“Godzilla” may be 70 years old, but it’s showing no signs of slowing down.
At the 96th Academy Awards last month, “Godzilla Minus One” became the first “Godzilla” movie to ever win an Oscar. The 37th entry in the franchise, the Japanese “Minus One” took home the trophy for Best Visual Effects. In fact, it was the first “Godzilla” film ever nominated by the academy in any category.
Talk about being overdue. The question now becomes … can “Godzilla” strike again next year?
As you’re reading this, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” continues to destroy at the box office for Warner Bros. Its domestic receipts have passed $150 million. Worldwide, its grosses are well over $430 million and counting. The sequel to 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong,” its reviews have been somewhat mixed. Many critics have compared it negatively to last year’s acclaimed “Godzilla Minus One,” which scored an impressive 98% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Let It Be, a documentary about The Beatles not commercially released since it was broadcast over 50 years ago, will be available to watch on Disney+ in May.
Any time is a good time to be a fan of The Beatles, but the last year had been particularly fruitful when it comes to new Beatles material, most notably the long awaited release of Now And Then, which is now officially the final ever Beatles song, which was subsequently used by Matthew Vaughn in Argylle. Oh, and Sam Mendes is set to direct four Beatles biopics too.
Directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg and released in May 1970 amid the hysteria of The Beatles’ breakup, Let It Be has been unavailable for broadcast or public screenings for more than 50 years. The documentary will stand as a companion piece to Peter Jackson’s Get Out series.

Before Sam Mendes gets into production on his four separate yet connected Beatles biopics, another project featuring one of the greatest rock bands of all time is arriving with a fresh coat of paint. Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s 1970 film Let It Be, released around the time of the band’s breakup, was long unavailable for a half-century, and now thanks to Peter Jackson and team, it’s been restored for a release on Disney+ starting May 8.

Disney+ is adding to its library of music documentaries, bringing a long lost Beatles doc to its slate.
The streaming service is adding the 1970 film Let It Be to its platform, beginning May 8, 2024. It will be the first time that the film, directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, has been made available to watch in 50 years.
Peter Jackson’s Park Road Post Production restored the film, with Lindsay-Hogg’s support, allowing for its rerelease. Jackson, of course, directed the 2021 documentary for Disney+ The Beatles: Get Back.
Let It Be follows The Beatles as they record the aforementioned album, and as they perform for what would be their final time as a group.
Disney says that the background and story provided by Get Back allows for the film to be more fully appreciated, with Jackson and Lindsay-Hogg now voicing support for people to see both projects in a more complete context.

It must be the 1960s all over again because Beatlemania is running wild with no signs of stopping anytime soon. Fans of the legendary band have been enjoying something of a renaissance in recent years, between Peter Jackson's Disney+ docuseries "The Beatles: Get Back" in 2021, another Beatles-centric project that the director is reportedly working on, and, of course, the recent news that Sam Mendes will be giving the pop group the "Avengers" treatment with a series of four separate biopics in the near future. Now, it seems Jackson's efforts have directly led to yet another celebration of the Fab Four.

For decades, the attitude toward the documentary “Let It Be” in the Beatles’ camp seemed to be: Let it rest in peace. But the film is finally going to be seen again. A restored version of the 1970 movie is coming soon to Disney+, the same service that brought fans “The Beatles: Get Back,” the 2021 Peter Jackson docuseries that used outtakes from director Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s original film.
The documentary will re-premiere on Disney+ May 8, certain to be a red-letter day for Beatles fans who have spent most of their lives wondering if it would ever be let out of the vault again. Not only has the 1970 film been dusted off, but it’s been restored by Peter Jackson’s Park Road Post Production using the same technology employed to make the vintage footage in “The Beatles: Get Back” look and sound as revitalized as it did.

Aardman Academy Pacts With New Zealand’s Canterbury University for Stop-Motion Animation (Exclusive)
New Zealand’s University of Canterbury has signed a five-year exclusive agreement with the Aardman Academy, the training arm of the Aardman Animations, the British film and TV studio behind “Wallace and Gromit” and “Shaun the Sheep.”
The agreement enables the Christchurch-based university to become the only educational institution in New Zealand to specialize in Aardman’s unique version of stop-motion animation. It has the potential to upend the country’s animation industry.
The Aardman Academy was created at a time when the studio urgently needed more animators to produce “Chicken Run.” Released in 2000, the film went on to become the highest-grossing stop-motion film of all time. The Aardman Academy has since trained hundreds of world-class animators, directors, model makers and other specialists.
Training will be offered to animation students studying for the university’s Bachelor of Digital Screen with Honours degree. And it creates the opportunity to receive training...

When we talk about lost films, most people immediately think of silent movies, cinema on nitrate that either went up in flames or was in the hands of studios who didn't see the value in preserving it. Although we've come a long way in terms of film preservation since then, there are still plenty of films from the second half of the 20th century that may not be technically "lost," but are nearly impossible to track down and actually watch. They may have been put out on comparatively low-quality VHS back in the day, but not a peep since then -- these films never got a DVD or Blu-ray release, and aren't available on any of the streaming services.
If you're lucky, you might be able to find a grainy, unsanctioned VHS transfer on an unauthorized YouTube account, but even then, there's a lack of permanency, since they could be...

Writer/Director Kiah Roache-Turner wears his influences on his sleeves in the throwback creature feature Sting. A mysterious object from outer space crashes into a New York apartment amidst a raging blizzard, where the mysterious spider inside it is discovered by a girl named Charlotte. Charlotte dubs her new pet Sting, unaware that it’s not from Earth and comes with an insatiable appetite for human flesh. As the spider’s reign of terror increases, so does Roache-Turner’s commitment to capturing the mayhem through stunning practical creature effects, which makes this film worth the price of admission.
It’s not just the spider’s pet name, derived from The Hobbit, or the effects by the 5-time Academy Award® Winner Wētā Workshop, led by Creative Director Richard Taylor, that calls the work of Peter Jackson to mind here. It’s also the film’s sense of humor, from the opening...

A killer spider terrorises a New York apartment building in a tonally messy horror with some great creature effects. Our review of Sting:
Odd name for a killer spider movie, Sting. For that we can thank Tolkien-loving 12 year-old Charlotte (Alyla Browne) who chooses it as the nickname for the arachnid she finds scuttling around her dimly-lit New York apartment building. Sweeping the critter into a jar and intent on keeping it as a pet, Charlotte is blissfully unaware that Sting is capable of escaping from its glass prison and, as it dines on other living things roaming around the building, will soon grow to a frightening size.
Written and directed by Australian filmmaker Kiah Roache-Turner, Sting is an eclectic mash-up of styles and influences. Its snowbound apartment setting, every floor filled with eccentrics, immediately recalls Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro’s Delicatessen. Roache-Turner seems to relish in the little...

Dune: Part Two is a film directed by Denis Villeneuve based on the novel by Frank Herbert. It stars Timothée Chalamet and features performances by Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson and Javier Bardem.
Denis Villeneuve is back, dazzling us with this desert spectacle about a war between civilizations, where the visual elements again become the main lure.
Dune: Part Two is a three-part story narrated across several worlds and characters, leading young Atreides to accept the prophecy that transforms him into a messiah as a war rages in every corner of the known universe.
These films, with such eye-catching visual elements that they almost overshadow everything else, tend to sideline the story, over-burdens the characters, and stories often become secondary because what matters is what you see.
In Dune: Part Two, there is a lot to see, but also a lot to understand in this well-achieved adaptation of Herbert’s novels, which...

Update: Producer and Archivist Robert Harris has reached out to JoBlo to add his take on James Cameron’s 4K releases, saying, “These films have not been restored in any way, nor was restoration needed. There should be no problems with the original elements. The work performed was a re-visualization. An entirely new digital product, which (to varying degrees of success) appears to have achieved Mr. Cameron’s goals. If these were attempts at restoration, they would fail in all regards. All best, Robert Harris.”
Not long after reaching out to us, Harris sent a follow-up email with more comments:
Allow me to chime in again and possibly clarify. Very much akin to Titanic, these films seemingly were restricted during production based upon accessible technology – be it film stock, optics – whatever.

Borderlands Sees Cate Blanchett Channel Escape From New York: ‘It’s Her Favourite Movie’ – Exclusive
It’s not like Cate Blanchett has been averse to blockbuster fare entirely – after all, her career skyrocketed when she played the ethereal Elven queen Galadriel in Peter Jackson’s Lord Of The Rings trilogy, and she battled Indiana Jones in The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull. But generally, Blanchett is known for her deep-dive character work – like playing Lydia Tár in TÁR, or Jasmine in Blue Jasmine, or Carol in… well, Carol. Next up, though, she’s cutting loose and blasting into action in Eli Roth’s long-awaited adaptation of sci-fi action video game Borderlands (notably not playing a character called ‘Borderlands’).
As the central Lilith, Blanchett will engage in balletic and bombastic setpieces – a register which chimes with her personal film taste as much as those character dramas. “She loves Escape From New York,” Roth tells Empire. “It’s her favourite movie. But nobody would know that because...

The Lord Of The Rings trilogy films of the 2000s won fans’ hearts across the globe. While the story was already popular among readers of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy adventure books, the films introduced the epic Middle Earth saga to millions more.
They also made director Peter Jackson and lead actor Elijah Wood, household names. However, many are unaware that at a point, the trilogy’s visionary director had almost been cut out of the project. The Lord Of The Rings trilogy was almost doomed when Harvey Weinstein’s Miramax held its film rights.

James Cameron has hailed 'Dune: Part Two' as "pure cinema".The 'Titanic' filmmaker was very impressed by Denis Villeneuve's sequel - the highest-grossing film of 2024 so far - and he believes that the 'Sicario' director has been far more faithful to Frank Herbert's 1965 novel with his movies than David Lynch was in his "disappointing" 1984 picture.Speaking to the French publication Le Figaro, James said: "David Lynch's adaptation was disappointing. It was missing the power of Herbert's novel."Villeneuve's films are much more convincing. The characters are sketched out, they are very identifiable. It's pure cinema. I speak regularly to Denis, filmmaker to filmmaker. We record our conversations, like (Francois) Truffaut and (Alfred) Hitchcock."Cameron, 69, is the latest esteemed director to laud 'Dune: Part Two' after Steven Spielberg recently described the epic as one of the best sci-fi films he has ever seen.

Minutes into the medieval intro of “The Faceless Lady,” a fair maiden rips off her face. You immediately feel a bit nauseated. But did the violence trigger that reaction — or is it the fact that the action seems to be happening somewhere deep in your visual cortex?
“The Faceless Lady,” a collaboration between Meta and producer Eli Roth, is billed as “the first known scripted original VR live action, stereoscopic (3D) series ever produced of its size.” Although it’s designed for the Meta’s Quest headset, the story and scope seem wide enough to exist out of the headset. It’s a complete package that could bring fresh eyes to next-gen storytelling.
The six-episode undertaking, written by Jerome Velinsky and directed by John William Ross, is an escape room spin on ghostly lore. Three twentysomething couples head to the mysterious Kilolc Castle in Ireland to play deadly games for...

The glamorous (and handsomely paid) actors and actresses who bring our favorite films and TV shows to life often captivate us, but let us not forget that the real heroes are the artistic wizards behind the camera: the directors. They are in charge of choosing the ideal cast and setting the overall direction of the production, which includes what you see on screen.
Christopher Nolan, the genius behind Inception and Interstellar, and James Cameron, the maestro of Terminator to Titanic who maintained the excitement for Avatar 2 in 2022, more than ten years after the first film’s release, are two auteurs who established their careers through writing and directing in their own iconic styles.

It’s official: Taylor Swift is very, very rich.
The ‘Eras Tour’ singer-songwriter has joined the Forbes World’s Billionaires list, one of 14 celebrities who, according to the magazine, are worth a collective $31 billion. Also on the list: Dick Wolf, Rihanna, Tyler Perry, Peter Jackson and Oprah Winfrey, among others. Take a look below, along with Forbes’ descriptions..
George Lucas
Net Worth: $5.5 Billion | Age: 79 | Citizenship: U.S.
The Star Wars director, who debuted as a billionaire in 1997, is the richest celebrity thanks in large part to his production company LucasFilm, which he sold to Disney in 2012 for more than $4 billion in cash and stock. Steven Spielberg

This article contains spoilers for "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire."
After a stellar TV run with "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters," which finally gave us a good human story within the "Godzilla" mythos, and an unprecedented Oscar victory for "Godzilla Minus One," Godzilla has returned to the big screen with another team-up between Godzilla and King Kong.
Part of what makes "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" interesting and unique among the MonsterVerse movies is its team-up of villains, Shimo and Skar King. They essentially serve as reflections of Godzilla and Kong, the former being a lizard-like kaiju with an energy beam, and the latter being a giant ape.
Though Shimo is barely even a character, Skar King is a fantastic addition to the MonsterVerse — a violent and evil despot like Koba in "Planet of the Apes," with a badass kaiju spine he uses as a chain-weapon and as a way to control Shimo.

"Dune: Part Two" has officially become a commercial success, passing huge box office milestones and creeping towards the $600 million mark worldwide. Director Denis Villeneuve has thus proven wrong those who said Frank Herbert's celebrated "Dune" novel was "unfilmable," especially when you consider the critical response in conjunction with those box office numbers. "Dune: Part Two" might be a bleak blockbuster, but it's so far managed a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a similarly impressive 95% audience score.
It's safe to say, then, that Villeneuve's epic sci-fi sequel is not only a critical and commercial success but perhaps even a box office savior. Back in February, prior to the film's March debut, /Film's Ryan Scott noted that movie ticket sales were down 15% compared to the same point in 2023, and there's not a movie fan out there who isn't aware of the industry's post-pandemic struggles. One does not simply watch the first season of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" without coming away impressed by composer Bear McCreary's luscious and evocative score for the series. Reactions to the Amazon Prime Video show may have ranged from one extreme to the other upon release in late 2022, but hopefully, fans of all stripes could agree that the music of Middle-earth lived up to the sky-high standards set by the original trilogy of movies. While the series remains indebted to the visuals and locations used by director Peter Jackson, there's no doubt that the legendary and award-winning efforts of Howard Shore played just as crucial a role in defining the soundscape of a world inhabited by Hobbits, Dwarves, and all sorts of other fantastical beings. In turn, those contributions certainly influenced the various themes, motifs, and original songs McCreary sprinkled throughout the fantasy show.

John Rhys-Davies thought that 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy would be a disaster. The 79-year-old actor played the dwarf warrior Gimli in Peter Jackson's fantasy films but admits that he had serious doubts about the project because of the director's lack of experience on major blockbusters.John told the 'Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum' podcast: "I went with duplicity in my heart, to be honest with you, when I heard they were making 'Lord of the Rings'. I said, 'Oh yeah, good luck.'"And who's making it? Peter Jackson, he's done one or two wonderful small movies. But has he any idea of what he's really getting himself in for?"The 'Indiana Jones' actor continued: "I did hear they were doing it, and I...
