In 2002, Garth was diagnosed with a leaky heart valve, a condition she stated would require monitoring for the rest of her life. She revealed the diagnosis in 2009.

Auditioned for the role of Kelly Kapowski on Saved by the Bell (1989), but the role eventually went to her subsequent Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990) co-star, Tiffani Thiessen.
