The Crow opens on Devil's Night, an evening of mischief and mayhem in Detroit, Michigan. The evening before Halloween, the Motor City is awash in iridescent orange light as cars and buildings are set ablaze. If not for the endless rain, there would be no respite from the fire. Alt-rocker Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) and his fiancé, Shelly Webster (Sofia Shinas), are going to get married tomorrow. That is, until they're both horrifically murdered at the hands of Paradise Lost-quoting criminal named T-Bird (David Patrick Kelly) and his merry band of sadistic killers.
One year later, it's Devil's Night again. The city is burning once more -- if it ever stopped. A crow visits Eric Draven's grave, resurrecting and imbuing him with otherworldly powers that can take others' pain and withstand gunshots. A young girl, Sarah (Rochelle Davis), who knew Eric and Shelly, will tell us that a "crow...

It's official: "Ghostbusters" is now a $1 billion franchise. Just shy of 40 years after the classic horror/comedy originally arrived in theaters back in 1984, the films have hit a major milestone at the box office thanks to the latest entry, "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire." Thanks to the new film's opening weekend haul, the series has now ascended the ranks to become one of the relatively few franchises in cinema history that can claim to have made ten figures or more in ticket sales.
Director Gil Kenan's "Frozen Empire" opened to $45 million over the weekend domestically, putting it on top of the charts in its debut. The Sony Pictures release also pulled in $16 million internationally, giving the film a $61 million start to its theatrical run. Looking at the bigger picture, that was enough to push the franchise past the $1 billion mark. The films have collectively grossed $1.005 billion through the years across four decades and five films.

The 2016 Ghostbusters reboot, despite a good director, didn't resonate with fans due to the title and expectations. Fans wanted to see the Og team return, which was fulfilled with the successful legacy sequel Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Director Gil Kenan and producer Jason Reitman are happy with the response to Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and plan for more stories.
Ghostbusters veteran Ernie Hudson has shared his reasoning as to why 2016's reboot, Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, just did not resonate with audiences. The return of the Ghostbusters franchise with 2021's Afterlife, and this year's sequel, Frozen Empire, has received a resounding thumbs up from long-term fans, but the Melissa McCarthy-led attempt to reinvigorate the franchise did not get the same reception.

The 2016 Ghostbusters might be one of the most flames major productions of this century, with the trailer quickly becoming the most disliked on YouTube. There were a couple of camps here. One was targeted as being misogynistic, taking personal affront that their beloved characters had been replaced by women. While another is that there just didn’t seem like a point to it all. Why bother if you don’t have the original Ghosbusters? Well, one late recruit — Ernie Hudson, who played Winston Zeddemore — has some thoughts on the matter.
As Ernie Hudson told The Independent, it seemed like a waste to make the Ghostbusters back in 2016, saying, “Look, I’m a fan of [director] Paul Feig so I have nothing negative about him to say. Other than: I don’t quite understand why you do a reboot, you know what I mean? Just make another movie.”

Ernie Hudson, the 78-year-old actor who has appeared in all five of the “Ghostbusters” movies and several “Ghostbusters” video games, spoke with The Independent about the franchise in the lead-up to “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.”
The role of Winston Zeddmore was originally offered to Eddie Murphy, and when that didn’t happen, his character’s screen time was greatly reduced. As such, Hudson’s pay was much smaller than that of the other three Ghostbusters, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis (the latter two also wrote the script). He also did not appear on any of the posters.
“It’s very tempting, sometimes, to blame anything that doesn’t work in your life on racism. But there are a lot of things that play into it. It’s not quite that simple,” he explained. “We can say it’s a racial thing, but I think if Eddie Murphy had played the role I played,...

Ghostbusters star Ernie Hudson is opening up about the beloved franchise, the female-led reboot and the inequitable treatment he received during the ’80s on the original films.
Hudson has appeared in five Ghostbusters films, starting with 1984’s original, the 1989 sequel, 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which hit theaters Friday. The actor also appeared in the female-led Ghostbusters reboot in 2016, albeit playing a different character.
His role as Winston Zeddemore was first offered to Eddie Murphy before Hudson came on board. Reportedly, the role was reduced significantly before filming began (Winston doesn’t even show up until about halfway through the film). The character also wasn’t featured on the theatrical poster. But Hudson says it’s more complicated than chalking it up to racism alone.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire wins the weekend with $45.2 million at the domestic box office. That pushes the franchise past the $1 billion mark. Dune: Part Two and Kung Fu Panda 4 battle for second and third place. Sydney Sweeney's new horror film, Immaculate, debuts at No. 4.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire easily wins the weekend, and the follow-up to Ghostbusters: Afterlife actually outperformed its predecessor… but just barely. According to The Numbers, Frozen Empire made an estimated $45.2 million over its opening weekend to take the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office. In 2021, Afterlife made $44 million by comparison en route to $204.3 million total for its theatrical run globally.
Director Gil Kenan’s Frozen Empire ended up making $61.6 million worldwide, but the Ghostbusters sequel didn’t get much help internationally. In fact, Frozen Empire only made about a third of what the film amassed domestically, with only $16.4 million overseas. And it’ll be interesting...

There wasn't any hesitation from Bill Murray to sign on for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
In years past, Bill Murray had famously avoided returning to the Ghostbusters franchise for many years, stalling potential plans to make a follow-up to Ghostbusters II. Murray later returned to play a new character in the 2016 reboot, and he reprised his role as Peter Venkman in 2021's Ghostbusters: Afterlife. In a new interview with Collider, Frozen Empire director Gil Kenan was asked if there were any challenges with getting Murray to sign on for the newest installment of the franchise, given his reputation as a "loose cannon." However, Kenan said Murray was enthusiastic from the start about getting involved with Frozen Empire, in part due to his friendship with the director.

In an interview with The Independent, original Ghostbuster Ernie Hudson said he was disappointed with the 2016 all-female reboot of the franchise.
While he allowed that the 2016 cast members — Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones — were all “brilliantly funny on their own,” he didn’t think the finished product resonated with fans.
“Fans were really invested in the story and the characters, and I think it was disappointing,” Hudson said. “I enjoyed the movie. But I think it wasn’t what fans were hoping for.”
Hudson had a brief cameo in the film as an unrelated character. But he said that his main issue with the film was rebooting an existing franchise.
“Look, I’m a fan of (2016 director) Paul Feig, so I have nothing negative about him to say,” he said. “Other than: I don’t quite understand why you do a reboot, you know what I mean?...

Franchise star Ernie Hudson remembers the disappointment he felt when the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot wasn't well received by fans.
Speaking about the film with The Independent, Ernie Hudson said the four stars of the film are all "brilliantly funny on their own," and he made it clear he's a fan of director Paul Feig. However, Hudson admitted that he would have preferred to just continue the original films' story, as would later happen with Afterlife, echoing one of the biggest complaints fans had about the reboot. Having said that, Hudson also said he personally "enjoyed" the movie, conceding that it just wasn't what most of the fans were wanting to see.

This story spoils the mid-credits scene for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire's mid-credits scene is more than just a fun moment --- it's directly teasing what may come next if the movie gets a sequel.
In the mid-credits scene of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Mini-Pufts can be seen stealing a delivery truck carrying Stay-Puft brand marshmallows. Speaking about the scene with Entertainment Weekly, director Gil Kenan confirmed that this scene is meant to directly tease the plot of a potential sequel. While a sequel hasn't been officially ordered at this time, Kenan also said he's spoken with co-writer Jason Reitman about story ideas, and he shared that the Frozen Empire mid-credits scene serves to set that up. Of course, that would suggest big things to come with Stay-Puft in the future of Ghostbusters.

Dan Aykroyd shines in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, playing a major role. His character moves the plot forward and is key to unraveling the mystery. Other original Ghostbusters, like Ernie Hudson and Bill Murray, don't have much to do. Their roles are limited and don't impact the plot significantly. Including old Ghostbusters in new films can be tricky. The balance between nostalgia and new characters needs to be carefully managed for future sequels.
Despite the fact that Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire includes three of the original four Ghostbusters from the iconic 1984 film, the new movie does not do much with its beloved characters, leaving one Ghostbuster shining bright while the others fall into the background. “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” ruled over the domestic box office and arrived on the higher end of expectations.
The latest installment in Sony’s supernatural comedy series has collected $45.2 million in its debut in 4,345 North American theaters. Earlier in the weekend, “Frozen Empire” looked like it would top out with $42 million but estimates were revised up after a bigger-than-expected Sunday. At the international box office, the film ignited to a tepid $16.4 million from 25 markets for a global start of $61 million.
Still, those domestic ticket sales are just barely ahead of its 2021 predecessor, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” which earned $44 million to start while the box office was deep in pandemic recovery mode. It’s a sign that the 30-year-old franchise hasn’t expanded its constituency beyond the original (and aging) core fans of the business of busting ghosts.
Plus, “Frozen Empire” carries a bigger budget than the last one, costing $100 million to produce and many millions more to market.

Sony’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire had no trouble winning a relatively quiet weekend at the box office: Stronger-than-expected Saturday turnout rescued the movie from opening behind the franchise’s last installment.
Sunday estimates show Frozen Empire launching with $45.2 million in North America thanks to multi-generational turnout and families. In 2021, the pandemic-challenged Ghostbusters: Afterlife debuted to $44 million. The new movie will need to have decent legs, considering it cost more to make — $100 million, versus $75 million for Afterlife. And there’s still concern that the film hasn’t broadened out to any notable degree in terms of new fans.
Overseas, the Sony tentpole started off with $16.4 million from 25 markets — it has a staggered rollout for competitive reasons — for a global start of $61.6 million. In like-for-like markets, Sony says it is pacing 15 percent ahead of Afterlife. The U.K. leads with $5.3 million, followed quickly by Mexico with $5.2 million.

In Hollywood, casting decisions can make or break a movie. Sometimes, the biggest roles almost end up in different hands, which changes the story. Take Ghostbusters, for example, the classic film with the guys chasing ghosts. Well, imagine if Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts were carrying those proton packs! Alongside them, crazy, right?

We all know the Ghostbusters crew, isn’t that so? However, they might have looked totally different. Back in ’84, Ivan Reitman dropped this flick about a ghost-catching scientist in New York City, and it blew up. Fans and critics couldn’t get enough of it. Then, in 1989, a sequel was released, but it did not quite hit the same high notes.
Attempts to make a third Ghostbusters film persevered for quite a while, yet hit a roadblock with Harold Ramis’ passing in 2014. Paul Feig’s 2016 reboot of the franchise featured an all-female team with nods to the originals.

Recent Ghostbusters films lack the comedic roots that made the original so beloved, leading to an identity crisis in the franchise. The legacy-sequel trend fails to fully capture the essence of Ghostbusters, with newer films alienating fans of the original comedy. New films, like Afterlife and Frozen Empire, focus more on action, neglecting the humor that made the 1984 classic enduring.

Say what you want about the newer Ghostbusters movies, but forty years after it was released, the original 1984 film is an all-time classic that is still part of our pop culture. When it came out, Ghostbusters was the biggest movie of the year, making $220 million in 1984. There were several reasons for the success, from the writing, the humor, the action, the practical effects, the direction of Ivan Reitman, and, of course, the chemistry between Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson. Nothing was cooler than the car, that bizarre-looking 1959 Cadillac ambulance painted white, the Ghostbusters logo plastered on the side, lit up with lights everywhere, and a siren so recognizable that to hear it today takes you back to another time. It was the perfect quirky car for a quirky movie, but it was almost completely different, from its color to the shocking things it could do.

The “Ghostbusters” franchise has had a tumultuous run in the 21st century. Paul Feig’s attempt to retool the series with an all-star cast of female comedians including Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones with 2016’s “Ghostbusters” was a fairly standard studio reboot, but online backlash about the gender-swapped casting launched a culture war fight that arguably exceeded the actual film in terms of influence.
The series was re-launched again when Jason Reitman directed 2019’s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” but the “Up in the Air” director quickly found himself in hot water when his comments about planning to “hand the movie back to the fans” were interpreted by many as a sexist dig at the female-led reboot.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review for “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” a sequel to the reboot of 2021, which was adapted from the 1984 classic and featuring OGs Bill Murray, Dan Akyroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson. In theaters since March 22nd.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
The new crew are relatives of Egon Spengler (the late Harold Ramis character), including daughter Callie (Carrie Coon) and her kids Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and science nerd Phoebe (Mckenna Grace), now in New York City with step dad Gary (Paul Rudd). They’re also living in the original firehouse headquarters, where they are busted by City Hall after a ghost chase destroys several blocks. They find out … through an ancient round orb sold to Og Buster Ray (Akyroyd) by Nadeem (Kumail Nanjiani) that the site of the firehouse is a portal to the ghost world. So through a ghost that Phoebe befriends named Melody (Emily Alyn Lind...

Certain beloved Ghostbusters characters were omitted from Frozen Empire due to an already overcrowded castlist for the new movie. Director Gil Kenan explained that there simply wasn't room or a narrative purpose to include Louis Tully and Dana Barrett this time around. Kenan hinted at potential sequels to continue the Ghostbusters saga, focusing on the character of Phoebe Spengler in future films.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has delivered a fan-pleasing addition to the spooky saga, but despite a hefty cast-list, there are two notable franchise absentees – Sigourney Weaver’s Dana Barrett and Rick Moranis’ Louis Tully. Director Gil Kenan recently revealed to The Hollywood Reporter why Moranis and Weaver do not appear in the new movie.

“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” kicked off with $16 million in North American ticket sales across Friday and preview screenings in 4,345 theaters. That nearly matches the $16.6 million that its predecessor “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” earned on its opening day in November 2021. Sony’s sci-fi comedy sequel will easily top domestic charts, though its work isn’t done yet considering its $100 million production budget.
That’s an uptick in the price tag from “Afterlife,” which cost $75 million before marketing and distribution. That franchise revival nearly tripled its $44 million domestic opening weekend, playing well through the Thanksgiving holiday to finish with $129 million and $204 million worldwide. Similarly, “Frozen Empire” could boost its fortunes with Easter at the end of the month.
Reviews have been leaning more lukewarm compared to the so-so received “Afterlife.” Early moviegoers are also a little cooler on the franchise now, with audience survey firm Cinema Score turning in a B+ grade. (“Afterlife” scored an A-.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire follows a negative box office trend for the franchise. The movie is projected to earn between $42-44 million in its opening weekend. This is roughly the same as 2021's Afterlife, which opened lower than the divisive 2016 Ghostbusters.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is continuing a negative franchise trend at the box office. The movie, which is the fifth theatrical installment in the franchise, is the second legacy sequel after 2021's Afterlife, which returned the surviving original characters to the fold after the 2016 reboot introduced an all-female ghostbuster team in a separate universe. In addition to featuring returning original stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts, the movie features Afterlife cast members including Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and Mckenna Grace alongside newcomers such as Patton Oswalt and Kumail Nanjiani.

You probably already know what will be number one on this list. The “Ghostbusters” franchise has gone through its ups and downs, reboots and legacyquels. But as the first film approaches its 40th anniversary this June, there’s little doubt in anybody’s mind that it remains the definitive ghost-catching movie of them all.
In the early ’80s, Dan Aykroyd — then just fresh off his stint as an original “Saturday Night Live” cast member — was inspired by his own belief in the supernatural to write a script about a group of eccentric academics who start a pest-control business where the “pests” they’re catching are malevolent spirits. Recruiting former “SNL” castmate Bill Murray to star, comedian Harold Ramis to help rewrite the screenplay, and “Meatballs” and “Stripes” filmmaker Ivan Reitman to direct. The final film, which hit theaters in 1984, starred Aykroyd, Murray, Ramis, and Ernie Hudson as the four Ghostbusters,...

“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” is in theaters now and it’s a lot of frosty fun.
The film, a direct follow-up to “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” and the fourth film in the mainline “Ghostbusters” continuity (which began back with 1984’s “Ghostbusters”), follows the Spangler family as they move into the iconic New York City firehouse that originally handled the Ghostbusters. There, they uncover an ancient evil that threatens to destroy Manhattan – and the entire world.
But are the Ghostbusters successful in thwarting this newest foe? Or will some of them sacrifice themselves for the good of mankind?
Before we break down the ending of “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” with some commentary from director and co-writer Gil Kenan, we must issue a sternly worded spoiler warning.
Where are the Ghostbusters at the end of “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire?”
Good question actually!
The original Ghostbusters, as well as the new Ghostbusters, have effectively been grounded. Walter Peck...

Don't count on seeing Ernie Hudson in the crowd when the new adaptation of The Crow hits theaters in June.
A new feature film based on the James O'Barr comic book, The Crow introduces Bill Skarsgård as a reimagined version of Eric Draven. It's the same character who was previously portrayed by Brandon Lee in the original film. Tragically, Lee was killed in an on-set accident during the production of The Crow, and the film was released posthumously. One of Lee's co-stars Ernie Hudson, who played a cop in the original film, has broken his silence on the controversial remake starring Skarsgård. While Hudson told ComicBook.com that he has great respect for Skarsgård as an actor, he admitted that he can't watch the film, or even its trailer, for the same reason he hasn't seen any of the previous sequels.

Halloween isn't for another few months, but this week's Empire Podcast delivers a hat-trick of horrors nonetheless, as Chris Hewitt has spooky sitdowns on Zoom with the stars of three scary fillums that are all out this week. First, Sydney Sweeney, star and producer of nun-more-black horror, Immaculate, talks about sticking the landing and possession. [21:24 - 37:37 approx] Then, David Dastmalchian, star of stylish found footage shocker, Late Night With The Devil, dials in from his trailer in Toronto, where he's currently working, to talk that movie, The Dark Knight, life goals, Ant-Man And The Wasp and more. [55:16 – 1:15:44 approx.] And finally, a man who ain't afraid of no ghost, it's original Ghostbuster, Ernie Hudson, aka Winston Zeddemore, who has a chat about Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire that was shorter than usual due to Chris having issues with hotel wifi from Dublin. [1:44:32 — 1:54:43 approx.]
