South Korean cinema-goers will get a three-day jump on the rest of the world when the Bong Joon-ho-directed “Mickey 17” releases in January 2025 in time for the Lunar New Year holidays.
Warner Bros. Pictures says that the Robert Pattinson-starring sci-fi film will open in Korea on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2025, ahead of its global outing on Jan. 31.
The film was originally announced as opening in cinemas in March 2024, but Wbd recently pushed that back by nine months to allow the picture to be completed. Production had been affected by Hollywood’s writers’ and actors’ strikes in 2023.
“Mickey 17” is Bong’s first feature as director since “Parasite,” which became the first non-English language movie to win best picture at the Oscars. In addition to writing and directing, Bong also produces the upcoming film through his company Offscreen. Additional producers include Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner of Plan B and Dooho Choi of Kate Street Pictures.

Maestro star Bradley Cooper was the victim of brutal trolls this awards season, most of which came out of an alleged rivalry with Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy. While Cooper never made any ill comments towards his awards competitors, the actor’s several actions clearly suggest that he yearns for Oscar recognition. He was famously snubbed for the Best Actor Award at the 94th Academy Award for the film Nightmare Alley, which fans are celebrating on X now.
Bradley Cooper in Maestro (2023)
Many fans believed that Cooper was also snubbed for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar the same year for his brief appearance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza. The Guardians of the Galaxy actor is currently among the Oscar nominees for his performance as Leonard Bernstein in Maestro.

Horror movies have had a limited impact on the Academy Awards, with only six Best Picture nominations since the awards started. While no horror movies made the 2024 Best Picture nominees, past nominees like Black Swan and Get Out are still interesting to revisit. The Exorcist and The Silence of the Lambs are among the few horror movies to win Oscars, with the latter dominating in all major categories.
It has often been said the Academy Awards don't particularly like scary movies, but there have been some rare horror movies nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. As of 2024, six horror movies have been up for the top prize, which is a small number considering that the awards started nearly 100 years ago. Such classics of the genre like The Shining and Psycho have been snubbed along with critically acclaimed modern horror movies like Hereditary and The Witch. However, that makes the...

Exclusive: Following a major bidding battle that went through the weekend, Amazon MGM Studios has landed an untitled thriller written by Natalie Krinsky, with Kim Kardashian attached to star and produce. Bruna Papandrea is also producing through her Made Up Stories banner alongside Krinsky.
According to sources, Amazon was one of five studios in the mix. With all being sorted out, sources close to the project say a theatrical or streaming release plan is possible, though nothing is confirmed given the early nature of the project.
Not much is known about the pic other than it being a thriller developed specifically for Kardashian. This marks the second massive package sold since the SAG-AFTRA strike ended with Kardashian front and center, after Netflix landed her comedy The Fifth Wheel over Thanksgiving; insiders say the latest deal is even more lucrative then that package.

Oscar Weekend is coming up, and everyone is wondering if Oppenheimer will sustain its Awards push. Or will Lily Gladstone will take the Best Actress statue from clear front-runner Emma Stone after her surprising SAG win? But there’s one thing that comes across my mind every Oscar weekend: which horror movie deserved to make the cut yet didn’t? I’ve chronicled in the past how much the Academy tends to look the other way regarding great horror performances. But what about the films themselves? After the Best Picture nomination pool was expanded to ten films, we’ve seen movies that otherwise wouldn’t, get a place amongst the year’s best. They wanted to recognize those films making a cultural impact.
And while that position has mostly been reserved for comic book movies and summer blockbusters, I think it’s well past time that we give horror its due.

French filmmaker Leos Carax discussed the sacred nature of the image and the challenge of retaining its power on the big screen in the digital age in an on-stage conversation at the Doha Film Institute’s Qumra event on Monday.

Jim Sheridan has dispelled rumors around a possible return to acting by Daniel Day-Lewis, who gave an Oscar-winning performance in the Irish director’s drama My Left Foot and also starred in his subsequent films In The Name Of The Father and The Boxer.
Rumors have been rife that Day-Lewis, who retired from acting in 2017, might be contemplating a return to the big screen after he was photographed by paparazzi coming out of a New York restaurant with Sheridan and Steven Spielberg in early January.
Sheridan said the trio had been holding a meeting about a possible reboot of his long-gestating project about the Kennedy family, focused on its social climber-patriarch Joseph Kennedy.
“We were talking about a project. Daniel was only going to be involved, if he did get involved, as an executive producer, not as an actor,” said Sheridan.

Despite being a box office flop, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is now a global hit on Netflix. With 6.5 million viewers, it landed at No. 5 on Netflix's global Top 10 list of English-language movies for the week. The possibility of a movie sequel seemed unlikely, but the movie's Netflix success may lead to further installments.
Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is now a global hit on Netflix. The animated feature starred Lana Condor in the title role as a young woman who is trying to hide the fact that she and her family are secretly sea monsters. The star-studded ensemble voice cast of the movie also included Toni Collette as Ruby's mother Agatha, Colman Domingo as her father Arthur, Jane Fonda as her Grandmamah, and Annie Murphy as the wicked mermaid Queen Nerissa. In spite of this, the movie was a major flop in theaters and is estimated to have lost Universal $80 million.

It's no secret that in the nearly 100 years of ceremonies, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has not particularly been kind when it comes to recognizing the talent and groundbreaking films in the horror genre. Whether it's completely passing over an amazing performance such as Lupita Nyong'o in Us or Toni Collette in Hereditary or just outright ignoring the technical craft and visuals, horror films are often ignored during awards season because of their dated status as a taboo genre.

Dune: Part Two will likely dominate 2024 with a visually stunning and epic story that sets it up for massive success. Mickey 17 once rivaled Dune: Part Two as one of the most exciting sci-fi movies before being pushed back to 2025. The change in Mickey 17's release date benefited both films - Mickey 17 stands a better chance to shine in 2025 without direct competition, and Dune: Part Two lost its biggest competitor for the year.
Dune: Part Two will likely be the most exciting science fiction movie of 2024, but another film threatened to take the title before being pushed back to 2025, and the delay helped both movies. Based on the legendary book by Frank Herbert, Dune: Part Two will complete the story set up by the ending of Dune. Director Denis Villeneuve has both his own incredible visual style and an amazing story to work with, which set Dune: Part Two up for massive success.

It appears that Robert Pattinson’s much-awaited project, Mickey 17, has gotten the short end of the stick due to Warner Bros.’ massive gamble on Leonardo DiCaprio’s next flick. The Titanic star, 49, will be helmed by Paul Thomas Anderson in an untitled movie that is scheduled to start shooting in California this year. Even so, we can’t help but wonder if sidelining Pattinson’s flick was a wise choice in this regard.
Pattinson, best known for his role as Edward Cullen in the Twilight saga, has been carving out a niche for himself as a talented and versatile actor over the last few years. His performances in films such as The Lighthouse and Good Time received critical acclaim, so it is no surprise that fans are looking forward to this upcoming sci-fi film.

Bong Joon-ho’s highly anticipated science fiction thriller, Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson has been in the news for quite a time. The Warner Bros. film, originally set to hit theaters on March 29, 2024, was pushed back to a new release date. The film written, directed, and produced by the Oscar-winning Parasite director was previously delayed indefinitely. It’s now set to hit theaters on January 31, 2025, per reports.
Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes
Adapted from author Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel Mickey 7, the film was expected to have Joon-ho put his trademark tonal shifts from the source material. Seeing Waner Bros. not much hyping the movie, many fans have a feeling that it might see the path like Coyote vs Acme, which has officially been shelved despite finishing the production in 2022, after earlier reports of it being uncanceled.

“Mickey 17” is looking more like “Mickey 2025.”
South Korean director Bong Joon-ho’s hotly anticipated follow-up to his Best Picture-winning film “Parasite” was originally set for release in just about a month from now by Warner Bros. Discovery. In January, citing post-production delays and the lingering effect of the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, the studio removed it from the calendar and slipped “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” in its place. Tuesday, it was announced that the Robert Pattinson-led picture won’t get released this year at all and, instead, will come next (eek!) January.
January is, uh, not when an auteur-led movie with a sterling cast like this is usually released, so the date does raise some eyebrows. Variety noted that the new date guarantees placement in IMAX houses, and coincides with Lunar New Year, which is a big movie-going day internationally.

We now have to wait until January next year to see Parasite director Bong Joon-ho’s highly-anticipated sci-fi project, Mickey 17.
When we learned in January that Warner Bros had removed Mickey 17 from its March release slot, there was plenty of speculation about when we’d actually get to see the film.
Talk mostly focused on possible reasons for the film’s delay: some speculated that it was to keep Mickey 17 clear of Dune: Part II, Warner Bros’ other huge upcoming sci-fi movie directed by an auteur filmmaker. If you recall, the studio pushed that project into March because of last year’s strikes.
There was also talk that (due to those very same strikes) post-production CGI work was taking longer than planned and given that the film is directed by awards darling Bong Joon-ho, the notion was floated that a May 2024 release would allow the film to...

Warner Bros has dated Mickey 17 for Jan. 31, 2025 — a very odd date for a highly anticipated follow-up from Oscar and Cannes Palme d’Or winning Parasite filmmaker Bong Joon-ho.
What’s key about the date is that Warner Bros will have Imax, furthermore next January is starving for wide releases. But the reason why the studio went with this date is to play off Lunar New Year in South Korea.
The title is a major part of Warner Bros.’ CinemaCon presentation this year.
Originally, Mickey 17 was to go on March 29, shortly after Dune: Part Two this year but the strikes pushed the movie. We kept hearing it wasn’t ready. Still that didn’t stop everyone from panting that the sci-fi feature could hit Cannes. There were never any plans for the movie to go to Cannes.

Mickey 17 is back on the theatrical calendar. The feature from Oscar winning Parasite director Bong Joon Ho will now open on Jan. 31, 2025, Warner Bros. announced Tuesday.
Last month, Warners removed it from its previous date of March 29, 2024. The film was delayed due to production shifts caused by the strikes. At the time of the announcement, the delay was not a surprise, as no trailer had been released as its date inched closer and closer, leading to speculation it would move.
Robert Pattinson stars in the adaptation of the 2022 novel Mickey 7, from author Edward Ashton. In the novel, Mickey 7 is a space colonist known as an expendable. (In fact, he is the seventh iteration of a man named Mickey Barnes.) Each colony features an expendable, a crewmember who takes deadly jobs but who are then restored via clone bodies when they die. Ashton published the sequel, Antimatter Blues, last year.

The subgenre of "Christmas movies" has been a curious one of late. While new movies set during the holiday season or others explicitly concerning it are released every year (especially holiday horror), it feels like we haven't gotten a new classic, gotta-watch-this-every-year holiday movie in a while. That's because, in all honesty, most classics aren't made, they're grown; it takes a few years for most films to prove their durability, and some that are overlooked upon their initial release get rediscovered and slowly morph into seasonal staples.
Filmmaker Michael Dougherty is intimately familiar with this process, as it's happened to him at least twice with two movies about two different holidays. His anthology of Halloween hijinks, 2007's "Trick 'r Treat," barely got a theatrical release before word of mouth allowed it to gain a cult reputation strong enough that a sequel has been rumored for years, and may actually happen.

Robert Pattinson's upcoming sci-fi film Mickey 17 marks his return to the genre and could redeem his underrated sci-fi role. Pattinson's previous emotionally-driven sci-fi role in High Life showcases his range and ability to tackle challenging narratives. High Life, despite its critical acclaim, didn't reach a mainstream audience, but Mickey 17 has the potential to elevate Pattinson's sci-fi credentials with Bong Joon-ho's broader appeal.
In 2014, Robert Pattinson will star in Bong Joon-ho's upcoming sci-fi movie Mickey 17. The star of The Batman has recently taken on a plethora of intriguing roles, from his voice work in The Boy and the Heron to his performance in The Lighthouse. That said, Pattinson's team-up with the Oscar-winning Parasite director is exciting in its own right. However, Mickey 17 also marks Pattinson's return to science-fiction. With 2024's most anticipated sci-fi film is a whopping five years in the making, it's about time Mickey 17 makes its debut.

Mark Ruffalo is calling for an Israel-Hamas ceasefire. At the DGA awards in Beverly Hills on Saturday night he told Deadline the pins on his lapel represented “peace lillies and Artists for Ceasefire”.
Ruffalo said that Artists for Ceasefire is “calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. There are 1,200 Israelis dead and 27,000 Palestinians,” he continued.
“We’ve come to understand this bombing isn’t working, we’re not going to bomb our way to peace, and all we’re saying is, what’s wrong with giving a ceasefire a chance? We have a million refugees on the border of Rafah right now, who are looking at another bombing surge, and we have 400,000 people starving to death right now, without any humanitarian aid being able to get in there. So we’re asking the leaders of the world, especially President Biden, to demand a ceasefire, a lasting ceasefire, and give...
