Netflix has a great way of churning out excellent original series. The films the streamer does can be great, too. Or some of them can be purely fluff.
The great thing about having a Netflix subscription, though, is that you don't only need to see Netflix Originals. You see a whole scope of movies made by other studios. That can be both good and bad.
But writing optimistically, there are 12 examples below of why you should be grateful to have a Netflix subscription. Each of these films is a winner. You will not be disappointed.
12 movies you should not miss streaming on Netflix in January 2025Paddington 2
Paddington 2 is a perfect movie. This is not written as a fan of children's films solely, as the film is entertaining for people of all ages. There are enough heart-warming moments, more than enough laughs, and a bad guy played wonderfully by Hugh Grant.

The cast of Saturday Night Live shares a bond unlike most anything else in television. The small group of performers spend countless hours together in pursuit of comedy. So when SNL fired one cast member in the '90s, it was no surprise to hear a couple of his colleagues took a stand.
Chris Parnell has the distinct honor of being fired from Saturday Night Live twice. The first came in 2001 after he joined the cast in 1998. SNL brought Parnell back halfway through the next season only to show him the door again in 2006.
The first firing came as a bit of a shock to Parnell. He thought he was hitting his stride, but his clashes with Lorne Michaels didn't help his case. He learned in the summer of 2001 that Michaels and SNL chose not to renew his contract.
In an interview with Cracked, Parnell reflected on the experience. He...

Combined star power only takes this overfamiliar caper so far, let down by an unfunny script and a lack of originality
The last time we saw Cameron Diaz on screen, it was way back in 2014. The star, who had been such a magnetic force in Being John Malkovich, My Best Friend’s Wedding and There’s Something About Mary, had checked out with a trio of pale production line films that represented what we’d grimly come to expect at that stage of her career. Diaz had once easily moved between dark and light as well as large and small, had smoothed out any of her more interesting edges to become one of the industry’s highest-paid yet most boringly unchallenged stars. That year saw her lost in the juvenile comedies The Other Woman and Sex Tape before being horrendously miscast in a dud remake of Annie and not long after, she chose to retire,...

Back in 1993, Conan O’Brien’s career seemed like it might end before it really even began when NBC nearly canceled his fledging 12:30 am talk show, convinced they’d made a mistake by handing over David Letterman’s desk to an unknown comedy writer barely out of his twenties. But they kept him on the air and O’Brien found his comedic voice along with a mass audience. Today, he’s a beloved elder statesman with a hit podcast, a brilliant new travel show, and an upcoming stint as the host of the Academy Awards.

For countless comedians, Saturday Night Live is a dream job and would be the crowning achievement of their career. But one cast member had second thoughts and even went so far as to ask Lorne Michaels to fire him. Thankfully, the SNL boss refused.
Saturday Night Live has a long list of fired cast members. Some, like Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, and Norm Macdonald, deserved a longer tenure. However, others were let go at the right time for various reasons, whether it was clashing with Michaels or failing to produce quality content. But it's hard to imagine many SNL cast members asked to be fired.
Enter Pete Davidson. The stand-up comedian admitted in the Peacock documentary SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night that he asked to be fired from the show. According to Davidson, feeling like an imposter or a fraud influenced the request.

Conan O’Brien is the latest comedian to be feted at the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
The former host of Conan and The Tonight Show will receive the award on March 23 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
The ceremony will air on Netflix, although the streamer, which took on the event last year, didn’t air it live.
Kevin Hart was last year’s recipient and previous honorees include Dave Chappelle, Adam Sandler, Jon Stewart, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Steve Martin, George Carlin, Tina Fey, Carol Burnett and Richard Pryor.
Last year, Netflix struck a multi-year deal with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to air the event. The event previously aired on CNN and before that PBS aired it for over 20 years. Comedy Central hosted it before PBS.
The 26th Mark Twain Prize will be produced by David Jammy and the team at Done+Dusted.

Iconic American comedy show Saturday Night Live turns 50 this year, kicking off the celebrations is a four part documentary.
It’s no exaggeration to say that Saturday Night Live is responsible for launching the careers of a huge amount of American comedy talent, from the early days with Gilda Radner, Chevy Chase, John Belushi, and Bill Murray, through eras with the much missed Phil Hartman, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, Mike Myers, Molly Shannon, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wiig and many, many more.
This month sees the release of Saturday Night in the UK, following its release in the US last year. It’s a new film from Jason Reitman, who co-wrote the script with Gil Keenan, and it dramatizes the chaotic, stressful ninety minutes leading up to the very first show in 1975. On a recent episode of “The Pat McAfee Show,” Travis Kelce discussed how exciting it was to work with comedy legend Adam Sandler. Kelce will appear alongside Sandler in Netflix’s “Happy Gilmore 2,” which is set for a 2025 release. The Kansas City Chiefs tight end is cast in a currently undisclosed role; in a recently released teaser, he appears to play some sort of country club employee.

While he is by no means top-billed, Kelce said he has “a few” scenes in the film, and that shooting for “Happy Gilmore 2” was “a hefty load” of work.
“They’re so professional and yet so fun to work with,” Kelce added.

Funny business is pretty damn lucrative, at least according to Celebrity Net Worth. If we believe its numbers, a guy like Rowan (Mr. Bean) Atkinson can rack up a net worth of $150 million, and still not crack the list of the top 20 richest comedians.
Which jokesters make up the top 10? Here’s the updated list as of January 5, 2025.
10 Larry David and David Letterman (Tie)
With a net worth of about $400 million each, David and Letterman make this rich-guy version of a Late Night Top Ten list. Now that Curb Your Enthusiasm is done, is David done raking in the cash? That’s what we thought when Letterman “retired” from CBS, but the guy is everywhere.
9 Adam Sandler
The Sandman is a good candidate to keep climbing this list as Netflix can’t get enough of his collabs with old buddies like Rob Schneider and David Spade. With rehashes like this...

‘It’s the moment when genius comes into the universe’: the film recreating SNL’s chaotic first night
A new drama recalls the wild first broadcast of Saturday Night Live in 1975. Making it was as much of a high-wire act as the show itself, the film’s director Jason Reitman and stars reveal
There is no show in history more obsessed with its own lore than Saturday Night Live. Almost every week the long-running sketch show is sprinkled with returning alumni and jokes that reference the show’s illustrious and controversial past: its social club status for the great and good of New York; the drug-fuelled deaths of its brightest lights such as John Belushi and Chris Farley; the superstars it created in Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell and Tina Fey, to name but five of hundreds.
SNL is so fabled that it’s already inspired scores of documentaries and numerous scripted TV shows based on it, including 30 Rock and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.

While Swift has already reached a net worth of $1.6 billion, the Kansas City Chiefs star still needs to catch up with his more modest $90 million fortune.
However, as their romance continues to flourish, the idea of a wedding and potential joint ventures seems increasingly likely.

At the 94th Academy Awards celebrated the hard work of Hollywood’s artists but unfortunately, the event will always be remembered as the night when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock. The entire Slapgate controversy became a shadowy cloud over the 2022 Oscars and no one has forgotten it to this day. A few months ago, comedy genre connoisseur Adam Sandler joined Joe Rogan for his podcast and guess what they talked about among other things?

Over 37,000 residents, including numerous celebrities and industry leaders, remain under evacuation orders as a quad of fires wreak havoc across the Los Angeles area this week, killing at least five people as the blazes continue to be aided by intense winds that have reached nearly 100 mph. Such high winds are hindering firefighters’ efforts, and the fires are seeing “no percentage of containment,” instead ripping across thousands of acres of L.A. County and destroying an estimated 3,000 structures and counting, the county fire department said on Wednesday, starkly indicating that the worst is still yet to come.
On Wednesday afternoon, an expanded evacuation order was issued for Santa Monica, including all areas north of Montana Avenue from the beach to 11th Street. Residents in this area were told that they must leave immediately and the area was closed to public access. The city’s evacuation warning remains for all additional areas...

Angelenos who have lost their homes or had to make harrowing escapes under evacuation orders due to the fast-growing wildfires that are burning with zero containment across Los Angeles County are finding refuge in some of the city’s most storied hotels at discounted room rates, and with no Fema emergency voucher required.
The Kimpton La Peer Hotel, just off Melrose Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood’s Design District, quickly filled up Tuesday and remains full through Thursday with fire storm evacuees. “There are lots of families and pets running around the hotel. We have laid out a grazing station for all guests in the lobby, offering warm chocolate chip cookies, cocoa, snacks and drinks for everyone to enjoy during this difficult time,” a La Peer spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter.

Jennifer Aniston Discussing Friends Pay Struggles (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Can you imagine the Friends cast tearing apart overpay? Well, Jennifer Aniston spilled the tea, revealing the one thing that almost did just that: money. “It was tough,” she confessed, reflecting on the early days when salary differences could’ve driven a serious wedge between the iconic six. Yikes, right?
Friends was the sitcom of the moment, and while the laughs were flowing, so were the paychecks—especially for Aniston and David Schwimmer. By the 2nd season, they were already raking in more cash than the rest of the crew. “It was more about, ‘We’re doing equal work, and we all deserve to be compensated in the same way,’” Jennifer shared. Oh, the solidarity! No ego was allowed to grow—at least not that much.
But here’s the kicker: instead of letting those differences mess with their bond, Aniston...

Pacific Palisades resident Steve Guttenberg says the blaze that is burning through his community is “the most unbelievable I’ve ever seen.”
The actor, who appeared on CNN on Tuesday night, was one of 30,000 residents under evacuation orders after the fire broke out around 10:30 a.m. that morning. On CNN, he described the daytime scene, saying that due to the smoke, he said, “The sky was dark, like it was nighttime.” (See photos.)
Guttenberg spoke about helping people who were trying to evacuate the area, echoing comments he’d made earlier to Ktla. On the Pacific Coast Highway, he got out of his car to help people and saw a heartbreaking scene.
There were “mothers who were having panic attacks [and] little kids crying. … The cars were bumper-to-bumper traffic for over two miles and it was dangerous, the police were coming. … I spent all day moving these cars up on the hill,...

An extreme wind event is threatening one of Los Angeles’ toniest neighborhoods, igniting fires through Pacific Palisades.
Winds have been gusting in spurts sparking brush fires around 10:30 a.m. that have expanded to 2,900 acres as of early Tuesday evening, with zero percent containment, per the Los Angeles Fire Department. (See photos.) California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a “state of emergency.”
Among the residents who call the area home are Jennifer Aniston, Bradley Cooper, Eugene Levy, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Adam Sandler, Michael Keaton, Miles Teller, Michael Mann, Ann Sarnoff, Carol Lombardini, Alan Bergman, Kathleen Kennedy, Steve Guttenberg and James Woods.
Overnight going into Wednesday, Santa Monica and Malibu published evacuation orders. “City of Santa Monica is issuing an Evacuation Order for all areas of the city north of San Vicente,” the city said on X. “Evacuation Order: Immediate threat to life. This is a lawful order to Leave Now.

Netflix has reshaped the entertainment industry in countless ways, and one of those paradigm shifts has lessened the impact of the company’s own data. In a long-form dissection of the streamer’s business philosophy, N+1 writer Will Tavlin argues that Netflix has “created a pyramid scheme of attention” by funneling subscribers toward content that can easily exist as a second screen.
Tavlin’s piece has received widespread attention because of its references to Hollywood screenwriters, who claimed that Netflix told them to “have this character announce what they’re doing so that viewers who have this program on in the background can follow along.” To show how that note is being put into effect, Tavlin notes a particular passage from the Netflix original film Irish Wish, starring Lindsay Lohan.
“We spent a day together,” Lohan’s character says to her love interest. “I admit it was a beautiful day...

However, he’s only recently started writing and directing, releasing two features so far (“When You Finish Saving the World” and “A Real Pain”). And according to actor-filmmaker, we have Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”) to thank for this new direction in his career.

Amy Schumer pretends she’s a mom-to-be in the new trailer for Netflix’s R-rated comedy “Kinda Pregnant.”
In the film, Schumer plays Lainy Newton, a newly single teacher who wants to be a mother. So, she understandably gets a little jealous after discovering her best friend, Kate (Jillian Bell), is pregnant, leading Lainy to tell a slight fabrication… in the form of donning a fake baby bump. Her deception is complicated by the fact that she meets her dream man (Will Forte) while acting like she’s with child.
“Do you ever tell, like, such a big lie you don’t know how to get out of it?” she asks in the trailer. Lainy commits to her fabrication, though, going along with the gestation of her fake baby and new relationship at the same time.

Because the world is a cruel place to beautiful souls like Adam Sandler, Ariana Grande can’t get through The Waterboy without some waterworks.
On paper, the story of The Waterboy and Bobby Boucher is practically a tragedy — a young man grows up in a repressive religious household raised by a traumatized and manipulative single mother, and his only escape from this rural, swampy poverty is through channeling his deep-seated pain and rage into physical violence that’s exploited for entertainment purposes.
Honestly, a critical read of the Sandler classic could interpret The Waterboy as an indictment of America’s obsession with violence, our insufficient education system and the controlling nature of fundamentalist Christianity in rural communities.
Maybe that’s why the pop star Grande weeps when she sees Boucher victimized onscreen, as she revealed in a recent interview clip that demands a watch after Nikki Glaser made beautiful celebrities...

Catherine O’Hara may call the Golden Globes “prestigious,” but Sunday’s live event on CBS/Paramount+ was still the trashy, not-quite-cool but entertaining awards show, as possibly too-young-for-the-room host Nikki Glaser got some laughs (especially around Adam Sandler and Timothée Chalamet) while earning furrowed brows from the likes of Harrison Ford and Cate Blanchett. Mainly the audience enjoyed watching stars like Glen Powell and Globe perennial Nicole Kidman (20 nods) smash elbows over free-flowing drinks and Nobu sushi in the Beverly Hilton.
The old Golden Globes cabal of Hollywood foreign correspondents would likely have also voted for Demi Moore in French-flavored “The Substance.” Her passionate speech about the dangers of undervaluing yourself gives her a huge leg up in the Oscar race for Best Actress. Actors understand her feelings, and what Coralie Fargeat’s feminist horror tale “The Substance” is all about.
The new Golden Globes consist of about 70 one-time HFPA members still based in L.

This year’s Golden Globe Awards ceremony was full of unexpected brilliant moments after some troublesome years. Taking place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, the ceremony was graced by Hollywood stars and presenters like Dwayne Johnson, Demi Moore, and Ke Huy Quan, while comedian Nikki Glaser, who recently hosted Netflix’s The Roast of Tom Brady, hosted the event.

Glaser began the show by telling the audience it was “Ozempic’s biggest night” and then made sure to tell everyone she wouldn’t be in full roast mode, but what she proceeded to do was a near-perfect balance of jokes and digs. Though more restrained than the previous hosts like Ricky Gervais, Glaser made sure that nobody was really safe from humor.

There was a time when actor Charlie Sheen seemed unstoppable. His CBS sitcom, "Two and a Half Men," was so wildly popular that it allowed him to become the highest-paid actor on television when he signed a contract in 2010 for two more seasons of the show at $1.78 million per episode. He had dealt with some personal demons and emerged from rehab seemingly all the stronger, ready to earn a tremendous amount of money and make America laugh alongside co-stars Jon Cryer and Angus T. Jones. Better yet, he got to have a good bit of fun embellishing his own semi-rock star status by playing a character named Charlie who was clearly inspired by Sheen himself. Unfortunately, he fell from these great heights with incredible speed when he was fired from "Two and a Half Men" effective immediately in March of 2011.

A touch of neurosis, a lot of laughs and plenty of profound insights could be found at The Hollywood Reporter’s Writer Roundtable, where six scribes who crafted seven of 2024’s top screenplays gathered for a lively conversation in November. James Mangold (A Complete Unknown, with Jay Cocks) and Jason Reitman (Saturday Night, with Gil Kenan) have been writing screenplays and then directing them for decades (they received Oscar noms for their scripts Logan and Up in the Air, respectively). Jesse Eisenberg (A Real Pain) and Halina Reijn (Babygirl) are best known as actors — he was Oscar-nominated for The Social Network, while she has been a stage and screen standout in her native Netherlands — but within the past few years had several screenplays made into films, under their own direction. Going from the it-couple of the industry into a cautionary tale about what can go wrong when two movie stars get too close, Pitt’s alleged infidelity with Angelina Jolie has become widely known.

The story has been told time and time again, with one easily assuming that he is not on good terms with either of his ex-wives. While it is common knowledge that this is the case for Jolie, with their very messy legal troubles still going on, it would seem that the same cannot be said about Aniston’s relationship with Pitt.
The Friends actress once revealed that she still holds her relationship with Pitt close to her heart, going as far as to say that she will always love him.

Nikki Glaser took the stage as host of the Golden Globes on Sunday, bringing her signature humor and sharp wit to the event she jokingly dubbed “Ozempic’s biggest night.” No one was off-limits as she roasted nominees, streamers, and even music mogul Diddy.
One of her standout moments came when Glaser applauded Zendaya for her role in Challengers before pivoting to a jab at Diddy. “That movie was more sexually charged than Diddy’s credit card,” she quipped, catching the audience by surprise.
She followed up with, “I mean, seriously. Oh no, no, I know, I’m sorry, I’m upset too. The afterparty’s not going to be as good this year, but we have to move on!”
Glaser didn’t dive straight into the deep end, though. She began the night by reflecting on the achievements of the actors in 2024, adding a cheeky observation: “Except tell the country who to vote for.

High: Nikki Glaser brought her exceptional roast comedy skills to the Globes’ opening monologue, delivering a tight 10-minute set featuring well-placed jabs at the state of the industry, from Ozempic’s influence to Peacock’s lack of it. She pushed the envelope just far enough — “I predict five years from now, like when you’re watching little clips of the show on YouTube, you’ll see someone in one of the crowd shots, and you’ll go, ‘Oh my God, that was before they caught that guy!'” — without going overboard. And she found...

Inside the Beverly Hilton at Sunday’s Golden Globes provided a dramatically different viewing experience from anything you saw on television. Gold Derby’s reporters were stationed throughout the room, the backstage area, and, yes, the bar to record all the key moments that weren’t broadcast by CBS’ camera crews.
Here’s the best of what we saw.
Serious security
In the wake of the New Orleans terrorist attack, the level of security at the Globes was unprecedented. The streets surrounding the Beverly Hilton were cleared of vehicles and there was a more pronounced police presence from years past. The shuttle ferrying production crew, publicists, and media from the off-site lot to the Hilton had to navigate a circuitous route through and around secruity, making the normally 2-minute trip into a 20-minute odyssey.
A-list stragglers
There was mad dash from the red carpet into the ballroom before they closed the doors — Karla Sofía Gascón,...
