Saturday Night Live has served as a launching pad to TV superstardom (Tina Fey and Bill Hader), dominance at the box office and even #1 music albums (Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi). But not every SNL star goes on to greater showbiz heights.
Here are five comedians who killed on the show only to find they just weren’t as good at anything else. In fairness, as insults go, “You were better at Saturday Night Live than anything else,” isn’t the worst that one could hear.

It’s Homecoming Year at Saturday Night Live — as the show celebrates its 50th season, several former cast members have returned to get a piece of Lorne Michaels’ anniversary cake. Not all comedy cameos are created equal, however. Here are all of the SNL alumni who’ve returned this year, ranked by their impact on the show…
7 Punkie Johnson
I’ll admit it — until I dug into this list, I didn’t realize Punkie Johnson, who left the show over the summer after getting passed over to play Kamala, had appeared during Season 50. But there she is during the good-byes of the Charli Xcx show, relegated to the second row behind fellow ex-cast members Kyle Mooney and Andy Samberg. The fact that most didn’t know Johnson was there earns her last place on this list.

“Saturday Night Live” is finding its rhythm this season now that the election is out of the way, with stellar hosts Charli Xcx and now Paul Mescal bringing a youthful, silly energy to “SNL 50.” But that doesn’t mean Lorne Michaels and the cast don’t have a few political punches left to throw.
For the evening’s cold open, Dana Carvey returned once again, not to impersonate Joe Biden or Elon Musk, but to bring back one of his most beloved characters, the Church Lady. It was a welcome return that featured many headline-grabbing figures such as Matt Gaetz, played by Sarah Sherman, and Hunter Biden, played by fellow past cast member David Spade. While the show has always tried to be fair in its equal skewering of the right and the left, it definitely seems like its become more bold with its hits on both parties in its last few episodes.

Enid Strict, better known as The Church Lady, practically had to return to Saturday Night Live in the December 7 episode. After all, 2024 was, in her appraisal, “the most satanic year in history.” The cold open marked the first time Dana Carvey has reprised the role of Enid since 2016, though the SNL alum has been a regular presence in Season 50, serving as the NBC show’s President Joe Biden. “Instead of Mother Mary, little girls are looking up to the Hawk Tuah Girl,” Enid began. “Everywhere you look, you’ve got 11-year-olds dressing up like that vixen Sabrina Carpenter. Do you know who was the best carpenter? Jesus. [Singing to the tune of ‘Espresso’] He’s working late ’cause he’s a savior.” Enid then took aim at multiple political figures who were brought on as guests. As she kicked off her “Church Chat” talk show on Saturday, Enid welcomed former U.S. Representative Matt Gaetz, played by Sarah Sherman,...

With all the hype surrounding its 50th anniversary season, someone was due to stand out on Saturday Night Live this year. Marcello Hernandez seemed primed to take the spotlight. Maybe Chloe Fineman would finally be crowned queen. Sarah Sherman? Ego Nwodim? One of the new featured players? But an unexpected comedian has become the season’s breakout star: Dana Carvey.
Yeah, that Dana Carvey.
It was an unexpected giggle in the season premiere when Carvey dropped in unexpectedly as the show’s ninth (ninth!) Joe Biden impersonator. Predictably, Carvey nailed the guy in ways that more precise impressionists like James Austin Johnson couldn’t. “Guess what? And by the way…” became Biden shorthand in the way that Carvey’s “Nah ga da it!” defined George Bush. Maybe Carvey wasn’t throwing 100 mph anymore but he still had enough of a fastball to deliver quality innings during election season.

You know what Gladiator II was missing? A lot of singing and dancing, apparently.
After the runaway box office success of Moana 2 and Wicked, this week’s Saturday Night Live reimagined Gladiator II as a musical, with host Paul Mescal — who stars in the big-screen epic — reprising his role as warrior Lucius… only with a lot more singing this time. To kick off the fake trailer, Kenan Thompson led the ensemble in a stirring opening number called “There’s No Place Like Rome,” where (oof) “every senator has a boy to molest.”

Dana Carvey reprised his Saturday Night Live character Church Lady for the first time since SNL‘s post-2016 election show, this time questioning presidential son Hunter Biden (David Spade), as well as former Florida congressman Matt Gaetz and MLB free agent Juan Soto.
Biden, Church Lady said, “is someone who actually is a lot like Jesus, because he also has a dad named Joseph whose life is made way more complicated because of him.”
“Haven’t been here in a while,” Biden began. “I’ve been laying low a little bit.

Dana Carvey resurrected his iconic Saturday Night Live Church Lady skit during the cold open for the December 7 episode.
The 69-year-old actor originated the character, who is also known as Enid Strict, all the way back in 1986. He portrays an uptight elderly woman who hosts a talk show called Church Chat where she covers current events.
He’s reprised the role several times over the years, most recently in 2016 after the presidential election. During his most recent return, he poked fun as both Matt Gaetz, who has been wrapped up in scandals, and Hunter Biden, who was recently pardoned by his father President Joe Biden.

Church Chats at Saturday Night Live are back in session.
Dana Carvey reprised his iconic character, the Church Lady, during the newest episode’s cold open, sitting down to scold Matt Gaetz, played by Sarah Sherman;, Hunter Biden, played by David Spade; and baseball player Juan Soto, played by Marcello Hernández.
“Welcome to Church Chat. I’m the Church Lady,” Carvey says. “You know, it’s great to be back to ring out the end of 2024, the most satanic year in history. Instead of Mother Mary, little girls are looking up to the Hawk Tuah girl. Well, you know what I say, instead of hawk tuah-y, you need to walk tuah-y to a church.”
Carvey continues, “Have you seen Wicked? It’s just like The Wizard of Oz, but instead of saying, ‘Lions, tigers and bears, oh my,’ they say, ‘Lions, tigers and sluts, oh yes.’ A little bit different.

Dana Carvey returned as the Church Lady for the Saturday Night Live cold open tonight, interviewing a succession of sinners, including David Spade as Hunter Biden.
“I haven’t been here in a while. I have been laying low a little bit,” Spade’s Biden told her.
“Oh, I think that’s okay. At least you haven’t been doing a podcast,” Carvey’s Church Lady told him.

“Easy, church woman,” Hunter Biden told her.
“Oh, Hunter, it’s actually Church Lady,” she responded.
“Oh, well, pardon me.”
“Pardon you? Who do you think I am, your daddy?” she replied.
And on the shtick went.
“They singled me out because of who I am. Much like Trump, they went after me because of my last name, and all the illegal things I did,” Biden insisted.
“Well, isn’t that special?...

Saturday Night Live has been in the news a lot this week thanks to a recent New York Magazine cover story that brought together an impressive number of current and former cast members including Mike Myers, Bowen Yang, Kate McKinnon, Dana Carvey and Chevy Chase, who was actually there in person, and not just photoshopped in later to avoid any potential difficulties.
The biggest takeaway from this lavish celebration of SNL’s 50th season? SNL pays like shit.
That's because Pete Davidson attracted a lot of media attention over his answer to a question about his biggest “splurge” after getting his first SNL paycheck. “Do you guys know what they pay us?” Davidson responded. “It’s like three grand an episode. I think I got dinner.”
Jason Sudeikis echoed this sentiment, telling the outlet that he simply “splurged” on paying his New York rent that month.

Thanksgiving is a time to take stock of what we have around us, give thanks, and also look to what's ahead. And when it comes to late-night TV, there's a lot to be thankful for.
Most late-night TV hosts probably weren't saying "thank you" after the election earlier this month. But that doesn't mean they're any less committed. In fact, some like Seth Meyers have said "let's f***ing go" to what's ahead.
And for late-night TV fans, there is a lot to look forward to in the coming months as the calendar flips to 2025. So this Thanksgiving, let's be thankful for the bounty of laughs late-night TV is ready to serve.

For 50 years, Saturday Night Live has invited the biggest names in movies, TV, music, comedy, sports, and more through its doors to host. And while everyone will debate who the Goat SNL host is, one story makes a pretty clear case for who should be considered the worst Saturday Night Live host of all time.
Not everyone who gets the spotlight in Studio 8H delivers. Sketch comedy is hard. Live sketch comedy in front of millions of people watching from home is even harder. But the general consensus is that if a host is game and willing to try different things, you can't ask much more of them. It's when things go the other way that a host goes from a bad fit to a disaster.
That sounds like the case when Steven Seagal hosted Saturday Night Live on April 20, 1991. If you weren't around to see the episode, just take...

It’s no secret that Saturday Night Live has been assigning some of its most high-profile political roles to celebrity friends of the show, as opposed to its current bench of talent. In the run-up to the election, SNL brought in former cast members Maya Rudolph, Dana Carvey and Andy Samberg to play Kamala Harris, Joe Biden and Doug Emhoff, respectively. Also, Jim Gaffigan was hired as Vice Presidential candidate Tim Walz — a pretty good fit, considering that Walz actually did talk about Hot Pockets while on the campaign trail.

No more Joe Biden? No problem for Dana Carvey, who debuted his weirdo Elon Musk impression in the first post-election episode of Saturday Night Live. Jumping up and down in his all-black Musk gear, Carvey did a victory lap. “Check it out, Dark Maga!” Carvey said in a heavy, inconsistent accent. “Yeah, but seriously, I run the country now.”
The real Elon Musk was not a fan. “Dana Carvey just sounds like Dana Carvey,” he complained on Twitter when someone asked his opinion of the impression. “SNL has been dying slowly for years, as they become increasingly out of touch with reality.” For the record, Musk hosted the comedy show himself in 2021, with his own ideas for how to add a little R-rated comedy to the 50-year-old institution.

During a recent episode of his “Superfly” podcast with co-host David Spade, veteran comedian Dana Carvey discussed the difficulty of mimicking Elon Musk. Carvey noted that recreating Musk’s distinct accent is not an easy assignment.
“I can’t do Elon Musk very well,” Carvey said. He defined Musk’s speech as a complicated blend of linguistic influences, saying that the accent was a mix of South African, Canadian, and Pennsylvania dialects with traces of Australian and British tones.
The controversy arose from Carvey’s recent Saturday Night Live (SNL) cold open on November 9, which depicted Musk donning a “dark Maga” hat and commenting on Donald Trump’s 2024 election triumph. Musk promptly responded to the performance on his social media site, X.

Dana Carvey admitted that his Elon Musk impression needs some work during the Friday edition of his Superfly podcast with fellow Saturday Night Live alum David Spade.

He just went right before me, and I think he was going, and then he started skipping,” he recalled on his Superfly podcast. “And I started skipping too, and skipping feels really good compared to walking or even running. It’s kinda gentle.”

Dana Carvey agrees his Elon Musk impression isn’t great.
While chatting on his “Superfly” podcast with co-host David Space, the pair briefly fell on the topic of Elon Musk. Carvey busted out a quick impression – just weeks after playing the Tesla and X owner on SNL – before admitting his Musk could use some work.
“I can’t do Elon Musk very well but I can do something that sounds not like anything,” Carvey said. “He has an incredible accent.”
Carvey appeared on “SNL” a week after Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election and played a “Dark Maga” version of Musk who hopped around the stage and admitted that he ran the government now.
“But seriously, I run the country now. America’s gonna be like one of my rockets. They’re super cool and super fun, but there’s a slight chance they could blow up and everybody dies,...

David Spade was gobsmacked when Dane Cook told him the news this week on the Fly on the Wall podcast. Cook confessed that he didn’t remember the exact details, but someone told him that he more or less hosted back-to-back episodes of Saturday Night Live. “It was like the end of one season, and I think I’m back-to-back host because I opened the next season,” he said.
Or perhaps there was one Cook-free episode in between? “Maybe it was one,” he conceded. “It was like within three episodes, I hosted twice.”
“Shit,” exclaimed Spade. “Get more famous. My God!”
Hosting (or nearly hosting) back-to-back episodes is one hell of an accomplishment. The only problem is, Cook didn’t come close to it. You’d think a comedian would remember something like this, but Cook’s two SNL hosting stints came nearly a year apart — first on December 3, 2005, then...

David Spade and Theo Von are adding a new project to their plates with the buddy comedy Busboys.
The pair wrote the script for the feature that they will star in for director Jonah Feingold. Spade and Von are self-producing and self-financing the movie that also counts Robert Ogden Barnum as a producer.
Busboys is set in an Arizona border town and centers on two pals who mistakenly believe that becoming waiters will solve all of their problems. Production is set to begin in Los Angeles on Jan. 10, 2025. A distributor and release date have not yet been announced.
“We are looking forward to gracing everyone with this comedy that no one asked for,” Spade said in a statement.
Spade launched his career on Saturday Night Live and is known for such movies as Joe Dirt, Grown Ups and The Wrong Missy. His television work includes Rules of Engagement, 8 Simple Rules and Just Shoot Me.

Good news for that one birthday party impersonator: Austin Powers might be coming back. After seemingly milking the bespectacled superspy for all he was worth more than two decades ago, Mike Myers just hinted that a reboot could be on its way sooner rather than later.
Myers recently attended New York Magazine’s Vulture Festival, where he was presented with an honorary “Master of Culture” degree for his non-Love Guru contributions to film and television. At the event, Myers recalled how he first heard about Dana Carvey from a Toronto taxi dispatcher (since he never watched Saturday Night Live growing up) and admitted that, despite being a veritable comedic catchphrase factory, he never consciously “designed” catchphrases.
But the biggest tidbit of news was revealed before he was presented with the fake degree. Speaking with TooFab outside of the venue, Myers was asked about potential revivals of some of his most iconic characters,...

“Saturday Night Live” has pulled out all the stops in recruiting hosts for their 50th season, but the show is at its best when the cast gets to shine. As a result, Charli Xcx’s turn commanding the Studio 8H stage proved to be one of the best stints yet this year. Rather than chew the scenery, Xcx blended into each sketch and let the main players flex their skills while earning laughs. Her musical performances gave her more than enough opportunity to claim the spotlight.
The night kicked off with a political cold open that satirized the Oval Office meeting between presidents Trump (James Austin Johnson) and Biden (Dana Carvey) last week, with a lot more punch than any of the sketches featured in last week’s post-election episode. We’re seven episodes in, and Saturday Night Live has a 50th anniversary problem. The season thus far has ranged from “Okay, pretty good” to “hit and miss” (Bill Burr and Michael Keaton) to “yeesh” (Jean Smart and last night’s episode with in-over-her-head Charli Xcx.) That’s par for the course for the past decade of SNL, but months of drumroll leading into the anniversary year promised more.
Last night’s show was emblematic of the season’s mediocrity. Overall, SNL continues to suffer from the same self-inflicted wounds. These are the show’s three biggest missteps so far this season…
1 Recycling Old Cast Members and Guests
This bug could have been a feature. For the show’s 50th year, why not a rotating group of former SNL all-stars? It works as both fan service and a way to bring back performers who, frankly, are surer bets than current cast members.

The election results continue to take center-stage on “Saturday Night Live,” as this week’s cold open featured Dana Carvey as Joe Biden and James Austin Johnson as Donald Trump in a sketch that drew from the pair’s recent meeting at the White House. Sitting in front of a crackling fireplace near a bouquet of roses, the pair unpacked Trump’s confounding cabinet picks, including Matt Gaetz for attorney general and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to head the health and human services department.
“Hello everybody, thank you everybody for coming to this very important transitional meeting,” said Carvey as Biden. “I’m being serious right now! Even though we disagree, we’re going to have a very respectful conversation.”
“Yeah, get a load of me,” said Johnson as Trump. “Instead of being loud and crazy like usual, I’m doing quiet and serene, which in many ways is a lot scarier.

Saturday Night Live staged a private Oval Office meeting between James Austin Johnson’s Donald Trump and Dana Carvey’s Joe Biden this weekend — a meeting that was ultimately disrupted by two of Trump’s “most epic” cabinet picks.
First up was U.S. Attorney General nominee Matt Gaetz, played by SNL cast member Sarah Sherman. After greeting Trump and Biden with a Glenn Quagmire-esque “Giggity,” Gaetz assured the president-elect that he would do a great job for him. “If anyone tries to break the law, I’ll tell them what I told my eyebrows: freeze!” the former Florida representative exclaimed.

As Saturday Night Live prepares for the comedy birthday party to end all comedy birthday parties, expect plenty of classic characters to get their encore flowers. Maybe Wayne and Garth will get in one last schwing! Stefon might reignite his love affair with Seth Meyers. Eddie Murphy could break out Mr. Robinson or Gumby.
But thanks to evolving cultural norms around comedy, these 10 SNL characters are virtually guaranteed not to get an invite to the festivities. Sorry, Merv the Perv, you’re not on the list.

Pat was Julia Sweeney’s signature SNL character, showing up 12 times to repeat the same tired joke: No one could tell if the androgynous character was a man or a woman. Playing gender identity for laughs isn’t cool — and it doesn’t help that whiny, whinging Pat was insufferable.
2 Ching Chang @sassollou
Dana Carvey often brings up his cringe Asian character as...

Discourse surrounding the female-led 2016 Ghostbusters remake, not unlike Vigo the Carpathian and whatever the hell Slimer is, just won’t die.
Earlier this year its director, Paul Feig, made headlines for suggesting that “so many” of the film’s critics were “Trump supporters,” and original Ghostbuster Dan Aykroyd sang the remake’s praises while also bemoaning the high budget. He was right, of course, but nobody wants a lesson in cinematic restraint from the producer of Blues Brothers 2000.
One of the movie’s stars, Melissa McCarthy, just weighed in on the eight-year-old controversy, and seemingly has zero fucks left to give.
Back when the movie came out, McCarthy was pretty diplomatic when discussing the online backlash, chalking it all up to a “tiny” minority of fans who happened to be “very loud” on the internet.
In retrospect, it’s amazing how restrained the entire Ghostbusters crew was on this subject,...

“Frankly, it was only on the Thursday before the Saturday that Any of the sketches generated laughs. I was worried,” he wrote on Twitter/X. “I was like damn my SNL appearance is going to be so fucking unfunny that it will make a crackhead sober!! But then it worked out in the end.”
Chloe‘s confession came after castmate Bowen Yang said a guest host made “multiple cast members cry,” and she spilled that it was Elon after...

"Saturday Night Live" star Chloe Fineman, known for her impressions of pop culture figures like Jennifer Coolidge, Britney Spears, and JoJo Siwa, opened up in a (now-deleted) TikTok about the fact that Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk made a bunch of cast members cry when he hosted the late-night institution in 2021.
"Ok, I just saw some news article about Elon Musk being like butt-hurt over 'SNL' and his impression, but I'm like you're clearly watching the show, like what are you talking about?" Fineman said in the clip (via The Hollywood Reporter). "And I'm like, you know what? I'm gonna come out and say at long last that I'm the castmember that he made cry. And he's the host that made someone cry."
To clarify, the mystery surrounding the "host that made someone cry" actually started a little while ago thanks to Fineman's fellow cast member Bowen Yang,...

Elon Musk has responded to “Saturday Night Live” cast member Chloe Fineman revealing that he made her cry in the days leading up to his appearance on the show. And he’s taken a relatively diplomatic tone, though stopping short of actually issuing an apology.
Let’s back up a sec. After Dana Carvey made his debut as Musk on “SNL” November 9, the Tesla CEO was not happy. “‘SNL’ has been dying slowly for years, as they become increasingly out of touch with reality,” he posted on X. He also criticized Carvey by saying “Dana Carvey just sounds like Dana Carvey.”
Fineman was not pleased about his remarks. So she took to TikTok to deliver a full-on rebuttal. She has since deleted the post.
“Okay, I just saw some news article about Elon Musk being like butthurt about SNL and his impression, but I’m like ‘You’re clearly watching the show!
