34 years later, the 75-year-old still is. Over the past four decades, Turow has written 13 works of fiction which have been translated into 40 languages and have sold more than 30 million copies. Several have been transformed into miniseries and TV movies.

In fact, Hollywood filmmakers were salivating in 1987 for the rights to Turow’s first novel, “Presumed Innocent,” a clever, sexy murder mystery with twists and turns that would baffle even Columbo, about a prosecutor accused of murdering the attractive colleague with whom he had been romantically involved “It began a sort of Hollywood frenzy,” Turow told me in a 1992 L.A. Times interview. “It was one weekend’s madness.” And for good reason, the novel spent 44 weeks on the New York Times best-seller list and another five months on the paperback charts.
